There is a white piece of plastic in the latch that needs to be removed to make the door operate properly. Its put there to prevent damage during shipping. They used to use tape, but I guess they like this better, but never updated the documentation. You can even see it is there at 46:40. 2 seconds with a flathead and your door will work properly.
"Anderson" doors and windows are very good quality and have that unique closing latch on the doors. They have used that for many years. It's odd until you get used to it.
@2:06..Fiefdom is the correct word Gregory ..from now on call Kyle "My Lord" The building looks incredible, great job as always, the porch really sets it off.
Good luck to you with Anderson windows. I have them on my house along with a sliding patio door. They are horrible. Will never use Anderson again. When I built the house we had to have a tech come out to seal the drafts in the windows 3 separate times. Didn't do much so I need to put plastic on every winter.
Hi Kyle and Greg (@RRbuildings) the engineering fluff on the sticker is how much sunlight comes through the panel. Solar heat gain coefficient (SHGC) how much thermal heat is transmitted through the window into the house. Ideally you want less in the summer (keep the insider cooler) and more in the winter (reduce heating costs). The value gives you the average value per area of window based on the glass, frame and insulation material. And visible transmittance is how much sunlight comes through. Your windows are top quality products which I imagine is reflected in the price.
Setting the door would have been a lot easier if you just grinded the hump out in the beginning. That way you have solid contact throughout the entire threshold. Otherwise if you don’t want to grind out the hump, you can install ice and barrier in 6” increments and use those as your “shims” until it’s perfectly level. Hope this helps😁
I’m a locksmith and all of those multipoint locks I’ve seen have a latch to hold the door shut. Are you sure there’s not a plastic cap on the edge of the door holding the latch in? A lot of them Also have a small plastic cap holding another tab in . If the small tab is out the dead bolt won’t extend. When you close the door the strike plate pushes the small tab in so the deadbolt will operate. That is to keep someone from extending the deadbolt then slamming the door and damaging the lock. Those locks give a lot of trouble if the door is not aligned very well and people get tough with them trying to extend the multipoint function.
Look on the door at the latch and see if you find a plastic piece wedged into the latching mechanism. If so, that piece needs to be taken out and then the door should actually latch! The door is definitely designed to latch. Pulling up engages all the other points of the door. Its a sweet door.
For the U factor, it is very simple. 1 / 0.27 (your U factor) = 3.703 So this the R-Value of your windows R3. Normally, triple glaze goes to R6. The solor heat gain is a pellicule on the glass that block the heat. You can choose wich side of the glass you want it and depending on the side, this pellicule will block more or less heat.
You should have taken a grinder and ground down the hump. Like you said it's a garage but I think with movement and use of the door over time you may develop operational issues.
GREAT VIDEOS. A word to the wise, and I learned this from an unfortunate experience. When you were using your brad or finish nailer on the window extension jams, you had your fingers too close one time. I once was using my nailer with a 2" galvanized finish nail, and the nail turned 90 degrees and went in (of all places) under one of my finger nails. Need I add anything further?
Kyle, I feel like you could just use painter's tape to secure the flaps of siga tape to the window pane while you transport and install the window... free up a pair of hands 🤷
I get you trying to go cost friendly, but using Anderson windows when you are using the best of the best for the rest of the build, go with Marvin man. I promise you won’t be having to spend time putting on jam extensions
Someone else beat me to the joke. No joke, that’s one saweet dream shop, Kyle & Greg. Awesome job. Now drop a front porch (and maybe a secret back hot tub) on it, and voilà: Shop Heaven!
I regretted using Anderson double hung windows After having them for ten years some lowers started to rot in the bottom right corner. Anderson would only provide replacements for the rotting ones, they wouldn’t install them. A few years later and the remaining had to be replaced, and yes I had to do it Fast forward 10 years, windows with full morning sun would break just the outside glass, very odd because it was a circular hole I hope you have better luck
You could just grind the hump out of the middle. I've done that a couple of times to get a entryway level. I have used concrete sealant in all the entryways also. I've used a ramped jam if there's an inch or so step up through the doorway.
Love the content, don't mean to sound picky, but why not sit the window in 2 inches off the sheathing and use the flange to guide your caulking gun around behind the flange then just push in the last 2"?
