Brewster, you don't have an equal on the internet. How you just pick up some artist's tunes for Chordplay, then just "here they are, in real time, in real speed" play it for us is unreal. Lots of people play things and break them down, nobody does it while learning it the night before (presumably, and potentially always true), then playing it mistake free for the rest of us. Unbelievable. In addition, you don't pick artists with simple major and minor chords. You pick the wild and crazy ones and play the effortlessly. Cheers to you..

Been digging song for America for 40 years.....epic.....best band ever, saw them 5 times live. Sad that Steve Walsh retired, saw him do a handstand on his keyboard while playing

Kansas always looked so different ,no trendy outfits ,from dungarees to white suits ,hard to pin down ,and their music is so varied ,from euphoric to melancholic, Steve Morse has inspired so many, from John Petrucci,to Steve Vai and such a humble guy,his videos ,are so well presented ,with useful tips, and using tunes ,as examples for technical exercises ,a joy to watch, and he stresses fun,and that you need to enjoy your playing, such a great guy,yet still humble.

One of my favorite guitar tones... that 'parked wah' Les Paul/Marshall growl was awesome... not unlike Neal Schon's tone on a lot of classic Journey albums.

Thanks so much for giving KANSAS some props. One of the greatest bands of all time. Great playing on your part and very cool to see you recognize “silhouettes in disguise “. Always been one of my favorite tunes and the riffs and playing in that song is incredible.

Great dissection of Silhouettes in Disguise. I immediately selected this album to listen to while working in a record store in 1986. Not only because I’m a huge Kansas fan, but knowing Steve Morse was now in the band. Another great song that is totally overlooked buried deep on this album….Three Pretenders. Great guitar riffs, solo and vocals on this one. Thanks for another awesome lesson Dave!

I've already got used to taking my hat off watching you analyze musicians and moments hardly ever mentioned.
While, if I can name any, even my absolute favourites are on Point of Know Return and Leftoverture (ohhh... those stacked melodies of Miracles out of Nowhere...), the almost unnoticed Power and In the Spirit of Things contain material such as Musicatto, Ghosts, One Big Sky, Rainmaker and Bells of Saint James that not every band can put together during all its career.
Sidenote: Billy Greer's pjt, Seventh Key is also worth the attention.

Beautiful Dave. I thought I knew Kansas. My Dad took me and my brother to our first concert ever and it was Kansas and Heart. Municipal Auditorium Nashville. Strange smell at concerts back then though.

Reminding me I need to listen to more Kansas...
    I love Leftoverture.
Turns out that Dino Elefante's (Shrapnel producer-songwriting) brother was in Kansas from 82-84.

I SHARE YOUR LOVE OF CHORD VOICINGS /PROGRESSIONS[WITHOUT THE ACTUAL THEORETICAL KNOWLEDGE],the different sounds and the way they connect either acoustically or distorted ,palm muted ,theyre what make music interesting ,and provoke mood, another fascinating look at a great band ,with so much diversity in their songs thanks again Dave.

These are some serious chord break downs, thank you again for this insightful lesson. A great amount of stretching prior to attempting some of these chords will be a requirement for me.
I like your description of "busy" when describing the playing style. Its how I would describe the guitar playing on the Cry of Love first album: Brother.

I've never listened to Kansas. Maybe they're bigger in America than in Europe. Or maybe I just missed out on them. But I really love prog in the veins of King Crimson so I'm sure gonna check them out after seeing this. Thanks David! 👍

Well, I don’t know about anyone else but David sounds better than the actual recordings. The harder rock influence definitely comes out, and sounds killer! 🤘🏻
After watching this and going back through their library, I found “Freaks of Nature”. Great, hard driving prog rockin tune!

Aha that's how the interlude goes! I was just playing it recent and the G/A, F/A, never sounded quite right with the voicings I used.

Freakin' Silhouettes in Disguise. Didn't see that one coming! I think I actually heard Morse on that album before I'd even heard the Dregs, and it's still my favorite solo of his. What a brilliant, rockin' tune. I've only been able to find a weird piano transcription of it online.

Kansas, incredible musicians, and how they all worked together to make some insane music, back in the early days Rich said Kerry Livgren would come in and have complete songs all done, completely, for all the members many times, complete songwriting genius, Rich said not only is he an incredible guitarist but also an excellent keyboardist,
Another insane musician in Kansas is David Ragsdale, not only an obvious awesome violinist but he's an excellent guitarist as well, I like his version of the solo "Hold on" on the "live at the whiskey"album
Nothing over-the-top hard but just great phrasing and tone and feeling.
Kansas they are much more than dust in the wind and carry on my wayward son they got some great music even back in early seventies their stuff is worth listening to...

LATE NIGHT LESSONS, Thanks for the video showing the chords. Can you do a video on just only Kansas Acoustic guitar chords they used because they use a lot of weird chords when playing acoustic guitar parts. Same weird chords used by Martin Barre from Jethro Tull used acoustic guitar chords. Tony iommi uses some weird chords also when playing acoustic guitar parts
