    Every time I hear Kathryn I can’t help of thinking of her grandad, my great uncle Joe. Loved visited visiting him and aunt Madeleine on their farm, not far from Wark. Think of a softly spoken Jack Hargreaves smoking roll ups! Brilliant memories. Uncle Joe loved music and would be so proud. And rightly so.

    Beautiful. The Northumbrian Pipes are so much mellower that the Scottish bagpipes. Kathryn is a seriously brilliant musician. Thanks to her and The Darkening for bringing me some joy in a moment of national crisis. (All in Britain know what that is so I don’t need to spell it out!) About to order their latest album, Hollowbone, after hearing Kathryn on Radio 4 this morning. 👍

      If you enjoyed this you might be better off with the previous album ‘Kathryn Tickell & The Side’ before you try Hollowbone. It’s more similar to this (in fact this tune is on the Side album!)

    Imagine a world in which this sort of talent was properly celebrated. Instead we get this world.

    • @sbearly
      @sbearly 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Gennady Golovkin So you don't like the world because of what Simon Cowell does on a show you don't have to watch? Get out and find some live music you like. It might change your life and your opinion of this absolutely wonderful world God created for us.

    • @sbearly
      @sbearly 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Gennady Golovkin At what point did I say you said you hated the world?

    • @sbearly
      @sbearly 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Gennady Golovkin Just to imagine a world where we find and enjoy music without being upset at what music others create or listen to. Didn't mean to start a quarrel. We wouldn't be here if we didn't like at least some of the same music.

    • @sbearly
      @sbearly 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Gennady Golovkin Music isn't like some building that needs to be built according to agreed upon standards for the sake of safety or the "integrity of architecture." Music is art. Part of the fun is to expand boundaries. I'm sure you don't think we should go back to banging on drums and chanting. There are millions of people making music and billions listening to the music that moves them. Why pick a genre or an artist and say, "not valid"? We should enjoy what we enjoy and be happy that other people find music they can enjoy without thinking they are retards or subversives. I don't want to decide what music is "good for" someone. Only they know what they like or what is "good for" them. What is the point of living in a free country if we start making rules about what music is good for or not good for individuals? Would we do that for speech? Or thought?

    • @RedfishInc
      @RedfishInc 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      This world is doing fine, if you can't see that then perhaps the problem is in your brain. I can appreciate this music and ZZ Top and Hank William's, all are worthy of celebration, all represent different cultures and times. Stop cursing the night and light a candle.

    I have thousands of CDs. I've always been a bit fussy about them being in pristine condition. I sometimes didn't buy one because the booklet was slightly scuffed or creased.
    Kathryn Tickell is the only musician I've ever asked to sign a CD, with a big marker pen across the pristine booklet. I even bought a couple I already had, so she could sign them too.
    I lived in Newcastle for a while when I was young, and visited many places in Northumberland. I love all kinds of pipes, but the Northumbrian smallpipes are my favourites. And no one plays them as beautifully as this lady.

    A long time ago Kathryn played my local arts centre. She had the 3 piece band including Lyn Tucker on piano accordion. Anyway, she invited people who wanted to ask questions etc to wait at the side door of the stage. As I was a keen photographer at the time I went and waited and was the only person outside the door. After a few minutes Kathryn came out and I was so nervous and awestruck that I just mumbled some words about enjoying the concert and could I take a photo to which she said yes. After that there was a very awkward silence and she nodded at me suggesting we ought to go - which we both did! If I get time I am going to look through all my neg strips to see if I can find that shot! Anyway she was very humble and dealt with the whole situation with dignity!

    • @tullochgorum6323
      @tullochgorum6323 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not really - the Northumbrian pipe is unique. On all other pipes, the chanter plays continuously and you put your fingers down to sound a note. On the Northumbrian pipe the end of the chanter is stopped, and you lift your fingers to sound a note. So the chanter is silent when all the fingers are down. This accounts for the unique, staccato sound of the Northumbrian pipes.

I have a question - was it your good self that accompanied Jimmy Nail (along with a guitarist) in June 2000 at the Royal Opera House, at a charity concert in aid of the Buddhist Peace Garden ? I really loved that ballad, with Jimmy's gravelly voice and the sound of the Northumbrian Pipes and Guitar - just wonderful ! The entire day was a dream for me, mixing with all those celebrities too (I was Lulu's piper, that played 'Amazing Grace' at the concert - just sorry that we didn't meet at the time.)
