Growing up in Montreal in the 70’s, April Wine was definitely one of the top Canadian bands. Great songs. I’ve seen them numerous times in their hay-day in Mtl. Great live band 🤘🤘🇨🇦🇨🇦
The way you do Roller definitely sounds right to my ears. Just Between You And Me is a gorgeous guitar piece. Thanks for the lesson on this classic Canadian band.
Thanks for the Canada shout out...saw April Wine a few months ago and it brought me right back to my youth partying at bush bashes with April Wine blaring through the forest, good times thanks.
On Canada Day, no less! Greetings from Prince Edward Island (next to Nova Scotia)... in the same way the Midwest is a non-political region in the USA, we have the "Maritime" provinces: PEI, Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick. April Wine is arguably the biggest band to come out of the Maritimes. Thanks for the lesson!
Excellent Lesson! Thanks, David! As an 8th grader, I loved watching and listening to all of those sunburst guitars in their video for "Sign of the Gypsy Queen," on Mtv in 1982! Great Chordplay Lesson!
Many thanks for covering April Wine ! I live in the UK and I first became aware of April Wine at the age of 15 back in 1981 with 'I Like to Rock' and I then started to collect their albums such as 'First Glance', 'Harder Faster', 'Nature of the Beast', 'Power Play' and 'Animal Grace' . That line-up of the band are who I think of concerning AW. They were a big part of what was good about my teenage years .AW were fantastic as far as I am concerned and I still really enjoy listening to them regularly today. They sadly got precious little radio coverage here and both 'I Like to Rock' and 'Just Between You and Me' just missed out on reaching the top 40 in the charts. I feel that if either song had managed to break the top 40 then AW would have received the necessary exposure and their popularity would have exploded in the UK.
Love me some April Wine! They were in heavy rotation on WWCK 105 FM in Flint, Michigan when I was a teenager and I still spin their records today! I got to see them live 2 or 3 times in the prime years, ;First Glance', 'Harder....Faster', and 'Naturre of the Beast' are the trifeckta of kick ass Canadien Rock n' Roll!
April Wine is totally underrated for their ability to rock out. Harder Faster got us all laid one time or another. Thanks for the guitar lesson. I’m ready to start playing again.
hé nice, love April Wine. I went to Jerry Mercer's house at l'ile Perot because of my drummer friend who knew him. He is so down to earth and cool. He was cutting vegatable, preparing food for his family. He gave us a listen of the track tonight is a wonderfull time to fall in love before it was out and asked us if we liked it? lol to me it became a big hit on Frigate and that's exactly what I had said. I said man that's a hit. he smiled and said ya you think so? he was very pleased. hahaha we stayed there for about 45 minutes.
April Wine...Aldo Nova...Frank Marino....Saga...Rush....BTO.....Triumph....Loverboy....Bryan Adams.....etc....it's amazing how many Canadian bands and Artists have made Music history!
From Detroit and this band was a radio staple that I grew up on. I forgot how much I love the song Roller! Such a great band! Thanks for the reminder and great lesson as always!
I saw April Wine open for Nazareth at Cobo and headline a show at Royal Oak Music Theater in 81. Then I saw them open for BOC at Pine Knob in 95. More recently, I saw them play an outdoor show at a festival in Vancouver in 2017 while visiting family there. They are just an awesome band.
I grew up with April Wine. I first heard them when I was in about grade 7. Being Canadian I heard a lot of April Wine on local radio. Could Have Been A Lady was probably one of the first songs I learned on guitar.
Wow. I had to check this out when i saw April Wine. Grew up near Sarnia on the US side and was lucky to get all these great Canadian bands on the radio. Plus with Canadian TV as a kid I saw SCTV, Super Dave, Hockey Night In Canada and a little nudity here and there. Lol
"Roller is just a kick ass song". My man you could not have said it better! Thank you sooo much for this awesome video! All your videos are great but this one seemed like you awesome it up even more! Please keep up the great work! You are a true inspiration!
Awesome episode! I've seen April Wine many times and met Myles a few; always a great show! I'd love to see a Chordplay of Trooper, another Canadian band!
I love April Wine since I first heard them on a compilation record. Your analysis here suggests they are really rooted in the 70's rock grooves-riffs-sounds, however they always sound different to me, very fresh and modern up untill today. Thanks for this really intersting vid
Thanks! Myles Goodwyn came to my local area with some fellow musicians recently and put on a great performance. Myles is 75 and still has a great voice. He is truly a talented man.😀👍
👍👍👍... Love AW and Myles is a very under rated writer. The lineup of Myles, Brian, Gary and Jerry I believe was their best by far. They did some excellent work and have some awesome albums from that mid 70's to mid 80's and a few real good ones in the 90's. Thanks for sharing a band that seems to get lost in the mire of all the other music of that time. Myles just retired recently but has endorsed a new lead singer to carry on with the band and they are touring again which is nice to see.
they were the opener at the 2nd Texxas Jam, we came into the stadium... the smell of coconut suntan lotion and weed... they were just finishing one song, and going into I like to Rock... Epic.
