It's not really not that hard to pronounce, you just gotta make sure you've got every syllable. Not the easiest name out of all of these, though, you'd be right in saying that.
The only thing more joyous than someone having an epic last name is that person answering a few starters so that we put Roger Tilling through his paces
Thanks again, CosmicPumpkin! A very competitive match, once the losing team stopped shooting itself in the foot. I was rooting for the losers to get a high enough score to come back, but the winners dominated the buzzer late. My best to both teams, and to each individual.
A little bit of late surge from Wolfson Cambridge but I really wanted them to finish as one of the highest scoring losers. But the fist bumps between Pan and the Captain was adorable and the highlight of this match for me. Also the winning team has an amazing Captain who can narrow down the correct answer and goes with his gut feelings. He can analyze all the answers given to him very well.
Remember last season when people were discussing how big an advantage someone like Giannis Antetokounmpo will have if he went on University Challenge? Here's your answer
Thanks for the upload! Very impressed by Roger Tilling this episode. This season’s looking to be pretty high scoring, wonder who will be our first 300+ scorer in a while!
Ha ha, Pan wants to cut off the questions to gain time (24:21) while Bliss waits comfortably for the full questions before answering in order to do the opposite (25:04).
@@thadrin I do not know. I thought it had something to do with having obtained your score with the fewest number of questions, doesn't seem so - I just checked and Southampton got through a total of 35 questions and 36 for Open (starters and bonuses combined). Unless I missed something in my stats. Maybe someone who does know can help us in this regard.
Thanks CosmicPumpkin, always enjoy these episodes from you. I have to wonder why Amol barks "Come on" in the music questions, before the music has finished playing. It's *always* been the rule that the answer is expected at the end of the piece at the latest.... Other than that, I was rooting for Wolfson, who made a great comeback after a poor start.
I think that was pity for Wolfson-Cambridge to raise three successive penalties at the beginning part(−5p × 3 = −15p). Without it they could've been placed in one of the four hight-scoring losing teams and possively even enter the 2nd and QF, because they seemed so powerful that they could recover from such a disappointing situation as a deeply negative score. So, I really want to say ''bad luck'' to them. I hear that college must be strong in quiz activies.
Almost every week there seems to be a comment about penalties. I find any speculations futile. Penalties come as a result of a mode of play which very often wins the teams points too. Had the players been slower on the buzzers by default, it is likely the starters would have been taken by another team. You win some, you lose some, but if you don't play you are certainly not going to win.
I’d be curious to know how strongly ‘going negative at the beginning’ predicts the outcome of the match. Anecdotally, I feel like any time a team starts off going negative, they usually don’t end up winning. Of course it’s possible, and has happened before, but it seems to cost them so much momentum that most of them don’t recover. I’d be interested to put a number on that though, maybe one of you match stats nerds can analyse the last few series to find what percentage of negative scoring openings correlates to a victory for the opposite team.
Many thanks for your services; that all seemed to kick off after starting rather slowly - I make that 185 points notched up by both teams in the final 8-8.5mins 😮. That's also the fourth 400+ joint score this series - I think Rajan has hit his stride since the UEA/Strathclyde game as we've had many more answered Qs in comparison to earlier heats. This means Oxford Brookes will definitely be back in the HSL round; we'll have to see if Trinity/Open/Southampton will join them, or if there's another twist in the tail 😮? Bring on early November - this second round should be one for the ages - not necessarily for the participant teams though 😅!
Thanks again, CosmicPumpkin! Tough questions this time. I got only one non-answer. Akarapongpisakdi has an unfair advantage - it takes an extra two seconds to pronounce the name 😄
22:56 If I had a nickel for every time the movie Saint Maud was mentioned on University Challenge, I'd have two nickels. Which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice
it's alright, feel like the british press hyped it quite a bit, which is perfectly understandable particularly if you have in mind that it's an unusual genre for british films
Congratulations to Oxford Brookes for clinching the first second-chance playoff berth. Trinity can clinch next week if the Bangor/Edinburgh loser scores 170 or less. Amol mentioned that Southampton will be the next team out of the second-chance standings. What is the tiebreaker that places Open ahead of Southampton?
Wolfson much the nicer team. Shitty of Warwick to wait for much-too-long questions to be asked in full when they already knew the answer. Just not cricket.
It seemed to me that Wolfson got their points on much easier questions, which of course is a matter of opinion. That gems bonus section was hard to watch, they probably should have just passed to save time. On the other hand Akarapongpisakdi was impressive and I liked their team work. They seemed strong to me.
It was definitely a tactical decision but I think it's fully kosher compared to hemming and hawing over an obvious question. To be honest I thought it was kind of funny as heck.
Roger Tilling deserves a medal for pronouncing 'Akarapongpisakdi', especially under pressure in the final rounds!
It's not really not that hard to pronounce, you just gotta make sure you've got every syllable. Not the easiest name out of all of these, though, you'd be right in saying that.
Roger Tilling earned his money tonight.

I'm still trying to pronounce it👍

It was specified at the start that Southampton are the 4th placed loser. Do we know what breaks their tie with Open?

A preponderance of mineralogy this ep.
Now there is a phrase begging to be used for something.

The Wolfson team reached the semifinal of the Cambridge Inter-Collegiate Quiz and defeated some very good teams, so they are definitely a strong team.
Wooooh! They fought back but the better team won.
He deserves a prize for the way he easily pronounces very difficult names and how fast he does it.
Teams with some personality and that made it a fun match.
Thanks CP.

Answer to that last question is Honduras

What era Herod? Tiberius?
Do the teams know what the required score is for the second-chance playoff when they play?
The Warwick team did an interview on All Things Quiz; it seemed they didn't know what the highest score needed was.
A good match. Loving the higher scores this season. Rajan has his own individual pronounciation of words, doesn't he !
Both teams had great energy and shocked me with their knowledge. I didn't know 90% of the answers.
There are some of us who understand the value of distinguishing
“Deng Xiao Ping is correct.”
from
“‘Deng Xiao Ping’ is the correct response.”
🧐
The presenter would do well to correct his own pronunciation before correcting the pronunciation of the contestants...
Wolfson much the nicer team. Shitty of Warwick to wait for much-too-long questions to be asked in full when they already knew the answer. Just not cricket.
People complain when the teams interrupt the bonuses, now they complain when they wait for them to be read in full...
Wolfson gave the answer when they knew the answer, cutting through the verbiage.
It seemed to me that Wolfson got their points on much easier questions, which of course is a matter of opinion. That gems bonus section was hard to watch, they probably should have just passed to save time.

Wolfson did it to themselves by their leisurely pace on the earlier bonus questions.

An was an eye candy. Shame we are not going to see her again

Those are outdated and not taught anymore. BCE and CE are now predominantly used.
If Akarapongpisakdi ever becomes a famous film director just being able to spell his name correctly will make one an authority on the man.

An was painfully clueless. She was just an accessory
At least she got one starter right and did try to join in the discussions on the bonuses, which is more than I can say for many other players.
Dvorak?
From one of the Slavonic Dances. (Usually heard orchestrated.)
