Hi Lisa thank you for your comment. So glad to read this video has been helpful. I have plenty of videos here on this channel that will help you on your art journey with panpastels and the way I paint with them.
@ I’ve already subscribed and I will watch a bunch…..this was my plan. I want the whole set of colours so I’m gunna have to wait for a bit to start 😁🌻💛
I am a 12 time published Illustrator and a graphic and web designer. I decided to revert back 40 years and go back to traditional art in traditional media. When I was a kid back in the late 70s early 80's I used to love to watch Bob Ross on TV so I dug up a bunch of old Ross Tutorials and I ruined 30 or so canvases trying to paint with oils like Bob Ross. I am going to try this technique using the Bob Ross tutorials. I imagine that it would be easy. Time will tell. I just purchased a set of 80!
G'day Nick, thank you for watching and your comment. PanPastels are a unique pastel, and the manufacturer wanted to create a pastel that you can paint wet action only dry, and, most of all, they wanted to create low dust. My techniques are NOT low dust and paint in an unconventional way, but I get the results I'm looking for. I have many videos here on how I use PanPastels. A lot of artists use them a portion of the way; however, I use them to the maximum. I'm happy to answer any questions you have when you get your set. Above all, just play with them, and you'll find your way with them. Happy Painting.
This is a magical medium! I began using a brush in this way by scraping soft and hard pastels into a powder then applying with a brush. So fun. So effective 😊
I’ve just starting using my Pan Pastels on Pastelmat which is my favorite surface. I have also been using brushes and started doing so because the Sofft tools don’t last very long on the Pastelmat and I had trouble getting the level of detail I wanted. I have been using them with colored pencil but may trying doing an entire drawing with Pan Pastel. You have inspired me. YI haven’t tried mixing them with Zest It. What a great idea. I do mainly animals and have found the Pan Pastels so helpful in getting blacks really black. Loved this video. I have subscribed. Want to see more!

This is a great video. Really shows a side of pan pastels that many are not familiar with. Really opens up so many possibilities. This was definitely something that was needed within our art niche. Thank you 😊
I don’t know why I didn’t think of this before! It looks like a perfect technique for subtle skin tones in portraits. Thank you! Also, love Pastelmat. The best!
G'day SoFlo, it's a technique that I have developed over the years. I just love to paint like this, as it gives me the details I crave. I have plenty of portraits here on my channel, and this technique works for everything. I'm glad this was helpful. Happy Painting 😘
Dq I love all your beautiful, fabulous - thank you!! At the young age of 81 I would really love to do my favourite PanPastels. on the PastelMat, in your very clever technique. Would you be so kind and let me know where I may purchase this paper please? Kindest regards. Wishing you many years of happy Creativity with PanPastels.🌻🌻
Dear Drini, first of all thank you for watching. I have plenty of videos here on my channel where I use my bristle brush technique. Not sure which part of the world you are from but Pastelmat, is available in art stores that may carry pastels and PanPastels. Pastelmat is available on Amazon. Again thank you for watching and God Bless.
Hi Susan, thanks for watching. You can use any mineral spirit. Here I use zest it. As for the brushes, they take getting used to. However, this creates more dust than Sofft Tools. I get a lot of control with the brush technique. Happy Painting.
Hi Paddy, thank you stopping by and thank you for watching. I have quite a bit of content for you to view. If you have any questions do not hesitate to ask.
Wow! This is awesome idea! I use Panpastel with soft tools, but I never thought use brushes!, I love of how you can paint very easy with brushes! Thanks for this marvelous idea💡 😃🥰
G'day Claritza, so glad this was helpful, I paint like this all the time. It's definitely a game changer. It means I can use PanPastels more effectively before I go in with pastel pencils.
late to this but so glad I found this...this is GENIUS!! makeup brushes are the perfect tools to blend pastels since they're made to blend powdery/chalky eyeshadows seamlessly, definitely trying this out!