Thanks for covering this band! I knew you would do them proud. When they first came on the radio, back in the day, my ears perked up. And I still play their songs to this day. Also, always dug the video of theirs on “ I Like To Rock”. If that song doesn’t get you moving then it’s time to see if you still have a pulse. 😂
I grew up just south of the U.S./Canada border and April Wine was on everybody's car stereo. Then I moved to Arizona and nobody knew who they were. Whenever I play the intro to Before the Dawn, I feel like I'm back in high school, dreaming about a girl named Laura.
Glad David you're doing some of these long 'forgotten' amazing bands. I know this is video for 1 but there was a band named Gamelon that was f'in INCREDIBLE that I have not heard anyone talk about. Damn shame!
6:35 'I Like To Rock' ... viewers should check out the outro: it is a fugato passage that combines the hook with Day Tripper and Satisfaction... though it is bold to juxtapose _your_ hook with The Beatles and the Stones, it is a neat moment
Sault Saint Marie Michigan here. Did not miss out on April Wine growing up. I play Just Between and Sign of the Gypsy Queen...I've seen some new tips from you here for "Just" - much thanks!
Damn, I miss these guys. Can't remember which early 80s year it was, but Nature of the Beast was pretty much played non stop...loudly. I still grab the 6 string and crank out Crash and Burn every now and then.
Can you do a video on a band from Detroit called The Rockets. Great riffs and their cover of Fleetwwod Mac's Oh Well is better than the original IMO. Keep up the good work🤘🏻🎸
Always loved April Wine, and they're completely underrated as a guitar band.... their 21st century schizoid man cover was amazing ! How about this Wishbone Ash chordplay I've been requesting for decades if not centuries ?!?!
How do you get that gibson to sound that growly, its awesome man it sounds damn good, i have a valvestate vs65r marshall amp ,what settings do you use to get that sound ,what pickups do you have , thats the sound ive been trying to get for years , and a bunch of guitars and amps. Please help. Thanks.
THANK YOU DAVID! Finally, I think you cracked Roller. The only “secret” are heard was dropping the last note A to Ab in the second D/Db/B/A run. Maybe…
Great choice ! Saw them in 1980 at Monsters of Rock - it sounds like they had been around quite a while before that. Before the Dawn is very like the intro to Ozzy s Killer of Giants with Jake E Lee. Talking of Ozzy how's about some Bernie Torme ? 😀
Grew up in Montreal in the '70s too. During the mid-70's I got to see a band called All the Young Dudes which included Bob Segarini, Brian Greenway, and at least two of the Henmann brothers. Three guitar attack, great great band but never made it to a good recording. Brian may be one of the very best Canadian guitar players ever, and doesn't get enough recognition.
I remember it like it was yesterday, it was 1976 and I just turn 12, my mother wouldn't allow this R&R stuff played in the house so I honestly never heard it, then when my older sister was watching out for me one night she put Oowatanite with the bell in the beginning and my love for April Wine and R&R never faltered And I hate to tell you but I just went on YT slowed it down, Moffet is playing a triplet he's only using 2 fingers his pinky is off the fret board and I can't really see what Miles is playing
My goodness! That brought back some long forgotten memories... I was the only kid in my Home Counties UK school in ‘78-‘80 who knew who April Wine were, and who bought their albums. Ditto Triumph. Everyone else was either into Queen/ Genesis/Yes, British heavy metal (Samson, Saxon, early Maiden, ‘Stained Class’ era Judas Priest etc) or new wave. Knew I was on to a damn good thing ... until I foolishly sold every single one of my rock albums to fund the purchase of my first 35mm SLR camera. Time to revisit, I think.
I like the homage they pay to The Beatles and the Rolling stones at the end of I Like to Rock combining Day tripper and satisfaction.
Growing up in Montreal in the 70’s, April Wine was definitely one of the top Canadian bands. Great songs. I’ve seen them numerous times in their hay-day in Mtl.
Great live band 🤘🤘🇨🇦🇨🇦
We used to listen to Chom FM from Montreal in Burlington VT back in the day. April Wine, Nazareth and Triumph were on the playlist!
Canadians sure produced great lead singers who played lead guitar (Myles and Rik).
Pierrefonds 67-78, same feelings.
April Wine? How cool! I did not think that anyone still knows them. Thanks! Wish I could give two thumbs up.
The way you do Roller definitely sounds right to my ears. Just Between You And Me is a gorgeous guitar piece. Thanks for the lesson on this classic Canadian band.
Great lesson. A band that never got it's due in America. Keep up the great work Dave!!!🎸
Thanks for the Canada shout out...saw April Wine a few months ago and it brought me right back to my youth partying at bush bashes with April Wine blaring through the forest, good times thanks.
Bush bashes and April Wine. Those were the days!!!
I absolutely loved it... The 70's, for myself and thousands? Sign of the Gypsy Queen! Killer band, awesome lesson David.
And Alberta
We used to do "Roller" as a cover in a band I was in back in the 80's. Glad you dig it too.
Excellent Lesson! Thanks, David! As an 8th grader, I loved watching and listening to all of those sunburst guitars in their video for "Sign of the Gypsy Queen," on Mtv in 1982! Great Chordplay Lesson!
Yeah, AW always had really cool guitars ! Plus I was enjoying listening to 'Sign of the Gypsy Queen' over the last several evenings !
Just played roller @ a bonfire while cooking 🥘 on my new 18 hot dog roller! Lol you rock 🍺’ski.🤟
April Wine is totally underrated for their ability to rock out. Harder Faster got us all laid one time or another. Thanks for the guitar lesson. I’m ready to start playing again.

