This strategy is very clever by Carl I’d say. Many people say that he’s really humble and down to earth (which he is) and other companies would never say good things about a rival brand, blah blah blah. But if you pay attention to all these “reviews” of Carl, he always says the good things about phone and then really elaborates on its weaknesses while comparing them with the Nothing phone when possible. (For example, from what I’ve seen all his reviews start by saying “I used to like early versions of this because of this reason, but now they’ve changed it”) Many say he’s being open minded and honest, I’d say he’s basically saying what’s wrong with these other phones. Playing some next level mind games. Very clever.

He also says Samsung didn't change much on it from the s22 and you shouldn't do that and they literally just released their first second gen product that looks the same as their first. 😂
Right I rarely use the pen so I can agree a bit not completely. However the software is amazing and I like it over my 14pro max. Spen handy for signs and taking pics.... I love the dex and it's crazy when samsung change their design every two year or so and others doing the same for 7years
bad idea, you really should've just bought a Pixel 7 Pro... One UI is an absolute mess, and while it may seem like the opposite right now, years down the line you'll notice how overrated Samsung is
@@zellzoii I gave the pixel up for the iPhone. One u.i has been the most comfortable, sensible u.i I've used. The S23U focuses on the things that matter and I appreciate that. Unless doing unnecessary design changes they focused on the soc, camera, battery life, speaker etc. It was the biggest jump I have seen from flagship devices in more recent years.
Samsung's software is quite literally the best I have used in terms of customization and reliability. I moved from a OnePlus 7 Pro to an S21 Ultra and thought I would miss Oxygen OS, but OneUI is significantly better.
Nothing's marketing team is brilliant. Nothing has launched only one smartphone till date and it is commendable how they keep that product alive in all kinds of discussions in the tech world. And they are levaraging products from other brands for that.
He Says S23 Ultra is not changed from S22 Ultra, But the same is with iPhone 12 to 13 to 14 .. He wants to diss Samsung but not Apple because he wants to compare Nothing company with Apple because Apple company means premium and not Samsung. Also Samsung is direct Nothing competition but not Apple... Spen is nothing, Zoom is nothing.. What a lot of BS.. if you don't like the size you can go with S23 or S23 Plus.. Also he says UI of Samsung has not changed since last 14 yrs... It's so clean , every tech youtubers like that... Nothing knows Samsung is eating into its market but Apple won't eat because both Apple and Nothing is in two different price range but not Samsung.. That is a fact. More and more people are getting to know about the brand. However, whenever someone asks for a product suggestion in that price range to enthusiasts like us, Nothing keeps popping up. However, to be frank, Nothing as a brand is yet to excite me. Like how he compared the SPen to paper amd pen, i don't need a glyph interface, have a normal flashlight at home.
@@rinzzlerr every company when it's small they can do all these kind of marketing things, same was with OnePlus, once they become big you can't do things these people are doing as they would be busy.

I don't think he spent much time with the s23 ultra because otherwise he would have noticed that the software, especially the way it's designed is perfectly for a device this size. The multitasking is superior compared to other devices and they done a great job with optimising everything on the screen so that you can control it better with one hand.
It's a preference thing, me I personally like one UI, that's cos I'm coming from stock android (android One, anybody remember those) then MiUI which is it's own unique thing with small quality of life inconsistencies that can annoy you and local skins from the likes of Infinix and Tecno and Oppo. So till date One UI is the most feature Richa and least likely to break android skin I've experienced

I believe the upgrade this year is phenomenal, you'd know if you REALLY used the s23 ultra. In my opinion, the s23 ultra is the best phone out now. The software and hardware that make up this phone responds seamlessly like a newly oiled wheel. But then Huawei's CEO also called iPhone the best phone in the world some years back 😂
All the things he listed as things he didn't liked are the things precisely why I love samsung lol. I cannot live without the spen and samsung software can look too much but it's actually pretty robust and samsung is actually the android company with the best software support, beating even google and almost as good as apple. Desing is subjective, and to me, the s23U is way more attractive and futuristic than any iPhone, but hey, I respect his opinion nonetheless.

And coming to the software part, OneUI is amazing. It's really well optimised, and has very smooth animations this time (coming from the s23 ultra user). It also has a lot of features which each individual can tweak according to their liking. The software is amazing, however I agree that it "looks" Outdated now. The UI definitely needs an overhaul.