Hi Grace, never too late, thank you for your comment and watching. I use anything I can get my hands on to get the effect I'm going for. I have many videos here where I show more little tricks and tips. PS. this technique works best on Pastelmat or UART. Happy Painting 😊
Absolutely loved it Chrissy, it opens the pans up to extraordinary dimensions and shows their use is limitless. All I can say is WOW 150 out of 100😁😁😁❤️❤️❤️
Thanks Mate, and thank you for your support, appreciate it so much. I was a bit tired of reading that these Pans are only used for backgrounds and base layers (of which they are excellent for), but I just wanted to show that you can take this medium further than that. Wow 150 out of 100, that's my top score!!!! :)
Thanks for this video. I've watched other videos using pan pastel. They will say "you can use pastel pencil or brushing Pan Pastel but I'm using colored pencil". You not only use brushes, you show how and you even show how to mix a slurry for fine details. Thanks. I hope you do more Pan Pastel examples. I'll be here, I just liked and subscribed. You are right about the cost of Pastel Mat, but I can't afford it being a beginner in this medium. I need a good paper I can afford and then work up to Pastel Mat. I'll know what I'm doing at that point
Hello Barbara, thank you for watching and taking the time to comment. I enjoy using this style of painting as I have a lot of control, particularly when I'm paint in small areas.
I wish you could do more flowers with the brush technique. They would be fun to do for practice before trying your bigger pieces! I love my pan pastels!
Hi Karen, Thank you for watching. Yes, I've developed this brush technique over the years. Come to think of it, I use anything that will give me the outcome I'm going for. Thanks again, Chrissy 🙂
This came up on my feed because I’ve been searching for pan pastel videos, and I am so excited to try this method. I’m not so crazy about the sponges and I look forward to seeing what results I can come up with using the makeup brushes I already have for other projects. You are so talented, and I have now subscribed. Looking forward to checking out your other videos. Thanks for sharing your ideas and talent.
Hi Martha, so glad you stumbled on my channel. This technique works best on Pastelmat, UART and Lux Archival. Just keep testing which brush works for you. This channel is full of free tips and tricks. Thank you for watching and feel free to ask as many questions as you can and hopefully I will be able to answer them.
Fascinating! I would love to see a video of using the brushes on different types of paper. I do a lot of work with pans on different materials that have a sanded ground painted over it.
Hi Giulia, thank you so much for watching. I do have a handful of videos using different papers.. Just check my channel, I did a simple Mushroom on a few different papers.
I love this!! I’m an esthetician and make up artist by day and I’ve just picked up pastels again. I’ve contemplated using a set of makeup brushes that I bought and never used, since I’m already using silicone nail art tools to do detail blending. After watching this, I’m inspired to give it a go 😊 thank you for sharing!!
Glitter thank you so much for watching and taking the time to comment. So glad you're inspired to give Pastels another go. Please feel free to contact me if you get stuck, until then happy painting. 👍😉
Terrific Lisa, welcome and hopefully you'll find some of my artwork value adding. If you come across something you don't understand, please free to send me a note. 👍😍😍
Okay, where where you when I was buying the Sofft tools for my PanPastels? Just kidding. I tried out some of my brushes and horray! So much better. Thank you for this video!!!❤
Hi Windy, I've been here for a while, 😄 🤣 😂. You are most welcome to view more of this technique here on my channel. Thank you so much for watching 👀 ❤️
Okay, I have tried my Jackson’s Handmade, Sennelier, Unison and Rembrandt soft pastels and my brushes worked well on all. I am using my Rosemary & Co Eradicator brushes. They are wonderfully firm for heavy grain paper and good for smooth surface as well. Thank you again for this Video. ❤️
Hello again Windy, well that's cool. Remember, there's no wrong or right way to do things, so long as you get the outcome you're looking for. Also, PanPastels are designed for no little or no dust when using the Sofft tools and Sponges, it's just that I want to prolong the use of panpastels before using pastel pencils. This brush technique works best on Pastelmat and a sanded surface similar to UART. Again, thank you for watching and happy painting. 😊
Just an FYI, you can also just use isopropyl alcohol for mixing pans into a paint like consistency or even to blend directly on the Pastelmat. It doesn’t spread the way Zest-it and OMS can and it dries much quicker. It also is less irritating to folks that have sensitivities to solvents. It’s also a really good way to lay down a white under layer on darker paper colors to be able have lighter colors pop.