I think they still tour
My favorite band
I been playing April Wine this
week. Love them. Thanks.

Thanks for posting this! I love April Wine..👍🇨🇦
I love April Wine! Thanks, David.
Wow, > Just between you and Me< this brought back memories. Thanks for the video and lesson. First glance was my favorite album from them.
My first concert at the Checkerdome, St Louis USA back in the day.
They kept a spotlight on the drummer the entire show. The guy was a Beast!
Great upload. One of my fav bands growing up. Saw them in MN early 80s.

I’ve seen April wine about 30 times, great band
My favorite Canadian band! In upstate New York, in the early 80’s, the local radio station would play Just Between You and Me everyday. 👍
I grew up in CT. and the 3 Rock stations played April Wine all the time.
GREAT! will be breaking out my April Wine albums today for sure!! Thanks
The whole worlds goin crazy one of my favorites
Crazy underrated band! Found them in the early 80's still love them
yep everything Is under rated, under rated under rated under rated under rated where do you people come from.
April Wine are such a huge part of my musical childhood here in Canada. Well done....DING DING DING DING DING DING........OOWATANITE!!
What a blast from the past.
Great LNL! Thank you for including "Say Hello", a favorite of mine.
Awesome episode! I've seen April Wine many times and met Myles a few; always a great show! I'd love to see a Chordplay of Trooper, another Canadian band!

Great Band with rocking vocals and guitar
I need to blow the dust off of my old April Wine records!
Thanks! Myles Goodwyn came to my local area with some fellow musicians recently and put on a great performance. Myles is 75 and still has a great voice. He is truly a talented man.😀👍
Love your tone and vibrato on those single notes!!
Grew up on April Wine. Thanks for this vid. Cheers!

