But... but... the whole fun with AOE is to take a large area, build the perfect unpenetrable fortress and defend yourself untill they run out of gold and stone. 2-4 hours of gameplay depending of the map.
+josh Strunk I used to do that when I was younger. Me and my two cousins always played team games regicide against other AI's and whatever map we played, we just defended at all cost. When they only had Skirmisher and other cheap units left, we attacked combined with fully upgraded Paladins and a swarm of Trebs from 3 different angles. When you saw the battle chart after, there was like 4 hours with straight line, and the last 10-15 min the chart pointed at total destruction. 2000 kills and less than 50 death was not a uncommon scenario. Good times ;)

Olav Haraldsonakadenhellige yeah if you are going to fast castle you want to be clicking that castle age upgrade around 13:30 to 14:30. Some high level players can do this by 12:30 but that takes a lot of micro.

Thanks! You can definitely do this on Arabia or other maps, but only if you're not on the edge (flank) of your team. Most Arabia players in the pocket typically go for a fast Castle Age though, and then fight other players while Booming. You can Boom on easy to defend maps like Black Forest, Michi, etc, and not make any military until the Imperial Age, but on other open maps you really want to focus on making a Castle Age military while making many town centers and villagers. :)
For me its be get up to feudal a bit faster than the AI on standard, build some forward barracks, stables, and archery ranges for later, get rushed by 20 man at arms when the only military i have is my starter scout halfway across the map resulting in me scrambling to get my lumberjacks to build some towers.

That is actually a really good question and I should have addressed that in the video. +Fishe Remember buildings and units' hotkeys. They save you a lot of time. When you're preparing an attack, it's useful to hotkey groups of buildings, so all same type units can be controlled through the hotkey (production w/shift, rally point). Micromanagement benefits a lot from hotkeys. If a group of crossbowmen encounter a mangonel, you can split it in half through a formation, thus avoiding the mangonel shot, and their consequent death. Basically, learn to control villagers with hotkeys, to produce units from buildings, and you'll be fine.
Really helped. I'm a new player and tested this on standart bots. Which are hard to me xD. Been playing for 2 days tho. At the end of the match I had the highest score and had about 50k wood 40k food 10k stone and gold. Reached all the ages first and upgraded my army to max really quickly in the Imperial age.
@Resonance22Channel why did you build multiple markets? just so you can build carts faster and to have extra ones if they get destroyed? or is there another reason?
Instead of selling your stone to go to castle, wouldn't it be better to just mine gold in feudal? After all you need the stone for the TCs. I've seen others sell their stone for a fast Castle, but they were going for a knight rush, not a boom.
I don't get it why you don't queue your farm production. The new builds always have a small delay and your wood stock is sufficient enough to make the queue. Can you tell me what's the catch here? I am really curious. Thx!
Yes, as long as you have 2 villages building one of your first houses (or just 1 if playing Spanish). Exceptions are Chinese (start with no food) and Mayans (start off housed because of +1 Villager start) - those always start with Loom
Hi, I have a question. As a new player, when is the best time to start building additional town centers. Sometimes I go games against the AI and they have 5 where I only have 2-3, so if there is a way to know when it's good to start making more I'm clearly missing the signs. Any help is appreciated.
This strategy seems to work pretty well on this map since not much walling is required. On more open maps you'd want to invest in some military a little earlier though, otherwise you'd get crushed. I noticed on the hard difficulties the computer will create a few trash units in the castle age as a defensive measure, then go all out in imperial age.
Does this work very well in SP campaigns? The AI tends to attack fast and is already very built up and often outnumbers the player so rushing them can be hard, but I thought maybe if I could come up with good strategies to stall them like walls and mangonels I might be able to boom in those hard mode campaigns and erase their advantage
What do you do if the opponent places castles next to your wall with pikemen next to it before castleage so you cant take it down with onagers or catapults? :)
+sir Philip Because you need to wall choke points. In that way, you close yourself, and you start to boom. You can only see choke points with an Explored map.
Why not go for more expensive units that last longer? For example: 30 Elite Longbowmen (assuming you're Britons) and 4 or 5 monks to heal? Maybe a few Halbs to stop cavalry?