Our American doors are still pretty much crap, imo. In my (almost) passive house house I installed European tilt turn windows along with the manufacturer's doors too and the doors were like a bank safe, like zero air infiltration. And nobody knew how to use them. lol And I love all things Siga. I don't want to know how much I spent for all the different tapes but the one for the windows with the two separate strips for peeling off is really useful and ingenious. I didn't install Fentrim with the windows, I waited until after any gaps were filled in with foam, then I installed the tape.
SHGC is a metric of energy transference while the visible transmittance is the percentage of light that’s allowed through the panes with their various films and other filters.
@RRBuildings What size is the gap between the rough opening and the windows/doors? Looks like 3/8"ish on each side? These video's really help out a lot. Good on you for taking such pride in your work. I'm learning a ton, so thank you for the content you provide.
That’s a nice looking door! Great job and I don’t care that the video is out of order. 😂 Too bad it’s not April 1st, you could tell people you had to remove the porch because you forgot to put the windows and door in first, lol.
I think if you lever down it will make the handle latch normal ...... Then up is the upper and lower latches and you can turn the dead bolt if I remember correctly
There is a JLG kit called a SKYGLAZIER that attaches to the boom so you can set windows and glass panels (or whatever) on a support outside of the lift. Check it out for the next one.
As I watch how hard you work to seal every possible leak of water and air on this building...when I see the big houses in the background, NOT shops, I think to myself those buildings don't have HALF the care and consideration into them as this "simple shop"...LOL
Kinda new here but I Love your videos. What’s your top 5 tips to be successful in your business? I’m Thinking about going out on my own within a couple years.
I am trying to learn. I know ... not a lot about construction. Like.. Why do you put on jam extentions? Is the window too small? A little explanation goes a long way for me 😅
Like the dark hardware but, I have the same. You have to be very careful using the key. Mine has scratched and looks terrible. Should have gone with the stainless.
Solar heat gain is calculated on which way the window is facing which while under direct sun light. How much does the buildings overall temperature change during both summer and winter since the sun also is lower in the winter and higher in the summer
I'm really not a fan of the Anderson product due to the door to jam hinges, the wood jam extensions they use rather than giving you an option of a wider jam, the plastic nailing flanges that are supposed to hold up all of that weight and they don't and I've had issues with the glass fogging up a few times. I've also had a few of the windows crack on me. My biggest issue is the door hinges not holding up. I think that the issue is that the gauge of the hinges are less than what they should be. They look really nice and they are one of the most popular high end brands that you can get. I just wish that they would address some of these issues. I've installed hundreds of doors and windows of this brand.
RE: sawdust... I remember hearing about a couple building a house (probably in the 70s or 80s) and both got extremely sick from the sawdust from the pressure treated lumber they were using. I'm pretty sure the chemicals have since been changed.
It was from from the so cald 'chipwood floor' and/or 'chipwood wall plate' from that time - also the sawdust ?....nahhhh never hear about that. It was the reactions and release (escape) from the gas comming from the glu and chemical treated chips.
On the info sticker of the windows. with glass the lower the value , the better the thermal insulation is . on glas they use the Solar heat gain coefficiënt, but see it as the R value of your wall insulation. in comparison, if you would take the thickness from your wall insulation and devide that with the lambda value of that insulation , you get the R value. the only difference between the two is that the way they calculate the glass is based off heat travel per m2 per W/m2K Watt/square meter Kelvin , or maybe Fahrenheit per sqeare feet on your sticker. but in essence it means how much temperature you gain [summer] or loose [winter] per degree per m2 ,thats why lower is better. and with insulation its based off resistence from the material itself, so how fast can heat and cold travel thru the material. hope this makes sense.
If it’s a covered porch and not exposed to constant driving rain ? I don’t do a pan ! I tape it and support the threshold with a piece of P/T that’s G Taped and install. Never got a call back !
Greg needs to learn the term “tocayo”, (toe-ki-yo). It means someone who shares your name. My name is Greg. Anyway, I look forward to your videos because not only are you a well-above-average builder with ethics, but you are also educational and entertaining. I am glad that Tocayo has been mic’d up for the recent past. His insights are ‘deep’.
I’ve been installing Andersen Windows and Doors in my new build. I like the product but the instructions are horrible. The instructions for my gliding patio doors have instructions for 3 different versions so you have to search for the instructions relevant to yours. Same with my architectural entry door.
Wow, the porch blew off!
It is held on with magnets and velcro so the porch is removable for easy cleaning. 😂
It must be Bluetooth 🤣
First his buildings shake now his porches fly off 🤦♂️
Best comment 😂
The porch is a prop, guess they forgot the detail to put it back.😂🤣