Hi Marie, I don't use any fixative. When I'm not framing behind glass, I protect my work with glassine paper pouches which I make. Thanks for watching 👀.
@@Xrissart thank you for your response. I'm now curious. What are glassine paper pouches? I use parchment paper on my work to prevent smudging. Are you making an envelope type of storage to slide your work in?
@marievaillant216 hello again. Yes I make giant size envelopes. I have a video here on my channel where I show you how I do it. It's an older video but still very relevant.
I had the idea of playing around with applying pastels with a brush just a couple of days ago and today happened upon your video. Thanks very much for sharing, you've saved me several steps in experimentation. Lovely picture, too!
Greg, thank you so much for watching and your comment. I use brushes a lot and this is typically how paint with Panpastels as well as using Sofft Tools. I work quite tightly and the make-up and Synthetic paint brushes give the control and detail I need. If you get stuck using this technique, please don't hesitate to contact me. Happy Painting 👍😉
I am so very happy to have found you and your channel! I have PanPastels and so far have been frustrated with what I'm getting. I love the idea of using makeup brushes instead of the sofft tools. Your art is pure gorgeousness! Thank you for sharing your time, talent and kind heart with all of us.
G'Day Bella, welcome! thank you for your lovely words. I say get stuck into it and don't give up until you find your way around using them, apart from them being fun to work with, they are high in pigment, little binder and lightfast which is a huge bonus.(I sound like a commercial!!) Love sharing what I discover and feel free to ask any questions, hopefully I'll be able to answer them. Keep on keeping on and talk soon:)
Thank you so much for watching and taking the time to comment. Yes these brushes and the techniques I've developed have taken my artwork to whole new level.
G'Day there Modere, always nice to read comments from a fellow Aussie. I live in NSW. This brush technique has changed the way I paint and taken my work to a whole new level. I would love for you to ask as many questions as you can. I have many tips and tricks here for you to pick up and try. Thank you for watching and take it easy. Bye for now!!!
G'day BI Schafer, thank you for your comment. Yes, this is an interesting technique, and find I get terrific details. The sponges are great as well as they are made specifically for the use of Pans and made for low dust. The bristle brushes do make the pastel dusty. Having said that, I use bristle brushes aaaaaalllll the time and get the outcome I'm looking for. Thank you for watching. Happy Painting.
Margaret thank you for watching:) I work tightly and wanted to get the most out of these lovely PanPastels. I find by using the brush I get a lot of control. But just a note these Pans aren't designed to be used with a brush or the way I use them sometimes, but I achieve the results I want when using them with my brush technique. In this video I was trying to say that these Pans are not just for backgrounds or base layers for other media and that you can use them a whole heap more. I can take the PanPastels through to about 80% of my paintings before I start using other media (I sound like a commercial!!!). Again thank you for watching.
Thank You for sharing this technique. I’ve been apprehensive about using my pan pastels but now I’m going to get really excited and try it with the brushes, thank you!
G'day Leigh thank you so much for watching. I have a tonne of stuff on my brush techniques here on my channel. Feel free to ask me as many questions as you can.
G'day Mickey, thank you so much for watching and your kind words. No I don't use any spray fixative at all. If I'm not framing my pieces behind glass I usually store them in my home-made glassine pouches.
Wow, you are an amazing artist, your flower is utterly stunning! I came across your video while searching for PanPastel tutorials. I have only just bought a couple (in a sale) & when they arrived, I did not like them. Immediately knew I had to learn "how to" so I am not wasting pennies. Lol. I'm into mixed media, in NO way am I an artist like yourself (I wish). However, saw that you use them with brushes so wanted to learn more. Ty for sharing your tips, watching you has really helped and inspired me. I'm now going to check out your channel properly! Hoping you enjoy 2019. C🎨😊🐾
Caroline thank you so much for watching and so glad to read you're inspired to give the Pans another go. Feel free to ask me as many questions as you like, hopefully I'll be able to answer them.
