Ive installed UV sanitation in air handlers and in medical rooms. Even if that wand had the correct wavelengths it just doesn’t have the intensity required for that short exposure time. I just test products to see if their claims match real world applications. So in this case I tested the claims that the UV wand can remove bacteria. And we can all see the results! Thank you for watching and commenting!!
The way the use of uv light was explained to me, by a waste water treatment worker is that the light inhibits the ability of the bacteria to reproduce, not kill bacteria.
That makes sense-since UV light is literally radiation damage, and radiation damage destroys DNA, leaving cells too damaged to divide. (I heard a story about a Japanese man with radiation poisoning where his tissues _'unalived'_ at different rates because none of his cells could replicate-the DNA inside them was mush. Yikes.) So, commercially, these wands might be misleading-they're not really sanitizers; they're more like inhibitors and probably should be used to maintain an already sterilized area. Nice, I feel like I learned something from your comment!
I cannot tell if you removed the top of the dish, or not, before using the light. Shining it through the closed top would make a huge difference. Thank you for testing the UV wand.

These test result didn't seem so bad to me. I was kind of impressed how much it reduced bacteria in only 10 seconds. You need much longer exposure times to get drinking water to an acceptable log reduction when using portable devices. The longer tests sounded like they were done on bacteria that's already colonized, which UV wouldn't have an effect on, but that doesn't matter when it comes to disease.
I give this video 10 out of 5 stars-do you have any hypothesis or possible explanation for why it seemed to work relatively well on sink areas but nowhere else?

They sell UV light boxes to put your phone into, but if you could turn on wand and hanging it over your laptop, leave it on a timer for say 10 minutes when you come back from launch your laptop has had a good cleaning 2) They do sell UV lights to stick to the lid of your toilet, I do think this will prove to be a good additional toilet cleaner, because every time you close the lid the light comes on to clean... But I do think they could make a good addition
I hope my tone comes off as inquisitive, not obnoxious, but after watching this video, why do you think UV light is useful at all? From what I gathered, UV light as a sterilizer seems rather gimmicky-at least for the commercial wands you can buy. Industrial UV lights used in labs are probably very effective as they do use them, but the consumer versions don’t seem functional, yeah?
@@shoe_thompsanowell UV light is germicidal. It's just that wand thing is nonsense. It'd be like throwing a cup of water on a bonfire and then saying that water must not work since it didn't put it out.
@@shoe_thompsano It is all about the amount of time and the intensity of the light. You are not going to stand around holding a UV light over something for an hour. But for places in your home that do get dirty often you could say add a UV light permanently and turn it on for an hour after you have finished doing what ever. So for example, I just saw yesterday a UV light toothbrush holder and cleaner. Now if that UV light is on your toothbrush all day then it most likely would clean it. But if it is on for 30 seconds than it would not do anything
I think the decrease that was seen in the bathroom and kitchen sink is really related to the fact that before the UV wand was used you cleaned the area with the cotton-tipped applicator. You really covered almost the entire area with that swab. Otherwise, if it worked

In early 2020 I bought one of these wands to sanitize keys and buttons on PCs and printers I worked on, but I found the application wanting. Not enough time and too easy to expose eyes to the light accidentally. However, I soon after bought one of the box style units for my phone, keys, etc. and I still use it for 15 or 30 minutes on anything I accidentally drop on the floor (think remotes). I also bought one of the standing lamps and weekly move it from room to room/spot to spot and run it 30 or 45 or 60 minutes in each area, generally on trash day after everything has been gathered/bagged/removed. A proper UVC lamp will do the job and quickly, but they are too dangerous for casual use. I've found via testing (lab grad spectrometer) that none of the LED type are as good as the claims. My lab utilizes high power gas discharge type UV lamps that can sterilize surfaces at great distances and generate ozone. The only downside is having to wait a few minutes for the ozone to return to safe levels. It breaks down from O3 to O2 quite quickly.

