    i can't believe i am posting my first video of the year in February T^T
    this is a video I've wanted to make for AGES and it was so daunting to start editing because i wanted it to be perfect! perfectionism + creative block + seasonal depression...let's just say that it was the perfect recipe for an unexpected hiatus.     As someone whose also trying to adult a little tip for the fridge: don't let social media fool you! Organize your fridge how YOU see it! For example, I ALWAYS need to keep track of my fresh produce, SO I put condiments, etc. in those "produce" boxes in the bottom and put my produce in the sides/bottom shelves of my fridge. Helps keep everything within "eye-sight!" Thus less food waste (hopefully---that's the goal)

      I like to do that too! Those drawers are meant to keep produce fresh though (they have humidity controls) so I will put things that could bad quickly in there and then I have a dry-erase board on my fridge where I write what perishables I have and when I put them in the fridge :)

      I agree! I organize my fridge by “meal” and “ingredients” - meal prep goes all the way at the bottom/in the back bc I know I’ll remember it and look for it. Ingredients that get grouped by meals can go together too (like bread, eggs, and cheese, or yogurt, granola, and nuts), produce in the middle/top so I don’t forget about them, and condiments go in the produce drawer hidden away. Change it up as needed…. just a note that this really only works when you live alone LOL I’m sure a roommate would go mad at my organization

      there are some food safety things to consider here though! like not storing raw meat in the top section as it can contaminate the other food if it leaks and drips down

    Important saving Tip: DON'T BUY VEGETABLES AND FRUITS AT SUPERMARKETS!!!! Instead go to shops with certain quisine like asinan, mexican or polish. Groceries are WAY cheaper and better quality. Also locate nearest markets and go there also for cheaper products. Also theres a lot of apps and online groups of people who give away food so it doesn't go to waste. I use too good to go, but i dont know if it works in USA

    Hello! Ingredients I recommend (of course, you can take out those you are sure you dislike) to make almost anything:
    - onions (cheap, useful for literally everything)
    - garlic (easier to have a garlic paste: lasts longer, you only use a tiny bit, and it gives tons of flavour)
    - tomatoes (can be used for sauces, cooked for hot meals like pasta, raw for salads)
    - carrots (can be eaten cooked or raw, usually cheap, last long
    - RICE!! (LASTS SO LONG, will save your life, always have rice, also not expensive and it's nutritious)
    - SPICES (salt, pepper, lemon (idk, I'm putting it here), paprika, cumin, ginger, etc)
    - corn starch!! (if you mix a bit with cold water and a sauce you like, and add it to whatever you are cooking, let's say hot vegetables, you will have a LOT of sauce! Corn starch + water thickens what you are cooking!)
    - Pasta (fast, simple, cheap)
    - any fruit that you like, for example, I love oranges and apples, they are not expensive and are very nutritious.
    - Maggi Cubes or chicken stock/broth (you can make a soup easy and quick with it)
    - TEA TEA TEA (cheap, good for you, easy asf to make)
    When you grocery shop you need to make sure you are getting the following things:
    - Vegetables
    - Fruits
    - Carbohydrates (ex: rice or pasta)
    - PROTEIN (make sure it has what you need. If you are vegetarian, for example, you might want to add spinach to your diet because the lack of iron from not eating meat might affect you)
    - something that makes you happy and that isn't too big of a cost (snacks, for example)

      Added recommendation: canned tomatoes may be cheaper where you live, and then you don't have to fight to finish them before they spoil. Also, cheese if you can eat it! Especially something like a block or bag of shredder cheddar will last a long time and you can use it as a sauce base (same way you use tomato as a sauce base). It can be nice to alternate tomato flavor, cheese flavor, and soy sauce flavor. Also potatoes for similar reasons to carrots.

      @@nr1896 Store brand usually has no sodium added! I'm a salt lover and you can also just not add salt when cooking if the canned tomatoes do have salt added, but if you have a few minutes I highly recommend checking the ingredients of the cheap brands. I do buy diced tomatoes and crushed tomatoes so it's literally just tomatoes if you buy the organic store brand, or tomatoes and a common preservative if you buy the regular store brand one (no salt) which is what I do.

      top tip, if you don't have any corn starch, you can use plain flour mixed with a little cold water. it's not quite as good but it does work to thicken sauces :)

      also one thing I like to do as a student with ADHD is buy a pack of meat (chicken, pork, etc) and make a marinade for it and marinade the entire pack as soon as I get home from the store (keep track of the expiry date tho). That way, when it's time to eat I can simply cook the meat and not have to worry about how I'm going to season it or make a sauce for it to make a full meal. Veggies and rice can also be stir fried in some of the marinade.

    this video was honestly so comforting, as someone who has been struggling with their relationship with food for most of my life and especially in college now, hearing you talk so passionately about how much food can provide us made me feel so good because I used to feel so guilty for literally eating and would see it as a punishment. i watch your videos whenever I eat because they calm me down! Id love to see more chef deborah videos!! also my tip is to buy some frozen produce like broccoli or frozen blueberries if you have trouble finishing fresh produce before it goes bad because it's cheaper and that way I dont waste it and alot of times you can buy a giant bag!