Hi Emmy, I'm so glad to read this is helpful and glad you stumbled on this channel. I've got heaps of free stuff. Just go into the video tab or my playlists. Feel free to ask me questions about the techniques I use. Happy Painting, Chrissy.
I have just started using pan pastels as a base for my dog portraiture but am having trouble by laying down too much pastel. This has really inspired me to use your technique. Thank you
G'Day Linda, so glad to read this technique has inspired you. My channel is full of content where you see me use brushes. In fact, I use anything I can get my hands on provided it's archival. Thanks for watching.
Hi Sunayna thank you so much for watching. Appreciate you taking the time to comment. Please feel free to view more videos. Kind Regards Chrissy Xrissart
@@Xrissart i was about to bought pan pastels ... so taking some time to see how they works..cause they are quite expensive. ...waiting for your new videos to come.... and do they really work when there is very little is left in the pan
Hi Sunayna, absolutely they work to the end. PanPastels and the techniques I use have taken my artwork to whole new level. I know you will enjoy them too. 🥰🥰🥰
really, really beautiful! I love that it's not so sped up, you can't see the technique. I bought a bunch of Pan pastels for another project, but didn't like the sponge applicators and the blotchy way they put down color. thank you for a great video!
Katherine, thank you for watching and appreciate you taking the time to comment. It's always good to experiment, sometimes you just don't know what you'll come up with. I'm forever trying new things and surfaces and trying to find a technique which best suits the way I work. I'm loving what these brushes do, however the Sofft Tools have their purpose too. Happy painting!!!!
Hello Elizabeth, thank you so much for watching. This technique is best used on Pastelmat by Clairefontaine. If you have any questions about the techniques I use please don't hesitate to contact me. Regards Chrissy
Xrissart I used my own prepared sanded paper, using clear gesso and the brush technique worked great! Painted a still life and the brushes worked great with fine details
Thank you for sharing your technique. It was fascinating to watch the painting evolve. I'm going to try using brushes. I only have 24 pastel pencils so hope this will expand the ability to detail.
I am so glad you shared this Chrissy, thank you so much! I have used brushes but did not have as much success. I will persevere with other brushes. Your tulip is gorgeous👏
Carla thank you so much for watching and your comment. My brush technique works well on Pastelmat, so the surface makes all the difference. I say keep on keeping on until you find your groove. I also use synthetic paint brushes, keep on trying different brushes until you find the one that suits you best.
This is wonderful. I’m just got pan pastels for the first time last week and am experimenting. I love your idea of the inexpensive make up brushes!! And your painting in the background is all just beautiful.
Thank you Sheila for watching. Yes this is a very innovative way to paint with PanPastels alongside the Sofft Tools. You are welcome to ask me questions anytime. Enjoy the PanPastels 👍😘
G'Day there J Tait, so glad you stumbled on this video, I've been using @PanPastels for many years. This medium has a great deal of potential and I've just skimmed the surface. If you get into any difficulty and have questions, please don't hesitate to contact me. Happy Painting:)
Hey there Daneshu, so glad to read you enjoyed this little study. Feel free to contact me if you have questions and thank you for watching, this medium has sooooo many possibilities.🎨👍😍
Thank you for your lovely comment Lindy, that's so cool, that's it!!! get those PanPastels out and play, play and play, you may come up with a technique that may work for you!
Hey there Marg, thank you so much for watching and your comment. PanPasteks are extremely versatile and highly pigmented (so lightfast issues are not a problem). Feel free to contact me should you have any problems. Happy painting 👍😀😀
Hello . First time here glad i found you, i only heard of panpastel until now , now i know what the whole pastels i need about the pans and the brushes , so thank you so much for your class ..btw, Pastelmate are very expansive in my country also.
