To add to this, it really helps when you are trying to create something yourself. Once you start watching those tutorials, you know what your roadblocks are on your model / scene, so when something useful pops up, it really goes into your head and clicks.

There is one more important thing for the people just starting out: Give yourself a deadline and just make what seems cool, it will stop you from redoing your artwork and wasting time in stead of just practicing as much as possible... Once you see the area you want to work in (level design, character art, lighting artist or what ever) stick to it and master it, then move to another. Once you have practiced enough, you will learn how to formulate questions for your problems (and there will always be some, especially for the blende + unreal combo) and will be much faster at finding solutions. It is hardest when starting out, once you know Blender in general, you will be able to just google what you need. Good Luck!

@@SmallTownStory307 I was not as smart when starting out! I started out really ambitious and not really prepared for what is to come XD
So I did all the classics, aimed for photo realism, wanted to make huge and complicated things whilst not knowing the basics, trying to learn every field so I was jumping from one thing to another, no focus and no time constraints. It took me a bit of time to finally get it...
I also needed a lot of time to muster the courage to start with Unreal, that one was a nightmare!

When learning 3D or CAD the top off the learning hump, statistically, is usually reached around the 3 months mark. This is the point where things really start dropping into place and you begin to wonder how you ever thought this was so difficult; from the top of the hum it's freewheeling downhill all the way. To get over the hump it's a case of practice, practice, practice both those things that become easy and those that are a bit more difficult to grasp and understand. With the videos on TH-cam at your fingertips, learning 3D modeling has never been easier or more informative.

This video applies to me so hard. I used to have a problem with tutorials where I had to follow along the tutorial as closely as possible, and whenever I ran into a roadblock and couldn’t figure out the solution I would get so frustrated, get all the negative thoughts and feelings, and sometimes not touch blender for weeks. I have learned, atleast for these contained tutorials, to just improvise more and just keep going through the video even with roadblocks. As time has gone on, all the cumulative knowledge makes tutorials easier and easier and it has definitely translated to more progress in my personal projects. Thank you for the vid.

Thanks for the two tips josh , ive have started blender a week ago and tried the donut tutorial and advanced into mclaren modelling , following tutorial of course , i found it hard when it comes to those complex shapes that needs some kind of dedication for it , because maybe i lack of imagination , sometimes the vertex multiplied for no reason and slow down my progress just to fix somethings so it will looks like the one in the tutorial , This video change the way i think , maybe i need to start small and learning the basic of modelling in blender since im not really familiar with the program because im used to sketchup which has some kind of constraint , I feel like blender is something very versatile to work with . I wish you all the best and again thank you for you for the tips

I have not had tried to learn Blender yet, but I am learning different languages. What he suggests to do for Blender is the same thing I have had to do for learning Spanish. When I get stuck on a Spanish word, grammar, or sentence I have to applied the same kind of thinking with Spanish that he says about with Blender and it does help. I have gotten stuck or have a hard time understanding something even a little something and I have had to refocus on that. Doing the positive feedback loop and having to approach the language differently. There's certain rules in Spanish language with the grammar or sentences or words that you have to adjust yourself to and I imagine it can be a similar process learning something like animation. Basically I have had to do similar techniques with learning a different language. Having to readjust my mindset. One person even worded it as you're thinking in English and trying to apply it to Spanish. Well perhaps it can be the same here it can that your normal way of thinking is causing you to get stuck in Blender and therefore you have to readjust yourself and the way you're approaching it. And same goes with a language even if you're fully understanding a language if you are still picking up and learning some of the things you can go back and readjust the things you are having a hard time understanding. I am also trying to learn Ukrainian and have had to try and do the same with that it can be tough, but like with Blender I think as long as you keep practicing and readjusting yourself you'll probably be in a better position it can be a better mindset to begin with in general not just with Blender or languages but other things to.
Glad I stumbled across this video it's a reminder to me that a technique or way I am approaching something right now, learning a different language, can also be applied to other things I may have a difficult time on like trying to learn Blender, because Blender is a challenge for me right now.

How to learn ANYTHING: Do it! The only way to learn anything is by doing! Watching videos and reading alone will get you nowhere, you actually have to do the work (gasp). Wisdom cannot be learned by reading and watching, you must do the work. You will not always get it right the first time, but you will learn from your mistakes. Also, set reasonable goals and then work towards achieving them. It's common sense (or at least it will be once you are older).

How to ACTUALLY learn Blender: stop trying to find "hacks" and addons and learn actual fundamentals like proper topology (vital), material creation, lighting, UV, animation, color spaces, etc.
Otherwise you will end up like these people - only able to make various forms of shiny grey boxes.