Noice. However, I disagree with you on several things, Carl. 1. It IS a huge upgrade considering the Videography has been pushed to the next levels, stabilizationis in a league of its own, battery life is MASSIVE, and it literally competes with iPhone 14 Pro Max, neck-to-neck in almost everything while DOMINATING the photography part and doing, for the first time, just fine with the videography, too. 2. S-Pen can come in handy. Wireless functions aside, writing and navigation becomes a habit. Personally using it on my tab and I can't survive without it, anymore. And, I definitely don't agree with your let-it-be idea for pen and paper. I've completely shifted to my Samsung tab for notes and stuff. I use S-Pen, now. Saved hundreds of pages, if not thousands. 3. iPhones have done literally nothing to upgrade their design while Samsung has been at it, every year. Give them a rest, they updated everything else and they did it, magnificantly and massively. 4. Agreed, the pre-installed apps are a bit annoying, but most can be uninstalled. About the UI, it's just simple-looking and sophisticated, intead of flashy and entertaining. However, the features that are fit in it- 🤌. BIXBY ROUTINES. So useful! 5. So, yeah, I doubt comparing pricing of Nothing Phone (1) with Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra is even logical. I can get 3 Micromax In Note 1's at the price of Nothing Phone (1), but would that make a difference? Obviously not, the difference in software and hardware couldn't be more obvious.
Well, the S-pen, the design, and the software (OneUI) are a few of the factors that made me ditch the pixel 7pro(which probably has the same software experience with nothing phone) to get the S23 Ultra.
Pen is the most awesome feature of this phone. 2:57. why is it not useful? The day I started using Note series (Note 3), I couldn't use non-pen phones as my daily driver even though I tried many in between which experience like lost a hand. People who used the pen would agree with me that there we have an extra hand whenever we need.!
I am extremely impressed with s23 ultra this year. It's a serious upgrade not visually but everywhere else compared to even last year s22 and thanks for sharing your perspective
*To compete with Apple from the Android side, you gotta make Sammy look bad.* In reality, it would be a great achievement if NP2 can even offer 50% of what S23U has. Cheers 🥂
Very biased take on the samsung S23 ultra ! Dude just pointed out the specs that make the phone more special than the nothing phone ( camera, software, design, S pen ) and made them look like a set back. And the price comparison isn’t fair cause we’re talking about a flagship with high end specs versus a mid phone filled with software bugs and a low mid camera. (Iphone user)
It depends on Chip bruh even Xiaomi 13 pro doesn't have it because it's not properly optimised. If you really want that feature properly only iPhone is your option
Look wise S22 and S23 are similar but there is a huge improvement under that glass panel. The new SD chip, optimisation are next level. The best smartphone right now in the market.
On a side note, i think maybe you guys can start a podcast with Carl about the tech world perceived through the eyes of a company. I get it tho, the idea of a podcast might sound like a hassle considering there a way too many tech related podcasts already out there like the waveform by mkbhd but i just wanna hear my man carl's perspective on the tech world. Like what goes through behind the scenes of a company's decision of making certain products and his experience so far with nothing. Also a big reason for this would be that i adore Carl man, he's a great and honest guy, watching him in your videos is always a joy and I'd gladly wish for more of that. Great video guys
Appreciate how he acknowledged Samsung's contributions. Samsung pushed the entire industry forward MULTIPLE TIMES throughout smartphone history. They even made the first mainstream wireless earbuds and also normalised big phones. Now they're continuing that legacy with foldables. ✨
Are you talking about AirPod style wireless? The first ones came from Japanese company Onkyo in September of 2015. First mainstream? I’m pretty sure they didn’t get mainstream success like the AirPods did. I’d say those were the first really mainstream ones. First foldable commercially available was from the Chinese company Royole in November of 2018
The only reason I ALWAYS buy Samsung is software. I used to have s2 s4 then s7 edge, then because of price I went to A series, A71, A72 then I was like wtf, I tried s22+ and to this day I'm baffled at how amazingly good Samsung phones are and how much they get better and better over the years. I've tried many other phones but Samsungs software, UI and other features are mandatory for me. I don't need to have the top smartphones (like the A series, which I loved BTW!), I just want to have an amazing experience. And now, that software support has FINALLY reached the level it should have from the beginning, I dare to say it's no wonder Apple is declining and is only a superior choice in the US, and the rest of the world is purely Android dominant.
When it comes to apps, I actually really like some of Samsung apps (for example: Phone, Internet, Gallery, Music) and I use them daily. I am glad Samsung provides alternative to Google. But apps like FB shoudnt be preinstalled.
When we use OneUI, it is more about the wide range of customisability found, the base OS does look a bit clunky at times, but customising it is a joy. Also I do have to admit that Samsung has improved a lot from the Touchwiz or Samsung Experience UI days
A technical person and someone that pays attention to details would know that the upgrade from s22 to s23 is nearly equal to a 2-generational leap. What would you say about Apple that mostly upgrade only the internals of the iPhones? Samsung did the same and it's not enough? Hmm. Really use the s23 ultra and experience the perfect synergy between software and hardware. It's the best phone out right now in my opinion. No other phone manufacturer managed to tailor their software to work with large screen the way Samsung has. What can I say, Huawei CEO called the iPhone the best phone years ago too, so...
Apple also includes all their apps like facetime, imessage, notes etc so that is also bloatware as you consider manufacturer apps (samsung apps ) as bloatware iphone is dominating only in USA and may be a little in EU.
Great review. Samsung DEX is a great feature where you don't need to lug a laptop around and get basic productivity tasks completed. Also the s-pen can be used as a remote shutter button, but the biggest thing for me is the improved battery life from s22 ultra to the s23 ultra.
I had the Exynos S22 and was really disappointed with performance and battery life, upgraded to the SD S23 and was blown away by the improvements. Really hope Samsung stick with SD in the future.
Soft touch for CrApple, Bashing review for Galaxy. First you make a phone without bugs Carl. i was planning to buy a Nothing phone (1) in last december but changed mind because of the bugs and crappy camera. and waited for S23 series to come. Bought a S23 Plus and super happy now.
Interesting input. Kinda agree with S3 which was so nice in hand, afterwards that same feel of Samsung kinda vanished in terms of design. The thing is today, it just work for most people (who as you said don't think too much about details). And soon I think with the ecosystem they work on (including their preinstalled apps) they will gain even more market share, because people are going to be too lazy to switch to another one after they learn how it works. They are still kings of android phone market. Next review I would like to see is Pixel 7 Pro or 6a (similar pricing as Nothing Phone 1) because they should have best android experience on the market, from software side. And than how Nothing OS overlay over it and pros and cons between each others, that would be super interesting. Keep up the good work. ✌
I am sure Carl did not spend enough time on S23 Ultra hence his software remark is unrealistic. The One UI is the best custom Android OS and well optimized. I found S-pen very useful for me. As a creative artist, I use Spen a lot. It's a daily tool for me. I agree with Carl on one point Samsung push bloatware a lot even in flagship premium device, it should not have happened
As a user of S Pen myself, it is one of the best thing happened to Mobile Phones. It's uses are just mind blowing.. Given that you start using it And about the price of S23 Ultra, dude just launched Nothing 2 for $600 & if it had 8Gen2 & 4 Camera's it would have been $900. Even then it would be missing S Pen & that brilliant display of S23 Ultra. Come on Carl you can't be comparing SD778 with SD 8Gen2.
His criticisms of the S23U aren't without merit and I agree with many of them. My only thing is time will tell when Nothing releases their own flagship sometime this year and how that will compare with the Pixel 8 Pro (later this year), iPhone 15 Pro and S23U. Bookmark this video to come back to when their flagship releases to hold Carl to his criticisms.
That spen's been a life saver for me. I use it almost every single day. It cannot replace a paper and pen. But you cannot carry them and write at every situation. The only thing that I hate is the removal of SD card. BTW I am still on the note 9 😅
I don't use the S pen to jot down notes but I do find myself using it for its other features such as extracting texts and translating just by hovering the S pen over the text, editing photos, signing PDFs and documents etc and its remote control functions are pretty useful too.
I think there are a number of differences but they become noticeable if your coming from the s22 more. Granted most of the changes come from the processor change especially for us in the UK.
I understand that there are way too many pre-installed apps however, when a consumer buys a Samsung phone, they know that they invested in using their features. I personally find most of the Samsung alternative apps compared to Google's to be considerably more nicer to use with better features.
Come on Carl, you're bashing Samsung for having the same design as last year, but in the iPhone review you didn't mention a single thing about the iPhone's 4 year old design.
I don't think Carl Pei would tell the fact that it the only phone in the world that can handle upto 8Gbps of network speed, something even apple was deemed incapable of doing recently in the fastest Wi-Fi show in dubai
Still depends on the country you are in. Some countries require you to ensure both the parties have their consent on being recorded, so phone companies just disable call recording feature altogether via software update to comply with laws.
True. Thats the only feature that is keeping me from choosing the Pixel 7 over S23+. I want to get Pixel 7 to continue my collection from my nexus days but call recording is just that 1 feature I don’t want to miss out on.
There is no doubt about that Nothing is offering good software support as a new company but I think it will be difficult for nothing to beat SAMSUNG. I like the design and build quality of Samsung(S23 ultra). Again one UI is lighter and more polished then before although samsung should remove the bloatwars form their flagship product.
Idk why a lot of people say there is bloatware. I think it's because most people are addicted to Google products. Which is not a good thing and a monopoly. If you do not like any app that is pre-loaded to Samsung Devices you can always uninstall it.
@@MiguelY22 No, like one plus has had a good amount of financial backing from their parent companies, and had more resources when it comes to production and testing the phone, Nothing have a comparatively smaller number of people in the management.
06:19 yes, then what progress do we have with Iphone13 and Iphone14(not D-island) and how many phone2 can be bought for 1 S23U. When comes to s/w Samsung's OneUI is best even better than pixelUI in some aspects.

