  • From Winchester, Roman Road 42a ends it's journey at the former capital city of the Atrbates tribe and Roman City of Calleva Attebatum in Silchester in Hampshire. Still encircled by it's magnificent late 3rd century wall, I take an in depth exploration into this truly abandoned ancient city to reveal over 2000 years of history. With a couple of surprises!

Fantastic job, surprised it is not better preserved with more information plaques and kept clearer for light tourism. Without what you have created, I would have walked around there oblivious to what i was looking at. Thank you.

Fantastic Bob. That clay/terracotta pipe definitely looks to be original to the Roman occupation 👍🏻Well done mate.

Cheers Steve. Not confirmed as to Roman origin but it looks to fit the bill.

Great video! I've been to Calleva many times and haven't noticed half the things you pointed out. I'll look at it with new eyes next time I go there. Thanks

12:00 I am simply astounded, the fact that a Roman clay pipe is not only intact but is still transporting water blows me away! Great find there, you certainly have an eye for this!

Don't know for sure if the water pipe is Roman but it certainly is in the correct place. Thanks for watching.

Hi Bob, what a great production this was, well done! Two more parts to come as well, so I read.
The drainpipe didnt look obviously uniform so as to be something modern, so how old could it be?
Really good use of the drone and lidar together with your mapwork. Its amazing how the street layout can still be distinguished from above.
Look forward to seeing the next episode. All the best!!

Thank David. I really don't know how old the pipe. Wishful thinking wants it to be Roman. If we could see a bit more might help. If it was tapered it would be a clue.

Thanks for sharing. Is the route you followed freely available to the public? I must stop and explore when I ride past.