Greg’s “ok” when installing the door was hilarious.
@2:06..Fiefdom is the correct word Gregory ..from now on call Kyle "My Lord"

The black and white flashback to Greg removing the window strap made me lol
Good luck to you with Anderson windows. I have them on my house along with a sliding patio door. They are horrible. Will never use Anderson again. The hump in the concrete under the door , will haunt your dreams forever, or not ! Enjoyed the video as always !
The butyl tape on the door sill will do a great job of keeping out insects
as well as moisture and drafts. Good idea!

You most definitely need to space your sheathing, especially when using the nine or ten foot OSB. Great stuff Kyle and Greg. Keep it up!
20:51 "From the windoooow, to the waaalll"
Glad I wasn't the only one.
🤣
I was so ready for Greg to start rapping
Man o man.....you drive me NUTS!!!! And by the look on Greg's face many times, I'm sure he feels the same way.
Greg obviously has the patience of a saint.

21:52 missed opportunity to call it Fentrum Silver
IMO Casement tend to rot faster than DBL hung windows. Been replacing older windows for 20+ years. :)
You should have taken a grinder and ground down the hump. Like you said it's a garage but I think with movement and use of the door over time you may develop operational issues.
Kyle and Greg do awesome work and I've learned a lot from them.
I’m looking forward to seeing how you build out the interior.
GREAT VIDEOS. A word to the wise, and I learned this from an unfortunate experience. 🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳 The bugle in the doorway on the concrete to the door is a fantastic idea way to go 🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯
Came here to say this. We always just used LEXEL brand clear silicone and just put tons of it. But this is a Great idea😳
Kyle, I feel like you could just use painter's tape to secure the flaps of siga tape to the window pane while you transport and install the window... free up a pair of hands 🤷
Why was the porch build before this? Whocares I guess. The rod part had me going lol. looking good guys!😊
the Princess bride is the GOAT!
Amazing that it took only two great minds to follow printed instructions. 👍👍👍
I get you trying to go cost friendly, but using Anderson windows when you are using the best of the best for the rest of the build, go with Marvin man. I promise you won’t be having to spend time putting on jam extensions

What happened to the porch you just built?
lol missed a video
It's removable...newly designed
@@2nickles647 “detachable”.

You can't go wrong with Anderson windows. Anderson has a factory in Menomonie, Wi. just 14 miles from me.
SHGC is a metric of energy transference while the visible transmittance is the percentage of light that’s allowed through the panes with their various films and other filters.
I hate that door looks to much like a window 😅 that's just me but amazing work guys 👏
When you do your air test it's all gonna be garage door draft. But still that's really good.
Love the Sasco products. Or alteast the Lexel I use to seal chimney flashing. They have a sample kit?
Great job as always guys. 👍👍🏴🏴
I didn’t see the door get caulked on the nailing fin. Like the windows.