Oh poor little boo boo, did he not praise your beloved phone of choice enough or something? He literally said it's one of the best phones out there right now
He knows Nothing is not going to be competing against iPhones or iOS. So while he builds his humble and honest image by praising Apple, he puts Samsung down in the most subtle way without really knowing too much about the full S23 Ultra capabilities. Clever.
While the S-Pen isn't for everyone, I think it's existence is critical for the smartphone industry. The S23 Ultra is the face of stylus input on smartphones now that the Note line has been retired, which in itself may have been a risk. For those consumers who don't use the S-Pen, using that space for additional storage or battery may be more valuable. Imagine if consumer's had the option to choose between a S23 Ultra with a Stylus or S23 Ultra with an SD Card slot/bigger battery. There are still users out there looking for both implementations in a phone, and the S-Pen remains a distinguishing feature for Samsung in a sea of similar smartphones.
Have you considered partnering with the Graphene OS team? This in my opinion would be a compelling reason to switch over to Nothing. Graphene are strongly focused on privacy and security.
IMO that would be a death knell for Nothing. Now make it an option, that would be cool but likely more than Nothing wants to put into from a dev perspective at this point.
@@rubberonasphalt the main reason google tensor is on a google phone is because it is designed to be in a google(pixel) phone and it will underperform if used on other phones because of compatibility issues. Plus i dunno if google would allow it lol
At 2:09, you said the fruit company pays attention to their design. Also later in the video, you discussed that their isnt any major differentiating factor between S22 ultra and S23 ultra. Since iphone 11, they havent changed their design and the difference between 13 series and 14 series isnt major other than the island. Nothing being a brand who understands design should have said this. All good but these factors just not good.