    From a biology major: Every seedcarrying body for angiosperms are fruits:)) With generally four categories: nuts, berries, capsules, stonefruits. Tomatoes are actually berries, since they're fleshy fruits with multiple seeds:) Those are botanical terms.. wherein there is no such thing as a vegetable:) if you're talking gastronomic terms.. So no harm at all in calling a tomato a veggie.. It doesnt matter technically, heheee :))

    When I first started cooking in college I was a mess! I'd either only eat two types of meals or try out recipes I didn't like just because college blogs recommended it. Starting to cook is scary and there isn't a good guide for newbies getting started, but your video would have been SO helpful to me a year ago! Although I'm still a bad cook, I've been able to try new things and discover new recipes and it's honestly been so fun! Love the video, and can't wait to try a few of your recipes!!

    from one baby adult to another, here's a couple more tips!
    - meal prep is your best best friend. there are some meals i cook in a big batch and just eat the same dinner three days in a row. this works better for some things than others, for example curry and salads are good. make sure it's something u really like tho, obv!
    - regularity is v helpful. while I like testing out new dinner recipes, for breakfast i always have overnight oats w fruit, and lunch is nearly always cheese and tomato toast, maybe with some greens or nuts. that way, I know I always need a supply of ingredients for those two meals, so less thinking required. plus, not cooking lunch and breakfast saves a lot of time (and I meal prep the oats)
    - ik she mentioned it, but the FREEZER. loml. you can freeze nearly anything. put vegetables and fruit in there and they'll come out tasting largely the same. spinach. chopped onion. banana. you name it. especially good to put fruit in there and then blend into a smoothie
    - this might not be something for other ppl, but whenever I make a recipe off social media, i always physically write out the ingredients and directions on a piece of paper. often influencer foods add unnecessary stuff or things I dont like, so by writing it down although it take a bit longer it saves time in the long run because I dont have to keep rewatching the video. also I normally add a couple notes to it when I'm done cooking like "leave in oven for longer" or "use less chilli powder it's too spicy" so I know what to do next time.
    - if you have time and money (ik most college student dont but) having cute plates and utensils and making your meal look pretty can be really motivating! I send pics to my bf all the time and him being impressed makes me want to cook more, so make sure to share your achievements too!
    - if you live close enough to the store, go a couple times a week instead of doing one big shop. it will help you prevent food waste, let you plan better, and feels less overwhelming
    - on that topic, this may sound obvious but stores differ a lot. for example in the uk, a bell pepper from lidl is not going to last as long as one from tesco. shop around to find what suits you and your budget

    Ive been recovering from an eating disorder for about 6 years now, ans im still no where near being healthy, but i am trying. Recently ive been spending a lot of time trying to learn how to cook and take better care of myself, and its hard, but seeing video's like this give me hope. Hopefully one day ill be able to make delicious and healthy meals too, but until then ill keep learning and trying new things everyday ❤

      I’m also in recovery, and man is she right about just feeding yourself being the goal. It’s awesome if we can also have nutritional and delicious meals, but we need to fuel our bodies, and food is food man.     I have a tip for someone who lives part time with my bf (who only cooks big fancy meals when I'm there). Your freezer is your best friend. If you don't eat sandwiches every day, freeze your bread. I don't drink milk but I'll cook with it sometimes so I put it in the freezer when I'm not gonna use the rest for a while. Bought a large bag of carrots for cheap and don't want them to go to waste?? Freeze it. Don't forget, freezer burn is a thing so I recommend freezer paper (butcher paper). Just wrap it up good, tape it and label it so you don't forget what's what. This is all especially helpful when you're on a budget or hate food waster like me. You can freeze just about anything.

      do you thaw out the milk each time or separate it before freezing somehow? I only freeze meat, and I always portion it out before I freeze it (I buy pork butt a lot). But I don’t really use the freezer that much besides that and foods that are already frozen.

      @@pheonixrises11 Freezer bags work best because it's easier to thaw that way than a huge jug. (Place in fridge to thaw so it wont spoil at room temperature). And yes, it's easier to measure it out that way too. I make sure they're freezer bags to prevent freezer burn. I usually just buy like little cartons, less than half a gallon, so I usually don't separate it out very often. I just use the half cup I need and throw it in there for next time. You can freeze whole jugs but leave like 2 inches on top for expansion.

