Great vid Caleb & THANK YOU, particularly re: your very first Q & A; a subject, as a professional myself in the business, I've probably shared, advised on, and performed few three to four hundred times(!) over the decades. The environment (room) itself is the #1 "upgradeable component" in most of my client's, friend's & even peer groups' spaces. To echo your advice, "Look at, learn about, and tweak your music listening & movie viewing acoustics before buying or upgrading to the latest A/V widget." Kudos.
Excuse me, did you say episode 60?! 🤯 Congrats man! It's crazy to me that it seems like you were talking about starting this series just a few months ago and now I've probably seen 40+ of these! Here's to many more 🥂
The Qinlianf surge protector you talk about in this video, Audioholics recommended it a few years ago. It's WAY cheaper on Amazon. $10 to $15 rather than $35. Comes in white or black. I have 2 myself. But yeah, Walmart is a rip off on this product. I'd put an Amazon link in the description of this video. Love this video series by the way. 👍
FYI turning off HDMI-CEC on my Samsung S90C ALSO turns off the eARC/ARC function. So with CEC off no audio goes to the connected audio device thru the HDMI eARC/ARC cable.
8:37 thank you for answering this, my sony xbr850c broke recently so im using and old sharp roku tv i had then i noticed my q950a soundbar would start turning on on its own even when the tv was off, at least i know what can be causing the issue or maybe how to solve it. Thanks Caleb
In my opinion the next step, after what is said in the video, would be a good amp. Perhaps the most neglected component of most people’s home theater experience. If a person has spent hundreds or thousands on speakers, then powering them off a receiver really limits their capability. Part of the reason for that is because the manufacturers are essentially lying when they advertise wattage. They say 140 watts for a receiver capable of a 7.1 speaker setup but many people don’t realize they are only getting 40 watts or less with all channels driven. If you can’t change your room setup and already have decent speakers, then an amp might be a good choice.
Just wanted to add to the soundbar turning on randomly issue. It could also be a setting on the tv (or sound bar) related to auto-sensing an input (on the eARC port… so semi (or directly?) related to HDMI-CEC. But if it’s what I suggested, he still may be able to have CEC enabled globally so he can still utilize it on other devices.
About the AVR upgrades, the Oberon 7 is very particular about placement and toe-in (check NRD's review and conversations with Dali). Also, with Audyssey use pillows to hold up the mic, I used a mic stand and it produced vastly different results.
Yep love your channel and I've been a subscriber for years but please make it much easier to find links for the products you recommend as i cannot find the links for the power output device you recommend many thanks Nick
Dolby Prologic II is superior to Dolby Surround and it's a tragedy that it's nowhere to be found any longer, but hey, at least Dolby doesn't have to pay Jim Fosgate any royalties!
💯💯💯. I just "upgraded" my 11 year old Pioneer Elite receiver to keep up with the times and the first thing I noticed was my new receiver doesn't have it and I was so bummed. I've had it for so long that I just took it for granted, and didn't realize it had gone away in newer AVRs. I miss it every day for normal TV watching.
I was hoping the LG C3 would have a nice price drop. But they dropped the C4 to just below C3 and the C3 price stayed the same. What are you doing Amazon...
The struggle is real! I’m looking to scrap my old paradigm cinema series 5.1 being pushed by a 7 year old Yamaha RX-A750. Do I go the sound bar/Sony Quad route? Or new bookshelves with a $1,500’sh dollar receiver 😮💨. And yes, my room isn’t conducive with couch against the wall lol
Fun episode! What were those little black things you plug in the wall that have usba and usbc plugs as well as electric connections? Look really handy! What is the brand and name of them?
Wall Charger, Surge Protector, QINLIANF 5 Outlet Extender with 4 USB Charging Ports (4.8A Total) 3-Sided 1680J Power Strip Multi Plug Adapter Spaced for Home Travel Office (3U1C)
Obssessed with this channel more so recently due to getting a new tv i currently have samsung q90r and looking to go maninly oled route, looked at most big hitters today qn900d, s95d, qn95d , a95l & g4 each time i go to a different store i come away with a new favourite.... the struggle is real
Request: a yearly video on the best value tv's found at Walmart for black-firday sales... asking b/c after 5 years my Samsung q755f died and I no longer want to buy another expensive screen...instead, I'd rather buy a large but good one at Walmart. Many peoples only place to shop is also the cheapest options and I'd also be keenly interested in how the setups and menus work on these tvs... nobody does any menu diving (or none I've found) and I'd like (now need) to buy another tv... If you can do a video by tomorrow around noon I'd be impresssed but rationally imo every November would be watched every year by a ton of people...people who can't afford more than the base models.... please and thank you.
Yeah... Unless you've got a speciality AC-3 decoder. You ain't getting surround from laserdisc. Also most laserdiscs (unless specifically stated) don't contain a digital audio track, so getting a signal from a Toslink cable is very hit and miss. Laserdisc is an analogue format, the video and audio are analogue. So best to output over RCA. Unless you know a digital stereo or AC-3 signal is present.
can you please tell me how can i synce my sony a80j tv with my soundbar sony ct770 and sync the audio as the soundbar has a delayed audio response by 1 second
I dont think those Qinlianf do any line conditioning. That isn't mentioned anywhere on the product page and is generally much more expensive than the few dollars these go for. Even the surge protection would be questionable at that price.
That plug thing seems like a good idea at first, but it looks like weapons grade chinesium not to mention the octopus of cables you'd see at the wall and questionable power related features nope nope nope, I'll stick with my 1 cable at the wall into a quality surge protector with a ferrite bead on it, into a cable box that hides the rest of the cables
I have a similar problem with some old pieces of equipment (my Sony minidisc deck for one) where they just randomly turn themselves on. To work around the issue I installed inexpensive smart plugs on these so the power is literally cut when I'm not using the device. Perhaps this could be a solution for the individual experiencing the issue with the soundbar. It would be one extra step to turn it on, but wouldn't necessitate giving up all the CEC features.

100% Agree about improving the room for audio quality. Personally experienced it when I moved.

Where is Dolby Flex products? I don’t think I’ve ever seen one in a store online. Is Dolby flex still around?