Reason samsung kept their Software similar from ages..it makes it easier for him. He loves the One UI layout, calling recording feature and especially after sales service..Samsung Service centers are available in almost every 50-70Km. They are best when it comes to service centers. It hardly takes 1-2 days to fix problems whereas any other brands take 7-10 days..Brands like Google, Asus and Moto it takes almost 2-3 weeks to get fixed.
Do agree about the upgrade, had a Note 20 Ultra and going to S23 Ultra one massive upgrade was battery life, brighter screen and slightly better gaming performance. But day to day usage is pretty much the same
I feel like Samsung have at least learned some valuable lessons, the S23 Ultra doesn't look like much of a different phone to the S22 Ultra, but its better in practically every possible way. Better speakers, refined display, significantly better optimisation and battery life etc. It's an absolute winner if you want a no compromise experience. I also believe there's still a big market for the Nothing phone, so here's to the continued success of these lovely devices.
Loved this video. BTW, Carl doesn't seem like a poweruser. That pen is really useful. Other than taking notes and signing some documents, I am using it for editing photos and cropping stuff from photos, even taking screenshots with smartselect. He obviously didn't use this phone at its maximum potential. BTW, I hope he will make a review to Galaxy Z Fold 5 when it gets released.
Samsung S23 comes with 4 major updates and 5 years of security updates, this was one of the major reasons why I decided for first time to get a Samsung flagship.
That is intresting, but i also think that ths s pen is something that differenciate the phone and make it more useful for those momments in wich you will need it, and the design should be iterative in order to compete with iphone and in the premium market, because users dont have to scratch their heads sbout the design and ask themselves if they like it more than lther phones but instead they just go for the phone knowing it is a familiar design
I recently got the ultra , came from S21 plus , originally was thinking of getting s23 plus but had the mentality of go big or go home so yea ended up getting the ultra. Not really a fan of the pen as well but machine was alright tbh. Money wise it was kinda steep but jumping from plus series to a first ultra version seem like a good idea and I have no regrets about getting the ultra. plus side, s24 series are being made now so most likely when they get released next year or whenever , ill grab myself a plus :D
Carl's opinion regarding S-pen made me wonder how does he feel about Kindle Scribe/Remarkable 2, i.e. whether those devices give him the same feeling as regular pen and paper.
Those pre installed apps you see are kinda useful. People who buy a Samsung ultra, majorly are already into the Samsung ecosystem. The Samsung watch and it's apps are pre installed. Their buds related apps are installed. Their tv related, health app related. The Google apps.
Carl annoys me. He nitpicks at crap. If he would have actually tech reviewed the S22 and S23 Ultra, he would have saw the massive difference. This strategy is very clever by Carl I’d say. Many people say that he’s really humble and down to earth (which he is) and other companies would never say good things about a rival brand, blah blah blah.

