    I love this "facetime with Emily" series you have started! But personally - I like them longer. Getting cut off in the middle is like I lost connection on my phone and the call dropped. When I facetime with friends they are always long, I wish more people liked that.

    With it being FaceTime with Emily, you could totally just answer it with your face super close to the camera saying "hullo" like a regular facetime AND THEN jump right into the video. Low key the vibes are chill enough you could probably just dive right in.

    Hey Emily, the purpose of dripping faucets is to make sure there is water movement, this isn’t for every faucet but a kitchen sink that is on an outside wall, it is also smart to leave the cabinet doors open to help keep the pipes warm. And during freezes or winter storms, it is important to have running water. So keeping faucets dripping and cabinet doors open it ensures your water won’t freeze.

    • @oliviarodell9265
      @oliviarodell9265 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Exactly! The water moving through the pipes will be above freezing so it doesn’t allow water to sit and have the chance to dip below freezing and become ice. From the looks of your kitchen and the fact that you guys live in an upper floor apartment i would doubt that you would have anything to worry about.

    I lived just outside of Austin during the snow crisis two years ago. No power, no water, for SEVEN days. I very highly suggest trying to have a supply of water available. Even if it's just filling buckets, bathtubs, etc. You'll need it to flush the toilets. As for dripping the faucets, running water has a lower temperature it has to reach in order to freeze, so it makes it less likely to have a burst or frozen pipe.
    Be safe!

    Hi Emily! Dripping faucets does not really help keep pipes from freezing. What it does is allows the extra water to be pushed out as the water in the pipes freezes and expands. If it can't escape, it expands and stretches/bursts the pipes. Hope that helps!

    • @UnboundedArtandCrafts
      @UnboundedArtandCrafts 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

    Ok, I had to pause and comment! Yes!!!! I’m the same Emily, I have spent a ton of time in tears and worrying about the unhoused people in my area! We had an extreme cold front come through with awful temperatures ranging from -17 Celsius and below, with a windchill factor of -30 Celsius (I live near Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada) now, today, we had a huge dump of snow! It’s a tiny bit warmer, but still not very nice to be without shelter. we all do our very best to help but the un housed situation here is so terrible especially when the weather gets awful. And don’t get me started on their animals… it breaks my heart!

    • @fragilefleur
      @fragilefleur 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah I’m just east of Seattle and hate to think of the pets kept outside and the hearts broken surrendering the pets bc of the weather. The shelters are all very full also so it’s just sad. I agree with Emily to promote giving to local emergency shelters and promote allowing pets in some of them or making an emergency temporary pet shelter space next to a human shelter space. They do that for hurricanes sometimes so why can’t they do it for cold times? It usually requires pets be in a kennel and I’m not sure of the other stipulations but a big gym or school space could handle this while kids are out of school and the cafeterias would be a perfect place to provide food and eating space that’s more able to be cleaned properly. It’s an awful thing to consider people are outside and pets also so cold and uncared for when we have ample indoor spaces. Will it impact budgets? Yes. But it’s a reality. Maybe work on housing, mental health and support for people who have pets as service dogs and ESA’s. When it was super frozen cold here I was sad for all the humans, pets, and even wildlife. I was defrosting hummingbird feeders and putting out seed and suet for the birds and water bc all the water was frozen and changing them out and defrosting the feeders.
      We cannot be complacent. Do what you can do and learn how to protect yourself and anyone you can help out.

    To answer your plumbing questions: a steady trickle from your sinks keeps water moving and prevents it from freezing(running water can’t freeze) and the cabinets being open keeps the pipes from getting cold and possibly bursting

    Basically in terms of dripping faucets keeping the pipes from freezing think of it like how a lake might freeze when it gets cold enough but a river won't because it's moving. Even if it's really cold, it's harder to get something to freeze if it is in movement. Think like how you are warmer when moving when it is cold as opposed to standing still. Letting the faucets drip makes sure that the water in the pipes still stay in motion without staying in enough motion to greatly inflate your water bill. Also, if it gets cold enough that they do freeze, the sinks being on allows for the air in the pipes to escape if necessary. When water freezes it expands which causes pipes to burst so if they do freeze, it will expand up the pipe towards the faucet and not outwards which would break the pipes. I hope that makes sense.