Hello Gila, so glad you found me too. Hopefully this video was helpful. PanPastels is pastel only you use them different to stick pastels. I enjoy the brush technique with PanPastel because it let's me paint like wet paint only dry. I have plenty of videos using PanPastels. If you look in the playlist section on my channel that says PanPastels Tutorials, you will see many tips and tricks. Yes Pastelmat is expensive, but worth it. Perhaps buy a sheet and cut it up.Thank you for watching. Regards Chrissy
I only have a set of 10 Pan Pastels. But I really love them. Nothing gives me such vibrant color with almost no mess, & my pans barely look used. I love that they last so long & go so far. I would love to have them all. But my bank acct. is drowning at the moment. So no new supplies for me until I can see the light at the end of the tunnel. LOL I have not been able to try them on any true Pastel paper yet. I will. Your painting is beautiful TYFS
G'day Kim, thank you so much for watching and message. PanPastels are terrific to work with. Don't forget that you can mix colours to make new colours. Colour mixing with PanPastels are a very big feature. Happy to answer questions if you get stuck. Happy Painting🎨 regards Chrissy 😍

Wow, what a fantastic video! I love how you explain each step and the tools you use. I might just dig out my Pans again and give them another try. Thank you!
Sally thank you so much for watching and your comment. Glad that you're giving these another try. Remember it's all about the surface, makes all the difference. Happy painting 😍👍

Hi Chrissy, love to watch you paint. There are also synthetic brushes in the craft section at Bunnings, very inexpensive and great to work with. Never thought I would say this as all my brushes are quite expensive ones.
Hey Millie, thank you for watching. Brushes in Bunnings! well that's good to know, I'll be there soon checking it all out!!!!! I know what you say about the brushes, I have expensive brushes too and I never thought about using what I'm using, go figure!!!! I maintain that it's the surface, if forgives me at every turn. As always thanks again for interest and kind words.
Love this video, thank you for sharing this technique. I have a whole set of pans but haven’t used them yet. This has given me the motivation to have a go ☺️ Thank you
Hey there Lesley, OMG you have a whole set!!!!! All I can say is GO FOR IT:) Please contact me if you have any questions relating to the techniques I use;)
Thank you so much, yes the whole set and haven’t used them!! 😵 we’ve had builders at home for months, doing major works, so dust everywhere 😫 didn’t want to start any artwork until they had finished! They have now so can’t wait to start using them 👍 x

Oh wow, so glad I found your channel, this is outstanding.
Terrific Lisa, welcome and hopefully you'll find some of my artwork value adding. If you come across something you don't understand, please free to send me a note. 👍😍😍
Wonderful
Thank you for watching
Cosmetic brushes.... This is a game changer for me. Thank you for a fascinating video!
Thank you so much J Langley for watching. These brushes have taken my artwork to whole new level.🎨👍
That's fantastic, thank you for sharing and watching 👀 😀
To frame or display your art do you use a fixative of some sort to protect your work?
Hi Marie, I don't use any fixative. When I'm not framing behind glass, I protect my work with glassine paper pouches which I make. Thanks for watching 👀.
@@Xrissart thank you for your response. I'm now curious. What are glassine paper pouches? I use parchment paper on my work to prevent smudging. Are you making an envelope type of storage to slide your work in?
@marievaillant216 hello again. Yes I make giant size envelopes. I have a video here on my channel where I show you how I do it. It's an older video but still very relevant.
Oh just wow! What an eye opener, I am going to try this out for myself. Thank you for your excellent video.
You are most welcome Sarah, so glad this was helpful. Unconventional process, but it works. Thank you for watching.
I also used a brush on technique the first time I practiced with PP. I was happy with the results. Thanks for your lovely video.
Thank you so much for watching. The brush technique let's me use PanPastels longer.
Awesome drawing! I absolutely love pan pastels.
Hi Soul, thank you for watching. I love PanPastels too. I hope this video was helpful. :)
Very helpful and inspiring! Now I know how to do it. Thank you!