Sawdust can kill. Spontaneous combustion!
I know what you mean about the latch not automatically closing. My Andersen storm door is like that.
As I watch how hard you work to seal every possible leak of water and air on this building...when I see the big houses in the background, NOT shops, I think to myself those buildings don't have HALF the care and consideration into them as this "simple shop"...LOL
I swear I just saw your picture on a Home Depot ad on Reddit.
I thought it was mug shots at the post office. 😆
Wondering what is the cost of all the sealing products used on one window or door?
Kinda new here but I Love your videos. What’s your top 5 tips to be successful in your business? I’m Thinking about going out on my own within a couple years.
Where in the United States can I get the tape?
Thanks
or the weatherlogic sheathing!
Have you considered grinding the concrete prior to door installation to make sure its "perfectly flat"?
Clint just keep up the great videos cheers bud
I am trying to learn. I know ... not a lot about construction. Like.. Why do you put on jam extentions? Is the window too small? A little explanation goes a long way for me 😅
It’s for the depth of the wall framing. A thicker wall takes a longer jamb
The porch is gone! Good thing the window opening wasn't a 1/2" too small. Who makes the pencil you use? Things are looking real nice.
Are those I joists above on 12" centers? Man really tight.
KYLE, foam knee boards in lift for windows and standing
Hey @RRBuildings this video was in wrong order in the playlist
Also would something like thinset, or leveling compound be worth the effort? Just for like under the sil to get a perfectly level threshold?
With the hinges back in the door jamb so far, what will keep the door from being swung open to far and hitting the door against the trim?
Not found of the door handle having to lift it up so it latches. Other than that, looks great
The seals being on the door will catch on crap you are trying to bring into the building. Just FYI.
I'm really not a fan of the Anderson product due to the door to jam hinges, the wood jam extensions they use rather than giving you an option of a wider jam, the plastic nailing flanges that are supposed to hold up all of that weight and they don't and I've had issues with the glass fogging up a few times. Is it worth it to use some LVL boards for the doorways to avoid the issues with cupping and shimming madness?
It was repossessed for non work?
Should have gone with Marvin door... it does have a catch and 2 opposite vertical rods.
Looking good.
1/u factor is your r value for windows. SGHC(solar heat gain coefficient) is faction of how much heat is going to be gained by your interior space.
The door latches that way to keep people from just slamming it, and leaving. ????
Man I do like that tape!!! Thx for that one.
Through the roof sashco link?
How many days did it take to install that door?
What door model is that?
RE: sawdust... I remember hearing about a couple building a house (probably in the 70s or 80s) and both got extremely sick from the sawdust from the pressure treated lumber they were using. I'm pretty sure the chemicals have since been changed.

I remember that show, 20/20 mystery illness type show. They framed the whole house with pressure treated 😅
Finally I’m first to like a video 😊
congrats and thanks
I never like these videos all though i do like these videos 😂😂😂😂😂😂
Wow no porch must have been a dream.
I really prefer (and will only have) casement outswing windows!!!
First time I’ve ever seen the door handle below the lock. You guys sure the door isn’t upside down?
Certain brands are that way.
From the windooooooo to the wall!

Hahaha

I know one thing if you ever do have to fix anything good luck getting to it 😅
Saw dust has never killed anyone QUICKLY
Coffee and sawdust. A craftsman's curse. Especially if they are in the same cup.
Back to the future episode!
Once your GRABBO reaches into the green you shut it off Kyle ! The manufactures states it can explode if you do not ! Kind of, sort of, Not really ?

Hey we were just wondering why is the door look so small what size door is this could have probably made it a lot bigger it's our suggestion😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
The Princess Bride
is an Excellent Movie!
NOT Watching It Is.....
INCONCEIVABLE!!!
Quality Sells Itself
All Day Long! ☮️
You keep using that word, I don't think it means what you think it means.
Easiest door handle you’ve ever installed because Greg installed it! Lol
