Anyone else prefer the UK version of KN? The US version is so obviously scripted and formulaic. The UK restaurants had different problems he had to solve, like poor marketing, portion size and pricing, too much bought-in over seasonal ingredients, rats in the fridge. And Gordon had more of a warmth to him, only yelling when he needed to break down someone's ego. It was far more interesting to watch.

@@adamhayche8412 I think he meant solo leveling isn't the prime example. The biggest issue I have with solo leveling is the fact nobody else can get powerful, around like 160 I think in the manhwa he's already way more powerful than the 2nd most powerful human so you know nobody else can truly help him later except his summons. If other people's mana or something could be increased through training their stamina it would help at least make it feel like he's not completely alone now. You get to see him fight and train tons of times, and early on the stakes are still high because he is so weak that he is constantly against the wall. All of Kirito's strength is earned off screen, even his biggest plot device of Duel Wielding is just pulled out of nowhere with no hints that he did anything to deserve that strength. It would be like if we watched everyone struggle on Namek, and then Goku showed up and was already Super Saiyan and just killed Frieza immediately.

I guess it really comes down to origin stories vs implied origin stories. Kirito had been a serious gamer his whole life before entering SAO, so its just implied that he is "that guy" when he enters into the story, because the story is actually about the technological world they are in and how gaming is interacting with AI and human consciousness and neurology. I agree with you in some sense that it would have been better if they had showed him leveling up in SAO (or even flashbacks or arcs showing how he got into gaming), but if you can just imagine it would be the same as happened in solo leveling, we really aren't missing much.
OH, and no, duel wielding is given to the player in SAO with the fastest reaction time (Kirito mentioned it when fighting Yuuki). So I guess he didn't deserve it, but that's kind of like how Sung didn't "deserve" being chosen by the shadow monarch. The are the MC's in power fantasies so they get better stuff than other characters, like all power fantasy stories.

If you like Solo Leveling, I HIGHLY recommend Omniscient Reader’s Viewpoint. Both SL and ORV are made by Redice Studio, but have both different yet similar plot points. It’s satisfying to see your protagonist grow through hard work and their own efforts, that brings not always 100% perfect outcomes.

ORV has a great mc, great supporting characters, great mystery, plot, art, worldbuilding, etc. Solo Leveling has great art, great uhh... great... umm meh "emotionless mc", side "characters" (could honestly take most of them out and still would be the same story), there's no tension.. i just dont get how its *still* popular, at first it *was* amazing, now its so so fucking mid. • @StrikeNoir105E

Note that as with all things, the long scroll format's effectiveness is based on the artists working on it, as sometimes manhwa can have entire long pages filled with nothing but white, whereas manga try to make sure that every page has something in it.

Honestly, I unironically think that one of the big things that helps Solo Leveling feel different from normal power fantasy isekai manga is that there isn't a stupid harem, and the mc is actually cool. A lot of power fantasy isekai manga have bland lame MCs that are supposed to look like normal nerds, and then they get a big harem of fanservicey annoying girls following them around, with lots of time given to MC just interacting with the girls. Solo Leveling doesn't do that. The MC is super cool looking, and acts like it. He isn't a meek submissive nerd who just happens to be strong, he's a cool powerful guy who knows it and acts like it. There isn't a lame harem taking up time that could be spent on more rule of cool awesomeness.
On another note, Solo Leveling has in turn done to the Korean manhwa scene what SAO (or debatably Mushoku Tensei, or debatably both) did to the manga scene. There's lots of manhwa somewhat like Solo Leveling, some actually good, taking the premise and adding unique twists and interesting concepts and characters, and others.... just being Solo Leveling ripoffs that aren't as cool as it. Also, there's lots of other awesome Manhwa that deserve more recognition, Solo Leveling derived and otherwise.

For me, the reason Solo Leveling was so special (considering all the genres it combines), is the fact that the hero genuinely feels human at the beginning. He gets anxious, he worries about his family, he sucks at understanding social queues and other things even tho he can keep increasing his intelligence levels. He just felt like he could actually be your friend and you would love him for that. What happens with other content (being isekai(sh) or just shounen), is that it seems as though the hero has infinite potential and has a set goal. Luffy wants to be the king of pirates and keeps growing because he has a set goal and a heart of gold, regardless of what happens, same with Gon, Deku, or whomever else. Jin Woo also feels consistent as a character. He doesn’t want the world destroyed because the people he loves live in it, and he feels genuine empathy and care for others, regardless of his strength. He legitimately feels like a person, and he feels like a person who’s path you want to follow along because you’re seeing them grow, but also remain human (setting apart his abilities, of course).

