Your last version helped me decide on the Charjen for my other half’s MacBook once I got her into photography, and I’m getting the Charjen ministick for my iPad.
Fascinating. I came here from the Technology Connections video about laptop docks which got me thinking how grateful I was to have recently found and purchased a few dongles like these that allow me to connect midi keyboards to my phone and also provide an audio output. It was a crucial piece to find for one of my music projects. I had no Idea until watching this just how big differences in performance could be on these things.
I like the way you clear your desk! I (a first-time MBP buyer) had been spending *WAY* too much time researching a hub to buy sight-unseen for close to immediate out-of-the-box functions I would need; Ethernet being one. This was hugely helpful. Thank you. Liked and subscribed.
I love your enthusiasm! It actually made the video interesting for me, even though I’m not as crazy with transfer speed as you are. I was watching this video, since I’m looking for a USB C hub for my new iPad Air. I just received the Hyperdrive 6in1 hub for iPad Pro and I’ve got to admit, that I think it feels a bit cheap. It would be absolutely awesome if you could make a video about the best hub for tablets and phones with USB C! But otherwise, I think I’m just gonna go with the Baseus Hub that you also mentioned in this video.
I was just searching for a USB C hub that doesn't interfere with the wifi of my MacBook Pro and I'm glad to come across this one. Thanks for the recommendations, Matt!
I’ve read so many articles, discussion boards and watched so many videos trying to find the best dock solution for my new MBP M1. Could have saved a lot of time if I found this first. Thank you, very helpful!

Can you inform us which usb-c hub can charge my device (phone) simultaneously watching a movie from a memory card in the hub. Whew! Many thanks for the eye-opening expose; liked and subscribed!

Just stumbled across this clip , wow , nice effort mate . It just goes to show the difference in performance in this stuff that often looks very similar on the outside and what we see in tech markets , and now we see in front of our eyes on your video the junk to good stuff ratio :) , and the truth is this is probably the tip of the iceberg . Well done sir.