    You can absolutely put food on your patio to use as a "refrigerator" if its cold enough, just make sure its not in the sun because then its warmer than the temp on the thermometer. but putting it outside overnight is totally fine!

  • @amandaneilly9587
    @amandaneilly9587 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

    The taps are because moving water takes a much lower temp to freeze and therefore if it’s not running the pipes will be full of water will freeze! Also if you don’t open your freezer stall during a power cut then your food will stay frozen for 24 to 48 hire before it even starts to thaw❤ currently in Scotland with 2 ft of snow 😂

  • @pingidjit
    @pingidjit 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    The dripping faucets help keep the pressure of the whole system down along with water moving. Cities water lines are under pressure so that water can flow at a good stream into houses. But when that pressure isn't able to be released and tempuratures start freezing, the pipes start bursting because not only does water expand as it freezes but the whole system is pressurized.

  • @jamisherman9235
    @jamisherman9235 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Letting the water drip so that the flowing water isn’t sitting still in place to freeze. Keeps the water moving, Moving water is less likely to freeze than motionless water. 😊😊😊 ❤❤❤ ILY!

    Hello from Oregon, we just went through a snow/wind/ice (still kind of icey to be honest) storm! Thankfully a couple years ago they finally broke down and got salt trucks (Oregon was infamous for not sanding roads for a long time). But ice is no joke, it's what we get scared about most here. Well that and the trees going down (it was pretty bad this time). Put a cooler out on your porch/balcony to put food in if your electricity goes out. If the water is moving in the pipe (dripping) it won't fully freeze.

Itll keep as long as the temps stay below 38. Just for future reference. Also- they make indoor safe propane heaters, get one & stock up on propane tanks. 🖤. And YES the tent thing works 10/10. I don't know for sure but I think its because of the movement of water that makes it so the pipes don't have water sitting in them and then freeze. And if the water does freeze, the open facet allows the pressure to be relieved once it melts. I do that all winter every winter in the NE just in case.

    When we know our power will go out we fill the bathtub with water for flushing toilets.
    As long as the fridge and freezer stay closed your food will be good for a few days. If you have a balcony and can afford it grab some camping supplies ... a propane stove or a rocket stove that you can cook and boil water on.
    Canadian here ... we know how to do winter outages!!
    The water dripping keeps the water moving through the pipes .... like a river it takes longer for flowing water to freeze as opposed to a still lake that will freeze.

    For Emily, you did what you needed to do for yourself and Elle and your own family. Learning about how you can further prepare for natural disaster, weather and be prepared is good. It’s kinda hard to delve into it and not go too far with anxiety so do a surface level prep and then let it go. When you are healthier you can advocate or donate to more folks. Your putting the word out regarding donating to shelters and possibly reconsidering the leadership of the area is key. The freak out is a ptsd thing. I have the same issue with things like this. Very triggery and uncomfy and stressful more than the average person. You need to make a solid plan, reassure yourself that you are okay and do your best to help where and if you can and then have to just step back and pray for the best. Sadly you can care so much it can harm you (I’m the same way). Not to say you should be complacent but you could volunteer at a shelter to help out, take a preparing for local issues course and things like first aid etc. This platform is the biggest venue you have for providing impact but if you can muster it, maybe you and Elle can do some volunteer gigs. Make sure they are safe for your mental health. If interactions will make you feel worse maybe you can work bagging up sandwiches or chopping veggies for dinner at a food place or something that’s not so emotionally difficult. It might help your mental health as well. I am saying this also knowing you are struggling to just do your day so no judgement if you aren’t up to it right now. You did good to get this video filmed, edited and out.
    And I didn’t even consider the time invested in color correction. Maybe pick some common spaces you are going to be filming and work ahead on lighting or knowing what settings/filters will prevent the color probs you are having. I think there’s a filter for normal indoor lighting that will tone down the glare and the yellow from yellow/warm indoor lightbulbs.
    Your camera may have it built in.