@@Fallen_Core He doesn't know how to make friends? Am I misremembering, i feel like every subordinate he gets for the most part easily becomes his subordinate... ie: the young rich D-rank hunter, the girl hunter who smells stuff, and even the demon girl.
In the latest episode of the show, it literally shows that just his becoming stronger (and, you could argue, this newfound fearlessness; but I would include this in his getting stronger) substantially improves the relationship he has with his little sister. To the point that it goes from a relationship where she scolds him and is always worried for her-- to the older brother who looks out for his younger sister in a sort of nanny-ish way. (I like this development but i'm just pointing out that this change he has with his family isn't a "struggle".
I think saying strength is only useful for lifting heavy stuff is incredibly disingenuous, even in the latest episode the girl who likes sung jinwoo is literally shown having a moment where she is in awe noticing a seemingly new appeal to sung. This appeal being his newly found incredible strength.
What social etiquette does sung have to learn???
He is not like any regular human, that is totally proven to be the case when the architect shows how sung was the greatest candidate to become the vessel of the S. M. (I'm assuming you know what that means)
I'd agree about him having to study, but it's kind of irrelevant when you take into account that it is happening in a side story after the series has already come to an end. It's something cool for the reader, but I don't think it's fair to say that this "need to study" is somehow an integral piece to sung jin woos character development such that it is one of his imperfections.

"I don't know what kind of black magic the webcomic industry has cast to allow us to enjoy full colour weekly chapters."
Solo Levelling is made by an entire studio of artists, not just a single artist like most mangas are. Since webcomics are so popular in Korea, it's actually pretty common for them to be made by studios, usually based on a webnovel that was written by a single author. You can think of webnovels being like the manga and the webcomic being the anime of the story.

You know manga aren't made by a single person as well, right? At least after they reach a certain lvl, they get assistants to do certain works, like do the shadows or the setting for the place, the mangaka does the story and the main artwork but the details are often done or at least helped by the assistants, also because they not only have to do it in 1 week or 2 weeks, but also because they make several drafts. At least according to what I know.

Because like Gigguk explained, the medium itself is catered to smartphone's scroll down viewing. So besides the huge manpower (studio) compared to your usual manga one, the focus on paneling is divert to more intricate art style and coloring.

Not all. Solo Leveling is a pretty standout example in overall quality.
While the main characters representations are almost always great the unnamed background characters can be incredibly featureless or rough to the point they stand out like sore thumbs rather than blend in.
The backgrounds themselves can be literally copy pasted from a shared asset pool. I have seen the exact same 3d castle/mansion model across at least 10 or so separate titles.
Generally these are the dime a dozen "shoujo" romance stories but while manga usually doesn't have recognizable copied assets between one another the level of quality and detail for them are largely similar if you look past the most marketed and popular titles from either.

Also, weekly mangas are not being drawn by a single person either, they usually have at least 2 to 5 assistants.
Usually main author focus on the characters, the dialogues/story and the overall layout (with a rough of the backgrounds), and then assistants do the inking, the greys, the backgrounds and details.
It's the same thing with webtoons btw, there is still a main author even for Solo Leveling doing basicaly the same things as said above (that's why you can get no chapter if he is sick) and they still get overworked like hell too, but the team behind him is bigger and quite literally a company business (while mangas is more "homemade", the author is the one hiring his staff and giving them a workplace).

OK I've just read Solo Leveling from start to finish.
IMO what stands it apart (aside from beautiful art) is that the character makes logical choices.
Power Fantasies often go to extremes:
    1. The MC makes the right choice but that makes absolutely no sense when compared to the available information. It's like he was given the script and decided to read what comes next.
    2. The MC is unbelievable stupid. He makes the wrong choice just to add drama or create an avoidable conflict.
And just like in Mushoku Tensei we see Rudeus test how much mana he can use, whether chanting is needed to use magic, etc; we see Sung Jin Woo try the limits of his powers. How far he can use his shadows, how his abilities and that of the special bosses compare to official rankings.
He waits until it's safe for him to find out what penalties for certain items are.
If we compare it to Kirito instead, he just activates dual sword and immediately knows how to use it and what to do; even though it's his first time. What if there had been a penalty? What if there was an input lag? a combo limit?
In Solo Leveling, we learn about the world alongside SJW. And we learn about what SJW can do at the same time as he does.
And unlike many stories, there's a sense of progression around an overarching story about an looming threat that slowly crawls into the main center of the stage.

Bro... Kirito had dual swords for 6 months before he showed them off to anyone. Also, the writing in SL is mid at BEST, and if your taste puts that at the top, I believe you just need to grow up a bit more and mature and you will enjoy thing behind the monke bain battle, battle, battle, battle, battle, battle on repeat with no substance, character development outside of the MC getting more emotionless (which is a convenient lazy writing tool the author used so he would have to do absolutely 0 character development after the halfway mark).
Also, please never compare this mid garbage to a masterpiece like Mushoku Tensei. You will never get even 1% as emotional reading SL as you would in MT, in fact I know more about the MT world than the fucking SL world and its setting is Fing EARTH!

