    for the first time of 40 years of gardening, my tomatoes and my green beans struggled and I only got 3 tomatoes - we had a very wet and cold spring early summer and I wonder if that added to it. My pumpkins were wonderful!

    Hello everyone! My biggest struggle is coreopsis, either from seed or plant starts it doesn't matter! UHGG!

    • @SoilandMargaritas
      @SoilandMargaritas  ปีที่แล้ว

      Really? I feel like for myself Coreopsis is one that gets wild here. The less I do for it the better it does.

      @@SoilandMargaritas It's me, I tend to plant them with things that are obviously divas as far as water and fertilizer are concerned. I will plant them with my Russian sage, with so many colors I'm bound to find one that will go great with the purple color of the flower and gray green of the leaves. Since we both garden in Indiana (northwest zone 6) there shouldn't be much difference. I love love love watching you garden! Not an expert, but I/you/we/all, know what we like! You go girl.

      I have trouble with coreopsis because I tend to overwater. See one plant that needs water and end up watering everything!

    A big thank you to all the gardeners who shared their experiences. Things I learned is that sometimes an extra effort is required to be successful. And not to be discouraged by failures but rather try again. Thank you Roxana for the encouragement to be a better gardener!

    My big challenge has been the gophers. They have moved in en masse. Trapping hasn’t been effective enough so I will be planting many things with cages or in protected raised beds. I have gardened here for 25 years with no problems and suddenly they appeared. So digging and replanting this next Spring and Summer.

    The whole summer and fall was a struggle because of our excessive heat and drought. So many plants died or just didn't thrive. I am having to start over on so many plants. Stop trying to have a zone 6 or 7 garden...no more trying to grow Hydrangeas or Dahlias in Texas heat.

  • @amerwine
    @amerwine ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I agree with Michelle from gardens and chickens. Seems like every year the water (drought) gets a little more serious. My plants suffered last year also because of drought. This year I want to collect rain off my shed into rain barrels. Since I am on a well, the constant worry of a dry well is possible. Let’s all hope for a better 2023

    Hi Roxana, I love your channel, content, and garden. I have learned a lot from you. Your limelight hydrengea hedge was my inspiration to plant it as well. Three years later, none of my plants - hydrengea, arbovitae, boxwoods, etc. want to grow. They look great, are not dead, just nothing wants to grow in my heavy, heavy clay soil. Maybe I dug small holes, maybe I'm not fertilizing enough. That's my biggest struggle. (Central Ohio, zone 6a)

    • @SoilandMargaritas
      @SoilandMargaritas  ปีที่แล้ว

      Have you checked if you have a drainage issue where you planted them? Moya of Garden Addictz has heavy clay soil and she was dealing with some issues last year.

  • @ElizabethM824
    @ElizabethM824 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Thanks for doing this! And thanks for introducing us to some new channels. I already follow Matthew at the Southerner's Northern Garden but it was great to find some new channels to follow too. My biggest fail was not getting a drip system started. I just got too busy but I have to get this done. I think I need to start small and just get some drip installed each year and then build on that. We get no rain in the summer here in the Pacific Northwest so watering by hand can take a few hours every day and it exhausts me.

    This makes me feel much better about my losses this winter. I have never had a winter this cold in 7b. My hardy succulents died. My rosemary died. I’ve been growing rosemary for decades and it’s always been hardy no matter what. I put down double frost blankets on my succulents and they still didn’t make it. Devastated.

    Great video. I'm in 5b and we also had super high days in May. It really shocked many of my plants. We had some unusually cool days later on and the swings in temps was hard on my garden. My melons were my real fail this year. I don't really know why, as the year prior was amazing and I did all the same things

    • @SoilandMargaritas
      @SoilandMargaritas  ปีที่แล้ว

      I know my soil in my raised beds was really rich year 1 - 3, nor on year 4 I definitely have to add more of that because the level is also going down. Moving things around is also a good idea, this year I will move my tomatoes from my "fence" line into the middle beds. Fingers crossed!

      I've been gardening for years and I had a pretty mediocre year of tomatoes in raised beds in 2022. What was interesting is that I took 3 leftover tomato starts and planted them in the ground rather than in a raised bed. And those tomatoes did great! This year I am not planting any in the raised beds, only directly in the ground. I think the soil in the raised beds beds has been depleted from growing tomatoes for four years. So try putting your tomatoes someplace different than where they grew last year and don't forget that tomatoes need a lot of consistent watering. Good luck in 2023 😊

    • @michelleredig1910
      @michelleredig1910 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @michelleredig1910
      @michelleredig1910 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Clarendon Lady thank you 😊 I think the watering may have been part of it. We had some bouts of hot windy weather and some of mine were in grow bags. The ones in my raised bed did great but also was first year anything was grown in them too. I did get tomatoes on all plants but some plants were blah looking and like my beefsteak did have a good amount the tomatoes were small to medium in size.