    To answer your frozen pipes question... If you have moving water going through your pipes, it's less likely to freeze. If your pipes do freeze, they will be less likely to burst because still water freezes and expands while moving water will relieve the pressure in the pipes. I hope that makes sense 🙃

    In my state, warming centers will allow pets to accompany their people, they just have to stay in their kennels/crates.
    This isn't meant to make people go "oh so they're good, I don't have to help"- please still try to help and find solutions so families can stay together. It took a lot of work to even get people to recognize that animals are family.

It doesn’t make sense to spend millions of dollars for salt trucks and things like that for it to be used 1 or 2 days maybe every other year. Hey! I'm in Oklahoma, we're unprepared, but not quite to the level of Texas. Hope yall are doing okay, I love your videos!!
    As for pipes..Imagine our pipes are like straws for water to travel through. When it gets really cold, the water inside the pipes can turn into ice. Now, if too much ice forms, it might block the straw (pipe) and make it burst, like when a balloon gets too full. Leaving the faucet dripping is like giving the ice a little space to escape, so our pipes don't burst.

    Every time you cook or bake, open your oven doors afterwards. Nothing wrong with a little extra free heat - stay warm you two! If you have connections with any farmers, reminder you can drop hay to any animal that does unfortunately need or used to sleeping outside! A lot of people are willing to donate straw during these arctic temps specifically for pets and livestock!

    “Put together” isn’t a requirement, and I don’t think it needs to be a goal if it’s making everything else harder. I shower every morning, but then put on sweats or pjs since I work from home. I’m comfortable, I’m happy, and someone seeing me dressed like this isn’t a problem. Also no makeup. Just exist, we love you any which way :)

    Purpose of dripping faucet is for it not to freeze. Whenever water is circulating it won't freeze.

    The reason letting the pipes have moving water in them because like a river, moving water doesn’t freeze.

    2022 winter storm was no joke. My husband from Pennsylvania had never experienced anything like it before either. Thankfully we didn’t lose power, just water. But at the same time we didn’t run our heat much that way it wouldn’t provoke more outages. It really was some hunger games typa shit 😅

    I live in Dripping Springs, just down the road from you and things finally started thawing today 🥳 we had all of our faucets dripping but only our bathtub maintained a trickle since Monday.. now our kitchen sink I think (?) has sprung a leak that we can’t find yet. Thankfully we never lost power though! Hopefully y’all’s water stayed on and y’all stayed warm!
    Also I’m pretty sure we drip our faucets because moving water is less liable to freeze than still water sitting dormant in a pipe. Think like how lakes freeze over because there’s not a constant flow of water to disrupt to surface where the ice would form.. typically the water in a lake is relatively still, therefore the surface doesn’t get disrupted and ice can form. Same with the pipes! I think lmao I’m not a scientist and I didn’t Google it either, I’m just assuming😆

    If you leave the water dripping the moving water prevents it from freezing and bursting the pipes.

    I never notice when people change lenses or cameras or angles. I notice that the youtubers i watch are very conscious of it though and sometimes apologize but i never notice any of that stuff. Maybe because I am focusing on who is taking and the backgrounds. I think i hone in to those and nothing else. For instance,as youve been talking,im casually looking around your kitchen at the countertops,oven,magnets, Reynolds wrap and then back to you and back n forth but as far as lighting and stuff i NEVER notice. I will watch you forever n ever unless you suddenly start doing Skims and Halara ads. Oh I'll probably even watch you then, I know youtubers make bank on those ads and i want you to have it so i take back that statement. Loves ya from Kansas City,we're in a deep freeze but i love it.

    This. Texas houses are designed to stay cool in the summer. You being around all 3 of these states also know. California isn't able to handle thunderstorms well, and Virginia buildings aren't designed to withstand earthquakes.
