    Not resetting the music when you die in the Ginso Tree Escape is actually a genius idea from the game designers: Flow over sync.

    I don't agree about music not resetting being a missed opportunity. If they reset the music on death, player would fall out of rhythm and it would be harder to focus again. Since the music doesn't stop the player stays in the rhythm and can recover from failure quicker. And since the PLAYER is still in sync with music, trigger points are synced generically to the track's rhythm rather than specific segment and the water flow speed is rubber-banded rather than on rails, everything falls back into sync immediately after respawn.

      I like the continuous music much better as it tells me to keep trying.

      agreed. In my first playthrough it probably took me over an hour to beat it. I was just there having fun and allowing myself to be in trance on that music. I dont think you can be in trance if you keep getting interrupted lol. I have played the level at least 15 times and i have never noticed it was in sync with the action. The continuous music and gameplay together really made it unlike anything else i have ever played

      To me I find the music uplifting especially this one. I bought the game about three or four days ago and today I beat it. Now that being said I didn't 100% it. But it's definitely a song that is good to listen to. Yes it does inspire me to keep trying. I'm really excited for the sequel too!

      I agree. He talks about flow but not stopping the music kinda forces the player back into the flow of the game instead of just giving the flow back to the player by restarting it

    I understand what you mean about how the track resetting might make a successful escape feel more cohesive, but I for one am very glad it just keeps going. For one thing, resetting to the very powerful opening of the track every time you die would become grating very easily. And for another thing, it ends up feeling rather hopeful and encouraging; like the game *knows* you're going to die (which…yeah, the devs probably did) and is telling you "it's fine, just keep going, I'll keep going too".

      That last sentence really hits home the sentiment I was feeling. It gives you power because you begin to feel like the game believes in you and is stirring you on to complete the challenge. Rather than take away a feeling of continuity, it gives you more energy and something to fight for. I love channels that stimulate quality, thought-provoking discussions like these on TH-cam.

      It also maintains the gameplay’s flow. Other games, there’s a chase sequence that relies on you going fast and staying excited, but if you fail, there’s a loading screen and music resets, and all that intensity just kinda breaks off. The immediate restarts and continuation of the music ensure the excitement is still there alongside the point you already gave.

    I completely disagree about the continuous looping being bad. When you die in the Ginso tree, the continuity of the music serves as a kick in the ass to keep going. The music doesn't stop, so neither will you, essentially. It's psychologically brilliant, and it works. If the music kept being reset, I may have been demotivated or annoyed and put down the controller. That isn't to say I would have necessarily given up if the music reset, but the continuous flow of music only serves to push you.

      Couldn't agree more, the music continuing to flow was what made that sequence so memorable. I am beyond glad the music didn't reset anytime you failed. It motivated me to keep going if anything.

    In mark Browns video about the ginzo tree he talks about why the Music dosent reset in the ginzo tree escape its basically so it dosent feel anticlimactic and make the whole part feel like 1 long section even if you die

      Yep. It's also helped by Ori's short respawn time -- i.e. no loading screen. In fact, for the most part getting killed NEVER resets the BGM, which means you always get to hear the track in its entirety and without interruption.

    This is that good shit, as always man. The Ginso Tree Escape was easily the moment that sold me on why Ori is so great, as I'm sure it did for most people, the way it flows is just so perfect, I agree now that you've pointed it out not having the level be perfectly timed upon death misses a really cool opportunity but that also means it's a dope ass reward for anyone that manages to get it first shot, plus I don't mind that song looping cause its so good.

      +HeavyEyed it should be a really frustrating section, but I only ever felt encouraged because the music is so hopeful. It seriously improves the level so much, even outside of everything mentioned in the video.

    Using you're "Flow" analogy, the start of the Ginso Tree escape starts with a slow almost somber flow, but builds up quickly to a fast paced and epic flow and this is almost entirely based of the music. If the music was to reset when the player respawned, The flow would break in a jarring motion, like water hitting a wall, knocking the player out of focus and making this escape frustrating as they would need to go through the flow progression again. The way it is designed is masterful keeping the player in focus and enjoying the entire sequence, including the deaths.
    It just ... flows.

