Me, too. I’m 60, and only really got into makeup during 2020, when I was not working and had lots of time, and discovered TH-cam, where I learned a lot about how to choose and apply makeup. But I live in Florida - a lot of the native born Floridians just aren’t into makeup, and the transplant retirees are just done with it. I don’t care - I’m not the only one where I work who wears makeup, but the only other woman who does is 2nd generation Cuban.

I don't wear makeup everyday but I definitely do if I'm leaving the house. I am home most of the time in comfy lounge wear & no makeup, when I leave the house I want to be dressed & have on makeup. I don't care that everyone else is bare faced & wearing bike shorts with tank tops & flipflops. Not my vibe. I want to wear the beautiful clothes & makeup I have invested $$$ on.

It might only get used once that week, so it's more products being used, just less often. I have on more to add - "Gift With Purchase". Ulta does a lot of "free gift with any $X purchase" and I am a sucker for those. I know that they most give sample sizes, which are hardly worth the value they ascribe to those gifts, but I still fall for them. In fairness though, I've discovered some of my favorite products across all categories from those gifts, and have also enjoyed the smaller sizes for when I've traveled. But.. I still spend too much just to get the free gift with purchase. It's a real problem.

I really wish that more companies would make travel sized products or allowed us to buy sample cards. It would save them millions of dollars in returns and allow us to try multiple products with less risk. But I also found that sometimes that sample card of a cream blush ends up being better than the stick blush. It's usually more emollient. But at least I can figure out which color works best.

I absolutely love makeup, I love wearing makeup, I love experimenting with makeup, and I prefer the way I look in makeup... and all of the women I'm friends with just don't. They think I'm a bit crazy for "doing my face" before I leave the house and sometimes it makes me self-conscious, but at the same time I sometimes look at them and think, "Just a little lipstick, bronzer, etc. would make a world of difference". To each their own, I guess. (Oh... and I love glitter on my eyelids, because they're really hooded and adding that little bit of light makes my eyes pop.)

I lost my mom this year. I've always loved makeup, but I think I really fell into buying products to help make me feel better. I realized what I was doing, and I've really realized what colors/tones look best on me. I overhauled my collection to my taste now. I'm a sahm to a 2yr old and 4yr old. Before they wake up, I love sitting at my vanity and put my makeup on. I live in middle of nowhere Minnesota. I feel like I'm overly done up a lot... but as a part of my therapy, putting on makeup really does help me feel better about myself. Also, a ton of foundations or base products lean yellow on me (cool, pink undertone). A lavender powder has helped cut the yellow (if you don't want to mix a blue color corrector or if you don't have time but love the formula/finish, etc). Love your videos, Jen!

I got rid of sooo many items -- some that I truly love -- because they are "fantasy self" buys. Colorful eyeshadows, shadows with glitter, things I bought because they were new, things I just don't wear. I will pass many of them along to friends who will enjoy them. Sometimes when I am decluttering and feel regret about the money I have spent, I remind myself that the money is gone, and keeping things in my collection unworn does not change that. My lashes are long, and I have very oily skin, so I have to powder my undereyes *and* my browbone (my lashes can brush the skin on my browbones area). But with the powdering and the waterproof mascara as the top layer, I rarely get any kind of smudging. Bonus: my mascara holds up no matter the weather I'm out in!

Jen, at 72 years young I plead guilty of several of these offenses🤪🤪 I can’t tell you how many times I have tried a type of lipstick, blush, powder, etc and been dissatisfied….only to realize I had been down that same road (different brand) a few times before. I do think we need to know what really works for and enhances us. Makeup is still so much fun to try, but I too now often decide that something very similar is already in my stash and not to fall for a review, packaging, hype, etc. Thanks for all you do for this community, but mostly for your kind way and honesty.🥰💄

This is so relatable!! This past year I’ve gotten a lot more conscious of what I’m buying and why I’m buying it regarding makeup. For example I’ve come to learn I’m always gonna be a matte or natural finish girl, the dewy stuff is just not for me no matter how much it’s trending. And with backups I totally get what you’re saying. I only get backups on powder, mascara, and eyeliner that I know for certain I’m going to use up.