Great vid. One thing I just noticed is that hunting can really delay your advancement. I plan to try this method without hunting. Sure hunting brings a lot of food, eventually, but not immediately when you need it. Hunting is better done in the feudal age when you also have farms and berries to get food up as needed.
I saw a tactic in age of mythology that suggests instead of building any walls early on, use houses to block areas instead. Was wondering if that kinda tactic could work in AoE2?
I´m not resonance22,but i think i can help.Building houses as walls actually is an strategy, but it´s mainly used in mpas like Green arabia.Houses are cheap and useful walls, but they don´t have enough resistance to take infantry(so it has no chance against siege). And also palisades are cheaper, and,if you are going to depend on those houses to hold the population, you´ll lose time to make villagers, and in early time are a little expensive. However,it´s still a good option to wall yourself, mainly because it´s dual function(pd:sorry for bad english,it´s not my native language)
I'm confused how you're zoomed out so far... mine feels really close, the buildings are huge and I have to move around a lot. I am however playing off the original CD that my dad used to have lol. That could very well be the reason why.
How would you make it so that a villager has instructions to build 3 barracks one after another? also how do you do that hotkey thing with the barracks and stables so that your military units go to a set point after they spawn?
Holding shift you can build many buildings one after the other if they're close enough. You can set the place you want them to go by choosing the building then just right-clicking the place you want them to go.
guys i downloaded aoe 2 HD .. but in game styles i dont have standard i have all other moods ,, but icant find any mood that ican build more than 1 Tc .. any help plz ?
I used to build farms at dark age and boom like this. Now if don't have an awful start and I go well with only hunting (and berries), I manage to get to feudal and the mill upgrade before starting to mass farms, and to castle and the two upgrades if the map has lots of food.
Good tutorial for the most part. Although I have to disagree with the strategy of not going after the boar or deer. The extra food boost that hunting provides allows you to reach castle much sooner. New players should search tutorials on how to properly lure boar
Why is yellow Hard Bot at feudal at 44th minute? I like your video, really, but how is such a defensive scenario plausible in a game where the enemy directly above us is not braindead?
Would it be possible for you to do a nomad tutorial? Whenever I play that gametype I never have enough resources at the start of the game and fall behind.
Yes. As gus said, reseeding those farms would make part of his wood unavailable. Resource choices are very important in early game, you don't want resources on hold when you could be using them for more important things at the time. Great question though Catcrumbs, I wondered the same thing not too long ago.
What do you do if you get swarmed by a bunch of eagle warrior at 25m? Edit: I just tried this and got to castle age by 18m. However the computer managed to break through the walls with eagle scouts which were soon backed up by rams. They upgraded to eagle warriors and made short work of my town. Please help!
+The Rationalist 2 build 2-3 baracks and 2-3 archery. Spam cheap spearman and pikes behind the wall and w8 for them to break it. 10x to your economy you can spam them like crazy, at the moment. Cheap and a lot. When push them back, just rebuild the wall.
Keep yourself walled and build a mangonel. Use the mangonel to hit anything that attacks your walls. If they start breaking through your wall build another wall behind it and keep hitting them with your mangonel. Build a defensive castle near the wall when you have enough stone. The computer is pretty dumb and will keep throwing units into your castle and mangonel fire - especially if it's a choke point.
would be interesting to see you discuss the finer points of your strategy and then use multilayer game-play for the demonstration. Not trying to doubt that they work just prefer watching mp game play :)
in this vid.. you didnt farm.. and you didnt wait until feudal to build farms.. usually i just play a chill game with friends and i dont need heavy competition.. but is it a good idea to always wait with farms til i can make the farm upgrade thus saveing quite a bit of wood..? or cud i make farms at any point.. ive watched a bit of spirit of the law for math on diffrent things aswell.. but i just wanted your opinion.. is it a good idea to have as a minimum for farms? always wait til feudal with farms.. or how important is farming right away?
+karlspel In the early ages, every piece of food counts. Lure your two boar in the Dark Age, get the deer between Dark Age and Feudal. It really helps. You shouldn't build too much farms on Dark Age, 4 is ok, 6 is kinda too much.
Just subscribed thanks trying to break my three game losing streak since i started playing online. i play 1v1 so I am guessing that the role of the market is different. Who would you be trading with.