That's disappointing, i figured it would have a better effect. Would've been useful around household medical equipment and produce. Thanks for testing it. Does it say what wavelength it is? should say something nm.
For my Philips UV lamp, it has a 15-minute exposure mode and 30, 45 minutes for larger rooms. I think that exposure for a few seconds is not helpful and the power of the portable lamp is too low. Finally, the UV light cannot penetrate even a little bit such as glass or plastic.
Different machines will have different directions. I followed the directions for this wand. Hopefully as my channel grows and I earn more money I will be able to purchase a variety of UV products and do a larger scale test!
Heya! From what I understand visible and UV light are in different parts of the spectrum , so they don’t interfere with each other. They have different energy levels and wavelengths, so no overlap occurs. If you're making very precise measurements (like a physics level experiment), visible light might affect the results because it bounces back and acts as noise. In those cases, controlling light in your environment is important. But on a molecular level, there shouldn't be any significant interference.
Could the light's ineffective results on the Petrie dish samples and toilet rim have something to do with the type of bacteria? Just guessing here -- thank you!
It almost seemed like it was most effective on hard surfaces. But you’re right the toilet rim didn’t change much and that would be a hard surface as well.
Unfortunately, based on the color of the light produced, it is not producing UV-C which is a light blue color. That being said, using UV-C lamps, you need proper skin and eye protection as it is dangerous
Or maybe it's just the overall amount? Maybe there's just a crap ton (pun intended) more bacteria on a toilet compared to a sink? After all I've heard that anywhere from 25%-50% of stool is actually bacterial mass.
Uvc doesn't make bacteria disappear, what were you trying to achieve? I thought you were going to check if they were still viable or made inert after uvc. You just checked if they disappeared. is this a joke?
For the record, yes, uc-c works quit well as ling as you're using correct n number like 850 nm vs 750 nm. UVC (100-280 nm). Short-wavelength UVC is the most damaging type of UV
I was testing it because it is marketed as being able to remove bacteria. The product claim is that is removes bacteria. I tested the product claim. Not a joke. Just testing the claim.
I used a UV wand during COVID on mail and packages. Also during COVID hospitals and airlines used huge UV lamps that are turned on and no one in the area as it sanitizes the area. Maybe the time nada to be greater or maybe some UV lamps are more in tense, but I think of it like a portable sun. You’ve already tested laundry hung out to dry in the sun and know that the sun sanitizes. Of course laundry hangs in the sun much longer than 10 seconds.
Ugh, I bought two lights during c19 and they turned out to be 4" long for the entire thing so the actual light is teeny. Ridiculous waste of money so they're in the back of the junk drawer taking up room.
For me, this UV lamp isn't worth it, but there may be other brands that work better. In labs we have UV lights in the hoods, so I know that UV works, but do these at home wands work as well as hospital grade, no.

What about the UV light on black mold?
I cannot say because I didn't test that!
That's disappointing, i figured it would have a better effect. Would've been useful around household medical equipment and produce. Thanks for testing it. Does it say what wavelength it is? should say something nm.
The packaging did not say the wavelength. I will test more UV products over time! Thanks!
Have you done video checking packages for germs, etc. We all know amazon, etc. can be dirty but what about the world of microbes????
I haven't, but will add that to my viewer suggestion list!!! That sounds fun!
Could it possibly work if the petri would not have the lid?
I did test that and it yielded the same results.. thanks for asking, sorry I forgot to mention that in the video.
Can you test Crown Kleen wipes for hats?
I will add that to my viewer suggestion list!
In a way I’m very surprised, since we know sunlight is very good for killing bacteria on laundry. Guess you just need the real deal! 😉

This wand just isn't it!! Others may be better, I just was able to test this one!

Could visible light be interfering with the UV light? Maybe using it in a dark room would be helpful?
This product does not produce UV-C which is what is necessary to sterilize. Amazon has poor regulation on their products.
@feraacedia1825 EXACTLY!
I don't think so. I think the UV in this wand is just not strong enough.
Always a possibility!

First like, first comment!
Thanks for being the first commenter!
I would never trust these devices. If you are worried, wipe the surface down with the appropriate cleaning agent.
I’m sorry I rather spray bleach and wipe clean😊
That is always an option! I test all sorts of cleaning products!
Unfortunately, the wand in the video is fake and does not produce UV-C which is the sterilizing light
Ugh, I bought two lights during c19 and they turned out to be 4" long for the entire thing so the actual light is teeny. Ridiculous waste of money so they're in the back of the junk drawer taking up room.
@@ICHope1 the uv lights inhibited the ability of the organisms to reproduce.
For me, this UV lamp isn't worth it, but there may be other brands that work better. In labs we have UV lights in the hoods, so I know that UV works, but do these at home wands work as well as hospital grade, no.
@feraacedia1825 Exactly!

I agree... but it was a viewer suggestion!
