The 4014 is blue flagged and can’t be moved because employees are working on, under, or around the train. The clipped objects hanging from the sign are the employees ID tags that are using the blue flag protection. As they finish their work they will remove their tags. Only then can the person or craft that placed the blue flag can remove it. Which would probably be the last employee to remove their tag.

@@JawTooth it's very similar to OSHA lock out tag out system. Also mining companies use a medalian system so they know which miners are in which shaft. Each employee would have their own medalian or tag that only that employee could move.

Carl Ferrigno Oh no, It takes a lot more than just money. Peoples knowledge, lots and lots of knowledge, their time, their blood, their sweat, and their tears. It also takes a lot of dedication, lots and lots, of it too.

@@JawTooth that's the lock out tag out protocol, used to protect the workers. That prevents a start up or movement while someone is still working in a dangerous position.

I just gave a thumbs up and subscribed. I live in St. Louis and am a bit of a rail fan in that in 5 weekend to weekend trips I rode all the AMTRAK rail routes west of STL (connections at times in Chicago and K.C.) and Canadian VIA rail between Vancouver and Jasper between 2001 and 2013. Years ago I saw the same Big Boy Union Pacific business car train pass through STL. The locomtive looks the same but cannot be certain if it is the same I saw. I last saw Union Staion in January, 2019 not long after the Giant ferris wheel and Aquarium were completed there. You may have missed looking inside the STL Union Station hotel to see its amazing architecture inside and out. You can just walk inside the hotel and see it. Any rail fan should see the STL Union Station. The Kirkwood, Missouri train station in the county is a great example of a fine looking small town train station. When it was built there was little between STL and Kirkwood as shown on pictures inside the train station if they are still hanging there. A big highlight of when I saw this train pass through fast was the loud thunderous noise as it approached and moved past where I was standing in Kirkwood. I enjoyed seeing the Missouri River Runner with the new AMTRAK engine as I think all mine were on the Genesis model that preceded it and may have even had one run partially with the engine that preceded it on AMTRAK as well. Thanks for showing. I completely understand why the heat and humidity were getting to you on a hot STL summer day.

@@JawTooth I thought you might so am looking forward to seeing them. It was an awesome way to see the West and got me in to buying history books of the rail companies that used those routes prior to AMTRAK days like Great Northern, Santa Fe, Southern and Western and Missouri Pacific, Rio Grande, ETC. I remember getting the idea from watching a PBS station series on Great Railway journeys of the World. My wife went once but was too much of a long haul for her. They were a great adventure for me and seeing the West was a highlight. My last time seeing Union Station in person was January , 2020 and not 2019 as I stated. I recommend any rail fan visting STL stay at the hotel there. As you saw visting here today Kirkwood is just part of St. Louis county surrounding he city and the county is where I live not far from Kirkwood. Good talking to you. The Union Pacific train you saw is impressive. I only remember otherwise riding the New York Central as a kid in the 1950s to visit family in Ohio and I was a small kid at the time. I have also enjoyed riding rail in Europe with their high speed rail even more recently with a daughter who loves to travel but that is a whole other story. COVID changed much for my wife and me so just staying close by STL for now.

Thanks for taking and posting all of your videos. Your channel is awesome! I am a lifelong railroad fan who grew up chasing trains at an early age with my father in the 70's and early 80's around Western Pennsylvania. My wife and I also made the trip out to St. Louis to see 4014. What an experience seeing this beast in person! I told her before we left home that "I know Jaw Tooth will be there too." We looked for you. We booked a room at the Union Station hotel for Saturday and Sunday nights so that we could be a short walk from the yard. Saw it come in Saturday night, did the viewing on Sunday and went over Monday morning to watch him leave. Hope to visit all 7 of the sitting BB's around the country.

This is my hometown JT. In the initial shots of 4014, where she is parked is one of the old leads into the old St. Louis Union Station trainshed. The abandoned building in front is the old tower and the newer, building to the right of 4014 is the old powerhouse, now rebuilt and useful office space. The train station in Kirkwood was built in 1893 and is the old Missouri Pacific station, now owned by the city of Kirkwood but still used as the Amtrak station. The original station on the site was built in 1853 for the Pacific Railroad. As usual, a great video. Thanks.

