With this AND your water reversal AND creative glassware videos, you have given us all loads of ideas to work on during these challenging times. Thanks Gavin, and hope to see you back at TCC some time!
I love little tips I pick up, wondering why I hadn't thought of such a solution before. A cup to stop the drips and let the ripples disperse. Now I need to find a decent water tray. Fun project for an evening.
Hi Gavin! Wonderfull your works and tutorials. Thanks for sharing!!! Hola Gavin. Maravillosos tus trabajos y tutoriales. Gracias por compartir. Aprendo mucho contigo. Gracias!!!
Brilliant Gavin, I’ll be having a go at that at the weekend. To many videos out there that are way to complicated but you’ve simplified it...thanks...👍
I did my first try last week with a very old video from you. Results were not as expected and now I understand why, I was using too much flash power and got a very soft image. I will try once again and see if I improve. Thank you for this new video awesome as always.
I remember you made this on your previous video but I'm sure glad you give us an idea for the water to stop sinking out..then to drop out naturally....my biggest question for you Gavin is Will you be able to show us any types of tips and tricks for food photography by any chance??
As usual great video, well explained. Will give that a go tomorrow. Have done some multiple exposures and some drop objects into a small fish tank. Failed at soap bubble's just could not get correct focus. Will give this a go tomorrow.
This is awesome. Thank you! I know what you mean about getting a low power on the flash and how it can be tricky with a speed light. I learned the hard way when throwing treats at the dog. I got quite a few images with motion blur. Flash duration was too long because it was on high power. One thing other thing I learned is that dogs have very fast reflexes.
Gavin, A very fun project. I definitely learned a lot doing this. I posted some examples Instagram at those hashtags. This also gave me some ideas that I might do in Photoshop with the pictures. Thanks for the challenging idea. I really do enjoy your videos.
Fantastic learning Gavin i have followed your videos and find them very interesting. I did the lightbulb with water over it but my images were good but I had a light at the background. Any suggestions please. Thanks Ron
Just did this the other day, awesome but super frustrating. Thank you for all the great tutorials Gavin, you are great!! Just tagged you in my Instagram shots ☺
Add some corn syrup to the water in the ziplock to create more predictable and uniform drops. You’ll have to experiment to get the amount just right for your purpose. If you have access to glycerin, that’s even better than the corn syrup. You can also eliminate the soft box by getting some white cardboard; or construction paper taped to all of the walls and bottom of the inside of a medium size box with one side removed. That way your flash is all the light you need. Obviously the box bottom needs to be large enough for whatever water pan you choose to collect the water drops. I’d prefer a Pyrex glass pan myself since it’s see through so color isn’t an issue.
@@GavinHoey Yeah, all good. Just thought I'd point out that a laser trigger really comes in handy for this. 🙂 Thanks for all your tutorials, BTW. You are by far the best Adorama instructor! Thanks for the tons of creativity and good mood you are enfusing your tutorials with.
I tried this for the first time last night. I struggled with focus so I really like your idea of the screw in the clay to focus on! I will try that next round! I also was shooting too low and too far away possibly but I got a couple of decent shots! I tagged one of them for you! Thx for the video!❤✌📷
Very nice video. Thank you. But I have a question: is it possible to take similar quality shots without flash light? I mean like for example with Godox SL 60 W LED ? I need to save money first to buy some good Flash Light. So at the moment I just use Godox and 2 SoftBoxes (continues light)
Hey Gavin, I’m. We to the channel and have been really enjoying the information. Some of you speed quickly on the influence or speed settings in relations to flash is there a video on light information ?
awesome ! i thought we needed a synchro tool for camera with a valve control. I didn't imagine we could grab the droplet without it. i saw beautiful pictures with milk,...
Hey Gavin! Hey, at 4:10 you say "The lower the flash power the more it freezes the splash." Why is that? And do full-size studio heads to a better job at freezing, as opposed to lower-powered speed lights? Or if you have enough light, would they be the same at their lowest power? Just curious. Thanks for the video.
Hi, I know I'm not Gavin but just to answer your question, the lower the power of the flash/heads the quicker the duration of the flash. Higher power the "flash" is longer.
Hi Michael. It's a sensible and simple sounding question that's tricky to answer in the same way. Studio flashes might be better, they might be worse. It depends on the technology inside. As for why less lower is better at freezing things. In your head replace the word power with duration. So now less power is less duration and assuming you set your camera to underexpose the ambient light to black, less duration = freezing action.
Would you use the same lighting if you were doing this shot with milk? The shadow towards the camera, I am guessing, would be too dark with the white subject. Any suggestions?
👍😙❤ That's a amazing video Gavin 👍 Why have I paid 200 € for a photo workshop what in the end was for nothing? Too complicated and I should have invested hundrets of euros. Thanks so much for this Gavin ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
about flash duration to freeze the splash, if i understand, it is not recommended to use a gox v1 in high sync and camera in 1/1000sec ? why is a 400W needed compared to a godox v1 ? again V1 should be at full power so too slow to freeze ? why a 14-40mm ? what about a 105mm macro 1.8 at f11 ?
You don't need a 400ws flash, a speed light is perfect. Whatever you use, keep the power down for a short flash duration, even if it means upping the ISO.

Nice one Gav . Just. Got a Canon 90d . I need to take pics to stop the madness advancing .
Thanks for great photo ideas .
If you don't use your camera regularly the shutter will freeze solid... At least that's what I heard somewhere 😉
I gave this a try last night: great fun! The results were ok. But, I'll try again with a slightly higher ISO so I can get the power down some.
Wonderful tutorial.. Can u make one on smoke photography ??
Hi Gavin
Posted few pics with the hashtag.
I used a IV infusion set so that i could slow down the drop rate. Thus i did not need the Jug😄
An IV kit sounds a bit more advanced then my bag and pin 👍

This is fantastic ! Will it work with other liquid substances ? E.g. red food colouring for a blood effect ? Thanks :)
Using a laser trigger makes it easier to catch the best moments and using flash gels creates interesting colourations.
I'm sure a laser trigger would be a huge help but this was all about using things most people will have access to 😉

Hi Gavin. I have a 18-55mm, 55-200mm and a 50mm, which would work best for this shot?
You did a Greta job explaining the process but, I don’t have a flash or any fancy lighting.
Would you use the same lighting if you were doing this shot with milk? The shadow towards the camera, I am guessing, would be too dark with the white subject. Any suggestions?
Not happy with randomly pressing the shutter. Is there any elegant solution without using some electronic triggering?
No idea how you timed it right, because i got a ton of ripples with no drops, or I got the drop before it got to the water.
