This is easily the best guide to Medellin I've seen on this platform (I have spent a great deal of time viewing all things Medellin here). The breadth of topics of interest to anyone who would want to visit, particularly as it relates to long term visits, is top notch. You really spent a good amount of time on each topic, and I enjoyed it so much that I immediately shared it with my wife. Thanks very much for the hard work I'm sure it was to put together all the video and information. Subscribed. Cheers from Oceanside, California.
Hey Guys, you have done the best video commentary on Medellin that I’ve seen. I got more out of this than I have 10 others together. I’ve been there three different times over the years, and each time was better than the first time. I was traveling alone all three times so not as much fun as if you’re traveling with somebody else. I’ve always stayed in El plablo... I live in the US and considering colombia as a possible place to live. I am of retirement age but I still do things and I’m real active. Thanks again for the excellent video. I’ve subscribe to you now and I will watch all your videos. Cheers, Michael
Thanks so much for the kind words, Michael! This video was a big project to take on, editing through hours of clips from our time spent there. I'm glad to hear you got so much out of it. Medellin is definitely a great city to live in and it's no surprise that it's a popular retirement destination. Best of luck if you decide to make the move!
I think it's great your spending time in Medellin, my parents are from Colombia and you're in at the right time. Colombia right now is really great, I myself may retire to Colombia when I reach that age. Really great vid you guys!
Thanks a lot for the kind words! We absolutely love Medellin (and Colombia overall) and have already been a few times. It wasn't so much fun during the intense lockdown last year so we left to go stay with family in the US and are now back in Mexico, but we can't wait to get back down there when things open up again! Hope you make it there some day as well!
I live in colombia right now and all of my expenses are $325.00 a month, I'm staying in San Martin-Meta a very nice small town in the llanos, south east of Bogota
Love this publication on this nice Colombia city Medelin, very interested, i never went there yet, but love to watch the different sites, the city lies between 2 big mountains i saw.....I learn and see much about this nice Colombia city, thanks for this all usefull information........ I am watching from Paramaribo, Suriname....
It’s been almost a year since we got stuck and had to leave on a humanitarian flight back to the US. We miss it too. Hoping to return sooner than later. Thanks for watching!
Nice presentation guys. Very accurate information. I´m also a digital nomad living in Laureles. I´ve been living in Medellin since February 2018. I love it here. Hopefully, we can cross paths when you get back in town. I´m looking forward to more of your videos.
Thanks so much, Greg! That's awesome! Medellin is definitely high on our list of places to return to. Let's definitely try to meet up whenever we can come back :)
I’ve owned an apartment in Medellin for 12 years now, having met my Colombian wife there 10 years ago. We stay often longterm, but I have one criticism of life there. There is nothing gringo to do. Maybe hiking is ok but you have to travel for any other activity you like to do outside in the States. Swimming, fishing, hunting, etc. Still, Medellin is very cheap, the people are nice and the wife’s family is great. Thanks for your video.
That's a fair point. There definitely isn't as much to do there as there is in many other cities. That's awesome you've spent so much time there. Surely you've seen lost of change over the years!
Thanks! Apparently int'l flights will resume on September 1st. We decided to leave on a humanitarian flight to come spend time with family back in the US instead of being on lockdown but may head back this fall!
@@gratefulgnomads That makes sense! I actually decided to ride out Corona in Da Nang, Vietnam. Very happy with my choice -Vietnam has had a great response, plus it's just an awesome place. But those South America vibes are calling!
@@eddiewheeler5013 sounds like a great choice! We spent a month traveling Vietnam in 2013 but only passed through Da Nang en route to Hoi An. It certainly wasn't the digital nomad hot spot back then! It's high on our list when travel opens back up... actually we were planning to go there this fall but that's looking rather unlikely at this point!
Nice informative vid. I spent a week when travelling last week in Medellin and fell in love with it. I'm planning on moving there after Xmas. What neighbourhood would you recommend for having a dog? parks, green spaces etc.
Hi, Gary! Thanks for the kind words :) Poblado and Laureles are two of the most popular areas for gringos and they both have plenty of green spaces for dogs to run around. Envigado is another popular option but we never made it there to check it out. You could join one of the Facebook groups for Medellin and ask questions in there. Hope this helps!
