There are several varieties of romaine lettuce, some of them grows smaller and take less time to mature, some of them grow bigger with more time required to fully develop head. Thank You very much ☺🍀
Hello. Leaf lettuce varieties are more suitable for "cut and come again" harvest. You can still treat head lettuce like that, but it won't be able to form that crispy head that it's mainly being grown for. Thank You very much ☺🍀
So how did you end up with only one plant with all those seeds. I did what you did with my seeds and I have a bunch coming up rn. Did you pluck the others out?
Does the spruce shavings keep slugs away? Do you pull out the rooted part after harvest OR will the Romaine re-grow another head? Thank you for your video.
Hello. Well I would say it discourages slugs to move on them. As they need moisture to move and the shavings dry out pretty fast on the top. They don’t like dry and rough surfaces. Yes I pulled it out. It will grow some side shoots if You let big enough stem in the soil, but it won’t form another head like the first one. Thank You very much ☺️🍀
Hello. The best way is to check the soil. Stick Your finger 4-5cm (2") into the soil and You can tell whether it is still moist or needs watering. Thank You very much, I am so happy You like the video ☺🍀
Hello. Head lettuce varieties are grown for one harvest (mostly). If big enough part of the stem is left in the soil, it will grow some side shoots but it won’t grow another head like the first one. Thank You very much ☺️🍀
Hello. Well can be very tricky to say generally, so I'd rather recomment You to check the soil. But lettuce has quite shallow root system, so it is better to water it more frequently (every other day, maybe even daily in the stage of head forming)
They are likely to grow some side shoots if You let part of the stem big enough to do so in the soil, but it will take long time and these side shoots are very unlikely to grow the same head as the first one. Thank You very much 😊🍀
Enjoyed the video a lot of good information. But I didn't see anything in your comments or information to kind of step-by-step of what you used on top of the soil.I'd like a little bit more cause.I'm getting ready to plant some lettuce now.And i'm a new gardener

@@starlane3146it will grow some side shoots after harvesting the head. But it will take time and the side shoot is very unlikely to grow the same head as the first one.
Hello. After transplant roughly twice a week. Once they started to form heads it increased up to every other day (or even daily on clear sky days) few weeks before harvest.
Hello, I would like to ask because I am thinking of growing some of these on my backyard. Having said that, I'm from a tropical country. Temperature would be 30-38°C. Would it thrive?
Hello. No this one will definitely bolt. Is the temperature going to go down during winter months? There are some more heat-resistant lettuce varieties, but the temperature is too hot even for those.
My first year growing lettuce. Im unsure when to harvest. Thanks for this video. What did you do with the extra leaves you pulled off? Can those be eaten too?
Hello. What variety are You growing? If it's romaine lettuce, the harvest time is when the tip of the head is firm. I sorted those leaves (the bottom ones are of lower quality). Yes they are absolutely edible.
The soil was mostly compost (with some garden lime, wood ash or/and coffee grounds). I am trying to water the soil, but the rain doesn't care about that🙂 Thank You very much ☺
How many days from germination before transplanting? How long does it take to be bitter? My romaine lettuce is already 2 months old and only has a few leaves with the biggest leaves only about 3 inches long. I'm afraid they will be bitter before the harvest time. 😂
Hello. It depends on the growing conditions. The seedlings grow very slowly in cold weather. When they have 4-5 true leaves is about the right time to transplant them. What is the variety You are growing? They have bitter taste when grown in hot temperatures. Or when they bolt (which often happens in hot temperatures).
In that case You can cover the pot with plastic wrap (make some tiny holes into it) and You won’t have to water the seeds until they germinate. Make sure the seeds are covered with soil just lightly, or not at all. They need light to germinate 🌱🍀
No. All this work so You can see the process of it growing all the way from seed to harvest in a few minutes video (in the case You are interested). You can grow it on whatever scale You want, I grew dozens more in garden 🙂
What an obtuse comment. Do you not realize that it produces multiple heads of romaine? Also, it’s about self sufficiency and knowing how to garden. It’s ancient practice that has been utilized throughout most of humanity’s history. It really has been until recently that people are dumb and lazy

@@QueenBee333Q I believe the soil composition is mentioned in the video. No need to fertilize lettuce, if the soil is rich in organic matter.

Do the roots regrow, allowing for multiple harvests, or can they be harvested just once?”
The stems will grow some side shoots if You let big enough piece of them in the soil. But they won't form second head like the first one.

How often did you water your lettuce plants and do they like full sun or partial shade
Hello. After transplant roughly twice a week. Once they started to form heads it increased up to every other day (or even daily on clear sky days) few weeks before harvest.
They can be grown in full sun in cool weather, but when the temperatures rise they will appreciate some afternoon shade.
Thank u so much to both Answers
I just started my romaine, can you possibly give the % of the bone meal, garden lime, etc when you repotted? Thank you :)
Hello, it’s just a handful of each. The main and the most important part is the compost.
Are the outer leaves that were pulled off eatable or are the too bitter
They are 100% edible. I just sorted them, because the lowest ones tend to be of lower qualitty.
What are you putting on top of the dirt ?
Wood shavings 🙂
What did you do with the early leaves that you trimmed off? were those edible or did you just do that to tidy them up for harvest?
Hello. I sorted them out, most of them were perfectly edible, som the very bottom ones were of lower quality.
Do you water with a nutrient solution?
Hello. No, if the soil is rich in organic matter, lettuce doesn’t need any fertilizing. Actually it can cause head rot during head formation.
My first year growing lettuce. Im unsure when to harvest. Thanks for this video. What did you do with the extra leaves you pulled off? Can those be eaten too?
Hello. What variety are You growing? If it's romaine lettuce, the harvest time is when the tip of the head is firm.

After harvest will it regrow?

Mine is growing but flowering is it OK. Tks
It’s probably too hot for this plant. After flowering the leaves will taste bitter. I suggest You harvest it as soon as possible.
Ohk tks @@Liap
🙏💜. Thank You Life in a Pot
☺🍀
My romaine always bolts and doesn’t make a head. How do you prevent this? Partial sun?
It's most likely too hot for it. If it's over 25°C (77°F) it is very likely to bolt. Or not enough watering can also be the reason.
What zone are you in and when did you plant the seeds?
Hello. I am in zone 6 and I started these in late February.
Nice video, what type of soil do you use? Also do you water the leaves or water the soil directly?
The soil was mostly compost (with some garden lime, wood ash or/and coffee grounds).
I am trying to water the soil, but the rain doesn't care about that🙂
Thank You very much ☺
So in shot it takes 3months and half to harvest
question: where do romaine seeds come from in the plants life cycle?
Hello. If You don't harvest the heads, the plants will go to flower period. They will send flower stalks and if pollinated, those will produce seeds.
Are you goingbtobamsell or give away most of it
I gave some of these to my friends and colleagues ☺