Yourself actually, all you need to do is place the markets far enough from each other so that they will actually make gold, if your markets are too close to each other it wont work
Wow, I did a lame version of this guide and I've managed to beat new moderate ai effortlessly (previously it always swarmed me and took me either a rush or lengthy bulwark to win).
Was this video against orginal AI or AI? Also, do you have like a 'tips n tricks' video or something? Theres a lot of uninuitive things in AOE that a really annoying me. For example, when queueing tasks, that the last one you have to release shift. I also had no idea you could manually highlight multiple buildings for hotkeying until this vdeo (click and drag doesnt highlight multiple). Thanks :D
I'm an AoE3 player and recently bought AoE2 HD. Thanks for letting me know about releasing shift click, I was wondering why it didn't work properly in this game
AOE2 is a bit harder because there are four resources to gather and you have to make drop off points like the lumber and mining camps in AOE it's slightly easier.
Nice video, big help for new players who have no idea how others get such a huge score lead. So we make 100 villagers out of 200 pop, what about the trade karts? Do they count inside 100? normally how many trade karts do you make?
Ankur Bedi Trade carts and cogs and fishing boats all count as villagers (albeit specialized ones). I like to get at least a dozen trade carts going if I can, and at least 25 or more after the gold on the map runs out. At that point, whoever has the best trade is probably going to win.
I'm no good at being efficient in this game. My city needs to look good, I need straight rows, military areas, ect ect.
You should try out caesar III too then!
Yeah I'm the same strangely enough. Empire appearance comes first then military units
i think that your perfect game is Sim City
can you screenshot your city?
You should play Banished! You can make a massive medieval town, however you want.
But... but... the whole fun with AOE is to take a large area, build the perfect unpenetrable fortress and defend yourself untill they run out of gold and stone. 2-4 hours of gameplay depending of the map.

started playing two days ago been lurng boars since day one have only benefited from guides that told me to do si
I've missed these tutorials, it's literally been years!
my biggest mistake when I started playing was just focusing on getting to feudal too fast.
Died because lack of rescources
I have the opposite problem of not making enough villagers. Like, 14 villagers at 12 minutes.
Same
I mean with Tatara
DUDE you are my Hero !!!!!
your videos are so fricking good with all the tips and the advises and what to do and what not to do
i have a competition with 3 teams , the winner team will get 100$ , and the Top player of all gonna get 50$
with your videos i can easily get the top team and the top player !!!!
Thank you So MUCH
Thanks! There are plenty more on the way! :)
How do you see the timer? I'm very new in this game, sorry
hit f11
Drakon Lorek If you are playing against AI, u can also use F3 to pause the game and make more tasks at once.
Any guide on how to hotkey everything effectively? :o
Just personal preference, I wouldn't use hard or even annoying to reach keys, though.
Why do you TC next to the resources instead of just building a mining camp for example?
Is it just because of the villager production?
Some advice. Always try to do a fast Castle time. Reasons are, more TCs, and a mangonel or two to keep rams away from your walls.
You Know, it would be easier without those stronk knights whooping my ass as soon as the opponent hit castle
I've seen others sell their stone for a fast Castle, but they were going for a knight rush, not a boom.
yeah go for gold
I don't get it why you don't queue your farm production. The new builds always have a small delay and your wood stock is sufficient enough to make the queue.
Can you tell me what's the catch here? I am really curious. Thx!
Best "AOE" I've seen so far! Thanks!
after you wall off and you get think you could be attacked would building tiers to defend yourself out just stick with the siege weapons for defense?
Extra tip, a few minutes before advancing make gold mines, then you can build the buildings and then advance
I have a question: If you start producing villager at 0:01, can you manage not to get housed?
No, maybe you can get Loom at that point, though you'll "lose" some seconds after the first house is finished and it still getting researched.
I just got the game ! Thanks for the tips
Used to play a lot but forgot the little things lmao this helped
Why always set Reveal Map to Explored when playing Black Forrest and that custom map you mentioned?
Was wondering if that kinda tactic could work in AoE2?
it does but if they're destroyed your pop max takes the plunge depending on alot lot of factors, and if your the huns they only serve as walls.
Edward Newgate If you're huns you cant build houses at all?
I dont think you can but like I said you get max pop right off the bat
Edward Newgate You said Hun houses only serve as walls? " and if your the huns they only serve as walls."
