    I was a Farrier for 30 years [oh my aching back] shod mostly TN Walker Plantation and Walkers that were trail rode also. I retired 5 years ago just finished up a two day seminar just to see what was new. Believe me things have changed for sure. And I can tell you the Farriers of today properly trained thru a Farrier School know what they are doing. And yes some of the best today are Ladies. They have that magical touch.

    The summer of 1969 I studied the physiology of the horse from the shoulders down under DH Canfield at the University of Tennessee. We made our shoes in the forge. I came home to Louisiana, finished College and went back to the farm and 14 horses to trim and shoe. A lot has changed, but the basics remain the same. Great video. I learn some new tricks. Stay healthy. I'm still on the farm, but the horse's feet are trimmed by a much younger man.

    I grew up on a big horse and wheat ranch. At one time we had more than 30 horses, so on the days when the vet or the farrier was scheduled, it was a big deal. We had several farriers over the years, but one stands out in my memory, probably because he was the longest-running one. I don’t remember if my parents asked me to do it or if I requested the task, but I used to hold the horses while they were trimmed and shod. It was a lot of work for the farrier. He didn’t use a stand of any kind, but held the horse’s foot between his legs. He had a small forge and anvil. Some of the horses were calm and cooperative, some danced through the entire process despite my efforts to keep them still. Occasionally the farrier, whose name was Mike, would get angry and frustrated enough to hit a horse on the flank who was causing trouble. As a teenage girl, this was offensive to me so I never really warmed to him or spoke to him much. He was diffident and I was shy so that suited us both. I loved watching the process of cleaning, smoothing and leveling the hooves and fitting them with shoes. I would get stressed if I saw that a hoof wasn’t ready for the shoe but Mike was on to fitting it. He always caught the error before he actually fitted the shoe, so eventually I learned to trust him. It was immensely satisfying to end the day with the horses-and one donkey!-trimmed and shod and comfortable. The donkey was trimmed only, no shoes. The image foremost in my mind when I think of these long gone days is the sweat running in little rivulets through Mike’s close-cropped hair and dripping off his nose. He was a very hard worker.

    Correct me if I'm wrong and I apologise if I am way off base here but .... Wtf were the owners doing the entire time while the horses hooves declined. I understand she had an abscess which (because of the state of her hooves in this video leaves me feeling suspicious) forced them to leave the hoof alone while it healed. That being said, even her other hooves are chipped and overgrown. She is a beautiful horse and deserves to be cared for. It's rewarding work to clean and care for a 🐎 horse. Barring some uncontrolled unforseen trauma it is not difficult to maintain well manicured hooves and a healthy coat.
    Like I said correct me (with an explanation) if I'm wrong but my experience caring for horses leaves me praying she receives better care in the future, possibly with new owners if they cannot/ will not provide the appropriate love and care for this beautiful animal.

    Why wasn't that big open spot filled in on that bad foot?

      Some concern that there might be an active tract- if covered, it can then abscess. As it grows out, it should close up.

    Does the patch allow for new hoof growth? Does the new growth push the patch out of the way? How does new material grow?

    • @FarrierProducts
      @FarrierProducts  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The hoof wall grows from the top down. So as it grows out, the patch moves down and is then trimmed when it's time. It takes about 12 months for the wall to grow a completely new wall so this one has 5-6 months to go.