    I love all the positive food content lately coming from creators like you that focus on our health and well-being whilst also being realistic. I struggled with food in the past I felt bad not being able to eat the healthiest options because I had little money back then but seeing these videos helped me achieve my health goals realistically and be more gentle with myself and my relationship with health and food

    Also with groceries, the internet is your friend!
    I always look up things like "can I freeze this", "does that have to be in the fridge" etc.
    One more thing i realised is that some things like pickels or tomatoes in oil last basically forever in the fridge
    So you can buy it once and have it for a while and dont have to throw away food

      Ok but her tips still apply? Also she's not like millionaire rich. I could easily afford these meals and I'm a college student without a job lol. I live off grants and loans and this would fit into my quite small cooking budget.
      Let's not dismiss people for having money the second we see them. She really didn't buy anything that screams ultra rich. She bought tomatoes, bread, some other veggies, tuna, kimchi, etc. None of these are expensive whatsoever and if you think they are it just shows you don't cook/buy real food much.

    another amazing tip ive discovered recently is to look up the menu of one of those fancy healthy restaurants, and pick your favorites to make at home. it’s cheaper!

      @@elliotRust29 saw this and remembered how my mum would sneak veggies into foods, she would grate / cut up carrots and zucchinis and things and put them in like chocolate muffins for example !!! i could never tell and because they were so fine and mixed with the muffin i took no notice to it, i saw it obviously but texture and taste wise i couldnt tell, you can do the same thing in soups for example, blending veggies together and include ones you usually arent a fan of or veggies that dont have a taste that way the flavours of everything else you add can mask it !! i hope this helps :3

    I really enjoyed this video! As a public health major, I find satisfaction in content that can encourage people to make smarter purchases when it comes to grocery shopping.     I'm a recent graduate soon to turn 24 and I often feel very hopeless about my situation and life in general as I'm often struck with this feeling of failing my twenties, or falling behind in life, and I can sometimes get very in my own head about it all. I find your videos incredibly comforting to watch because they're peaceful, cozy, but also remind me that most people my age including those I look up to are in a similar boat. Thank you for reminding me that we are all still learning how to adult :)

    i always plan my grocery list by what i'm making for the coming week, including my meal prep! it makes my grocery trip so much easier. if its in the budget i'll also buy a little more meat than I need and keep it in the freezer for future use.

    Something that also helps reducing the planning efforts for meal prep is to keep lists of recipes you like and have certain days assigned to certain meals. You could for example have a rice day, a pasta/noodle day, a potato day, a vegan day, a sweet day, a fish day, a soup day etc.
    If you keep lists for each day, it'll be less overwhelming to decide what you want to eat. You can also easily keep variety throughout the week, plan ahead easier, and even if you don't feel like eating this specific thing that day, you will have everything already bought to switch around the days if you like to.

    Little tip for the hachiya persimmons, they are a LOT different than fuyu persimmons. With Hachiya, you have to wait until they are basically turned to jello inside to eat them, or else they are insanely bitter and dry your mouth. Fuyu, on the other hand, you can eat when they are still rock hard. My favorite fruit are hachiya persimmons, but the first time I tried one before it was ripe I hated it.

    As someone who grew up at a grocery store (family owned), remember to always check the dates on your food! The freshest food is in the back of the row because they want to sell produce before it expires. Dairy can sometimes expire on the shelf because there’s no visible signs of going expired so sometimes workers miss it. And always ALWAYS wash your produce because they’ve been A in the ground covered in dirt and mulch and B touched by at least 20 people on the way to the store and just by having it picked up and put down

    idk if anyone already mentioned but the hachiya persimmon needs to be SUPER ripened before eating (almost overripe)! It should be really really soft and squishy, too soft to cut (usually eat it by splitting open the skin and spooning out). If you eat it too early it’llbe bitter and it can make your mouth super dry/numb :’) but when done right it’s one of the best things ever

    This is great. Most, if not all of these things were already known to me, but it's great to see someone actually *saying* them out loud, because I feel like so many people can learn from this, and there is no judgement. It's so true that sometimes, I just wanna eat something quickly, and I always have something ready in the freezer, and that's not something to be ashamed of.

    As a highschool student I love this vid. I’ve been so nervous trying to figure out what my day to day is generally going to look like in college, and most of the college vlog vids don’t cover practical stuff like this, but now I at least feel a little better about grocery shopping! That’s a step in the right direction.

    i love using carrots, apples, cucumbers, and/or zucchini (not necessarily together) as base veggies/fruits. they taste good in sweet and savoury meals + i just feel most creative and the least restricted when i use them :)
    I am not really a great cook and a baby adult myself. this is what is currently helping me stay motivated.
    ps: this video inspired me to get apple slices with honey and cinnamon as a snack

