    Great reaction guys, as always. He's such a colorful storyteller. I was transitioning from flying Cobra attack helicopters to the Apache when this occurred. A forceful response can be a tough call. But the bottom line is the consequences for bad actors has to result in a price too high for them willing to pay. When the term "proportional is used" it suggests hitting back with similar or equal destruction. When in reality, it takes action that causes them to say, "Stop. We've had enough". - Hawk

    Your in the right track. Kuwait backed Iraq in the Iran Iraq war. After that war ends Iraq owes Kuwait a bunch of money and instead of paying them back uses the excuse of them drilling sideways into Iraq for oil as an excuse to attack them. And that leads to desert shield which is the US and a bunch of other countries protecting Saudi Arabia to keep gas prices from going bonkers. And shield turns into storm and Iraq's military gets used as target practice for a week and a half.

    29:39 Mark! 5.6K Thumbs Up + Mine! 👍 You're welcome, and thanks! 😊
    Notes: Heh. As timing would have it, while you were gone, I needed a new smartphone! Now I have one! 😊
    He said "injured" not "wounded"! As if people tripped or bumped their heads or whatever on their way to or from the explosion! 😮
    I remember the television news reports!
    Instead of commenting as I watched your video, I hoped to remember my mental notes until the end here, but I've forgotten them, I think. 🤷‍♂️

    The first Gulf War was the result of Iraq invading Kuwait. Probably because Iraq still owed Kuwait money and didn't wanna make any more payments.

    I love how the intro to this makes it seem like we destoyed 100 naval cruisers in a day, like it was Japan's WW2 navy...
    When in reality saying Iran had a navy in that era is like saying North Vietnam had a navy in the 1970s just because they had a bunch of sampam fishing boats with NVA soldiers on them.
    When "half" of your naval power is 2 modern cruisers and a couple of converted oil platforms, you really dont have a navy to begin with.
    Still its the whole notion of wtf was Iran thinking?? Like they werent going to get curb-stomped if they even damaged 1 USA ship.

    That Kuwait had been loaning Iraq large amounts of money also played a large part in the invasion of Kuwait in the 90's, as Iraq still owed them for the loans and Saddam figured. 'We won't have to pay Kuwait back if we annex them.'

    The boys er .. Sailors that cinched the Robert’s together with steel cables weren’t grizzled old Sailors! They were mostly under 30, with some in the 18-25 range. Granted the Senior Chief was older and experienced, probably not doing this but . . .

    With the 3 Americans that got killed, we have a base there because it's the only thing pushing back on Iran's access to the Mediterranean via Syria. It sits in between the route to move goods through the region. So it's not about trade there, per se, but about stopping Iran from causing even more problems elsewhere.

    The Harpoon almost got the USS Simpson (FFG-56). I got stationed on her after this and there were still people who participated in the battle on her. The log book from that day was cool. This battle is considered one of the top 5 most influential naval battles in history. There is even a book about it. It was the first time missiles were used in battle and it dictated American policy in the Middle East going forward. There is a youtube video shot from the bridge on the simpson for part of the battle. hard to watch due to radar playing hell on the camcorder though.,

    Fat Electrician is a good story teller.. now what happens after this tho.. Iraq doesnt want to pay back Kuwait, so instead Saddam has Iraq invade Kuwait which then the US and Coalition forces start Operation Desert Shield and then Desert Storm. and btw the Battle of 73 Easting happens.. and then years later there is when Wagner and some Syrians attack Conoco Fields (Feb 2018)

    It did lead into the Iraq/Kuwait war, after a fashion. Part of why Iraq invaded was to not have to pay back Kuwait the money they owed them from Kuwait funding Iraq during the Iraq/Iran war.

  • @SandyRiverBlue
    @SandyRiverBlue หลายเดือนก่อน

    It did result in the 1st Gulf War, indirectly. This battle resulted in the end of the Iraq-Iran war so they couldn't recoup their losses from Iran. Iraq then decided that it didn't want to pay back Kuwait but that backfired so they attacked it instead.

  • @wiccan75
    @wiccan75 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Kuat was backing Iraq in the war vs Iran, Iraq owed them a lot of money, rather than pay it, Iran invaded Kuat, and desert storm kicked off from that.

    Just my two cents. The Gulf War was partly in response to some of this. Iraq knew they couldn't repay Kuwait after the Iran Iraq War. Which is why they invaded Kuwait (maybe with a little nod from US). They planned to take over Northern Kuwait which is where all the oil rich fields are (since they were in debt). They kept going, that's when US got involved. Pushed them back, tried to have a Shia uprising to overthrow the Baath Party, Saddam took care of that. Fast forward 10+ years later. Round 2 Fight!
