The only thing that is a glaring flaw in Fire Force till the end is Tamaki. I know you haven't finished the manga yet but the single worst fight in the whole manga is present in the final arc (related to Tamaki obv). I was hoping to see her in action as we saw in the Obi rescue arc (that fight was amazing) but Ohkubo had to "prove" the western audiences wrong so he did the single worst thing he could've done with Tamaki. I will not spoil anything as you haven't read it yet but remember her new cat transformation while training with Hina and Hika in Asakusa? Well, Ohkubo dropped that and made the "fight" the exact opposite of what the people would've wanted. I ADORE Fire Force but what he did to Tamaki is the only thing that makes me not give it the Top 5 spot in my personal animanga rankings. (Edit: Subscribed to the channel as well! I'm going to binge all your videos today as most of the videos you've made are about some of my favorite animanga!)
haha ohhh boy, thank you for letting me know wothout spoiling it!! its really frustrating, because ohkubo’s even gone on record saying he made maka the protagonist of soul eater because he thought there wasnt enough female leads in shounen, and its like my brother in christ youve completely 180’d on your female character writing. Thank you very much! I hope you like what you see and stick around for more :P
@@Tsumamii I don't think he's writing bad female characters especially when FF still has characters like Mari, Maki, Hibana, the final antagonist (spoiler so I won't name her) and Iris. I think the problem here was that the Japanese audience LOVES Tamaki (she's always top 3 in popularity polls) and even Mashima sensei (author of Fairy Tail) insisted him to keep the Tamaki gag in the manga. But the western audience hates her so, he made that final fight out of spite. That's my interpretation. Anyways enjoy reading the manga! It just gets better and better from where you are rn.
you know thats fair! I didnt meant to say the entirety of his female character writing was bad just that in this instance hes 180’d, Im especially a big fan of Maki’s arc with her brother :)
I dropped fire force because of the lucky lust chick. It's so gross and inappropriate when a fight happens and it's so often. If I was 14 again sure I would have enjoyed it during my harem ecchi days but I'm way past that now being 22 years old. I can't stand harem and ecchi anymore.
After having recently finished watching the Soul Eater anime, I can say that your critique here is fair and explains some of the things that stuck out to me as a bit off better than I ever could. I haven't seen Fire Force, but the art style looks amazing and this video's making me want to check it out. Anyway, I guess somebody better call the fire force, cause this video was big fire!
Really loved this video! Especially loved the explanation of the difference in characters’ agency in both series and the fanservice in both series (excellent analogy btw👌🏽). I still like Soul Eater and S1 and 2 of Fire Force, but I truly could have done without all of the lewd stuff🤦🏽 served no real purpose to me. Tamaki deserves so much better
I disagree with some of your critiques of Soul Eater. I think your critique about the original premise basically being bait is fair, and I totally agree with your complaints about fanservice and how the pilot episodes should've been rewritten (hopefully this is done is a potential reboot), but in regards to the worldbuilding and Maka's fight with Medusa not being a satisfying pay off, I have to disagree. I don't think the point of many of the settings being right life locations is meant to tie them into the narrative. The world is intentionally designed to be this Halloweentown-like world. So to see real life locations portrayed in this whimsical, imaginative world is fascinating. It's like looking into an alternate, fantasy reality of the real world. As for Maka vs Medusa, that fight in my opinion, is one of the best moments in all of Soul Eater, manga included. In both the manga and the anime, we constantly see the hatred between Maka and Medusa building throughout the story, but only in the anime does that buildup actually lead to the fight that the manga heavily teased. So seeing Maka finally completely lose it on such a lovably hate-able villain like Medusa was so satisfying to watch. I was so disappointed when they didn't fight in the manga, which is part of what I consider to be Soul Eater's truly worst flaw in Baba Yaga Castle. The fact that Maka and Soul acquire their 99th soul egg right after the Arachne fight. Arachne was Maka's greatest victory yet. She killed her first witch, and got the witch egg she failed to acquire back in episode 1. So why didn't she acquire her 99th soul egg before Baba Yaga Castle started, leaving Arachne to be the last one left to make Soul a death scythe? That would've added so much more weight to that fight. But that's not all. The moment Medusa betrays Maka and Soul was the perfect to moment for all the hatred between them to reach it's climax and started a plot twist final battle, which Soul unlocking his death scythe form right there, in that moment. But she runs away like a coward, which is very out of character for her, because she loves to taunt people, and she never runs away from a fight. And with Arachne's body, Medusa was shown to possess both her snakes, and Arachne's webs. A power combination that we never got to see utilized in the story. Not running away and fighting was the perfect opportunity for flex her new powers. A plot twist final battle of Maka vs Medusa, with both of them unlocking brand new power levels was a golden opportunity totally wasted. Plus, I don't think it's fair to judge Soul Eater's anime filler because it isn't part of the canon story, and it undermines a lot of manga content after it.
I apppreciate your comment! Starting with world building, I fully agree that the locations of Soul Eater were intentionally designed to be that "Alternate, Fantasy Reality" as you said and I have no qualms with that. However I dont think that Bizarre locations and tying in the narrative are mutually exclusive. I think in the manga one of my favorite moments of world building is right before Buttataki Joe dies when he sees all the different people around Death City and how they were being affected by the madness, showing how present and looming the madness was, and I just wish the rest of Soul Eaters locations did small things like this that point to the overarching story. As for your second point I think thats just a small misunderstanding. I also love the Maka v Medusa fight, its one of the few reasons I appreciate the anime original ending (I wouldnt consider it filler because the anime never picks back up on the manga story, so its canon specifically to the anime). My Point was specifically about Maka showing up at Medusa's lair at the last second. because of the unclear world building theres no tension in Maka getting from Baba Yaga Castle to Medusa's Lair. Let me explain this as Scenario A and Scenario B, where Scenario A is exactly as it happens in the anime, but Scenario B sets up that Maka is X miles away and theres an X amount of traps/enemies outside Medusa's lair. Then, as Medusa starts to overwhelm Crona, in both scenarios, we the audience start to feel the anticipation that if Maka doesn't show up in time, Crona will Die, but Scenario B is more Tense because we understand Where maka is and what she and soul have to go through to get there, where as in Scenario A she just... shows up. not inherently bad, but could have been a lot more if the world building had done more to establish what maka was doing in the lead up to her last second save. Thank you again for your comment! I always appreciate when people take time to discuss with me, and I think your idea of Soul becoming a death scythe during baba yaga castle is really interesting!
@@Tsumamii In that case, I agree with you. Especially, about Maka suddenly showing up. The moment she jumps in would've been so much sweeter if there was more building from us actually seeing her travel to her lair. Damn, I wish they fought in the manga. Why didn't it happen? Pain.
You’ve definitely been told this beforehand, but, and from what ive heard, Tamaki sadly doesn’t get any better. In fact she only gets worse from what I’ve been told. Tamaki is sadly one of the biggest reasons why I’ve been struggling to watch or even read Fire Force. @@zemox2534 ok that’s a bit too far, more like his work is only really that much enjoyable if you’re just getting into anime or if you’re of a young but still old enough demographic.