    I don't know why, but learning that I can just plan a few meals and make them whenever instead of trying to plan meals for specific days of the week was a game changer. Meal planning was always sort of overwhelming because I wasn't always sure if I was going to be able to make something on a certain day, but learning I can just plan the meal and make it whenever I need to/have the time felt like the enlightenment to me. Meal planning isn't so intimidating anymore because I know it's flexible.

    after being in uni for two years now, it is so important to have meals throughout the day! i use to skip breakfast, but now im making sure i eat at least something in the morning because it can really help you get through the day :)

    there's been some rich uni student discourse on twitter where i live talking about whether eating at places like mcdonald's is cheaper than going to local eateries/canteens. obviously, it's the latter, but most of the food offered there is almost the same, if not the same, as fast food restaurants (minus one vegetable dish or two) but priced a bit less. but, not once have they thought it's more affordable to cook your own meals, not to mention it's healthier and there's less risk of getting food poisoning (if you know how to pick fresh ingredients).
    i know a lot of wealthy uni students where i live who still believe buying from fast food restaurants is cheaper than cooking your own food (it's not 😭) who really need to see this video. thank you so much for creating this guide.

    Hey little tip about that type of persimmon, you have to let it fully ripen for it to be edible. It all has to get soft bc if not ur gonna get cotton mouth (but with actual fibers in ur mouth). The other type of persimmon (the short round one) you don’t have to fully ripen it before eating it

    I think something really important to include in this video. Is that more often than not we as consumers see influencers who are able to grocery shop every week or every other week and that may not be your reality. And I would guesstimate that a lot of people are not shopping at Trader Joe’s or Whole Foods or sprouts, etc., which is why it made me so happy to see that you gave a shout out to Safeway and QFC. I will say as someone in her 30s now who gets paid biweekly, this is important to understand that it doesn’t matter where you shop. As long as you are affording it and doing it within your means, my rule of thumb is one big bulk shop per month for things, like cereal, any dry goods and then I do Produce more on a weekly basis so that I don’t feel like I’m blowing budget.
    Food chain is one of the biggest things hitting the younger population right now and I think it’s so important. We recognize that being fed no matter where you shop, is the most important thing. Thanks for the video Deb.

Im moving out this year and one of the more intimidating things I'll need to face is feeding myself- I've been really lucky to have parents with the time, dicipline and energy to cook for me all my life and now that I'm moving in with some of my best friends, I wanna be able to give them the same comfort. This makes me feel like it's very achievable.

    I just discovered your channel and recently I’ve been slipping back into my anorexic behaviors and I just haven’t had the energy to shop or eat, I quit a job because of a very creepy and predatory boss and your tips have been super helpful. I’m able to pick out food I know I’ll eat while still having money to do stuff with my friends. Life is so hard, but seeing other people thrive inspires me to eat healthy, fuel my body and my soul.     ok the rice in the freezer is a game changer!! i was already freezing my bread (my mama taught me well) but i never thought to do rice too! i always make a big pot of rice and stick it in the fridge, but i do worry sometimes about it going off after a week or two - i'll have to try this in the future!

    Best advice is also to learn how to coupon and get the cards from some of these shops. My school is next to a CVS and I get so many deals that help me pay less. Like I can always find some $4 off next purchase deals.

    Living in Korea has made this so simple because of the 3/8 market where fresh produce is available for cheap! Just buy, wash and store! Will be taking a list of meals into the next cycle for sure!

    I know this video is a few months old but I had a note about the hachiya persimmon! Unlike fuyu(rounder and flatter, looks more like a tomato), hachiya can only be eaten once it’s red and fully ripened. I like just using a spoon and eating it straight from the skin! I made the same mistake as you before and I remember how dry it made my mouth feel :’)

    ps. the persimmon you got is very very unripe, theres two types of persimmons, either the soft (more peach shaped) or the hard kind (more like a flat pumpkin), you bought the soft one- meaning when it's ripe, it becomes super sweet, if u eat it while its not ripe, it taste super gross and makes your mouth dry

      it'll definitely take a bit of planning but yes! i recommend going to a budget grocery store if you have one near you, and prioritizing cheaper staples (eggs, pasta, beans). buy in bulk if you can as well!

    A quick protein that can stretch across a handful of meals are the already cooked rotisserie chickens. There are videos that show you how to break down the bird. White meat like the breast are best served in cold meals like sandwiches and wraps while the dark meat like the thigh is good in hot meals like soups or tacos. Plus the bones can be boiled to make chicken stock
    Canned fruit and vegetables are also a quick and cheap produce source (and you don’t have to worry about forgetting about it in the fridge and going bad). A tip tho is to try to find the reduced sodium form of the canned vegetables and the fruit canned in juice rather than syrup if you’re watching salt and sugar levels.

    With that variety of persimmon, it is actually best enjoyed when it is extremely overriped to the point of having little brown spots and becoming very mushy! I'd recommend giving it another try and letting it ripen.
