  • The defendant's sister, Sonya Henry, said that she believed her siblings were trying to care for their mother, but that they were in over their heads and could barely take care of themselves. Siblings Karen Murray, 49, and Michael Murray, 43, are charged with first-degree murder and aggravated neglect of a vulnerable adult in the death of their 68-year-old mother, Sheila Murray.

@courttv I think this is a crime that should be looked at in a totally different way. Instead of charging two people who tried to do what they father wanted them to do. I think there should be more programs for or elderly and families. Now this was a man who served his country and who was most likely the hierarchy of the family and when said he want his wife home, then the kids had to do just that. The dept of health and aging and adult services should of intervene. These kids knew nothing about taking care of their mother during her decline in her health. Instead of The state cutting the Home and Community based services, they should have individuals to go to homes with this type of cases.

I mean, that’s more common than you think. Because they were her caregiver And when somebody needs caregiving, like I understand because I am CNA It’s day and night every day every two hours So you almost have to move in with that person to make sure they get the level of care that they need. On the other hand, the neglect And I suspect in my opinion, abuse, physically, and mentally That this patient had to endure for probably years Is sickening. In addition to that, the sister that testifies up there, Says that she couldn’t afford healthcare or none of them could which is a Blanton lie Because the state steps in and helps That individual pay for the healthcare that they need. In addition to that, they also Will put that person in a nursing home If they cannot afford it, then state pay for that and Social Security and whatever money that you have left. So in my opinion They were probably getting paid by the state to take care of her And the level of laziness the Disregard for human Decency And the physical and mental abuse and neglect this patient had to endure her last days of her life is gross. I don’t feel bad for her. I don’t feel bad for the sister on the stand because if She really cared Her mother She would’ve came and visited and Most likely She never did.

It is obvious that their father had the power of Attorney and all her healthcare decision-making is, therefore his responsibility to provide her with the right care suitable for her condition by asking for the appropriate help from the aging community. It is cruel of him to subject his adult children who are not trained to handle such a difficult task even people who are trained for this kind of job some children do not want to see their parent's private bodies. If people, whether your family or not, chooses to live a certain way, who are you to change them?? She wanted different for herself, her children, & husband so she chose to move on and live her life...HER WAY! SHE IS GROWN! It was NOT her responsibility to "Save" her family!
Her siblings were grown as well, they weren't mentally strong enough to move out on their own and probably needed the guidance of their father! What I see is the situation was too much for them to handle with the mother and an elderly father who had health issues of his own. They were a family simply trying to survive on their own in their own home. Ive seen... as im sure we all know atleast 1 person or family of people who live extremely nasty. That one yard on the block thats atrocious, unmowed and trash everywhere in the yard, that one kid in school who smells extremely bad and clothes always dirty! Let's not all sit on our internet throwns and act as if this story is too far fetched to imagine. They didn't have money for health care as the majority of the population don't, father living on a small retirement check and probably their disability checks, and 2 mentally challenged grown adult children to take care of. As far as the mother's ailments, yes, she should've had home health care, at the least, to do home health visits to feed, clean & bathe her and to provide medication. They probably didn't know the state will fund that for a certain amount of hours a week or month to ensure she's getting some care. The father was either too honorable, like most older people are, to allow people into his home or he, himself was too embarrassed to allow someone in the home to see their living conditions. I've worked at a moving company before as a packer and have moved SEVERAL people, military & civilians, who lived in these conditions. It's more common than you think!
Do I believe it's murder, no! Was it neglect, yes. At some point, they should've atleast gotten a home health nurse. The father's insurance and/or Medicaid or Medicare pays for it.

I think there was a lot of dysfunction in this family from the start. The two on trial clearly have some kind of cognitive impairment, mom never worked and stayed home with them. Mom was also strict and had few friends. These two literally never left home. From the state that she describes the home and how it had always been that way, it almost sounds like a hoarder situation. The sister said she lives in Chattanooga. That's about 4 hours away, so not that easy with a husband and 3 children to have a hand in the daily care. The father refused their offer to move the mom in with them. I think she quit trying at a certain point to save a piece of her own sanity. Sad case all around and many answers will never know because the father has died and the two on trial seem to have lower mental capacity.