Holdsworth to April Wine!!! It doesn’t get any better my friend!! Happy Canada Day!!! 🇨🇦
Love it man! Have been an April Wine fan seems like my whole life!
The Nature of the Beast is a great album!
My favorite album in high school.
thanks Dave you're the best 🎉
Roller! Shes a roller! A high roller baby! My favorite April Wine song.
She's a rolla!
High Rolla baby
My old man got a copy of Nature of the beast when I was about 8. Such a rocking record and a great album cover. Fantastic band. Thanks man

Awesome! Thanks!!😊
Their song Crash And Burn is as heavy as anything else was at the time. Some fiery solos on that one. Great band. Great lesson, Dave!
Didn't think anybody else liked April wine got just about all there albums including live ones way back in the 70 & 80
This helps considerably!!!!
I grew up just south of the U.S./Canada border and April Wine was on everybody's car stereo. Then I moved to Arizona and nobody knew who they were. Whenever I play the intro to Before the Dawn, I feel like I'm back in high school, dreaming about a girl named Laura.
Do the solo to Say Hello!! Love the melody, and you would sound so good on it!
If you see kay is really hard to find.
great band!!
Kick ass! Now you have to do videos on Triumph, Anvil, Tom Cochrane, and Helix!
He did an amazing Rik Emmett video recently.
@@voronOsphere I saw that after posting.🤦♂️ I'll take the L on that one.
Helix hell yeah!
Glad David you're doing some of these long 'forgotten' amazing bands. I know this is video for 1 but there was a band named Gamelon that was f'in INCREDIBLE that I have not heard anyone talk about. Damn shame!
MY condolences to Myles and his families love his music
Nice job bud. I am a music teacher and going to do some April Wine Covers. Just looking for ideas. Very effective lesson. 3 Thumbs up.
Fantastic band i saw them live at Donington uk in 1980 👍🤘🤘
6:35 'I Like To Rock' ... viewers should check out the outro: it is a fugato passage that combines the hook with Day Tripper and Satisfaction... though it is bold to juxtapose _your_ hook with The Beatles and the Stones, it is a neat moment

I wonder if David does this lesson in real time? This is some excellent teaching!
Another great lesson Dave 👍
fun fact - the cover of Harder Faster is from an intersection in Ottawa, Canada.
GREAT lesson, Bro.
Gratitude, Sir.
Have you ever considered a Chordplay segment on Ian Bairnson of the Alan Parsons Project? Such beautifully melodic solos. Or too simple?
Always loved April Wine, and they're completely underrated as a guitar band.... their 21st century schizoid man cover was amazing ! How about this Wishbone Ash chordplay I've been requesting for decades if not centuries ?!?!
Upvote for Wishbone Ash

Awesome band! One of my favorite albums is Attitude they released in ‘93. I was hoping you would do that one too!
Nature of the Beast came out when I was in high school. Monster album.
Enough is Enough is my fav
My fav before the dawn sign of the gypsy Queen outstanding tracks in my opinion
Great band the song you could of been a lady was inspired by Why Don’t You Quit by Eddie Harris
IMHO Myle`s ballad Love has Remembered Me eclipses Just between you and me.
Dave, would love to see a Indigenous chord play. Really like their self titled album. It’s like Soundgarden- AIC meets SRV and Hendrix.
THANK YOU DAVID! Finally, I think you cracked Roller. The only “secret” are heard was dropping the last note A to Ab in the second D/Db/B/A run. Maybe…

Until I heard you play the little nuances I would never noticed thanks 🤔
"no one ever told the boy, rock n roll is a vicious game"
Hell Yeah!
Nice’ a lil more from Nature of the Beast!
The roller riff it hard to get down exactly

Cool video while The whole worlds going crazy.....
Those chords in Tonite sound a little like Triumph's Hold On intro chords. 🤔
RAM JAM.......
I've heard Tonight on a movie can't remember what it was 🤔
did you do Rush and Triumph?
Yep, there are several Rush-related lessons and Triumph/Rik Emmett too!
Do a search on the channel to help find them.
: )
David did a recent & excellent Rik Emmett Lesson. And he's done both Rush & Triumph Lessons in the past.
@@LateNightLessons how about night ranger and saga ;-)
@@voronOsphere that's cool. thanks.
