You know I took voice lessons as a kid and I started singing again and I was trying to figure out why sometimes it feels like it sounds better when I'm not with pressing on my diaphragm, and you just answered the question. This is genius. Thank you so much!
I remember seeing a ted-talk by an opera singer who got like 2-3 lung transplants, and she basically explained that you should brace the sides a bit and breathe down. It was a while ago so I don't remember exactly what she said, so it was great to see some dedicated exercises for this kind of breathing. Great vid!
This is my first time on your channel, and when you said, "Breathe through your butt," I was on the floor ready to learn and ended up choking from laughter. Thank you, day made 😂😂😂
"Breathing through the butt" made me feel like I was grounded and rooted into the floor,, while at the same time I felt like I was being propelled up and out through the roof. I've subscribed to your channel because I enjoy the way that you teach.
so grateful for this! i always had issues with breath control and this is changing everything. cannot wait to dive into your other videos! everytime i had to take a breath in between phrases i squeezed ! awesome support, no vocal strain and no abs pain and tension on jaw and belly. Thank you love!
So…. You actually answered some general health questions that were floating in the back of my mind by suggesting the pelvic the floor. Thank you so much
OMG yes lol. It was one of the most confusing things I had to learn about singing. Thank you for addressing this! Since learning to do it right, I’m still entertained at activating these specific muscles in isolation of the other muscles because it’s a new feeling. I found the sensation when leaning with my stomach against the kitchen counter and resisting it. Those muscles.
you do a great job demonstrating! I really like your gentle approach. my observation that I found interesting-the bracing you describe not being fit for singing feels exactly the same as the bracing I felt doing these exercises. so I think it is one of those things that is different for everyone and not simply that the same bracing you do when lifting weights doesn’t work for singing. also I really enjoyed your warmups!
First time encounter. It was all totally new, and added another foundational block to the skills that I've already been building. I feel like I've just been given a key to the next level. Thanks!
Yes, I found holding my stomach in, restricted the flow of my breath...this allows for space within the body - just have to get used to it after years of conditioning. Thank you
This is a great lesson! Loved it, thank you. The last warm up was new for me and a challenge, I paused the video and worked on it for a while and it was fun, thank you.
I’ve never done a Kegle(correct spelling, idk?) in my life, I don’t understand “breathing in my butt”, but I did attempt it and definitely felt like it wasn’t a struggle to hold onto those long notes, so I think you’re onto something there, but being in my 40’s now I get pretty anxious about doing things incorrectly especially if they involve possible muscle strain because recuperation time is much longer than it used to be… great video, I’ll pursue this!
I watched the video through! I would suggest having the lapel mic pinned to your top so your hands are free to demonstrate, and to reduce the pops of breath and plosives.
@@TheSeeking2knowexactly! I didn’t wanna be insulting but I giggled at the part where you have to hold the mic made to be hands free. still staying and supporting it is great info!
Soundz good however from my “professional” 😂 experience I can say that once you find a balance in your voice the breath Sets up automatically and you simply breathe whenever it’s needed. I don’t think over complicating breath theory serves especially for beginners.
Really liked this lessons format and the info, excited to try this tomorrow. Any tips for someone with a lower louder voice who needs to be quiet and respect neighbors but now has a freaky psychological issue singing loud and out because of it?
If you try to suppress your voice you will create a ton of tension. Just sing out! Don’t do it at unreasonable hours so as not to bother your neighbors too much. If you still feel self conscious try singing with ear plugs @LiviaBrash has a great video on this
Spent years doing this too and am a naturally very loud singer! Learn to love your voice for all of its uniqueness and flaws, there is only ONE of you and there only ever will be!
Hi, nice video, finally someone explaining about the pelvic floor and singing. I just wanted to ask if the same method or principles apply to men? I hope it's not a stupid question.
This is a really interesting and helpful video, thanks! I just wanted to let you know though that those small types of microphones that you're using aren't made to be handheld, they're meant to go on your lapel or neck of your shirt! Just a thought cause your plosives and "th" sounds are really popping the microphone and my ears 😅 great video though!
Been singing for years and have quite a nice natural bass baritone but I have struggled with the whole ‘support’ issue my whole life. To many breath exercises to remember
I'm a vocalist. I am currently 3 months postpartum. I have three children. Each time I have been pregnant, I have been at my vocal best, and usually about 2-3 months postpartum (every time) I feel like I forget how to sing, loose myself vocally. Before this moment, watching your video, I have attributed pregnancy vocal awesomeness to increased feedback and in my torso as well as the effect of the relaxin hormone produced during pregnancy on my muscles mainly both vocal folds and tongue. Now I'm re-thinking everything from the context of thinking about my pelvic floor during pregnancy and post pregnancy. C-section delivery. Could you elaborate on this?
