    Your sound and delay on “Set the Controls....” absolutely jaw dropping. His sound on Pompeii is so damn amazing. Binson makes it sound so loose and it’s like he can’t play a bad note with it. I really hope T-Rex gets it right and we get something cool and reliable.

    • @gilmourishofficial
      @gilmourishofficial  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks! The Binson had a unique tone and the Boonar does a great job replicating it. The Binson had a fixed time - 310ms on the single head - and it really makes everything sound huge and almost a mix between echo and reverb.

    Hello sounds great I have some mxr 1000 ms delays now id almost have to match them by ear and kick the repeats up but they are digital units. The 1500 delay has a different modulation sound too it. Makes me want to tape round the time and mark it with correct times and know exactly where each delay setting is.. I know it will do all those mentioned but wont sound like echo rec exactly also other knobs will need to be marked as well.. notated.
    Old gear still has its merits.. Makes me want to dial these inside axe fx 2 now though see if
    you can dial them in should be able too.. Some efx just have a specific sound nothing else does.. The modulation sound on those mxrs are interesting. nothing else really sounded like that though dated now that is THAT sound for then.. Almost needs a paint pen in fine line
    to be able to pen the time rates in round the dial... as they are not listed on mxr you gotta figure them out against one with digital read out to know what the actual time is then mark it.
    vs just punch in 310 or 380 or 440 700 ect and 7 repeats ... But I do know the modulation sound on the 1500 is richer then the 1000ms its just different perhaps an upgrade there as well the time of 500 more seconds of delay was the big deal then. I spied Ej using both of those. stocked up on the 1000ms units.. those had hold feature soulful terrain is the hold feature and if you had two of them you set one to that hold feature time and its mix was hotter then the other mxr unit which was another delay time but when you turned the hold feature off entirely all you hear would be the other delay as its out of chain.. just an intro or segway or ending feature.. those had bypass and then hold....

    This is a great video - I've never seen this much detail on this aspect of Gilmour's sound! I happened across your video, since I recently posted on my channel two Floyd covers (Brain Damage/Eclipse and Comfortably Numb), on both of which I used a Maestro Echoplex tape delay, and threw in some slide guitar to emulate that early Floyd style echo, including the violin effect. Have you ever known Gilmour to use a tape delay? Thanks for posting!

    • @gilmourishofficial
      @gilmourishofficial  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks! He did use the old Binson for years and although the sound is similar to tape, it's designed based on a steel drum. I've never seen him use tape machines although I'm sure they had some Copycats and Space Echos lying around.

    I got a question.
    How many miliseconds can the MXR digital delay system 1 go to?
    Because I need a digital rack mount delay. Just as long as it can go over 440 milliseconds.
    I saw one on reverb for about $300 Australian.
    If you don't know. That's fine.

    • @ripplebear
      @ripplebear 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would imagine it goes over 440ms, but you might want to send the seller a message. Most sellers on there are pretty good about letting you know, or at least pointing you in the right direction. Might also want to look into something like the strymon timeline. You could essentially run it as a rack unit and have it out of the way, while also having MIDI control, tap tempo (can add external tap pedal, or expression) presets, MS/BPM readouts on LCD, stereo ins and outs, and much more. It's a bit more expensive than a 300 even used, but will last a lifetime and is extremely versatile! It has so many algorithms with deep editing, or you can keep it pretty basic too. I'm assuming you're not new to gear, I figured I would throw that out there anyway! I don't work for strymon by the way, I just can't say a single bad thing about it! Cheaper alternative in the same ballpark of options as timeline would be the Boss DD500. I mainly mentioned this because you could get so much more out of those units than you could a single rack unit. Especially for the price you're willing to pay. :)

      But the downside of the rdd 20 is that they only go the maximum of 400 milliseconds but for leads I can have it at 400 milliseconds and Run Like Hell and U2 stuff can be at ether 380 or 390

    Hey Bjorn, thanks for your last answer. Here I have another question:
    Which is the more preferable set up at the end of the modularion line?
    Reverb > Delay or Delay > Reverb
    It is weird because I have the Flashback, and a full analog reverb pedal by SL Amp. The flashback does not take the volume down, but the reverb take at least 3 dB of the sound.
    Rarely I use the reverb.... but the 700 ms setup on the delay which is preferable just for the solos, does not fit for the verses or any accord style picking, so I want to launch my reverb pedal for those parts of my songs.

    • @gilmourishofficial
      @gilmourishofficial  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Reverb is usually placed last because you want to simulate a room ambience. Don't know why you experience a drop. It might be that your ears perceive it as a drop because you loose some dynamics in the tone or there are some issues between the pedals. Are your TC set for true bypass or buffered? Setting it to true bypass might cause a drop if you have many pedals on your board. I've written about reverb in this feature www.gilmourish.com/?p=199

      The delay is absolutely ok. It don't drop. I do not use buffers because all my pedals are true-bypassed. I do not want to sell this fine handmade reverb pedal and buy a hall of fame :D, but probably that going to happen :/

    Can you remake this video showing us how to set the tc flashback delay?

  • @simonbilleng2748
    @simonbilleng2748 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    How do one count repeats? I could easily hear the 10th or 11th repeats but then he starts playing run like hell and the graphic says 7 repeats.

      Count with ur finger as metronome, dont count with ur mind

    • @jburdsinfuse
      @jburdsinfuse 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Every note played gets 7...you’re getting a lot more than 10-11 repeats. Especially when you pedal the bass note - kind of the point of delay.

    • @simonbilleng2748
      @simonbilleng2748 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jburdsinfuse what are both of you talking about?
      Repeats means number of times the delay unit repeats the incoming signal, until its no longer audible.. I can hear 10 repeats on this video but he states it is set at 7 repeats..
      Maybe he was hearing 7 repeats in the room but the signal he recorded gets 10 repeats that we then hear when playing the youtube clip, I dont know.. but you are not making any sense

    • @jburdsinfuse
      @jburdsinfuse 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@simonbilleng2748 if you play a note, and it repeats seven times, you hear it seven times. If you play two notes back to back, the first series of delays is likely not finished. So now you’re hearing a string of notes, i.e., more than seven.
      If you have a tap tempo, tap it in, play what sounds good. No need to over complicate it with an exact note count in a demo. It’s music, not astrophysics.

    • @simonbilleng2748
      @simonbilleng2748 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jburdsinfuse but a delay unit doesnt work like that. You cant select how many notes it will repeat and then it stops. At least most dont. It will gradually decrease until you cant hear it anymore.
      Thats why I was raising the question how something that is clearly audible for 10+ times is considered by Bjorn to be a 7 note repeat setting.
      And for your other remark about this being music and not physics.. have you seen bjorns website? 😂 there are a lot of us who take gilmour stuff seriously.

    Nice job as always, Bjorn! Can you send me info how would you set TC Nova Delay for Comfortably Numb and Shine on? How ms, how many repeats, which mix level, and which tipe of delay, tape or digital? I would be grateful if you could help me. Thanks! Cheers from Croatia!

      I don't have the Nova so I can't help you with exact settings. Use the references in this video to set up yours.
