    To people that says this is illegal, they argue that the pivot foot was lifted when coach went for the layup. However, after some research, it turns out that the pivot foot can leave the ground, as long as the shot/pass was attempted before it touches the ground again

      In high school basketball they have changed the rule so you can’t lift the pivot foot, but in college and pro it’s clean

    Looked clean to me cuz the pivot foot stayed in contact with the floor and the only step you took was to setup the shot which technically doesn't count as a step so that's a clean post move into a layup

    Ref 101: 1st foot down, after dribble ends, is pivot foot. 2nd foot can move about, & if pivot foot's lifted, pivot can NOT retouch floor. = LEGAL!

In the third step if you are going to do a lay-up it's ok to lift it cause you are in a dynamic situation; but once you stopped and have done a fake you are not in a dynamic situation anymore and the moment you lift your pivot travel should be called. Yet again, this specific movement is never called because looks could and feels dynamic, but reading the book might still be considered a travel

      Nowhere in this does it say you have to be in a dynamic situation

The moment you lift your pivot while the other foot is still on the floor, the other foot will automatically become your foot, and it will be touching the floor and you will have commited travel, otherwise travel when starting dribbleing wouldn't make sense

      If you couldn't lift your pivot foot while keeping your other foot on the ground, it would be worded closer to this.
      "You may only lift your pivot foot if you jump off both feet at the same time" which is what you're saying. But it doesn't because that's not the rule.

      b. If the player wishes to dribble after a pivot, the ball must be out of his hand before
      the pivot foot is raised off the floor. If the player raises his pivot off the floor, he must pass or
      attempt a field goal before the foot is returned to the floor.
      If he fails to follow these guidelines, he has committed a traveling violation.
      RULE NO. 10: Violations and Penalties
      Section XIII-Traveling
      d. If a player, with the ball in his possession, raises his pivot foot off the floor, he must pass or shoot before his pivot foot returns to the floor. If he drops the ball while in the air, he may not be the first to touch the ball.

    So only 2 steps all together...and never left his pivet foot.

    It is a travel. The pivot foot thing is not the issue - the issue is that he took 3 steps. He took 2 steps prior to the turn, then another step after it.

    But i think as long as one of his legs is on the ground he can move like that and it doesn't count as a step

      your pivot foot can leave the ground, only if your attempting a shot or a pass, so this was legal. If he had landed without doing either of those thing it would have been a travel

    Technically legal but cuz of the zoom in u see his pivot foot move slightly therefore technically making it a travel but it’s basically just a step through so legal most of the time without the sliding of the pivot foot in the beginning