Question, what mod did you use to have such of large view ?? In my game I can hardly fit a single castle on that ?
I always go half pop cap as villagers too, it's so very important to keep resources up.
you make it look easy. played 600 hours still get rushed. good video. i just suck is all.
I'm confused how you're zoomed out so far... mine feels really close, the buildings are huge and I have to move around a lot. I am however playing off the original CD that my dad used to have lol. That could very well be the reason why.
Okay thanks! I changed my resolution and the "zoom effect" worked:)
How do you auto assign villagers to do a task once they are created?
Is he just moving the rally point?
yes thats how you get them to di it as soon as they are created.
Eric Forman thanks
Tom R np my friend.
Press where you want them to go along with shift and after they finish that they go to the point you set
damn speed racer, you're clicking everywhere so quick
guys i downloaded aoe 2 HD .. but in game styles i dont have standard i have all other moods ,, but icant find any mood that ican build more than 1 Tc .. any help plz ?
I don't see you doing anything that I am not, yet on the campaigns on standard difficulty, within 10 minutes I am being massacred by the AI !!
why do you not get the mill-upgrades. And when do you decide when to get them eventually? Can someone help me out here please?
til weber Try to find "How to make an economy boom in AOE 2"
til weber m.wikihow.com/Make-your-economy-boom-in-Age-of-Empires-2
I didnt get the farm part. How many farms do I have to build until I send the new villagers back to wood?
MisterZocker I believe he said until you get 500 food to age up.
Someone please explain what all the different colors and widths mean on the timeline screen
What's the best tactic beating a 27boom pop castleAge player. Then defends with pikes onagers till Imperial age. Heavy feudal -attack scout archers ???
Longbows
How do you add more than one of a building at a time? Without clicking and having to reclick everytime
Great Video, thanks for that!
Would this strategy work exactly the same if playing hungarians or Mongols?
What was the difference?
2020 still relevant very useful video thanks for the content
why get double bit axe but not the windmill improvement?
Why would you ignore buiding Monastery and collect relics?
Why is yellow Hard Bot at feudal at 44th minute? I like your video, really, but how is such a defensive scenario plausible in a game where the enemy directly above us is not braindead?
Would it be possible for you to do a nomad tutorial? Whenever I play that gametype I never have enough resources at the start of the game and fall behind.
Curious as to why he doesn't queue farm re-seeding at the mill from the beginning.
so that he deosn't have a lot of wood dead in the mill's farm refills
Yes. As gus said, reseeding those farms would make part of his wood unavailable. Resource choices are very important in early game, you don't want resources on hold when you could be using them for more important things at the time. Great question though Catcrumbs, I wondered the same thing not too long ago.
Great video. I'm going to go and try this now.
How to get that clock at the left top i don't have that in my game
would be interesting to see you discuss the finer points of your strategy and then use multilayer game-play for the demonstration.
+karlspel *facepalm* i mean he didnt hunt.. im basicly wondering if farming cud keep the food decent til feudal..
Yourself actually, all you need to do is place the markets far enough from each other so that they will actually make gold, if your markets are too close to each other it wont work
xxthelastdragonxx oh wait you can trade with yourself? thats really good to know xD
Wow, I did a lame version of this guide and I've managed to beat new moderate ai effortlessly (previously it always swarmed me and took me either a rush or lengthy bulwark to win).
How are you so zoomed out ? Is it a mod in steam work shop ?
I know this a old vid but I only just got back into the game but I have question, why do u need to make more markets?
Nvm u answered it, I just want to beat my friend. He always does a strategy like this so what strategy counters this? Fast castle?
Thanks for tutorial really helps the aoe2 community.
Are there any written instructions on tactics? Like boom tactic, water tactics, rush tactics... etc? Anyone has it?
lol, you have your booming economy army ready faster than i have my first knight rush attempt
Seb King np man, I found on out accident from a secondhand comment as well
AOE2 is a bit harder because there are four resources to gather and you have to make drop off points like the lumber and mining camps in AOE it's slightly easier.
Thank you for all your help you give out you have helped me on a lot
thank you this will help me look less noobie on stream
is it possible to run this soundtrack in The conquerors or even in Forgotten empries tho?