G'day Don, so glad this was helpful. Thank you so much for watching 👍
Beauitful. I have Eco brushes but never thought about using them this way!
Hi Pam thank you so much for watching. Painting with bristle makeup brushes and other brushes have taken my artwork to whole new level.
Stunning!!
@jameshenderson5385 thank you for watching 👀 🙏
I say get stuck into it and don't give up until you find your way around using them, apart from them being fun to work with, they are high in pigment, little binder and lightfast which is a huge bonus.(I sound like a commercial!!)
Love sharing what I discover and feel free to ask any questions, hopefully I'll be able to answer them. Keep on keeping on and talk soon:)
Xrissart You are just so sweet! Thanks for the encouragement!
Very nice to see that you also canonise brushes 🥰
Thank you so much for watching and taking the time to comment. Yes these brushes and the techniques I've developed have taken my artwork to whole new level.
Stunning, have just found pan pastels, never used them...but after watching you I will definitely use this method too..thankyou...fellow Aussie Qld
Learnt something new and loved it.👍
G'day Yogi, so glad to read you enjoyed this. Enjoy sharing my discoveries. Thank you so much for watching 👍🎨
Fantastic idea,thank you for sharing.
Thank you for watching.
THANK YOU, GREAT INSTRUCTION AND EASY TO UNDERSTAND.
Hi Ray thank you for watching and hope it was helpful 😊
What a great idea!! Ive thought those dumb sponge tools look just stupid and you cant get fine detail. I like this!!
Wow wouldn't have thought pan pastels could be used this way. Thanks for the demo !!!
Wonderful tutorial...I love your work!
What you are doing is amazing and beautiful. I imagine you perhaps spray your work once done?
I found a pan pastel alternative but in grays
Very helpful technique, i'm glad i ran into this video thank you!
Hi Emmy, I'm so glad to read this is helpful and glad you stumbled on this channel. I've got heaps of free stuff. Just go into the video tab or my playlists. Feel free to ask me questions about the techniques I use. Happy Painting, Chrissy.
Hope this catch on.
Thanks for watching.
oh my God im blown away by your artwork ❤😱😱😱❤❤❤❤❤
Hi Sunayna thank you so much for watching. Appreciate you taking the time to comment. Please feel free to view more videos. Kind Regards Chrissy Xrissart
@@Xrissart u really really deserved it...
@@Xrissart omg thanks so much for tye information that u gave ....a few 9f tge people really replies back
really, really beautiful!
I love your use of makeup brushes! Just ordered mine
@@elizabethbalderrama7467 Hi Elizabeth that's fantastic, thank you for sharing. I love hearing/reading about artist's discoveries. Happy Painting 👍👍🎨

Precisely Marg, I've been saying that all along. It's incredible what work can be done these PanPastels. Thank you so much for watching.👍😍🎨
Looks so real! Very helpful Chrissy, thank you so much! Oooooo loose paste! Genius!
G'day Dorothy, so glad to read this video has been helpful. Thanks for watching 👍😍
Thank you for sharing your technique. It was fascinating to watch the painting evolve. I'm going to try using brushes. I only have 24 pastel pencils so hope this will expand the ability to detail.
Hi Mary thank you for watching. This technique works best on sanded surfaces for example Pastelmat or UART. So glad this was helpful.

Our art group was given some and we were clueless how to use them
Your painting is excellent by the way :)
G'Day there J Tait, so glad you stumbled on this video, I've been using @PanPastels for many years. This medium has a great deal of potential and I've just skimmed the surface. If you get into any difficulty and have questions, please don't hesitate to contact me. Happy Painting:)

Absolutely love!
G'day Heathe thank you so much for watching and hope it was helpful:)
Wonderful thanks Chrissy

Thank you so much watching Gloria, this brush technique has totally changed the way I paint with PanPastels ❤👍
Absolutely love this method! Great job...
Marcelle thank you so much for watching, this technique is best used on Pastelmat. Happy painting 😘
