Great stuff mate! Some real good pointers. I'm making a tub for the koi at the moment to save the eggs of the big pond at work. The fish manage to eat all the eggs or fry that spawn from them. Hopefully I will manage to save some of them...

Will there ever be a time where you have two males that show what looks like spawning behavior? I recently adopted two shubunkins from my mom she was keeping in a 20 gallon with a couple koi for a couple months, which all came from petsmart. while she had them, i looked to see if they showed tubercles on their gill plates which they both did equally. ( i never noticed them on the pectorals just the face ) one of the koi was visibly female with protruding vent, idk if that would have triggered the tubercles to become visible...?
Since moving them into my 40 gallon, they've suddenly both started acting odd on a daily basis, one is chasing the other around quite a lot, its mostly one sided, and occasionally the one i would assume is female pushes back and they sort of twirl around each other. this very much looks like breeding behavior to me, but they at one point both had visible tubercles ( currently don't see them on either ) I'm wondering if its because there's no female to go after or if its aggression, or if i do in fact have a male and female. they both have somewhat similar body shapes and the " female " doesn't appear to have a super prominent vent or protruding abdomen, although to be fair, all petsmart fish come emaciated and they're only just getting to be a healthy thick weight. one also has longer fins than the other ( " male " has long, " female " has shorter less flowy more firm caudal ) and "female" has a slightly shorter rounder face, but i assume those bits are just random genetics.
the " female " kind of escapes the other one, but always runs right back to him after a few seconds. I thought they were both male, but the behavior is odd.

I've kept fish all my life. In my pond l have a stunning Shubunkin and its the biggest l have ever seen by a mile. Must weigh over a pound and a foot long. Had it about 8 years. Its fat as a pig. I hardly feed them much. But have a bog garden at one side so they will be eating all the newts and what have you.
