  • This was History in the making with train action that was never before seen until now...
Today 6/22/2024 was a day for the books, it was the day that Reading & Northern's T1 Steam Locomotive #2102 not only departed from a brand new train station, but it also operated on sections of track that it's never ran on before (to my knowledge).
Since this is an event that has never happened before, I knew droves of people would be out to witness this event, so instead of opting for an all day chase, I strategically picked a few locations to film her in action in both directions, including turning around on the WYE at the Pittston yard.
It's great to finally see steam make it to this part of Pennsylvania and it shows that people love seeing it as well. Also be sure to check out the onboard footage from my friend ‪@JamieMakin‬.

Awesome job. This was exciting from start to finish. The whistle blowing and the steam when you caught it with the mountains in the background. Made me think of the old western movies. It was so shiny made me jealous, wished I could get my truck to shine like that lol. I do have midnight train air horn on my truck too. Thanks for filming this really enjoyed it

I got to see it from Tunkhannock while I was test driving a Jeep Wrangler that I recently bought not long after. And I got to see 2102 heading back to Tunkhannock Auto Mart.

There is something quite magical about watching an old train in motion. The distinctive sound of the whistle, the clickety-clack, and the whoosh of air in its wake is soul-stirring and oddly comforting. America lost something when train travel came out of fashion as the principal mode of long distance transportation. Thank you for this trip back in time!

Yeah, there isn't really any operating steam in western PA. But, you could ride behind the NKP 765 at the CVSR south of Cleveland, OH usually in September and a few years ago they ran there in May. The 765 was actually on this route on August 22 and 23, 2015 during a Norfolk Southern 21st Century Steam excursion from west of Bethlehem to Pittston and return. I was on it. I live west of Allentown, PA.

At 15:09 you can see me running up the hill to my dad. I needed him to unlock the car because my phone overheated and I needed an icepack lol. I've never been so scared before, because I didn't want to miss what I knew would be an amazing shot. We overheard the engineer telling a kid in Tunkhannock that the cemetery was around where the yard limit ended and that he was going to have 2102 wide open

Great video. I will admit, I'm not a true train fan, but there is something primal about the sight and sound of the old steam beasts. The hair literally stood up on the back of my neck when it whistled. The older I get, the more I appreciate the engineering( no pun intended) that went into the creation of the railway system and those monster locomotives. All done with hard work and human hands and brains, not computers and AI. And I got a good laugh seeing RJ hanging out of the window hollering at you lol.

Fantastic shots!!! I especially loved the one going through the abandoned factory, really combines both of your interests well. The only location I saw you at was the cemetery in Duryea. At the other locations I was on the opposite side of the train. That was a heroic effort to run up that hill for the final shots. Looking down from the tracks many times that always seemed very steep! Overall I think you had a great strategy for the day. Much as I longed to chase it, I knew I'd have a much better experience riding the train. It was the right choice as there were a lot more railfans chasing than I imagined. Glad you got to see Andy too. He was sitting on the bench at the platform when we went by.

The black and white beginning intro is beautiful! Loved all the views, but I think my favorite is the one looking from the cemetery when 2102 approaches out of the trees, with steam smoke billowing out of the smokestack, and comes around the bend in all its glory! Love the whistle, always gives me chills! What a gorgeous locomotive! Awesome train action and what an incredible historical event that you have now documented. It was fun to see RJ! 😉👍 Very awesome Jason, great video!!! I hope to check out #576 Nashville's 4-8-4, when they get it restored... I got pictures of it with my son back when he was 6 when it was sitting in centennial park now he's 15. I can't wait till they get it restored. I hope can go down and see it run, as my brother lives down there. It's an Alco versus that #2102 Baldwin last of its kind. Also I just learned the Union Pacific Big Boy 4-8-8-4 #4014 steam locomotive might be coming through my area here later this summer/fall. I don't believe there's a schedule out yet for it. So hopefully I can catch it running down the tracks. I imagine it will be going through my area so hopefully. Anyway awesome video again Jason! Take care, man, and as always thanks for sharing. 😉👍

This was so cool to see. I love trains and enjoyed the times we trained in the army of the loading/unloading of them etc. I am lucky enough to live near active tracks and anytime I see them come through I stop and watch to see what train unit comes through. Love seeing the Amazon trailers on there and all the others. The car trailers I wonder what vehicles are in them. And the amtrak is always good. Thanks for the great video. It is an oven right now. Stay hydrated! Lol you put in double time getting to the next traim spot you wanted to get to.
