when you look at a game like this that is decades old and still has such a strong following and is still generating revenue on steam it is hard to imagine that there is no one in the industry creating a new modern version of this game. The concept is already there and tweaked to near perfection, all it requires is modern code and a graphical polish. I wonder if the right group of people in the community and a kickstarter campaign could get the job done
Hey Resonance, I just started playing AoE2 again with a bunch of coworkers when we discovered we all used to play it back in the day. Your videos have been crazy helpful in getting me back up to speed. Thanks for the awesome and entertaining content!
Holy shit am I glad this game's competitive community is still active. I've never seriously played any RTS games before this one, thank you so ch for your guides!
Man, that Japanese army. Halberdiers, Samurai, and Onagers seems really strong. Normally, I would say champions would do well about the standard Halb + Onager (as long as they're spread out enough) but the Samurai would crush champs.
Hi Captain Squirrel! More Armello is on the way. I really enjoyed it and it warms my heart to see that everyone else liked it too. :D The reception was great
Speaking of counters. I think I finally can wrap my head around the byzantines. Go for something that make sense and then adapt endlessly against the opponents armies, countering and slowly overwhelming. Had to play loads of total war campaigns to drill that into my head. :P
I need to watch less youtube because i started University. Thank you for your contribution to AoC and keep on the good work and keep in mind, that it is your channel. Do what you want =)
Ahh righto, sometimes I forget to mention that but that's a great tip Daniel. One of the best ways to beat mass Longbowmen is also by having some Capped/Siege Rams in the front of your army, the archers will automatically target them and waste damage. Works great vs Plumed Archers as well.
Res you're missing the key ingredient: Seige rams KILL longbows. If you have 200 rams and 200 longbows and you target the longbows with the rams, then the rams will kill the longbows before the longbows kill the rams. Why bother with other units such as skirmishers or onagers when you can ram you way to victory?
Actually, 200 longbows will destroy 200 rams pretty badly :( Reason being that the 200 longbows can all target one ram at the same time, whereas the rams only have 1 range so they have to work their way through one at a time. If they are all lined up and fighting one on one, then yes the rams actually do win :D but realistically, they won't.
Resonance, I played the basic game, cripes, was it so many years ago? LOL!! Bought AoE2 from Steam a couple of days ago, and having a TOTAL BLAST doing the solo campaigns. I'm slow, hesitant and awful, but thanks to your vids got back into the game. Subscribing to you and other posters, just because. THANKS! Questions: Edit: Subscribing to Spirit of the Law, T90, The Viper, any others I should look at? By the by, do only .1 or .2 percent of players do the campaigns? They rock! Tough, and NOT like PvP/PvE Often with unusual challenges.
You're wrong about the efficiency of lumber camp placement. Placing the camp directly adjacent to the tree line leads to villagers constantly bumping into each other, and when they bump into each other they stop moving for as long as it takes a moving villager to move a whole tile. It is better for villagers to have to walk an extra tile than to be constantly running into each other and getting blocked -- especially since this can lead to villagers getting "trapped" and ceasing to work altogether.
Worth it in team games. Get them into the fight during the castle age and then transition into trebs and cannons in Imp. Cataphracts are ridiculously strong castle units (non elite). they can kill 4-5 pikemen
Red player happens to be my little brother. I'm not incredibly surprised he would make a mistake like forgetting to create more villagers. I played a 1v1 with him before and he SOMEHOW was able to put up a half decent assault on me with only 45 villagers. I couldn't make any offensive maneuvers without being destroyed. Granted I am not a very competitive player and I really only play single player in my free time here at college, so I was holding off any major offensive attack until i got post-imp, full Ethiopian powerhouse (Shotel Warriors are OP when massed and full blacksmith upgraded btw). Eventually I realized when I hovered over spies tech that he had such few villagers so I started mass collecting gold and purchased spies, which allowed me to flank his army and beat the tar out of him with onangers, then proceed to run his few villagers over, destroy his TCs and just keep him pressured until he ran out of resources (I used spies to specifically kill all his vils). He has gotten better the more times we have these "Just for Fun" 1v1s and he's learned the only way to kill me is by rushing me before I get Castle. With my "wait till I can ruin everything" playstyle if I get to castle he's dead. This desire to beat me inspired his "Heavy Rush" style of play, but in this case, he really should have played more defensive and paid attention to creating vils. I'm not saying this to defend my little brother, he wants to be a competitive AOE player and he definitely should use this as a learning experience... and because anyone who's laughing at him, I'm kinda chuckling along too.
Rush him in feudal with 4-5 of scouts, archers or men at arms. He doesn't make enough villagers so you can raid him him to cripple his economy easily. He won't even get to the point where he can attack in castle with knights or whatever. Get the armor upgrade.
Hey Resonance, I have a quick question about counterplay. How do you deal with a paladin spam? We have that one guy in private matches, who always spams paladins, I thought its possible to counter them with pikes or something but they lose in 1v1. I know, the price is better, so I could do about 3 pikes vs 1 paladin but the population is set very low, so thats not possible. Should I try onagers or something because of their aoe-damage?
Hi Melak. Indeed there are, Patch 4.8 is on the way but I don't know when it's coming out (probably within 2 weeks to 6 weeks from now). I posted about it briefly on my Facebook and Twitter pages, apparently it is going to contain bug fixes, fixed multiplayer restore, and "real performance improvements" according to the devs. I hope it's good! twitter.com/Resonance22 facebook.com/Resonance22
If you play as the Italians, and the enemy player doesnt make any siege units or isnt the Goths, then are they one of the strongest civs? (because of the Genovese Crossbowmen x Arbalest x Elite Skirmisher, plus adding some cavalry and/or hand cannoneers)
i think Italians is the strongest civ in the game, all u need is 1 combo, Genoese crossbowmen for calv+infantry ,bombard cannons cuz they're cheaper than trebs and more mobile, with continuous stream of hussars from 5+ stables for all siege, huskarls and skirms. sadly i cant get it running before 38 min so, i guess that's a weakness.
Italians are decent after they got a massive buff with AOAK. They used to be terrible. Elite genovese crossbows do pretty destroy cavalry civs though, since usually mass paladins is a counter to mass archers. Any civ with good seige should be able to destroy an italian archer army that isn't well defended. Bombard cannons deal splash damage, so they counter mass archers quite well too. Mass hand cannoneers + trash + bombards is a good combo with any civ that can build it.
Koreans are very powerful in the late game, but their lack of a substantial economic bonus---their only bonus is to gather stone more quickly---makes them weak in the early game. This bonus does make them a good civilization for tower rushing, however. In the African Kingdoms they are actually very powerful because of the free guard tower upgrade and the arrow slits technology that makes towers stronger.
isnt always better to rush to feudal, if you want to fastcastle? I mean i think is worth, if you rush feudal and get the economy upgrades you will get to castle even sooner. Btw just bougth the game a week ago
It totally depends on what strategy you want to go with when you fast castle. There are many different kinds of fast castles. If you are in the pocket of an Arabia team game, then you likely will be going with knights when you reach the castle age, and should aim to have more villagers (pop 27+) when you go up to Feudal. On a map like Arena or Black Forest, if you are just going for a boom, then you can click up with pop 25, and some civs can even get away with lower populations. If you want to go up with a Castle and make unique units, then you need villagers on stone, so you generally click up at 28 pop. On the other hand the Mongols can use their Dark Age bonus that lets them gather food from hunted animals faster to do a fast castle into a boom by clicking to Feudal at 22 pop, or even lower if the build is efficient enough. There are strategies where you use the market to sell/buy resources during Feudal to go up faster. Going to the Feudal Age faster can help you get to the Castle Age faster, but if you don't have enough villagers working while you are going up, then you won't have enough resources to keep your production going. It isn't worth it to build 4 Town Centers if you don't have the food for them to produce villagers, or to build 2 stables if you only have the resources to produce knights from 1 of them. Also, the economy upgrades generally slow down your advance times. There is a short term cost (in resources and research time) that produces a long term benefit (more efficient villager work), but if you are trying to advance to the next age quickly then you don't have enough time for the long term benefit to kick in, so the short term cost just ends up slowing you down.
no you wont get up sooner because if you rush to feudal you will propabl go up at 22 population.if you want to go fast castle you want more villagers(27-28) because WHILE you are advancing to feudal your villagers will collect more resources and by the time you hit feudal you will just need to build 2 buildings and go up to castle immediately Also the economy upgrades are important only if you have a critical mass of villagers first, for example if you have 5 vills on wood its better to put another 2-3 on wood instead of resarching the economy upgrade
Please speak more clearly. You eat your own words and I think it's also a matter of accent. For non native English people is not really easy to understand. Thank you