I'm a bit confused. In the video you clearly seemed to favour the CalDigit for the studio option but, in the description, you only rated it second. Am I missing something?
Hard shell case on mine I customized so that it would fit dual plug. Easy 20 minute job. No problem. Used a small file and gave it some curve. Looks great.
- If only I can make use of that type-c port in my mobo and get a decent port hub that I can put on my desk and easily connect devices to without having to reach to the back of my pc every time... **watches the video and checks the pricing of studio hubs** - Nope .... reaching to the back of my pc seems fine now lol. Great video though, keep up the good work.
Like a monk consulting his holy texts for references, I have found myself coming back to this video (and the 2017 edition as well) many times in the past couple of years. It's such a treasure trove of information and, as a geek, I have to say that it is such a FUN entertaining video. It's like the USB-C hub Olympics or Hunger Games, I love seeing the weaker ones get eliminated and thrown in the trash every time. I get that there must've been quite a lot of work for you behind the scenes but I really hope we'll get to sink our teeth on a new updated version soon. Thunderbolt 4 might've brought in some interesting new products to test out! In any case, cheers for the quality tech journalism mate!
Based off of my ignorant understanding of TH-cam monetization policies, how TH-cam monetizes videos and counts video counts is partially dependent on how much of the video a viewer watches. For his own benefit, Matt might not want to recommend ppl end the video at the beginning just to skip the technical details and go to the product links. Just worth mentioning
That initial "....it's OUT *toss in the trash*" had me laughing pretty good! loved the review and how you took the time and explained the benchmarks etc. this is exactly what I was looking for
You are using an old OWC Dock! The new (not even new anymore) is white the UHS2 card reader... (same speed as the Prograde SD reader) And it’s definitely the best on the marked!
I have deathadder V2 and mechanic keyboard both with that thick plug you can't use on MacBooks, is it worth buying a m1x Mac mini if so should I get a dock also?
Buying my first laptop 16 years ago and remember never using all the ports. Now I need something hanging off the side to handle all the stuff I do. 🙄 miss the good old days.
next year (or two) with TB 4 and USB 4 you will have so much fun clearing the confusion. while TB 4 is somewhat a good step in direction of you get what spec states it can do, USB 4.0 can vary so much in terms of data, display signals, pd etc.
The most important thing to me is reliability as long as the speed is decent. Of course the speed will be the speed of the slowest thing along the chain.
Absolutely great video pal I felt lost with the many many different adaptors for my m1 setup and you have shamed me a hell of allot of time watching reviews…..Keep em coming pal cheers 👍
Well done on this.... I've decided to direct port where I can to simplify things. I'll wait to see what the 2021 MBP offers in ports to see which one to get. I have two angelbird card readers and prefer using them. That leaves me needed to jack in a drive or two for editing. A UHS2 sd card would be a dream.
The two best portable options are a bummer in my case because I have a Dell XPS 15 9500, and for some UnGodly ReaSon Dell chose to place the USB-C ports slightly farther away from each other compared to the Macbook Pro. So simply because of that I just can't use them😐
Nice review! Do you know if the charjenpro supports the 100 W power consumption of the MacBook Pro 16 ? Also does the adaptor get too hot when using it?
Such an amazing review! I'm just so bummed that your final options requires two usb-c ports on the laptop. I own an Asus laptop and it only has one USB-C port
First of all, thank you Matt for a very thoughtful and thorough review. The video is an incredible resource for anyone looking to purchase a USB-C Hub. One suggestion though -- I purchased the CharJenPro Flush Mount based on this review. Although the speed is great (as you tested), the flush FIT on my 16" MacBook Pro (2019) is just awful. It is extremely loose and wobbly, so connecting and disconnecting devices must be done very delicately or the whole hub will disconnect from the computer's USB-C ports. Any bump or tug on a cable and I fear my hard drives / connected accessories are going to be ejected. When editing and rendering large video files, this is very precarious. I would gladly trade a bit of speed in exchange for a solid connection between hub and computer. I really appreciate the fantastic review of hub performance, I think in your next video it would help to have some consideration of usability / design / connection security when making purchase recommendations. A car can have the best engine in the world, but if the steering wheel keeps falling off it's almost useless.
I used a HyperDrive flush mount, and it fried my computer, my interface, and a midi cable going to my controller. I had to replace EVERYTHING!!! DON'T USE THE FLUSH MOUNTS!!! They heat up, and arc across everything connected to the computer!!!
Please could you do a video explaining power delivery for charging and how much the usb c hubs can support without a charger plugged in..that kind thing? ACE video btw
Great testing and reviews! I loved the "You shall not pass!" approach eliminating that first batch of contenders. However, it seems to me like you should have added "...for Mac...." in the title somewhere.
The Belkin option you dumped at the start is from what I can tell the cheapest and best option for running dual HDMI monitors for OSX that are not mirrored that exists right now. You mentioned it worked well, but it in fact is the best of its type (not huge desktop hub) for doing this specifically on OSX which is surprising hard. I didn't care about the USB speeds or lack of other ports so I can see why it makes no sense for this test but I think its worth noting.
Thank you Matt, I was just looking to buy one of these hubs, your video was excellent for me :) Best regards to you and your lovely wife, from Uruguay.
this has to be hands down the best and most comprehensive review. I especially appreciate you letting us know your picks in advance in case we didn't want to watch the whole thing. Thanks you!
Usb 3.2 g1x1 is 5gbs , usb 3.2 g1x2 10gbs , usb 3.2 g2x1 is 10gbs and usb 3.2 g2x2 is 20gbs ..... it can get quit confusing if you don't separate them, the X2 or X1 indicates how many lanes it has.
Amazing video but on the "studio" options would be nice to include a best option with dual monitor output since thats also a likely use case with dual monitor setups. Also consider other ultrabooks could be used as host that are not MacBook.
You seem to be missing a few popular options, the 2020 Belkin studio hub is one that can handle the power draw and monitor issues for the 16”, would have liked to see it tested. Also Best Buy sells a flush mount option called a hyperdrive that has the same functions as the Chargen and also wasn’t tested.
I actually have a Samsung T5 SSD hooked up to my current USB hub. I've noticed my hub makes a hissing noise when I'm heavily using it and it also stores all of my games and footage so it needs to run very well. I see the one I have on your table on the right. It's the black glossy one with a thick metal lining and the longer cord. So thanks for making this video, I've been looking to get a better hub and it's nearly impossible to compare without having the products.
Matt, again thanks for the clear explanation. You are a great help, because I'm looking for a great hub. I now also can eliminate a lot of options. I think I will go for the Caldigit for my iMac.
Matt, I just ordered the OWC. I needed several hours to compare the OWC, Plugable and the Caldigit. But I think the OWC is the better one for my iMac. I needed more ports and a way to plug in some devices, without turning around the whole computer every time. With the extra ports Sandisk ImageMate Pro can stay on OWC. Again, thanks for your video, who speeded up my decision to expand my computer with a good device.
Hi dude thanks so much for this. One question: I see you use a case for your Mac. Are you worried at all that it would affect the thermals of the Mac at all and / or lead to quicker degrading of the interior? Thanks
Your testing seemed flawed. Many hubs that have HDMI would now need to split the bandwidth between transfer and display. The hub that simply lacked the HDMI therefore had an advantage in your setup. It should have been tested in a different gauntlet, namely "no 4k".
Fantastic and helpful. By any chance did you come across any multi SD card readers. Looking for something with 3-4 slots so I can ditch the USB adaptors.

