  • I got a Pentax HD FA 31mm f1.8 Limited to test from the Italian Pentax importer FOWA and I tried it with the Pentax KF, Pentax K1-MkII and Mz-S with the Ferrania P30 film.
    This lens has personality.

I have been using Pentax DSLR's for 15 years and I have the K1 MKII Kp all K3 bodies except the monochrome body, I also have some older bodies back to the K 100D super. A host of Pentax and Sigma glass but my favorites are the limited edition prime lenses the 31 and 77mm I have used for event photography and had great results on both full frame and APSC cameras.

Excellent video, and I'm so glad I stumbled upon your channel. I searched for a review of this lens. It's wonderful that you covered the sharpness at all f-stops; that was really helpful. I'm mostly interested in how it would perform for B&W landscapes, but it sounds like it would work very well. Cheers!

Thank you! Glad you enjoyed the video.
I was doing some photographs today in an airport and at the end I used only the 31mm... kind of more I use it and more I like it!

Thanks for this review. I am considering getting this lens. I am currently shooting almost exclusively with the SMC Pentax-FA 35mm F2 AL which is sometimes called the poorman's 31 limited. I shoot on ASP-C. I really like the 35 mm, I have the non-HD version that I picked up for $170 and it's very nice. I'd love to compare the two lenses, there is quite a debate about it in the Pentax forums.

I don't have one to compare. But I can say you the old M 35mm f2.8 is quite good...

    Hello Luigi,
Thank you very much for this review. I have this lens and I'm a bit disapointed with it.
I confess that I get better result with my cheap Pentax-A SMC 28mm f2.8. But it's perhaps my fault not using the 31mm the right way
You hadn't speak about the chromatic aberration. For me it's the main flaw of this lens. Have you a way to avoid this problem?
And what about the autofocus precision with a K1? The screwdriving AF is not accurate so I prefer be in manual focusing with liveview
    Give me your advice please

      Thanks.
The chromatic aberrations with this lens are a strange thing. I have them only with fine object like branches, in front of very bright lights and they vary a lot based on the algorithm used for the RAW conversion. I'm doing some tests and try to learn better the conversion process because if I take the picture with pixel shift, so without the need to invent the colors from the bayern pattern, a lot of problems like the chromatic aberrations and some lack of sharpness disappear.
I really start to think the Bayern pattern really sucks in general...
As I said in the video the lens is not a precise analytic lens but it has its personality. Sometime personality is something you like or hate.
For the focus I had no problem with this lens. I did some test with a target and was all ok.
Something I suggest is to buy a target to adjust the focus point for every lens you have. I had to do that with all my cameras, Canon and Pentax. Some lenses are very precise out of the box other needed fine focus tuning.
It does not happen in live view or with mirrorless because the focus is checked directly on the sensor, but it happens with reflex cameras.
My suggestion is to keep the 31mm away for a while, then come back to it for some specific subject (ambient portrait is the perfect one), use it for a while and decide. You will love or hate it, in the first case keep it, in the second sell it. It has a lot of personality... you can be compatible or not and there is nothing wrong with that.

Interesting to know. I am considering getting the 31 mm to replace my SMC Pentax-FA 35mm F2 AL. I really like which is similar to the SMC 28mm f2.8. Some people say the 35 mm gives 90% of the results of the 31, whatever that means. I considered getting the 28 mm which would be 42 mm on Asp-c.

@@hanumanguy I don't have the 28 or 35 in modern version, I hope someone here in the comment have them and will give you his/her opinion.
I have the 35 and 28 in M version and both are good, 28 with some limits on the corners but perfect on Aps-c