    I think resetting the music would be counterproductive you the game's flow. When you die, you go back instantly to the bottom and can try again, and the player is still in the heat of the moment. Restarting the track would take the player out of their concentration and break the immersion. Plus, this gives an extra incentive/cool reward for players to get it on their first try in future runs

    The cadence of the Ginso Tree escape is very much rewarding!!!! I died a lot of times, and yet the music keeps of kicking in the momentum to let you push through. Music is one of those pushed me to keep exploring other stages hehe

    Has anybody noticed that during the escape, the music absolutely overruns the game's UI? So that you hear just the music? It is a great idea to enforce the flow without being distrupted by the sound of every bash.
    P. S. The non-reseting music also enforces the flow, since you are syncing constantly and it just keeps going, as you do.

    This game has fantastic musical direction! In the Definitive Edition, if you play through the Lost Grove area organically (without stalling or dying an unreasonable amount of times), the track "A Closer Understanding of the Past" will swell to a climax and end just as you unlock and run inside of Naru's room. No looping or synchronizing involved, they just fine-tuned the level's length to match with music. This blew my mind the first time I played, and opened my eyes to how much effort went into the little details.

      imo the running away from water wasn't that difficult, nor was the level design too complex; but for some reason wall climbing followed by a wall jump too often resulted into just falling down instead of jumping. will of the wisps imo had a much smoother control experience.

    OMG, the spirit caverns. I noticed that the music changed as I was hopping from wall to wall, dodging projectiles--that freakin' flute, man! I didn't know how they did it, but it just fit perfectly!

    I absolutelt adore the way you frame the cobtext of your videos in order to convey a message or a revelation. Music has always meant a lot to me, especially the movie and video game scores.
    Lately I've become more and more intrigued with in-depth analyses of these phenomenons and channels such as yours really bring a spark of joy into my everyday life. And I really want to thank you for that. I know that your channel is still rather new and such but if you happen to run out of ideas in the near future, doing a video on Undertale if possible would be really neat as it's a game which music has kept me motivated many-a-times.

      No but seriously thanks, I put a lot of effort into the writing and structure of my scripts and it's sometimes hard because I'm not a particularly practiced or trained writer, and I've never really had anyone edit my work in any sort of critical way.     Ginso Tree is the best escape in the whole game, hands down. I did it at the perfect time; it was raining outside, my A/C was blowing lightly almost like water mist, and the music was just brilliant. Despite how many times I died during that bit, I was exhilarated and blown away the entire time. The other escapes are great too, but go nowhere near this one.

    I just got this game after it was recommended to me. I can't believe I was missing out.
    I just finished this section last night and I love everything about this game so far. The flow in the Ginso Tree keeps the tension high by keeping the music looping even after a death.
    I think it's because at this point, you know what to look forward to and if the soundtrack were to restart, you might be lulled into a false sense of security or lose the momentum of the escape.
    Honestly, I did not question the soundtrack not restarting as you restarted the sequence. It felt natural.
    It's like when game designers decide whether or not to put a cutscene before a bossfight. Or whether that cutscene is skippable or not. In a game like this, it would break the pace each time.
    I was kept on my toes from start to finish, even having to take a break in between. But in the end it was so satisfying to finally arrive at the end. The following scene where the water turns clear and the music accompanying this makes you return to a state of being calm and curious again for more exploration.
    Honestly I could go on but I can safely say, this game is amazing!

    I say this all the time: Ginso tree was the first time that I felt like the game wasn't making fun of me. It was encouraging me. And the music not resetting when I died was a big part of that. Ori is all about hope, light, life. Encouragement gives those things.
    Will have to try to play in time with the music sometime. This isn't the first time I've heard that it can be done.

    I hope you talk about the soundtrack of Will of the Wisps at some point, specifically "Ori, Embracing the Light", because it uses samples from at least three tracks from Blind Forest to show that the end of Will of the Wisps mirrors Blind Forest. And it's just a great way to end the soundtrack.
    The same opening notes of "The Sacrifice" on a different key. The same notes from the middle of "Inspiriting", where the Spirit Tree was revealed, as the new Spirit Tree sprouts. And the same singing from "Lost in the Storm", when Ori was pulled from the Spirit Tree, as a new Tree Spirit is born.

