      @@moxjade hey glad you asked! to this day flume has been my favorite, he has such an experimental take to the genre that his music is almost feels like it’s own subgenre. when i was in 6th grade i was really into the songs with huge drops, like with illenium, whethan, crankdat, that type of stuff. but 6 years later my taste has matured a lot obviously 💀 nowadays my main 3 are porter robinson, snails house, and like i said flume. i listened to porter and flume back then but i have a much different appreciation for their music now, especially with their new releases. what are your favorites though? and since it’s evolved into so many different types and subgenres, what types are you into?

    To me, future bass is like *pff wowowo pff wowowo pff wowowo pff wowowo* and melodic dubstep is like *bhuaaaauu bhuaaaauu bhuaaaauu bhuaaaauu*
    Totally agree btw, I'm not well versed with the jargon of music (though I'm learning) but I still found the differences between the two genres to be noticable.

    This video was a perfect explanation to help me narrow down what kind of artists to search for! When you explained the snares being on beat 3 THAT is what helped me realize what i like, which it seems both genres give that. I went to an illenium concert for the first time last year, never heard of his music prior to the concert and it was so unbelievably epic. It's as you said in the beginning, it felt like i finally found a sound i had been looking for my whole life. Been trying to discover other artists like Illenium but never knew his exact genre or other popular edm artists never hit quite as hard as he did. Im glad you included your song at the end that had a combo of the genres. My ears have concluded Illenium has elements of both types in his music, ive discovered I like the drops on melodic dubstep more.

    I look at where future bass has an energetic but gentle pace to it, whereas melodic dubstep reaches a crescendo both energy and emotional. Example of this I think would be Chimes Starstorm.

    I'm extremely late to the video, and you got me in the first half lol but damn great vid! One thing tho, Melodic Bass is a genre recognized nowadays and has been for a few years so the last case study is a blend of both future bass and melodic dubstep making it an obvious Melodic Bass track. Think of it as Melodic Dubstep song with Trappy Drums, there's ofcourse some other factors that make some sound design aspects more diverse but with enough practice of listening you can tell, best old examples I can give are Illenium - Fractures and Illenium - Take You Down

    I’m part of a third category who clicked on this having misread the title as being about future funk (also a bass music genre) rather than future bass. Future funk is what GRiZ (perhaps my absolute favorite producer, since back in his Mad Liberation/Rebel Era days- easily up there at any rate) calls his twist on electro-funk/electro-soul… Which you may appreciate as well. It covers a pretty broad spectrum of sounds, even just within GRiZ’s own work. He samples everything from classic hip-hop to funk, RnB, jazz, & soul records. Some tracks are extremely glitchy & experimental, whereas many of them are extremely melodic & consonant, from the smooth, almost bluesy Summer sounds of Hard Times & Feel the Love to bass-heavy bangers where he manages to push the bass just about as far as it could possibly go without breaking up into overdriven noise (songs like Where’s The Love, built off Marvin Gaye & Jay-Z samples, & Rock n Roll have some of the most insane bass I’ve ever heard)… And then there are songs that easily cross that threshold & just go absolutely HAM, like Griztronics parts 1 & 2, Better Than I’ve Ever Been… And incredibly unique, genre-denying, you might say progressive electronic tracks like Too Young For Tragedy parts 1 & 2 that feel like a complete journey in themselves.
    I highly recommend checking that stuff out; I find his combination of very complex, nuanced electronic elements & organic sounds like vocals, live instruments (he plays sax & his friend plays guitar at their shows & on studio tracks), & instrumental/vocal samples) really gives his stuff a soulful, human touch that I find lacking in some more monotonous electronic subgenres. And same with some other electro-funk/electro-soul & genre-defying/genre-blending electronic artists. Cheshire, for example, in electro-funk, or Tipper on his more recent stuff (Marble-Hunting blends hip-hop & very psychedelic almost dubsteppy electronic sounds in a way I consider very masterful). But to each their own! The “sparkliness” of the synths in the stuff you’re talking about here is a bit too much for me, & maybe some of the morphing bass sounds or glitchy aspects of some of their stuff would be too much for you, but it’s all personal preference. Although I think GRiZ is a virtuosic enough producer that, whether it’s your favorite style of music or not, there’s objectively a LOT that can be learned from people like him & their work. As I’m sure there is from the very best future bass/melodic dubstep producers as well. Anyway, enjoy if you look into them!

    Wow man I got sent this video and was honestly not expecting anything, but this was easily one of the funniest and yet informative videos I've seen recently. Absolutely nailed it, the explanation and the song, thanks for the video!!
    Btw, a quick thought I had while watching, more and more people say melodic bass now, for me it's just a more "wide public friendly" way of saying melodic dubstep while making it more vague (and probably encompassing), would you say it differs a lot from what you've said or do you also tie it to meldub as well?

    • @moxjade
      @moxjade  ปีที่แล้ว

      So I would say “melodic bass” is a catch-all umbrella term for future bass and melodic dubstep. Since the genres have many similarities and often get grouped together, melodic bass is an efficient way of talking about these genres of music! Thanks for the love on this video, my friend!!
