  • Easy DIY Fix for Canon EOS Camera Not Turning On
In this short how-to video we show how to fix a Canon EOS camera that will not turn on. These cameras seem to lock up if the power is left on by mistake for extended periods. When the battery runs dead the camera locks down and can be quite difficult to get started again. Video gives two ways to try to resolve the issue.

Sir, You are an absolute genius. My EOS 750D had ben locked for a while. I watched your video, recharged the batteries, dismounted the lens, left for 36 hours, inserted a new Scandisk 64gb card and its works perfectly. Thank-you so much.

This worked! My daughter has a Canon PowerShot SX740 HS that was packed away during a move. I charged her battery, pressed the on button and no response. Took out the battery and the memory card, recharged the battery, put it all back in and voila! The camera works! Thanks so much for saving me a trip to Canon and a repair bill!

Oh my god you just saved my life. Haven’t used my camera in a while, need it this weekend (starting in a couple hours) to photograph at a few days long event and it wasn’t turning on even though the battery was full. Removed everything, waited an hour and a half and hoped for the best (I would really be fucked if it didn’t turn on), and it WORKED! Thank you so much

Thanks a lot! I only had to remove the lens and the camera was able to turn on instantly.
I had it in a freezing weather yesterday which might have discharged the battery completely and I mounted another lens. Even after I charged the battery at home and inserted it, LED should blink, but it didn't. Thanks a lot for sharing your tips!

This was SO HELPFUL!!! Admittedly I did not follow your instructions exactly. I have a Rebel T1i, and it would drain the battery so fast, so I thought the battery was the issue and had bought new batteries. When I used new charged batteries it still behaved the same way. The reason your video is helpful is that I never would have thought to check out what is going on with the card! I did not buy a new card but just put in another one and that totally fixed my problem! Thank you for this video which helped me in a roundabout way by highlighting that the card could be the issue. How lucky that yours was the first video I clicked on and it helped! I had prayed for God's help this morning and He always helps! God is good! May God bless you!

My EOS 550D was suffering these symptoms - after not much success with plan A (it turned on after having the battery out for over 24hrs but wouldn't let me take a photo or respond when I changed modes), I then went for the recharge/dismount/new memory card option... after leaving for 36 hours+ just tried it and despite being sceptical it now seems to be back in perfect working order! Thank you!!! I have a 250d from 2019. I faced the issue a few months after buying it, I dont' know how I fixed it then.
Last week I left my camera on for days and battery was drained and this stuupid issue came back!!
I was losing my mind, finally removing battery and sd card and leaving the trap open for 2 hours almost fixed it.
I had to to the following steps :
-put battery only back (still not turning on)
-removing lens, yes camera is on
-putting lens back and yes still turning on
-putting sd back, and yes again still turning on and working good.

Thx so much for this Video, though my eos 1300d kept dying after I started it once and I had to leave it without battery and sd card again for some hours to make it fire up.

I recntly bought a used Canon EOS Rebel Ti5 on my local FB selling group; it was only $200 because it was missing the battery and the original lense, only the telescope lens or whatever it's called. I was able to get a battery and I have a memory card but I can't get it to turn on.
I'm pretty sure the battery is the correct one, it's called a Promaster and says that it replaces the Canon LP-E8. This is my first camera, I want to use it to document the process of renovating my RV but I have no idea what to do to get the camera working.
Did I get ripped off, or do you think there is hope to get the camera working?
What's really frustrating is that I live on an Island in Alaska and I can't find a single place on Amazon that will ship a battery up here :(

  • @yinyangedits5846

A CHEAPER SOLUTION FOR THE SD CARD: if you have a card reader, put it into your computer and go into "This PC" or "My PC" then the card should have a file with a coloured line next to it, right click and format the card (make sure you have saved all memory on it externally first) this reverts the card back to factory settings and the camera should work perfectly fine, you don't have to buy a new one unless this doesn't work.

Is it similar to blinking battery problem? My canon 60d was left with battery which went to 0 and it bricked it somehow. Now when I put on battery there is only empty blinking battery icon and camera wont turn on. I tried with 4 different batteries (one original), three different cards (but not completely new ones). From internet research I found my problem may be harder to solve and have something to do with the motherboard which need to be replaced but I don't know what to think looking at your magical ways haha

TIP: Charge battery and try swapping SD Cards first.
😃Yessss!! It worked and only took about 30 minutes. I also included commenter Daniel Tokaryev's tip to blow, I used a blow bulb, possible dust off terminals. I was fretting needing to repair or replace an only 3yo EOS Rebel T7. Thanks!!!
BTW this kind of thing must be known to Canon engineers and should be in the Troubleshooting section of the man ... oh wait. There is no troubleshooting section in the manual 😠
UPDATE: A day later the problem returned. A little research suggested using a toothpick to gently move the battery/SD Card door switch to possibly unstick it. 🤞the camera seems to be working fine.
UPDATE #2: After additional experimentation it turns out a 128GB SD card creates the problem. Just swapping out that card with several other cards allows the camera to power up like normal.

Battery won’t come out. After I charged and replaced. Is it possible to put the battery in wrong orientation.

Let me know how it works out. Other option is to buy a new battery and card. If you do just never use the old ones

Let me try this on my 1ds mark III. I sent it to a Canon repair facility and they said I need a new motherboard 2000 real. I'll repost it this fix works.

Going try this . I tired buying a new disk and seeing it turn on it didn’t so now took everything off and just going let it sit for a few days to see if turned back on 🙏🏾

I know it's a different model, but I got my EOS M to power on by holding the "on" and green "playback" icon button simultaneously. My EOS M had been sitting without the battery for 4 years and wouldn't turn on even with new batteries (though the lens would move a bit when I would close the battery door). I tried re-seating the sd card, re-seating the lens and checking the battery door switches/battery contacts to no avail. I figured I'd mention it in the event it works for other cannon models. I got mine working this afternoon, got excited, and have been trying to find people with Canon cameras having similar issues haha. Hopefully it works for you. ✌🏿

You should use the body cap and treat lens cap (or at least a plastic bag) to keep dust out of the camera. I also think you could try charging the battery a couple of times. I'm guessing the problem is all battery and not memory card.

I like the collaborative mindset, let's keep it going! I literally couldn't have made a better suggestion for the body and lens cap. I like the idea of trying to charge the battery a couple times (I believe you suggested this as a method of checking for a faulty battery, nice) but I would not be quick to dismiss the memory card. While I cannot give a technical explanation, I could see how an uninitialized sd card would cause a "break" in a cycle. Fathom this as a thought experiment. If the camera was left on for a couple days (like the example stated in the video) and was in the middle of a process when the battery finally died. I could see the camera having some sort of issue "booting" if it had failed to "shut down" properly. I'm a pc hobbyist so my terminology can likely be changed to something more agreeable.

Caps are 5 dollars at best buy / online retailers (for both caps). Actual camera stores might give them to you free as advertising.

My new R7 had a similar issue. I kept it aside for one and a half days. It then displayed error 40. Then it worked. So I suggest that everyone should keep it aside for 2 days before sending for service.