Now you have to include power pass through in your review.
I love that you just chuck them in the garbage. Best way to sort thru the chaff.
To me, the most basic feature of a hub is: aux power. You can’t connect reliably 2-3 ssd/hdd’s without it.
Been using some of these adapters and there’s a small but irritating pet peeve I have with most of them that do not angle the adapter at 90º.

I have it and fit really tight and snug. Just push it in harder until you hear a click.
Matt I subscribed only because you throw shit in the trash. Your go-no go approach is refreshing and we need more of it in this world.
I didn't care about the USB speeds or lack of other ports so I can see why it makes no sense for this test but I think its worth noting.
this was the ultimate comparison! i’m looking to buy the UNI 8in1 hub and i wish you had it so i could tell of it was worth my spending
Thank you Matt, I was just looking to buy one of these hubs, your video was excellent for me :) Best regards to you and your lovely wife, from Uruguay.
Thank you for this! It was very informative. Any chance you could make the same rundown of devices using an iPad Pro?
this has to be hands down the best and most comprehensive review. I especially appreciate you letting us know your picks in advance in case we didn't want to watch the whole thing. Thanks you!
This and the original video test are just fantastic and wonderfully informative. Cheers!
8:30 I love it. This guy gets straight to the point and cuts all the bullshit out. Boss move. 💪🏽
This is the best video on TH-cam that explains everything regarding hubs. Thanks!
Usb 3.2 g1x1 is 5gbs , usb 3.2 g1x2 10gbs , usb 3.2 g2x1 is 10gbs and usb 3.2 g2x2 is 20gbs ..... it can get quit confusing if you don't separate them, the X2 or X1 indicates how many lanes it has.
i watched like 15 of these kinds of comparison videos and this is the best by far.
Ive been using Verbatim's USB-C HUB for 2 years now... So far so good.
Amazing video but on the "studio" options would be nice to include a best option with dual monitor output since thats also a likely use case with dual monitor setups. Also consider other ultrabooks could be used as host that are not MacBook.
The OWC has an updated version that drops the FireWire, but adds a microSD slot in front
I cut a little bit off my plastic case so I could use a flush mount. I wasn't aware of the extension.
Constructive criticism try the linus tech tips rample for a bit then show the results in bar graphs to make it easier to explain
Hi, I'm undecided between Anker and Lemonera. Which one would you recommend me?
I think we need a table comparison at the end of the video.
Why don’t any of these options have both display port and hdmi?
Thanks
Amazingly comprehensive survey. Thanks so much, Matt.
This man is the hero we never knew we needed
Great video! I think VAVA USB C Hub 9-in-1 is the best !
Fantastic in-depth overview, tests, and information! Thank you very much
