      Yeah, it's annoying that she had that period where she only got typecasted for being hot. Then again, also (perhaps even more) annoying when people pigeonhole her like that and don't give her other movies a chance because they just assume she can't do anything else than be hot.

    Jared Leto is the “dreamy-eyed/December 30th” guy you’re thinking of. He’s had a very long acting career so I’m sure you’ve seen him before (Requiem for a Dream, another good movie, was probably his breakout acting role). He also fronts the band Thirty Seconds to Mars (along with his brother, Shannon, who is the drummer).
    And yes, Elisabeth Moss (Polly) plays June in The Handmaid’s Tale.

    28 days with Sandra Bullock was another good movie but it was about a rehab facility

    • @mariannehavisham8323
      @mariannehavisham8323 4 วันที่ผ่านมา

      In rehab though a lady I massively related to (she was a closeted bisexual bulimic and had ocd and anxiety -so did I) was diagnosed with bpd while in rehab -I also have bpd -she read the diagnosis criteria and said 'isn't that just addiction though?' -and she had a point because almost everyone in the rehab fit the diagnosis criteria for bpd. 12 step language is different to mental health language but often they have different terms to describe the same condition. At 19 I was diagnosed with avoidant personality disorder -in rehab at 22 they called it 'sexual, social and emotional anorexia' -different terms but as far as I could see they described the same condition -just 12 step language versus mental health language -different language describing the same stuff

    Yes, this is based on a true story. Susanna wrote a book about her experience in the institution. Just a fun fact. Lisa and Susanna did reunite after the institution. Lisa got the help she needed and went on to have a baby.

  • @allieren
    @allieren 5 วันที่ผ่านมา +23

    This one of my very favorite movies. And yes Susanna Kaysen is a real person, who is still alive, who wrote the book Girl, Interrupted about her suicide attempt, diagnosis of borderline personality disorder, and subsequent hospitalization. The real hospital she was at is called McLean Hospital Belmont and is here in the Boston area and still kinda looks, at least on the outside, like the hospital in the movie. And for the most part, the patients described in the book and movie were based on patients Susanna was in the hospital with.
    I was briefly a psych nurse and you guys are right, it takes a specific kind of person to do that job. It is very different nowadays in most ways than it was back then. Treatment options and meds are different, diagnoses and criteria are different, and the length of time someone like Susanna would be in the hospital is very different. And someone like Lisa would probably end up long term in a state hospital. We still do the safety checks though and a staff member still has to watch you when you use something like a razor. 😉

    • @xzonia1
      @xzonia1 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I didn't know until I saw this movie that some people shave their legs in the bathtub. As a teen, I always sat on the toilet seat and shaved mine (fully dressed in shorts and a t-shirt), rinsing the razor in the sink. I stopped bothering to shave my legs once I was out on my own, and my hair stopped growing on my legs, so problem solved. Seems dangerous to shave in the bathtub; too easy to slip up. The weird things you learn about other people when you watch movies! Lol. Thank you for helping others during your time as a nurse.

      If you love this , I think you would like a film called Poppy Shakespeare.
      It was a tv movie over here in the UK with Naomie Harris. It's based on a book.
      Basically, Poppy is court ordered to attend group sessions with mentally ill people but there's nothing wrong with her. She makes friends with one of the longest members and they slowly change places. One becoming crazy,and the other getting better. It's sooooo good.

    Winona Ryder was also one of the Exec Producers on this film, based on a true story. Angelina Jolie, whom few had even heard of at the time, kind of stole the show from Winona in this film, earning herself a Best Supporting Actress Oscar. Did you not recognise Jared Leto? You probably didn't recognise Vanessa Redgrave. It killed me how heavily you cut this film though. I suppose I can understand, as someone who cuts reaction videos, that you probably had a big fight with copyright bots, but so many scenes that I found very moving were gone.

    She attempted suicide, was clinically depressed, self destructive and had impulse control issues -diagnosed with bpd -she WAS mentally ill -that IS a problem
    She had an affair with a older married man as a teenager and attempted suicide -these are symptoms of mental illness -suicide is always a mental illness -and the affair in context -you can see it's self destructive behaviour and an impulse control issue -please don't minimise these issues
    She attempted suicide. Her mental illness almost killed her and almost kept her institutionalised for life. She was institutionalised for a year.
    Healthy people are not institutionalised for one year and heallthy people don't attempt suicide aged 19
    That is not normal. Please don't minimise chronic mental illness. She was severely mentally unwell. Minimising that is ignorant, irresponsible and dangerous and spreads misinformation

    I just finished your There's Something About Mary reaction then did this. What is so great about the two of you is your hilarious with comedies, great with deep themes of dramas, amazed with sci-fi's and have fun with thrillers. You two also do more smaller and forgotten movies and they're great too
    Many reactors just don't cover all the genres you two do and have great reactions to all of them. Some are good with comedies and bad with drama but not you two! Best reactions channel going around.

    Don’t even needed to have been there but 1,000% with BJ. No woman on the planet knows how to wrap things up. You hear them on the phone and can tell the conversation is about to end….2 hours later still carrying on. Women will walk to the door as guests are leaving but then 45 min later still standing in the door talking about absolutely nothing. No chance BJ is wrong here. Woman CANNOT say goodbye like a normal human being. Don’t get me started in the random neighbor in the yard conversations. Ladies, learn how to say goodbye. 😂😂😂

    The executives over at Warner Bros should have seen this film and gave Brittany Murphy a call like:
    "So, do you wana play Harley Quinn"

    Yes, we all know theres a bro code, we're just teaching u fella's we also have grl code. Standing with my sisters✌. Lol, u guys crack me up. Amazing film, A reality of what young women, victims of different kinds of abuse went thru in the 60s and still go thru. Mental illness was def treated differently back in the day. Absolutely horrible how survivors/victims not only have to survive the abuse we have to survive a life of PTSD and the abusers just get to live their normal life. The whole u think u have it bad, til u see those dealing with worse and learn from it, in my opinion. Theres a film called "Frances" a 1982 biographical tragedy film about the actress Frances Farmer. A look at how mental illness was really treated back then. Thanx so much, take care, Peace

    I'd love to see a therapist or M.D. watch this movie to give their opinions. Today we have more medications and options for therapies and treatments. I would like to see what they thought would be done today. I love Angelina in this movie. I have the DVD and in the commentary the director talks about how she reminded him of Jack Nicholson. As an actor you can see her do very bad things and her acting still makes you want to watch. I wish we had gotten more roles like this in her career. Her beauty put her into other roles. Maybe as she gets older we will get to see some more of these roles again. Some other young Angelina roles are Gia she won a golden globe for and the miniseries True Women but it might be easier to get The Bone Collector if you haven't seen it before A Mystery with Denzel Washington.

    The book is nothing like a movie. It’s Suzanna’s thoughts on life and mental illness. It’s super interesting. Lisa is in the book but she plays a very small part. It’s still a great book and very thought provoking! And it might answer your questions as to why she was in the hospital.

    As a person who’s been in the psych ward 4 times as a minor the depiction of everything in this movie is on point in accuracy, though my experience was a little different because I was in wards for teens.