It takes the classical tropes in these isekai’s and twists them into something amazing. The beginning is sort of slow, but the pace quickens later in the novel. the funny thing is that solo levelling fits into this category even more niche than isekai; the 'gate' genre. there exist dozens upon dozens of manwha entailing 'portals open up and monsters come out spelling the start of the apocalypse. some people gain powers, and main character has some opportunity to get stronger way faster than those around him (like some op skills, or by being stuck in limbo for 1000s of years or something)'.
I've read quite a few of these myself like limit breaker, advanced player of the tutorial tower, omniscient reader's viewpoint, sss class suicide hunter, along with many that I am glad i've forgotten. the success of some of these 'gate' manwhas has led to a lot of cookie cutter copycats, thinking that decent art + generic op levelling fantasy will rake in endless sums of money.
the ones that stick out, and more importantly, stick *around*, are the ones with dynamic characters, ones you hate, ones you love or empathize with, intricate world-building, plot progression that makes sense, well-choreographed fights, ones that make your heart go doki-doki.
of the manwha i've listed, limit breaker is one where the end result is quite poor. artwork far superior to the average manwha artist, but writing on the level of a high schooler (although, the writer of the martial peak WN was in high school when he began writing that so maybe not even that level), terrible power scaling, nonsensical dialogue, incredibly contrived drama. that's what makes a manwha sink to the bottom of the metaphorical barrel

He's a good person with a charming and witty personality that's practically the perfect foil to the antagonist we get introduced to very early on. The time travel/future knowledge to fix the apocalypse genre that's everywhere in the manhwa scene is mixed with MC fixing the antagonist's mistakes and it becomes so satisfying to watch an arrogant prick gets justice served before he gains any power.

    1. The story is about him understanding and coming to terms with his powers and place in the world. It's not about if he can beat the next boss with how awesome he is.
    2. We are explicitly told he is special and OP - they aren't pretending like there is dramatic tension in the fights, just good build up (Hellsing Ultimate is a good parallel).
    3. The fights are mental games with existing information (like JoJo), and not full of ass-pulls or power of friendship.
    4. While he gets some girls, there is no shitty excuse for a harem to follow him around, and the female characters aren't treated like crap.

And they continuously upped the stakes in a realistic/believable way that maintained the immersion. Each episode rarely left you feeling like it was a filler and yet didn't feel like too much was happening constantly, and although each chapter/arc was similar, they managed to be creative as to how he used his massive powers.

I'd like to recommend a manhwa called Omniscient Reader's Viewpoint, which is based on a novel which my sister read the entirety of and gushed to me about. It's about a man named Kim Dokja who one day finds himself living through the events of a webnovel he read, wherein monsters start attacking and people become capable of gaining skills. The protagonist of the webnovel is a man named Yoo Jonghyuk who returns to the start of the scenario every time he dies. Kim Dokja has to survive both the scenarios and Yoo Jonghyuk. It's a lot more complicated and interesting than what I just described, and it has my favorite trope in it which is found family. The manhwa has great art to go along with the (very good in my opinion) story, so I definitely recommend it

Thanks for the recommendation for ORV. I binged it in a day and a half. I had read Solo Leveling before but stopped (I think because I ran out of chapters to read) and feel no compunction whatsoever to go back to read it again. ORV (up to free reading chapter on Webtoons) is fun. Though it does feel a bit meandering because I'm not sure if Dokja has a firm idea for how this whole thing should end and is working toward it, or if the author is keeping the end goal vague so that random side stuff can be added in that ultimately do nothing for that goal other than be a point to grind through for Dokja.

These “Dungeon/Level-Up” manhwas, from what I’ve noticed on my reads, are the equivalent to isekais.
A lot of these manhwas follow the same formula, sometimes even getting OP so quickly. Like Solo-Max Level Newbie, where the streamer is a protaganist, but can do flips, and one punch other players.
But if you’re interested in these type of series, that aren’t as blatant with some tropes while still maintaining the badass protagonist I’ll recommend these series.
    - Overgeared (Grid takes more time to become overpowered but the cast still have their chance to shine and Grid is just a fun character to watch.
    - SSS Revival Hunter (or SSS Suicide Hunter depending on translations)
    - The Beginning After the End (technically American webcomic, but still a great read with a more balanced ensemble cast)
    - Omniscient Reader’s Viewpoint feels like a response to all the genres problem. The supposed OP “protagonist” is a side character that the main character, Kim Dokja is a fan of. Unlike most of its competitors, the main character has to use his party members abilities to the fullest and focuses more on character exploration.
Edit: I’ve read 8th Class Mage, Eat what I level up, and Tomb Raider King, but they’re just the same for me with different gimmicks. Like everyone besides the main character is useless or just insanely smart that everyone is behind. If you take away the decent art, theyd just be passable power fantasies. That’s my hot take.

The worst part about the Dungeon/Level-up manhwas is they are even more formulaic than isekai anime.
There is not a single unique, good, or even interesting one out there. They all have an edgy MC, an ill mum, a younger sister and an absent dad. 70% of them end up as necromancers and all of them end up waaayy more OP compared to the rest of the world.