now there is
Brandon DiMatteo what game is it???
Empires Apart, but I'll probably stick with AoE2HD
Isometric view is the best, it really doesn't need any upgrades
now there is definitive edition coming up :D
Everything you need to know about Unit Counters and which units to make. :) Enjoy!
Hey Resonance, I just started playing AoE2 again with a bunch of coworkers when we discovered we all used to play it back in the day. Your videos have been crazy helpful in getting me back up to speed. Thanks for the awesome and entertaining content!
Glad to hear it Kevin! Thanks for the comment! :D Makes all the work worthwhile
thanks for the AOE content res
t90official just doesn't have the voice for casting
not that he's a bad caster, but you know
Holy shit am I glad this game's competitive community is still active. I've never seriously played any RTS games before this one, thank you so ch for your guides!
Damn, those Magyars architectural buidlings are cool.
Man, that Japanese army. Halberdiers, Samurai, and Onagers seems really strong. Normally, I would say champions would do well about the standard Halb + Onager (as long as they're spread out enough) but the Samurai would crush champs.
Hey resonance, are you gonna upload more of Armello? Its a really intersting game and was fun to watch, and seemed that you like it aswell :)
Hi Captain Squirrel! More Armello is on the way. I really enjoyed it and it warms my heart to see that everyone else liked it too. :D The reception was great
Very informative commantary, thanks for the tips. And btw i really like that you are trying to be so positive about red!
what did sofaputen do? In the start Res says dont ever do it again? What was missed before the game :p
I don't know but near the end of the video someone comments that he was spamming way too much and Res said he didn't read/follow the rules.
Speaking of counters. I think I finally can wrap my head around the byzantines. Go for something that make sense and then adapt endlessly against the opponents armies, countering and slowly overwhelming. Had to play loads of total war campaigns to drill that into my head. :P