Thanks for the kind words! We left on a humanitarian flight back to the US during lockdown but are keeping an eye on the situation there. Things are starting to open back up again and people can at least go outside every day for exercise if they want. Previously when we were there we could only leave once or twice a week for essentials. There are still no commercial flights running and they won't start until September from what we've heard.
It's a beautiful place you guys have. I am seriously considering retiring to Colombia by October 2021. How would go about getting housing accomodations?
Hi Sam! We've had success in Medellin using a mixture of Airbnb and Facebook groups. We linked to a few of those groups in the video description. Definitely join those and post what you're looking for before you head down there!
Hi Mike! Thanks so much for reminding me. I went and added links to 3 useful FB groups in the video description. Those have all been very helpful for us!
Great video. I am planning on moving there in August but I have lived in 18 countries so just jumping in does not scare me that much. I draw veterans benefit that more than meets their retirement visa requirements and my hope is if I like it I will apply for one of those. I have been to almost all Asian countries but they are all shut down now. Finally, I think the weather there would be good for my health.
Sounds like a great plan! We have a friend who is there now and said everything is open and functioning mostly as normal. We hope to get back next year! Best of luck in the move!!
@@gratefulgnomads Yeah no vaccine requirement or quarantine. I am contemplating getting the vaccine only because its the only way I am going to get into a lot of countries I want to go to
Generally Medellin is pretty safe. There are definitely rough patches of the city, though, and petty theft is a big concern everywhere. We've never had an issue there but know people who have been robbed. You just gotta have your wits about you and not be flashy. We take the subway a lot (never seemed to figure out the bus...) and use ride share apps when going out at night.
Well done! I'm an 8 year veteran frm the States and loving it. For Newbies, more or less, you guys have captured the best of living here. Really $800/month? Nice apt but maybe a bit expensive... uhh then again, in Ponlado maybe not. I live on the Belen/Laureles border... Less expensive, most of the amenities and La Setenta for the Lleras vibe. AGAIN, thanks!!!
You're welcome! So glad you enjoyed the video! Yes, that apartment was right on the Golden Mile so we were definitely paying for the location which was great until COVID hit and we were stuck inside. We also found it on Airbnb as it was meant to be a short-term rental. It wasn't a very well furnished place so it wasn't that comfortable to stay in all day long. We had an awesome view and a balcony, at least!
Nice video, Did you guys spend the whole quarantine in Medellin? I left the day before they closed the airports. I have heard rumors that crime has increased since then. Is there any truth to the rumors from what you've seen?
Hi, Christian! So glad you liked the video. No, we didn't spend the whole quarantine in Medellin. We took a humanitarian flight back the US. We've also heard that crime has increased but we're not there so can't confirm.
Thank you I was living in Medellín last year, January thru April when I had to depart cause of Covid. I’m ready to return for a longer permanent time. How bad is the Covid problem and restrictions now? Thank you O how do I search Medellín Facebook groups?
We were there during lockdown and left in April as well. We're back in Mexico now but keep an eye on the situation in Medellin as well. Seems like they are back into lockdown, or at least they were over the weekend. There are usually updates in the Medellin Digital Nomads group on Facebook so you should check that out. Best of luck with the decision!
Thanks so much Jorge! It means a lot to get a nice comment from a Paisa! We love Medellin and will definitely be back again and again. Rachel has already been 3 times now!
It was a one month agreement for a fully furnished apartment with all utilities included in a good area. If you are willing to sign a year-long lease in an unfurnished place, you can certainly find something much cheaper.
@@gratefulgnomads I live in Phnom Penh, Cambodia and $850 will get you a luxury 1 bedroom here, with a pool and gym. Last year I rented an Airbnb studio here in a luxury condo, pool, gym, WiFi, fully furnished, everything included for $300 for a month.
Lots of two bedroom townhouses here for $200 to $300 a month and even cheaper outside the city or in other cities like Siem Reap or Kampot. You can get 2 bedroom furnished villas in Siem Reap for $300 to $400 a month. $850 you can get a big villa furnished with a pool.
