- In a survey, 97% of doctors said if they'd consider moving out of the state, it would be because of Idaho's restrictive abortion laws.
The damage is permanent. Literally permanent. I don’t know any doctor that is willing to go to that state. Not even if they reversed abortion ban they just don’t want to be around extremism.
Doctors don't want to mess with crazy politics.

I live in Idaho. The rural hospital in my town, that serves a community of about 60,000 people, has closed labor & delivery. Half of the OBs have resigned and are moving out of state. Pregnant people will now need to drive 1-2 hours (in good weather, double that in a winter storm) to get to a hospital. Even if a woman shows up at the ER needing an emergency c-section, she'll be put in an ambulance to travel an hour. This is dangerous. The Republicans do not care about women or babies.

I'm a doctor, and I'll tell you that no good doctor would ever abandon patients in need. If you want to move out of state so you can get paychecks for abortions, then you'll have to answer to God when you meet him at the gates
I’m on the other side of this- I’m a recruiter at a hospital in California. OBGyn used to be an area where we had too many vacancies. Not anymore. Texas, Florida, and Idaho are where we are getting most from now.

Doctors and hospitals are already selective which patients they accept depending on the company that gives you health insurance. Maybe they should be more selective and refuse patients that voted for that law. Let them feel how it is not getting the care you need to live.
OBs and GYNs are leaving those anti-abortion states. Healthcare for women is drastically becoming more difficult in those states. You'd think that would send a message.

It's not a federal law to offer women abortion anymore.
Define “emergency treatment”. What docs in Idaho are saying is that they have to wait until the mother is literally dying before they can do anything. When in reality, because they actually went to medical school, they could remove the non-viable fetus and prevent the situation from becoming so dangerous. But Idaho has blocked them from being proactive and using their medical expertise through fear of jail time. This all became possible when Roe v. Wade was overturned. Voters are the real issue here. People can complain that they are outraged, but it was women who voted for Trump that got him enough to be elected in 2016. And his appointments to the Supreme Court allowed for Roe v Wade to be overturned. And now far right politicians who Idahoans elected are using this opportunity as a weapons against women and doctors in Idaho. There will alway\s be extremists trying to get power. This is a voter issue.

The poverty and population loss of the deep south is a cautionary tale for Idahoans. Or enough liberal people will move to Idaho that they vote liberal politicians into office.

I'm just curious why liberals who move here are so surprised and angry that we're a conservative state. After all it's very well known that Idaho is extremely conservative. Didn't you do your research before you came here? What did you expect?
I've lived here over 50 years and I'm moving but not because of the abortion laws. I am moving because I am tired of all the pushy, rude people that have moved in and taken over our relaxed, beautiful, quiet city and consider backwards. I miss walking with my dog safely on the greenbelt and not having to worry about one of us getting hit by a bicyclist that's going too fast and doesn't bother to warn anyone they're passing. I'm tired of being tailgated, flipped off, cut off and yelled at because I'm going the speed limit and I stop at red lights. And of people running red lights, stop signs, not pulling over for emergency vehicles, endangering lives. Not obeying our laws. It's just no longer a peaceful, relaxed place to live anymore. Not because of the growth, because of the type of people moving in.
We are also short of doctors now because the doctors here can't keep up with the growth. It takes several months to get into a specialist and several days to be able to get into our doctor when we're sick. We are losing even more doctors now because they'd rather leave their patients without any care at all rather than be unable to do abortions.
Personally I can't imagine getting pregnant and thinking I don't want to be pregnant so I will just kill my baby then I won't have to deal with it. I don't get wanting an abortion other than the day after pill for rape, incest or if the mothers life is in danger.
Please help me understand why you'd move to an extremely conservative state then be angry that it is, put us down, call us stupid and backward for being this way. You may consider us backwards, slow, stupid etc but we once enjoyed our laid-back life. It was better for our health.
There's one way the people of Idaho can fix this: STOP VOTING REPUBLICAN!!

Trying to post a 2nd time...i lived in idaho for 20+ years and for several years of that time worked as a senior manager in one of the boise area hospitals (among other major corp employers). Three times i was physically assaulted in the workplace by men of a certain mysogynistic religion (starts with an "m") because they did not feel i had a right to be there, let alone make decisions that affected them. Once it went so far that i had to get a restraining order and work with a body guard. Eventually i had a child...born in boise..and became a single parent. My son had a serious health condition and was very ill but i was only able to identify one pediatric specialist in the state. Under his care my son declined rapidly and eventually, when the specialist was on vacation, my baby was admitted to a boise hospital. After 4 days, he was considerably better and about to be discharged when he mysteriously regressed. Come to find out the specialist had returned and discontinued the effective treatment. When i confronted him he said there was nothing wrong with my son, that at 2 years old he was attention seeking and faking the fact that he was so thin he wasnt even ON the growth charts for his height, and that if i wanted him to get better i should stop working and go on welfare because the only thing wrong with my child was that he had a working mother. After i metaphorically wiped the floor with this negligent "you know what" and to save my sons life i made the decision to to leave idaho and never looked back. Six months after we moved my son was thriving. The idaho doc repeatedly lied to me and witheld vital treatment from a baby because he disapproved of my lifestyle, endangering my sons life. Remember the BSU prof who went viral with a conference speech asserting women did not deserve higher education and that their only purpose was to stay home and make babies? To the best of my knowledge he was never even reprimanded. This is idaho. They have long had a war on women led by patheticly mysogynistic followers of this particular religion . Its not just doctors who are leaving. it's a total brain drain. My advice to idahoans? Read Atlas Shrugged and be careful what you wish for. You might get it.
Let the Lawmakers take care of the Patients.

If there's a shortage of medical practitioners across the country, guess which states are going to be bottom of the list for people seeking jobs. It also means the ones they eventually recruit are going to be the ones turned down by blue states, so the lesser qualified, experienced or just downright not good. Expect to see maternal deaths spiking in a couple of years time.
Restrictive states are going to become third world countries. Women of childbearing age will follow the docs, and men will follow the women. The free market has spoken.
Maternal deaths have already been going up and up in the first two decades of this century. It's way more dangerous for my daughters than when my children were born... It's a reflection of the increasingly hostile culture toward women and children. If this was a good culture for women to have babies, fewer people would seek abortion.
If doctors are abandoning people in need, then they are not so compassionate, are they?

Another problem arising: New docs don't want to do their rotations in those extreme states. So this is not only about current docs leaving, there won't be new ones coming, or at least not enough

What's evil is forcing mother's to give birth to dead babies or forcing them to watch their babies suffer in pain after birth and then die in their arms. THAT is evil.
