I hope VR gets an open source solution, i dont *want* a headset from one company that has a monopoly on the VR niche, i want a small company that is founded by someone who cares.
Luckily larger companies pulling out like they do these days here and there does open up the opportunity for smaller businesses to take part. I wouldn't be surprised if that will be here in due time and I agree with you and will also happily join the smaller companies to support them as much as I can!
VR is dead because instead of products becoming cheaper with time, they're getting only more and more expensive - hell even existing headsets are seeing price increases. It never was about complexity, there's tons of people wanting to get in. But with the increasing cost of living worldwide there is less income for luxury items like VR headsets. Until someone starts selling budget oriented headsets with barebones features to the wide audience it's going downhill.