That's was so good! So much truth, thank you! This takes me back to when I started watching beauty youtubers years ago. I was so excited to watch the reviews on products to try to figure out what would work for me and help me save money by not making spending mistakes. At that time I never realized how easily influenced I could be. I thought if someone I trusted said something was good then I would agree with them no doubt. It took time and trial and error to learn what my own preferences are and what works for me in my lifestyle. I realize now that making mistakes is part of that journey. I just hope not to make these mistakes again and to learn from them instead

For me, I find that cool based fuchsia leaning blue purple toned blushes are some of the only ones that will appear to be a true, cool pink on my very cool toned, fair skin tone. I can relate to buying so called cool toned pink blushes and lipsticks that look very peach! It’s really interesting how one person can think something is cool toned but on me, it’s straight up orange! The NYX Butter Blush in My Butta Half and RMS Beauty blush in Bermuda Rose look very bright in the pan but they blend out so beautifully and give that cool toned tone pop! I love these two! I have a few other cool toned more neutral blushes, but those tend to lean towards mauve, instead of that pure, bright pink that we all crave sometimes!
Blush is a lot more complicated than I imagined- but I finally think I have found cool toned options for a neutral look, a bright pop of pure color or a natural look. In each category I have at least a few! Loving the blush life lately!

Love this... it's so much about learning to know yourself and your own preferences/needs and just being true to that. Though it may take a lot of sampling before you figure it out 😁 Speaking of sampling, one thing I have liked about samples is that it's helpful to really get an idea of how long it takes to use something up. A sample bottle of perfume or shampoo or cleanser isn't a single 'serving'. For me it helped me understand how long it would reasonably take me to use up a full sized product, and helped with reducing the impulse to buy another and another...

It took me years to realize that I don’t like most lip products or foundations. I kept trying new ones thinking the right formula would magically change my mind, but I hate being able to feel stuff on my face/lips. It always felt weird to admit that because those are staples of so many people’s makeup routine. But I now know that I have like 3 lipstick formulas that I don’t hate and the occasional tinted moisturizer to just even out my skin tone a bit. No matter how pretty it looks on a TH-camr, I know that lip gloss or full-coverage foundation will just be a sensory nightmare for me and it’s an easy pass.

I literally just cancelled my Boxycharm subscription yesterday. I realized I haven’t gotten one item I’ve loved or could even use in about a year. I end up posting them on Poshmark for a fraction of what I paid, or giving them away for free, or Storting them away thinking I’ll use it later. I love getting that cute pink box in the mail but all excitement wains after the first 60 seconds when I realize I’ve wasted another $38 on stuff I can’t use.
I’m also proud that even though I’ve been waiting for the new Givenchy powder to be released today, I only bought the mini size and not the full size. I have a full and mini size of the original, and it does not work for me, so I used some restraint and bought the mini only in hopes the new formula will work for me, without having FOMO of not having the full size. Makeup is so fun but you have to be smart, especially in this recent world of influencers, social media, and FOMO.

Thank you so much for this video. I love de-influencing makeup. I have a HUGE makeup collection and have recently been purging everything that doesn’t work for me or I just don’t reach for. I’ve wasted sooo much money on stuff that’s not used. My daughter took some of it, but a lot ended up in the trash and it’s sad how much I’ve wasted. I’ve realized that I have a VERY warm olive skin tone, and even though cool tones are very trendy, popular and beautiful, they just don’t work for me. So I can no longer buy a cool toned palette no matter what. All cool tones look grey on me and do not look like the pan at all. I’ve learned!! I’m done buying eyeshadow palettes and blushes except in my personal very specific shades now! I’m learning about color analysis and my “personal palette” of favorite shades that actually look good on me is very small, but I’m excited about how much money I’m going to save, and I know that I will always look good from now on. 😊

Before I found out I was extremely cool toned and muted/desaturated, I would buy things I saw that looked pretty and I thought I’d really like based on the look of them or hearing about them. But, since I’ve found out what works well for me, it’s helped me so much! It can stink sometimes because there’s not a ton of options that fit my specific wants BUT that saves me money too AND when I DO find things that actually do fit my specific wants I get so excited! Unlike before when 99% of the time I’d be so disappointed because it would look awful on me or the shade would look completely different on me because of my cool/desaturated skin!
For foundations not matching, it’s pretty rare for me to find a perfect match that’s fair enough, cool enough, and muted. I’ve only found 2 perfect matches. Some that are close but not perfect. I'm much happier with single shadows because of the customization. There is a lot of good advice in this video! Just give me a little lipstick, blush, eyeshadow, mascara, and a little brow wiz, and I'm golden.