    The music doesn't reset each death because of how often you die in this game (until you've played full through a couple times), and that resetting the music brings attention to it. I read this somewhere.
    Also, I think you're looking too deeply into the music aligning with Ori's movements in the escape sequence, as just a split second action difference negates the effect, though I'm unsure enough to want to hear a developer about it.
    It is otherwise great music, that track being one of my two favorite of the game. I love cranking the sound up during the Ginso escape sequence.

    Really interesting video! The concepts you bring up in here remind me a lot of the newer Rayman games, which I've definitely also wound up playing "to the beat".
    Just to be "that guy" who nitpicks a bit: "flow" is actually a term which has a specific meaning around game design - it is the concept from positive psychology that essentially describes when a person is "in the zone" - and while I think there's definitely a relation to what you're talking about, I'd like to see another name for everything you're talking about in here so that it can get discussed more, and hopefully we can see more of it in games! :D

    At the end of Abzu there's a moment like this as well with the music swelling and the player wanting to play in time with it. It's the same kind of magic feeling that I think you're talking about here, it's one of the reasons I enjoyed that game so much. The bits of soundtrack you played in this video really have me wanting to go listen to the whole thing! Really great stuff, as always.

      Game Score Fanfare Yeah i get what you mean. I dunno if you've played Allan Wake, but the soundtracks in that game were so perfect for the game. In a way, that game turned me on to David Bowie's music.

    Awesome video. Personally I loved the fact that the music never stopped and the reason I think they did it is because it allowed you to stay in the flow. That's flow in the sense of a mental state.
    The short respawn timer allows you to have all of your attempts feel like one long level and quite rarely have I been so deeply immersed in a level for so many tries in a row. It also prevents you from stepping away and processing your emotions by throwing you into your next attempt straight away and it makes your 50th attempt just as intense as your first because - unless you pause - you're never given a real break. I always played the Ginso tree like a rhythm game too and usually ended up slowing down a little in the beginning of the level to sync myself up to the music. The pacing allows you to do that since there's no point in trying to get a head too far.

    So one thing to consider is the beauty of the Bash mechanic. Of course it is useful in movement, combat, and puzzle solving, but one of the least talked about elements is how it allows the player to pause the game, and THEY determine how long they want or need that pause to be. Which in and of itself is mind blowing since the player naturally adjusts based on skill (and is incentivized to go faster just because it FEELS good to do so), but for the purpose of the music I found myself releasing on beat without thinking about it. So at the very least it can put players back on beat without being aware of it. XD

    The first time I played this I nearly set the controller down expecting a cut scene. Boy was I wrong.
    I so rarely give a game a 10/10 as I view that as a very near a "perfect game", if there is such a thing, but I'm giving this game a 10/10.

    I think it was a wise choice to fore go the more cohesive design of linking the song to the beginning of the level.
    Anybody who has had to repeatedly play certain sections of a game and either listen to a small bit of dialogue or even just start with the soundtrack over again, knows how it adds to the frustration. Dying often would mean listening to a certain part of a song over and over again, which gets annoying quickly when you're annoyed by dying so often.
    Keeping the current loop going feels to me like a I have no time to contemplate my frustration but I can instead hang on to the music that just keeps going as if nothing happened.
    It made this part a bit more barrable and even though I died SOOO many times and was really frustrated,
    I remember that part fondly when I hear the music. It actually makes me want to play it again. In a way it really is motivating.
    Plus the developers didn't put a cutscene or anything like that before the escape but just let you get more or less right back into it. The more frustrated a player is, the better it is to let them get back into the action AQAP imo.

    Just got through this part for the first time today. It was frustrating for sure and I definitely died a bunch but I got there in the end and I'm glad I did.

    5:55 theres a fucking wall to the right above the spider. I always screwed up my run by timing things badly and missing the ball. I did not know there was a wall there. This makes my One Life runs through the Ginso Tree a little easier.