I love the dex and it's crazy when samsung change their design every two year or so and others doing the same for 7years
It looks outdated for sure
bad idea, you really should've just bought a Pixel 7 Pro... One UI is an absolute mess, and while it may seem like the opposite right now, years down the line you'll notice how overrated Samsung is
@@zellzoii I gave the pixel up for the iPhone. One u.i has been the most comfortable, sensible u.i I've used. Pixel has nothing new, using the pixel felt like an s21.... most of the Android 13 "updates" I already had on my s21u...... including there biggest feature removing objects from the picture all old features.

Ahhh you know the market pretty well ✌
Most people have no idea what the "Nothing phone" is though. It's only us tech enthusiasts who watch these types of videos that know.
So much Sarcasm in this video but we can see your Bullshit..

I don't think he spent much time with the s23 ultra because otherwise he would have noticed that the software, especially the way it's designed is perfectly for a device this size. The multitasking is superior compared to other devices and they done a great job with optimising everything on the screen so that you can control it better with one hand.

And coming to the software part, OneUI is amazing. It's really well optimised, and has very smooth animations this time (coming from the s23 ultra user). It also has a lot of features which each individual can tweak according to their liking.

Spen was a reason I stuck with my Note when they didnt announce a note, its probably one of the most useful features. For the feel, I understand.
Appreciate how he acknowledged Samsung's contributions.
Samsung pushed the entire industry forward MULTIPLE TIMES throughout smartphone history. They even made the first mainstream wireless earbuds and also normalised big phones. Now they're continuing that legacy with foldables. ✨
Absolutely
Agree, i use Samsung apps for work and google apps for personal life, so much easier.
1:46 The images on screen specifically prove his point wrong, showing how Samsung is making recognisable and unique looking fridges, TVs and phones 😂
Ikr 😂 those products are so recognizable