Great content! I have a select few creators that I feel like we have a similar agenda, I look to you and the handful of other creators I follow to guide me in purchase. I am a bartender who loves makeup, but I do not have the luxury of spending Tom Ford prices without an endorsement from trusted creator, with that said a few things do not apply to me like having back ups, but what resonates with me is the hype purchase. I get so excited for a product, put it in my cart and if I am able to go a week and not purchase, its about the noise and not the desire. Thank you Jen, I love how you go from color pop to Denona with honest thoughts!

I have a PS to my long post below, I forgot the main message. Jen your points in this video really hit home and gave me ideas and guidelines to overcome my addiction. Thanks so much. I appreciate you so much and will still be watching regularly. You offer so much more than other influencers. Bless you. ❤

Just don’t buy high end and you don’t have to worry about buying the dupes!! Or just watch videos before buying things!

    Great video. Thanks!
One way I keep from regretting my purchases is to only buy one color of a product. If I find that I love it, I can buy more colors or finishes later.
Not listening to my intuition about a product is invariably a mistake as is discounting past negative experience with a product or brand.
Whenever I don’t read the label first, I risk getting something I’m going to react badly to or can’t try let alone use.

I have permabanned several brands both high-end and drugstore with mishaps relating to even just one of their products. Saves me a lot of money and trouble (Rimmel's Scandaleyes mascara sent me to ER, never again)

I was nodding along to every single point. I remember making a video chatting about taking advice from people who don’t share your preferences/style/skin tone, but you brought up a lot more good points. Great video, Jen - thank you!

When all of my makeup went up in smoke, I over bought because I didn’t have a clear idea of what I wanted and needed. It wouldn’t be so bad if I knew people that I could give the makeup to when I got something that didn’t work for me but I knew would work for someone.
One practice I adopted long ago is sticking with what I know works until it doesn’t anymore or is discontinued. It’s fun (or annoying) to find a replacement, but it can be an opportunity to explore the available options if you are so inclined, have the resources, and it’s important to you. Also, if you don’t use or need a type of product very often, why have multiple choices? A drawer full of blush is pretty but completely impractical if you rarely wear blush.

What helps is looking through my makeup and asking myself how many times I've used each shade or done the looks i thought I'd get out of them. Usually it's a wake up call. What do I wear the most? You can get inspired to try new things sometimes or challenge yourself to try using every shade of a thing you have. I do love some colors so much, but do i want them on my lips or eyes? Or do i maybe want it in a garment instead? Or decor? Nail polish? Because not everything needs to be on my face lol

I completely agree with you on everything - I made all the mistakes: backups that have expired; sale items I would not pay FP on; hyped/FOMO items that didn’t suit me; etc. Great advice!

Thanks for this video! I have so much makeup that I got out of curiosity and recommendations from youtubers. Now I'm taking that step back and using what I have :)

this is such a great video idea! Totally agree on these points. At first, I did buy different products just to experiment, but once I learned what I like, I don't buy, even though I get tempted (e.g., cool toned palettes. They look beautiful, but those shades make me look like a zombie!)

I feel so convicted. 😂 I do every one of these things, and I know better. 🤦🏻‍♀️ As Alice in Wonderland said, “I give myself very good advice, but I very seldom follow it.”
Thanks for the reminder to do better! ❤

Definitely agree with the subscription boxes! So much that I have given away from the boxes. Decided to unsubscribe and now put that money towards splurge luxury makeup. Much happier with this decision

I started following Christina Mychas about six months before I started following you. I agree she has great content, as do her fellow podcasters Alyssa Beltempo and Signe from Use Less. I did a "Low Buy July" inspired by you and my credit score went up 30 points in 3 weeks! When I'm tempted to buy a back-up, a dupe, or the latest thing, I make myself toss something I already have - whether it's clothing, makeup or home decor. It makes me really question how badly I need it. I'm a CT girl too, but it seems most of the US is still in super casual mode. Sometimes you've just got to wear what makes you happy!
