After 48 years I recently started drawing again, first with graphite pencils and to my surprise I did not do so bad, now after viewing a couple of lesson summaries, by Mr Colin Bradley, I am doing my first ever painting with pastel pencils! Thank You Mr. Bradley.

Firstly, I thoroughly enjoy and appreciate all of your videos. I am wondering if you know whether the color shapers will work with Pan Pastels?

wicked!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i have been using the standard chalk pastels for years, and cloud wise, i have never seemed to get the definition i have always wanted for clouds, sometimes its nice there is just a hint of cloud, but when wanting full blown cloud action, eeek, i now can do clouds :D thanks loads, because it is frustrating when doing a pastel painting and its good, but one element lets it down :( and now yey :D

@1584ninz every medium requires different techniques. these tips are very useful for the use of pastel pencils specifically. painting is different because it often requires the balancing of water or another fluid along with the paint. there are also various brushes to use for different techniques, and different methods for laying on color.

Is there any advantage to using a softer pastel pencil like Conte, for larger area fills and then using the Fabers for really tight details towards the end?

  • @concitascarpato1616

Soft pastels are pigment with minimum binder, the less binder = the more soft the pastel is (or crumbly). Hard pastels (like conte, nupastel) use more binder and the benefit to that is they are less expensive and can produce sharper lines however they can't blend as well as soft pastels.
Chalks are another medium (I think) in that they use pigment + calcium carbonate or chalk. That dulls the crystaline structure of pigment. That's the difference between craft supplies and art materials.

    Colin:
Do you ever use stick pastels for larger sky or water areas in order to conserve the value and longevity your Faber-Castel pencils? I feel they have a very limited life due to the diminutive amount of pigment? Some of us out here in art land just can't justify the use of an expensive pencil, and use sticks to cover more ground or sky if you may...Ha Ha
True! You do excellent work with them no matter how large or small the piece you are working on, but you can cover more ground with the side of a pastel stick, and blend it in just as you would your Faber-Castel's...I'm a bit confused. Help!

Your support should be vertical so that the dust falls down and you should never blow on the pastel painting to avoid breathing in toxic pastel dust.

I Use a tiny vacuum to pick up,the, dust. Pastels are made from minerals found. In the earth. Not toxic but using them over, many many years might be a physical challenge. Tiny vacuums sold on eBay , get a battery-op one.
