Bowie had a heart attack on tour in 05. He immediately retired to raise his young daughter with Iman. He avoided attention for 10 yrs. Then, without anyone having a clue. He dropped this odd reflective song followed by a full album. The song is a walk down memory lane from his days in Berlin. A huge part of his career blossomed there.
The 20,000 people ref in the song is when Bowie played Berlin during the Glass Spider tour, apparently 20,000 people were on the other side of the wall listening to him but couldn’t get to see him
I hear you fellow friend of life. I'm drunk tonight .6 months later from your post. I'm in my fifties. I understand and don't understand why I drink. We either quit or we aim for moderation. Now, I know myself... Take care mate. There are people that love you. And be kind to yourself. Last thought, "might forces will come to your aid". I'm not a believer. Just trust in the living and the dead as David talks about. Peace, love and understanding. x
Album, The Next Day. Unknown to most, Bowie now knew he had liver cancer. This is one of Iman's favorites, and she knew her man. David comments on the world and his life. Especially Iman ... as long as there's you. Tears.
He went back to Berlin as he was already sick to record his last album, we still put flowers every year the day he passed in front of the flat he shared with Iggy. He was part of the culture here, .especially his concert against the wall where thousands of east germans were listening '(he mentions it in the song "20 000 people", includes both sides). A truly special artist for all his songs
Excellent choice. David lived in Berlin in the late 70's and recorded the Berlin Trilogy (Low, Heroes, and Lodger) there with Tony Visconti and Brian Eno. This song was the first thing he'd recorded after ten years staying out of the business and expresses nostalgia for the Berlin years. It's so bittersweet, isn't it?
This song really hit me before he died and then boom it really hits since he passed. Thanks for this. Someone else mentioned Slip Away. It's fucking amazing. Anthemic in the choruses. You'll love it Pope. 😎
Thanks for reviewing. As others have mentioned, this is Bowie reflecting on his time in Berlin. Please listen to Subterraneans from the album Low, first of the Berlin trilogy. Its hauting and beautiful and unlike any Bowie song you have listened to in your journey so far.
This song wonderfully captures the feeling when Germany was still divided. The feeling when you had to go through military control in the GDR to get to West Berlin, constantly fearing that you had done something wrong. Therefore: “fingers are crossed” hoping that everything goes well. This dark mood corresponded to David's situation back when he came to Berlin completely exhausted and addicted to drugs to give his life a new direction. Thank you for choosing this song. "everyone says hi" is also a very beautiful song about giving your life a new direction. It accompanied me when I left everything behind and emigrated.
Ned from Spain saying thank you for choosing this incredible song. It's from 2013 but when I heard it played right after his death the wife and I kept crying , same with the Blackstar album. He already sounds worn out and wounded especially his voice. The band really give it a ton of passion, the drumming is phenomenal. The Next Day is for us, a masterpiece at the close of an astounding career. Other songs like " Stars are out Tonight" " Valentines Day" " I'd Rather be High" and more. We still really miss you David Bowie.
It was the lead single off his 2nd to last album The Next Day in 2013. He’s looking back at his Berlin period, which is regarded by many as his greatest achievement. To me, the song is asking us fans who’ve been with him since that time to look back and remind ourselves of those days and what it is about Bowie that captured us.
Thank you ,my friend ,great reaction. Well said. it took you awhile to get him but i remeber when you did and now you glow when you visit David ,like we all do .......... Peace and love
Off the album The Next Day. He released this single in his birthday. It reflects on his time spent living in Berlin in the 70’s with Iggy Pop and the places the frequented. I love that you have discovered his music/art. I was lucky to have seen him on so many occasions and he never failed to deliver. Enjoy the journey. Keep up your fantastic work mate. George(UK).👨🎤👨🎤👨🎤
Love your reaction to this song. Thanks for expressing your feelings. This song is hopeful n sad all at once. Keep checking out Bowie! Lots to find. I first saw him live in 1972 and saw every tour since. He always wins over the audience. Personable, a great entertainer, n amazing imaginative song writer. His bands and collaborators are the best. You mentioned setting goals to reach in life. Bowie did this and achieved his goals to the end. Thank you for sharing. Check out Blackstar, his last record. Came out just before he passed. Very heavy record. I agree you'd probably Tin Machine. For something diff ck him out on the tour w/Nine Inch Nails. They traded out who headlined shows on that tour. Saw it 2×.
Hi Pôpe! Congrats : you must be the first one to react to this gem on TH-cam :D ! You're right : the museum analogy keeps working with this song. Although here, you could say you are in the "Memoria aisle" of the exhibition. I recently took the habit of creating thematic playlists on YT (rather than based on specific artists). One of them is called "Nostalgia". This song was one of the first to make it on the playlist...
Thanks for another Bowie reaction! I always wait for your reactions on David and my day gets better. Please react to the songs: Slip Away, It's No Game, and : The Loneliest Guy 🙂
@@emander8340 Yes! I saw him 3 times live. Two times in Germany in 1996, and one time in Denmark in 97. Unfortunately, I didn't go to his early 2000 concerts because i didn't expect him to stop, get a heart attack or anything like it. I wish now that i went in 2002 or 2004 to his London concerts because i lived in London at the time. I also like 'I Would Be Your Slave '. I always tried to figure out of if it was for God or for Iman 😄. I have been following Pope since he does David Bowie on here and watched all his Bowie videos. Wish he would do another album reaction. 😊 I like the Heathen album or the Scary Monsters album would be great for him to do.
@@anjav77 ah I only got to see him the once though I got on stage with and have a letter from Iggy Pop from '93. Bowie is my all time hero though. I have a tattoo of him. Heathen is so good. I think his later albums stack up as every bit as good as the classics. Heathen is up there for me. Scary Monsters is a masterpiece of course. Up the Hill Backwards is my favourite. 😎
A few words remind us of David's times in Berlin. There was a brief period when he felt at home there. The "Böse Brücke" ( böse = engl. evil) was named after the resistance fighter Wilhelm Böse and only became known on the day the Wall fell in '89 when the first German sisters and brothers crossed it (via Bornholmer Str.) to the west. No matter what is written today, as a westerner I am glad that this association exists and I hope that it continues to exist! Thanks @Pope for sharing this beautiful David Bowie song and best wishes @all from Hamburg (Germany)
hi Pope I have a Bowie related song for you. when Bowie lived in Berlin he co-wrote two albums with Iggy Pop. Those albums are to many Bowie fans an important part/extension to his own triology. the song: NIGHTCLUBBING, Iggy Pop

Thank you for doing this. Such an amazing piece of music which allowed us to let him go. He left us with so much. There's a great song that he did live that has felt so much like he was giving us a moment to say goodbye and let us know that it's alright. "Everyone Says Hi". You might try it, although it will break your heart. th-cam.com/video/VjQba4kPRBA/w-d-xo.html

Bowie didn’t know he had cancer during the release of The Next Day. (Released in 2013).

"Earthling", David Bowie's best album, in. my book. The only album that I have of his and the only one that I like.

This whole album is fantastic.
For me it was a real return to form, and up their with some of his best.
Reflection song from David. He was aware of his mortality and reviewing his past in the mid 70s Berlin

I couldn't listen to the wrong song as I'm mourning the loss of my beloved dog...and I loved Bowie so much and knew what he was telling us. 💔

Thanks! You never listen to the 1997 video for "I Can't Read" which came out on his 50th birthday VHS. Do it. 1997 video Thanks!

Brilliant requests. My first time hearing the loneliest guy was when I watched him live in '03. Slip Away is one of my all time favourites by him.