I believe mass siege rams can beat mass longbowmen xD good vid res, as always!

Probably a dumb thing to mention, but... I read your comment in your voice :D

If you loaded 6 rams into a ram them the 6 rams would be protected from the longbows.

Cataphracts.
They're force multipliers.
But pretty expensive, especially the upgrade! Often theres not enough time and resources to simply invest in them :/
Worth it in team games. Get them into the fight during the castle age and then transition into trebs and cannons in Imp.
Cataphracts are ridiculously strong castle units (non elite). they can kill 4-5 pikemen
Elites were the same, except they got "nerfed" when halbs were added to AOK.

lucimon45 im not an expert but i think if you use pikes and onagers it should do the job
Juandavid567 the onagers might kill the pikes
18:35 a hero was born
Had to stop the video! The idea of launching Teutonic Knight via trebuchet is mindblowing!!!!!!
The real question is: does it live when it lands since it has so much armour?
The question is does it matter? With ammount of armor the landing should create hole inside elehant.
That... is an awesome point.
It's reminding me of the Jack Be Nimble cheat from AoE 1, it was so much fun.
Can resonancebot play nomad (at least a tiny bit better than the default new HD ai)?
What was the drama with sofa at the start of the stream? Did he do something wrong after last game?
Thanks bro ..
I can use it my own game ... nice video .... plss try to make a video about attacking strategy ....
How'd you get your chat in the bottom bar?
What language are you talking in?
I love your videos.

HOW DO I ZOOM OUT LIKE YOURS IS ?
Lol you talked about "Faker" , a hidden League of Legends Fanboy ^.^
Aw yeah boy!
I wanna see Google deepmind play AoE II
Yes! It already played Starcraft, lets see AoE!!
is the viper still playing'?
Yes, he streams from time to time on twitch
He even streams his games

I invest a little more on lumberjacks for farms; About 1:2 or sometime 1:3. Any advice anyone?
So Res. Do you ever get tired of saying pretty much the same thing at the beginning of every game? No hate i'm just wondering
the faker reference at 24:48 lmao
am i what people in the industry call, first ;]
Game needed more Teutonic knight spam
hi res
Please speak more clearly. You eat your own words and I think it's also a matter of accent. For non native English people is not really easy to understand. Thank you
hmmm
im so shit in attacking man :(
Damn,these graphic are shitty.My man,you get props!
:)
Game itself was a pretty boring 3v2
you sound like elon musk
15 minutes in... "to deal with scouts you need spearmen".
Wow, what a waste of time.
calm your tits