Interesting Josh, also wanted to add; as someone getting more into blender recently I started using chatgpt to resolve issues that I do not know how to approach and cant find solutions online. Some examples where I used chatgpt was to resolve shading issues or create materials procedurally that I couldnt find tutorials for. Of course chatgpt isnt 100% accurate, but its good enough of a base to use and then through experimentation you can dial in exactly what you need.
    Hope it helps!

for me the problem was Vanilla blender. the default program is just.... okay. slightly better than Maya, with significantly worse UV tools. it was death by a thousand cuts of tiny dumb little things like "why can't I select two overlapping vertices" and the answer is "you have to turn on this obscure option only accessible through a hotkey every single time you want to select two overlapping vertices" and it would utterly halt my progress. thousands of tiny things like this, every time I tried, and they added up. this piled on top of hearing "blender is free blender is free blender is free."
the lesson I learned was: blender is only free if your time is worthless.
turns out that if you have run into an annoyance while working in blender, someone else has too and probably wrote an addon for it. there's a massive library of addons that improve blender, and they are cheap (or often free), powerful, easy to install and use, and offer some of the most freeform and efficient workflows in the industry.
this is like the 3d version of the digital painting debate between people who have tons of cool custom brushes and people who insist that the only brush to paint with is Hard Round. I don't have the time to paint a field of grass with the hard round brush, thanks.

What is actually frustrating for beginners is how many of the free tutorials leave something out, and then you have to figure out what they forgot to say or show in order to continue. This usually happens when they assume knowledge a beginner doesn't know. I do training on complex subjects and have rewritten lessons from someone else where this was a common issue. The feedback is always "why didn't the talk about or show that information in the original lesson". This is a common issue when the instructor is too familiar with the topic and can't put himself in the position of a beginner. I'm seeing the same issue in the blackmagic Resolve tutorials and have sent them marked up changes for their tutorial books.

best thing is to start making a basic form or an idea and then build from there, and don't be overwhelmed by all those menu's and stuff at first, i learned the app by first trying to make just a simple cloth simulation and went from there. making little things like that, just to get the hang of blender
i find there are plenty of really good short tutorials out there i struggle a bit with the long tutorials..
im really enjoying the process.. right now im making a slushie machine.. so whenever i want to make something that i don't know how to make, i'd search how to make that particular thing, For instance maybe a cable, or a vent Grid, etc etc..

Hey Josh, I am not an experienced 3d Artist but I have been working with Blender since 2020 I had to take a 1.5-year break from 3d due to some reasons and the main thing that helped me get back my flow with blender was focusing on the big picture. Hear me out here, focus on the big picture and then start focusing on your minor issues and the small things that makes the scene perfect. Also rather than tutorials do work for your portfolio, that helps a lot.

So far the worst part of learning blender is advice like this coming from long established pros who've lost touch with the early stages of learning.
My problem starting out with this program has never been any 1% life advice hack or mindset error, it's the multifaceted fact that it's simply a very complicated program with a lot of convoluted and unconventional (unintuitive) controls. I'm not the problem, I've been showing up, grinding multiple tutorials, actually putting in an honest effort- and that has yielded incremental improvements over a long stretch of time, but blender (and it's community) are the ones that require exclusive use of hotkeys, redundant manual inputs for basic functions which are only one or two inputs in other programs, and a monster of a backlog of obsolete instructional material.
Blender is simply very hard to learn, and it's contributors and community members like to blame newcomers more than optimizing the interface for beginners, it's as simple as that.
Don't blame the student for the teacher's failings.

      @rayjynx ปีที่แล้ว +2

im sure a lot of people would disagree with you on this one. you're not wrong, per se. but outdated instruction material? come on, it's still very updated compared to 3ds max or even maya at times, there's way more content creators and instructors for blender compared to 3ds or maya. you cannot blame the software. hotkeys are efficient. sure they're tricky to learn but once you get the hang of it you'll find that to be very easy, that's the whole point of "learning" after all. ruling yourself out as the problem is very illogical, it's never too difficult to learn anything if you put the right amount of effort. for that all you need to do is practice. if you feel burnt out, dont use blender untill you feel like it's pulling you towards it, if you know what i mean. blender is far more intuitive than any other 3d software I've used, with the exception of cinema4d. the only reason why i mentioned "you're not wrong" is because how you find the learning path to be depends on where you're coming from and what you've used in the past. a 3ds max user will never like the idea of playing with hotkeys or any function which they can't click with the mouse, and that's okay. you just need to get rid of the mindset that every other software will be the same, once you do that you'll find blender quite easy to learn and work with.