Don't let hospice get their gloms on her. I battled with my ignorant brother that my 87 yr old dad had the flu. Nope...put him in hospice and dead in 3 days. Now go back two months...the hospital, nurses, social worker all said dad was non ambulatory, he was unconcious etc. ( I lived an hour and a half away) I spoke with my dad the day before this report to me. I then immediately drove to see him. He was sitting on the edge of his bed. Legs swinging over the edge and he was watching the business of the staff nurses desk area. They had the gal to ask him "what is he staring at?" I walked in his room, told my dad...come on dad lets go for a little walk. He replied...."Oh good, they won't let me walk. They had it rigged so if he got up a buzzer would go off!!!!! I confronted the hospice social worker....she was HORRIBLE. My dad is hard of hearing, they did a cognitive question test on him WITHOUT his hearing aids. My meeting with that social worker was very confrontational (on my part) due to the neglect and lies they are saying ie: he couldn't walk, was unconcious etc. The reason he was in the hospital in the first place was because he got it in his thick skull that he didn't need to go to kidney dialysis on one of the scheduled days and then he got weak and couldn't go the next session. So he ended up hospitalized. He learned his lesson and said....bad move on my part. We had it arranged that staff would go in to assist with bathing etc. Two months later he had diahrea down his leg. He told them he couldn't go to dialysis because he wasn't feeling well. I told my brother to have the hospital treat him for flu (my daughter had it and so did a dear 82 yr old friend of mine) they had it the same time. They all reported explosive diahrea. No, it was easier for my brother to "trust" hospice social worker than to NOT stop dialysis and treat for the flu. Beware anyone who is in their 80's. If you get the flu they would rather euthanize you and morphine you to death. I have been very vocal about this and have encountered many former "hospice" nurses and they all have said...anyone who thinks that it is a "peaceful death" is lying. That there is nothing peaceful about it. Honey, I hope this helps you make some wise decisions for your mom. My dad was cooking for he and his wife and was mobile. His wife ended up in hospital with a broken hip and I didn't find out for two weeks that my dad has been on his own. I would have immediately went over there with a truck and brought his lift chair to my home and got him set up with dialysis in my area. If you get anything from this...IF your mom ends up in extended care somewhere...PLEASE don't just take THEIR word for what condition your mom is in. In this day and age...Trust NO ONE! God Bless.

It’s upsetting that the benefits of a former police officer could not cover the cost of Mrs. Murray’s healthcare. 😢 Many people are probably facing similar challenges. This is a humanitarian issue in our country.

I'm just not 'understanding'? 'WHY' are these two siblings being charged. Just by a glance? I would of NEVER left my mother in their hands/ care. They clearly are not capable of taking care of anyone/ anything. The only ones that needs to be charged are the ones that left the mother in their care. Are you kidding me? I wish I had the money. I would get the defendants the best lawyers and care. My heart goes out to the defendants. Their sister is FULL OF IT!!!!! The sister needs a mental evaluation ASAP! Just SAD

This is foolish, these two young adults have a very low intelligence! They can’t be blamed for murder , if anything the college educated daughter should be held more responsible, what a waste of time and money belonging to all the tax payers ,

So the most competent sister just left her two mentally challenged siblings and her father to attempt to take care of their mum, when our society would class such people as these two as needing care themselves. She could have done so much more but just wanted to get on with her own life and chose not to help, or not help sufficiently

Who says they are mentally challenged? If they were, there would be a plea agreement, not a trial.

He doesn't make any sense this daughter would've smelt the odour from months weeks possibly years and she didn't do anything she is lying you can see in her energy she didn't take care of her family knowing that they were simple and they were challenged people without any hygiene understanding caring for the mum she walked away because she couldn't handle it listen to what she says her mum was strict.

She could have visited every weekend and spent the day cleaning the house and at least bathed her mom. Her mother obviously bathed, fed, and cared for her when she was young and unable to do it for herself. It's the circle of life.

@@esk2g because it's just as much her natural right as the two with no education. She didn't stay out of the state, she could of used her knowledge and got long term medicaid for her mother. The two that tried didn't no any better than what they tried to do.

This is crazy. My mother died at 68, 3 children. One boy and two girls my mother was stubborn and always said she didn’t want to be a burden on us, but she also didn’t want to be in a nursing home or have home health aides come to the house..but we did whatever she asked and as much as we could to make her comfortable until she couldn’t hang on anymore.. I would give anything to have her back

She knew the conditions her mother was living in, but continued to leave her in the care of her sister & brother that were clearly not looking after her properly! She said it herself, that the house was dirty and smelled like urine! I just want to know, why she didn't call someone from adult protection services and get her some home help?🤔