I wrote a bunch of theories about it but deleted them as I am unfortunately not qualified to speak on pregnancy and the voice. However I recommend looking at @voxyoga 's channel! She has a whole playlist on pregnancy and the voice that are worth checking out.
Your video prompted me to do some research on Kegel’s (at least for Men) and the Doctor I watched said even for Kegel endurance training, they never last longer than 4-6 seconds. Singing phrases can last 15-30 seconds or longer. I was curious about your thoughts on that? Thanks!
"As a beginner, should I pretend like I'm fogging up a mirror every time I sing to keep my breath steady and relaxed? Is this a good practice for every song, or should it only be used during certain exercises? I want to make sure I'm using the technique effectively without overdoing it."
Re another comment: “But sometimes our abs engage more days than others. Especially if you are a feminine person, the constant “sucking in” we subconsciously do creates tension. If you feel like your abs are still over activating, try it in a table top position or in a hip opening squat (malasana pose) to see if you can find a released core.”
You might feel a slight contraction however it should be the low abs and it should not be the focus! But sometimes our abs engage more days than others. Especially if you are a feminine person, the constant “sucking in” we subconsciously do creates tension. If you feel like your abs are still over activating. Try it in a table top position or in a hip opening squat (malasana pose) to see if you can find a released core.
Whaaaat? I’ve been singing my whole life and I’ve never been told to clench my abs while signing. Have I managed to avoid this odious advice by chance or do I just happen to be surrounded by sane singers?
Any real singer would know what she meant when she said pelvic floor. She’s teaching the biology part of singing which is so important. Better hearing that than a mf telling you its just a feeling
@eagles_s actually you think too much of your singing if you imagine it's a free concert I can listen to all the best singers in the world of past and present, so unless you are Pavarotti, Celine Dion or Maria Callas then a bit more humility is in order. Why would I waste my time on you? If you teach It is simply a proof that you can actually sing and this qualified to teach. Most TH-cam teachers can't sing.
To be honest, I would really caution against doing Kegels without being recommended to do them by a pelvic floor specialist. They can actually cause too much tension which can lead to pelvic floor dysfunction and they’re really only recommended for certain types of pelvic floor issues. In particular, relying on that for your singing technique seems not only dangerous because you would be tightening far too frequently and for far too long, but it’s also completely unnecessary. Breathing into your pelvic floor is fine but you can breathe in and hold and keep your pelvic floor totally relaxed while still supporting the breath. If I’m misunderstanding I apologize because I really hate to be that online pedantic commenter but then I worry about your viewers/students misunderstanding also and having to do pelvic floor PT like I did. Believe me you do NOT want to go and learn this the hard way!
This is true which is why the inhale is as important if not more than the “zip”, as the inhale releases the pelvic floor. If you don’t inhale then you are constantly zipping an already zipped pair of jeans which as you mentioned creates more tension, and from my stance, doesn’t create the fullest support. However if you are inhaling the way i instructed, then you are fully releasing the pelvic floor. As a vocal instructor I always say that you know your body better than i do. If something feels wrong or bad, stop. So for you if you don’t want to support your singers breath with a kegel then don’t, but i recommend it in order to achieve both a free and big sound.
Hey Lauren, first of all id like to thank you for giving us all these information for free, I really appreciate it a lot. I wanted to ask you since im not sure if I understood it exactly right, am I supposed to do the Kegel after blowing in? So is it breath in, Kegel, breath out, release Kegel and then repeat? Or do I do the Kegel while I breath in and hold it while I breath out? Also, when imagining im breathing through my butt wich btw, amazing love you for that, it kind of feels as if im pressing the Kegel out, is that correct too or should everything stay still down there while breathing in. This really seems to be helping me, I just want to make sure Im doing it right. Thank you so much for all of this, lots of love and thank you so much in advance
Breathing in should feel like your pelvic floor is expanding outward or releasing (everything should be relaxed) Breathing out should be a consistent kegel zip. It may take some practice to keep that Kegel consistent. If so, just be sure you’re doing it upon the initial exhale.
do i actually need to feel like clenching my butt hole when im thinking of supporting my breath? or the correct one is a different muscle coordinate? i was actually pushing my abs inward before when thinking of breath support but it didnt help. i knew it was wrong but it cant be helped, most vids bout support is focusing on abdomen/solar plexus, expanding or contracting. thanks!
Is using a normal straw, say from the drive thru w/my soft drink work just fine to use for the straw exercises? Trying to gauge how effective they are.
Yes. However I like to teach the breath support being super low so as not to encourage a “flexing” of the upper abs which creates too much tension. Your lower abs may engage, but don’t neglect the pelvic floor! It’s yr bestie