Given that you start using it
And about the price of S23 Ultra, dude just launched Nothing 2 for $600 & if it had 8Gen2 & 4 Camera's it would have been $900.
Noted am on you on that.
That spen's been a life saver for me. I use it almost every single day. It cannot replace a paper and pen. But you cannot carry them and write at every situation. The only thing that I hate is the removal of SD card. BTW I am still on the note 9 😅
hah, me too, changed the battery two times already.
I don't use the S pen to jot down notes but I do find myself using it for its other features such as extracting texts and translating just by hovering the S pen over the text, editing photos, signing PDFs and documents etc and its remote control functions are pretty useful too.
Carl is a really cool and humble CEO, and thank you for the creative team in front of and behind these fun videos.
I think there are a number of differences but they become noticeable if your coming from the s22 more. Granted most of the changes come from the processor change especially for us in the UK.
Change is more specially for the rest of the world with the Qualcomm 8 gen 1 is a huge improvement
I understand that there are way too many pre-installed apps however, when a consumer buys a Samsung phone, they know that they invested in using their features. I personally find most of the Samsung alternative apps compared to Google's to be considerably more nicer to use with better features.
Samsung Internet for example is the best browser on mobile

While the S-Pen isn't for everyone, I think it's existence is critical for the smartphone industry. The S23 Ultra is the face of stylus input on smartphones now that the Note line has been retired, which in itself may have been a risk. For those consumers who don't use the S-Pen, using that space for additional storage or battery may be more valuable.
Imagine if consumer's had the option to choose between a S23 Ultra with a Stylus or S23 Ultra with an SD Card slot/bigger battery.

Nothing OS Is the nearest stock android experience. And yes it's smooth and clean.
Do agree about the upgrade, had a Note 20 Ultra and going to S23 Ultra one massive upgrade was battery life, brighter screen and slightly better gaming performance. But day to day usage is pretty much the same
This is the first review of you I’d watch and I’m not fully on the same page with you but nevertheless nice one
I also believe there's still a big market for the Nothing phone, so here's to the continued success of these lovely devices.
they did a engine upgrade that snap dragon 8 gen 2 made a huge deference for performance and battery
Make a video on the pixel 7 pro carl
Love your way of demonstrating things
Loved this video. BTW, Carl doesn't seem like a poweruser. That pen is really useful. Other than taking notes and signing some documents, I am using it for editing photos and cropping stuff from photos, even taking screenshots with smartselect. He obviously didn't use this phone at its maximum potential. BTW, I hope he will make a review to Galaxy Z Fold 5 when it gets released.
Literally I'm waiting for this from last 2 months.
I think you should consider something similar to DEX.
I was laughing so hard when he said s23 ultra is not much of an upgrade from s22 ultra, considering what the upgrade was from ear(1) to ear(2)
Comparing phones to earbuds doesn't make sense.
@@keonxd8918 lol
They're tech companies
@@capricornuse7171 what much can you update about earphones huh?
@@keonxd8918 the price hike wasn't fair for the upgrades
Ear(1) was ₹6500, ear(2) is ₹10000
@@keonxd8918tuning, driver, codecs to name a few
saying the s pen isnt useful ,,,how about the LEDs on the nothing phone?
Now a days all are eyes on samsung samsung samsung 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
All I want to hear is "nothing CEO announces Nothing phone 2
Carl's opinion regarding S-pen made me wonder how does he feel about Kindle Scribe/Remarkable 2, i.e. whether those devices give him the same feeling as regular pen and paper.
He's not being honest.
Samsung latest design of S23 ultra is the best, it gives it a unique and recognizable look
Dude pls review Pixal 6A vs Nothing phone 1.
We need it.
If anything he is going to wait for the 7a to come out because its coming out soon
he will never compare to pixel A series, his phone will not compare
his phone falls in the same price range and wont compare to that at the same price
Nothing 2 will be released same day on iPhone15 release..
Those pre installed apps you see are kinda useful. People who buy a Samsung ultra, majorly are already into the Samsung ecosystem. The Samsung watch and it's apps are pre installed. Their buds related apps are installed. Their tv related, health app related. The Google apps.
Carl is my second favourite Tech Tuber after MKHBHD. What a gem of a personality.
Carl annoys me. He nitpicks at crap. If he would have actually tech reviewed the S22 and S23 Ultra, he would have saw the massive difference.
Then commenting on the same design from the prev gen, but the nothing phone 1 and 2 look alike 😂.
Also folks literally love Samsung for the Spen and their software.
Plus im pretty sure an Spen is more useful then some lights on the back of the phone 😂😂😂.
