  • Just one day has passed since the unboxing, this time we got a bit more knowledge about the instrument, effects, and so on!
    With a sprinkle of the free Valhalla reverb, that felt very necessary.
    Still can't color correct properly this synth: I can't find a way to reproduce this beautiful pink tone!
    Do you want to buy a Soma Lyra-8 like mine (yes, pink is also available)?

      About the Valhalla, I honestly don't remember much, and even then I mostly went by taste (that's also the convenience of adding FX in post, so you can take your time and not bake it in the recording!)

      I have a PiSound on the output, cheap hat for Raspberry Pi running MOD UI headless with hundreds of chainable software pedal FX. I also control the Lyra 8 with the CV and Gate outs on Deluge, sequencing pitch, delay and hold. And sometimes run the output of the Lyra 8 into the Deluge and can record with FX or even play it live once I’ve routed the live Lyra input to a OSC on a synth - sometimes nice to play the Lyra sounds as a live chromatic synth.

    • @Dexba
      @Dexba  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@watercolourmark That's really another level. I have a Deluge too, and I will definitely try some of that stuff out, when I have time to figure out this "deeper" part of my Deluge (I am still very noobish!)
      Raspy keeps coming out here and there in the synth world, it seems like I will have to buy one, then I'll come back with more questions 😄

      @@Dexba GL. The CV is easy, just 3.5" to 1/4" mono cable (hard to find cable, I just use 1/4" with 3.5" adapter). And just seq like a MIDI channel. One CV does pitching and one does delay mod. Gate is done in a drum kit, click on a pad and CV button together, then move lower gold knob to choose Gate 1-4. Gate is just on/off to control Lyra Hold, but you need to tweak Hold setting to about half way, but depends on fast/slow. The Lyra as OSC is little harder, but not much. Have Lyra output going to Deluge in. Set up new synth, shift+synth. Then press the Select knob to go into menu and choose R or L for OSC source, depends on cable. Then just trigger Lyra notes and play it or seq as normal. Hope this helps. Happy to help if you have questions?

    • @Dexba
      @Dexba  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, I reckon this could be a real deal breaker for many, even though I was coming from eurorack, so I didn’t feel it much.
      My opinion though is that the Lyra is predictable enough on the melodic parts to be recalled easily, and way too unpredictable on the noise side to be even useful recalling the exact preset.
      I mean… I don’t think we will ever need again the exact same BLIPLORGZWAABAB as before.
      But yes, it is definitely hard to place it in a live setup alongside other more traditional instruments

  • @djzhor457
    @djzhor457 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Nice performance. Did you connect the Lyra to ableton as an external instrument and then put the plug-in on the chain? I’m pretty new to this all. Ordering a Lyra as my first electronic instrument. And thinking of what I can do with it later

    • @Dexba
      @Dexba  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thank you a lot! Actually, I just added the reverb in post.
      The thing is the Lyra is already quite "reverberating", with its long decays not always the same or synchronized, so the reverb is just like the cherry on top!
      God, I wish they put some primitive, limited reverb onboard already

  • @isis42michel

    great video and sound , great color im interested of getting one is it worth it for the zen part of it, or does it get
    in chaotic tendency more often????

    • @Dexba
      @Dexba  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I bought it for the zen part, and it definitely met my expectations.
      Even taking your time to tune the oscillators one by one, by feeling, matching harmonics, is worth a recording, if you add some FX to it.
      The chaotic part comes when you dive into modulations. From there it goes VERY chaotic, almost impossible to control, and that's something I am not very fond of, especially because it retains its powerful and sometimes harsh sound, but in an uncontrolled way.
      So go for it, stay on track with the "vanilla" part of the experience, but don't expect to control the chaotic part!

    Hey, really like the sound you're getting from this thing. Besides the reverb are you doing any further processing to get it to sound this way?

    • @Dexba

    • @Dexba
      @Dexba  4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Honestly? Probably not. The sound palette, the usable one at least, is very limited. All you hear online is already almost the maximum potential of this instrument and €700 is arguably expensive, cheaper only than an eurorack counterpart.
      All in all, every time I see my Pink Lyra I smile and I love to touch and feel it, so it was definitely worth the price

    • @ericsynthplanet7092
      @ericsynthplanet7092 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Dexba Thanks for your candid response, I only ask because I am thinking of purchasing one but only worry if I might have second thoughts after having had it for a while. Your use of it here and others I have heard is very compelling... I like the unpredictability as well as the drone capabilities, and at times it has a very full lush sound, the lack of the keyboard is also a plus, I would think it takes you in a different direction all in all.

    • @Dexba
      @Dexba  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@ericsynthplanet7092 yes, the idea is exactly taking you in other directions! I have many "classic" synthesizers and I just wanted to indulge in one, irrational/passional expense, ending up buying the Lyra.
      Apart from that, the oscillators sound incredible: I would LOVE to see some other manufacturer put these inside their synth. They sound so fat, so big, so musical!
      But, if you don't have many other instruments and maybe you are a bit worried about how long you will like the Lyra, I suggest you to go for a Hydrasynth Desktop: the aftertouch-capable pads are a dream and there is so much going on the instrument that you will probably not have enough of it!

    • @watercolourmark
      @watercolourmark 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I brought mine used for a bargain, I think many sell them on quickly because they realise all those cool online sounds is the sum of it - so they make a bunch of samples and sell it on. And if you get a used one for a bargain then you can sell it on and actually cover cost or make a little in the process. I don’t regret as I use it as atmos on most tracks now. It just jamming out on it for fun is almost like meditation. I also play the Lyra sounds live chromatically using a Deluge - as you can use the input as a live oscillator on a synth. So I can tune two notes on Lyra to C, have one triggered with a coin and bring the second in warping the first while playing or sequencing that sound within the Deluge - which is unlike anything I can do otherwise. And nice to run a drum track into the Lyra too, worth it just for using that drive and delay on drums. If you are after this kind of drone sound and what something more diverse look at The Pipe, only monophonic but much bigger range of sound and extremely playable - and can be used as FX also. They also go together so nicely.

      Dexba - the osicillator is actual just a standard HEF4093 digital chip. Cheap and widely used, 3 euro for 10, used in Atari Punk Synth. But something about the way SOMA uses these and routes them makes them special. And full schematic online to build your own Lyra 4/8. I noticed this when I watched a guy on TH-cam make a very easy synth out of one of those chips and it reminded me of a Lyra, then I googled and found SOMA stating this was the oscillator. But Google “HEF4093 breadboard” and you will be surprised with the images using so little to make a synth sound - you could buy a few parts for 20 euro and follow a video to make a basic synth with these in a few hours. Hi, this might be a really stupid question but how do you know the key? Great jam btw, thanks

    • @Dexba
      @Dexba  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Thank you a lot!
      Actually, I have no idea about the key.
      I usually start tuning all the oscillators on the same note, then I proceed to change them one by one creating a scale to my taste and feeling, then I start to play and make final adjustments before I hit record :)
      I tried to tune it using a tuner or to stick with different scales, but the organic feeling of the Lyra makes it hard to me to just pick and tune following standards.
      Some oscillators have sweet spots on certain notes, and the way they interfere harmonically is also another fact to be taken care of