Another great video of the Big Boy this time in St. Louis, Missouri on static display. I am glad that you figured out a way to get close and personal with the Big Boy. People standing in the hot weather waiting to get into the "Experience the Union Pacific" exhibition car is seems to be normal. In 2019 when the Big Boy was finishing its trip to the Twin Ports of Duluth, Minnesota and Superior, Wisconsin, it took the Chicago & North Western's Adams Subdivision through Wisconsin to Milwaukee, Wisconsin and then down the former Chicago & North Western tracks toward Chicago. It did not enter Chicago but took a route that eventually got it on the Former C&NW now Union Pacific Geneva Subdivision to West Chicago, Illinois. The Big Boy arrived in West Chicago, Illinois the afternoon of 26 July 2019 and was on static dispalay on the 27 and 28 July 2019. I took two of my grandchildren to see the Big Bou on 27 July 2019. That was a hot day too. We had to stand in a long line in the hot sun. Union Pacific did provide cold bottled water to hydrate people. The Big Boy departed West Chicago, Illinois on 30 July 2019 to head back home on the former Chicago & North Western mainline through Illinois and Iowa to Coucil Bluffs, Iowa and on to Omaha, Nebraska and beyond. Nice catch of the Amtrak train and the Big Boy at Kirkwood, Missouri.

FYI The first black tender is fuel oil for the engine, the next two tenders are water cars for the engine. Followed by a diesel electric loco to move the train if the big boy quits and they have to move it into a siding to make repairs. The next several cars are repair cars and the can do most of the repairs that might be needed while on tour. They also hold all the oil and grease to maintain the loco when she is stopped for the whistle stops. I wanted to see her last year when she went through Clinton IA but was unable to make it happen. Great video of her leaving the station. Nobody blocking the camera as you shot it. You can imagine all the hours that went into her to get the engine recertified for operation.

It’s “just n case” These are massive engines, with car loads of spare parts traveling with her, along with crews of repair personnel with them to fix most any malfunction, the diesel will provide power to move Big Boy, her passengers, and train to safety, should they run out of water, (due to a leak) etc. rather than leave passengers stranded between distant cities, or deserts. Each trip of Big BOY is a commitment to History, by Union Pacific, and we all owe them a very big debt of gratitude, and should tell them so, with a nice letter to the home office. WE are ALL BLESSED, that they willingly continue the financial commitment to history. LONG LIVE THE UNION PACIFIC RAILROAD AND HER CREWS! AMERICA’S RAILROAD! May it always be so!

The keys are for "lock out / tag out" That means service employees are working on things that can get them hurt or killed, so they have disabled the device or system they are working on to control the energy and keep someone from turning on the thing they are working on. We have to do that at work to keep from getting electrocuted when we are working with equipment connected to live boxes and whatnot. You do the same thing with pneumatic, hydraulic, gravity concerns etc.

The last time I was in St Louis was for the BLE, Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers, convention. If my memory is correct it was in 2000 the year after I chaired the convention in 1999 in New Orleans. It is the oldest continuously operated Union in America. It is now the BLE&T, The Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen.

I went to st louis over spring break about 2 1/2 years ago and realized an aquarium by Union station would be opening up for the first time later in that year so it definitely should’ve opened by then and I don’t remember seeing a Ferris wheel but I might have to check it out sometime. To me it’s kind of like the one at navy pier in Chicago.

That's cool you visited STL! I was there the day before, for the big boy as well. That blue RPCX switcher does run, just very randomly to move the passenger cars around in the station. It's normally not all taped off, they must've not wanted the Big Boy crowd there that day. The passenger cars get used about 1 month out of the year for the Terminal Railroad Association (TRRA)'s Polar Express.

@@JawTooth RR Blue flags are basically OSHA lock out tag out system. Also similar to the medialan system mining companies use. Where each employee would put a medialan on the mine shaft they're working in and only the employee could remove it once they are out.

J T, you should of been there when UP brought the Challenger in and almost the same spot. It was in January and the Railroad Passenger car Alliance (RPCA) was holding their convention there, so the station tracks were full of private cars.
The private cars are gathering at Albany, New York this week for a convention in Burlington, Vermont.

What A Train! What a trip Jaw Tooth experienced. Excellent Video. Speaking of Train Heat, I wonder if there are engines that the crew could fry hamburgers or the like on. We've heard about frying eggs on hot rocks, cooking chicken in foil under a car's hood, or a beer can up a, uh, never mind, so why not cook on a train engine!? (although it would be simpler to just cook on the firebox's hot coals like we do with potatoes in a camp fire :-)
