I grew up using my Dad's 47 B with a No.5 sickle bar mower in the late 50's and early 60's. I also used the mower with our 49 A, also a great combination. With the leed set right and sharp sickle we could cut heavy alfalfa and red clover in 4th gear with no problem and even in 5th although that was a bit too fast for comfort.
Been there and done that and loved it!!! Was 12 years old. Neighbor’s field of alfalfa and a 60 model John Deere. 40 cents per hour was my pay. About 1964
So I just got a model A and I have a lead on a no. 5 cutter. You don’t have any hydraulics hooked up to the no. 5? ETA: Nevermind. Looks like you do have hydraulics.
Ahh, the sweet sound of an old Deere. Brings back memories of childhood and the old model D the farmer across the road had.
I could watch this for hours. Love watching the ol john deere and the sickle mower. Did a very nice job.

Back in the 1960's we had a Farmall H with a side mount sickle mower. It was so nice because you just looked down in front of you. So much better.

I have the same setup. 1951 B and a #5 sickle mower. Nice paint on your mower ( my mower needs painted ).
These are my kind of tractors these are what I growed up on
The bestest piece of vintage equipment's J'D 🚜🎆👏👍 ohh yeah yes ...
Those old J-D's are tough. Half a century of service and a lot of those old things are still going strong.
Weird. I was just thinking about when the state as well as my Grandpa last used a sickle mower!! Thanks!!
Secret to a good sickle is 3-4'' lead on the bar and a good grass board and keep it going at a good speed!
Can the no. 5 be use to trim tree lines up and down? Vertical cutting
Excellent video…👍
Just bought a number five sickle bar mower to save it from becoming scrap. A video on this unit would be much appreciated!
My dad's outfit, '52 with #5 as well.
Upgraded to '40 with #8 with 9' bar plus a hitch to pull an #894 side rake. Pretty good load for that little tractor.
Cutting the fence/tree line was always an adventure.
No.5 able to do vertical cutting?
The sickle bar mower Looks like a hedge trimmer
Hey what gear do you have the tractor in while mowing?
Normally first at full throttle, it will jam if you try to go to fast.
I cut a lot of hay with that setup
I use an old 42 JD B and a new idea 30A sickle mower, a 4 bar John Deere hay rake and a 14t baler

No telling how much hay father and grandpa cut with a sickle mower
Be careful of the sickle bar. Lifting and lowering can bite the fingers