    Loved this video Roxana and great to meet some of your YT gardener friends. I did lose some lovely plants in the heatwave, my English garden was just not used to that, and I don’t have drip irrigation - never needed it before as normally we get a lot of rain. So despite me trying to keep on top of the hose watering, it was tough. Plus I lost one of my favourite topiaries, but that was completely my fault as I decided to move it somewhere else and I ended up killing it!! I’ve also lost my newly planted yukka because I didn’t cover it up and we had snow which stayed for a week. However, having said all that, I’ve also learned a lot from what I did wrong so … it’s not all bad. Hope you have a fabulous weekend - still too cold here to do much in the garden just yet but lots of life appearing with my bulbs which is exciting ❤🎉

    Hi Roxana, nice video. I enjoyed hearing your failures and struggles for 2022. I am 2 hours straight West of you in Illinois. Yes, that May super heat of 95 degrees came early. My 2022 struggle was an extreme infestation of white flies in early September. They show up every September but 2022 they showed up in the millions and sucked the life out of my container petunias until they died. Not even insecticidal soap helped. TY for a great vid👍👍. Have a good weekend.

    I had the worst Garden Failures last year than any of my many years of growing! I can't even list them. I'm taking a step back this year. Not giving up. But my Father is 89 and I've had to shift my priorities. I have to do what I can, where I can. I have many perennial flowers and that will be enough. The Produce Garden may not be at all this year. Maybe...we'll see. I really appreciate this video! Through it all, I never gave up last year.

    I have grown seeds inside for at least 5 years, but this year I had an Aphid and fungus gnat infestation that made me throw a bunch of the plants into the compost bin. I totally felt like a failure and felt guilt about all the wasted seeds, plants, soil, and time spent on it.
    This year I am doing more fungus gnat prevention and trying ways to not even let it get to be the problem it was last year.
    The biggest reason for the outbreak was having someone water my plants in March when we were gone for a week. They had never gardened and then overwatered everything, killing things and setting the fungus gnats up for exponential multiplication.
    Lesson learned: do not overwater and do not let others overwater for you

    • @SoilandMargaritas
      @SoilandMargaritas  ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I've watched a lot of videos on tomatoes and how to prune them to mostly one main stem. I've done that for two years in a row and my tomato harvests have been just so so. This year I am not going to do that. I grow mostly heirlooms and wonder if I am cutting off too much and not allowing them to produce to capacity. I've only lightly pruned tomatoes in the past (at a different property) and the only issue I had was trying to keep them from growing all over the place. The one stem pruning method hasn't worked for me.

    • @SoilandMargaritas
      @SoilandMargaritas  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You know, while I do my best to keep them at one stem, they definitely get away from me and become a 3-5 stem, they do great here that way and I will probably be a little more relaxed this year but I will give them a bit more room to grow as well.

    • @katricefaulkner
      @katricefaulkner ปีที่แล้ว

      I’m also giving up the one stem method this year. I’m going back to just good watering, fertilizing and little to no leaf pruning. And I’m only growing determinate tomatoes this year💚💚

    Hola Roxana, espero que todo bien contigo. One of my fails and was heartbreaking as well, was I lost a lot of plants that I started from seeds. I was devastated!!! It happened at the beginning of my season when it was “safe” to plant outside. After spending months taking care of these plants to have them die was awful. My last frost day is typically end of April but here in Michigan the weather is unpredictable so I always wait until after Memorial Day. Which is what I did last year, we experienced colder temps in early June and I lost about half my seedlings. No te miento que en verdad llore. I felt like a failure and I didn’t garden at that whole week. After I got in my feels I snapped out of it and I got to work repairing what I could. A few of them bounced back and i went and bought more plants lol.

    Hi Roxanna
    I planted 4 emerald green arborvitae early spring 2022 behind my Panicle hydrangeas and they were gorgeous for about 4 months and then I had to remove all 4 of them. I think that the area stays too wet and maybe I planted them too deep because the hydrangea are fine. My yard is heavy clay soil. Since they are hardy to zone 3 I'm thinking maybe keeping them in large containers as a last resort. I would love to replace them so any help would be great!

    • @SoilandMargaritas
      @SoilandMargaritas  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I was going to mention keeping them in containers, I don't normally deal with clay but honestly, I would visit one of your local garden nurseries and talk to someone local about some of your choices for evergreens for clay soil, I can mention a few here but I don't have your type of soil so I would just be throwing guesses for you.

    Cool topic, thanks for compiling this video! I am an experienced gardener and daylily collector. Early last spring I revamped one of my beds and moved three daylilies that hadn’t been blooming like I expected them to, into the newly renovated bed to see if they’d do better there. Two of the daylilies I moved (Malaysian Monarch and Jungle Beauty) bloomed very nicely, better than I had hoped for. The third, Heavenly Angel Ice, didn’t bloom at all and even the foliage was fairly wimpy. This is a very $$$ daylily and a Stout Award Winner, so it really should be blooming. Stout Award or not, this plant may make another move- into my compost pile!- if it doesn’t bloom at all again this year! Thanks for letting me vent, LOL!