      It's funny how you can just completely miss these things. It's not like that wall is any more hidden than the others! Your brain just doesn't recognise it as an option. 😆

      I have 56 hours in Ori. I've 100%'d it once and the rest is One Life attempts. I've probably entered the Ginzo tree about 30 times (Ginzo tree is approximately 50 minutes into the game in One-Life Mode) and I haven't spotted that wall. The brain is a wonderful thing I agree :D.
      P.S. Very well articulated review. It was interesting to see my views on this game articulated so well.

    I think the music continuing is great as it keeps a sense of flow every time you die. If the music replays from the beginning each time, it would get very tedious very quickly. I never noticed the music worked in conjunction with the enemies animations. That is simply genius :)

    Absolutely fantastic. This reminds me of 2016's DOOM soundtrack, which changes whenever you're executing an enemy or you're in trouble. Maybe a video about that? I know they made a video themselves, but your videos are so good that I wouldn't mind.

    The escapes are the best part of this game. The dramatic music makes them so much better than if it was just the sound effects. I think a lot of game designers need to think more about the music. The only thing that kept me sane during the 100 times I died in each of e escapes was the epic music. And with things like boss fights, they really aren’t the same without music. Music makes games so much more vibrant and it really brings out the storyline. For example, the final boss in Risk of Rain 2 has this sad electric guitar line as you explore the area, and then the heavy guitar hits when the boss arrives. I tried playing it without the music but it just feels wrong. Music in video games is something that I think a lot of players don’t really think about until you point it out, which is a shame considering how much work gets put into the music.

    I think the non-reseting music can even be adding (un intentionally) to repleyabilty of the sequence
    on first run you'll just be amazed by the sequence
    bun on next ones you get novelty of actions syncing with the music

    There was an important reason for the music not resetting. A reset of the music implied a failure on the players part, like a director calling cut to a scene. With Ori, the music continuing told a player it was normal. Maybe you don’t get it on that attempt…but you did better that time, keep at it!

    Great video, thank you! There are plenty of good examples for what you are describing, but Ori is the perfect fit. I am always thrilled to be able to perform certain actions along with the music. In fact many plattformers are designed in a way that if you play them "on rails", meaning in a perfect flow, the music will very often fit your movement with transitions coming in the right places. A good example is Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze. The great score by David Wise shines most in Time Attack mode because it just fits the levels and this is an awesome achievement if you take into account all the other things the soundtrack delivers. And... yeah: Others have mentioned it: Go check out Mark Brown's analysis of this exact part of the game. His theory on the music not starting again when you die is pretty sound, but I also get your point of view.

    I think it's very very important that the music didn't reset with each attempt at the Ginso Tree. The escape sequences need to be repeated a lot by the average player (they took me a number of attempts at any rate) and resetting the music each time would have been jarring, giving a sort of "okay, CUT. Let's try it again, places everyone!" vibe to each go. Plus, I don't actually think the "cadence" of the level in which events are synchronized to the music is important in this context at all. Despite being a musician, I didn't notice this happening in my own playthrough, and if I did I wouldn't have ascribed intention behind it. But maybe you're right, i don't know.

    Not resetting the loop isn't something they missed out on. Ori is a very emotional game and having the music stop and reset every time you died would completely remove people from the immertion that the game has used several hours to achieve. This isn't about a complete segment, this is Moon Studios telling us that they still want you to take the game in as a whole rather than segments. They are so brilliant it blows my mind. Everything is so carefully thought out.

    The music continuing instead of resetting is an incredibly important factor to me. If it reset every time, the motivation I had from the previous run would die. However, when it continued, I was always pumped to keep going. It motivated me FAR more than if it were to reset every time, especially the number of times I died.

    i think the music going on is really cool becouse it ties the whole thing togeather. If you die there are no loading screens you just "continue at the beginning" witch makes it not really feel like dieing and it feels more like your doing it in 1 go.
    resetting t e music would seem like your starting all over again.

    I would have 10 smashed controllers if the Ginso Tree worked like a typical game sequence....with a loading screen and music reset.
    No..... I was in the flow of the game, I just got jumping again and again and again, humming along with the music that pressed me to keep going. The whole thing felt like one long sequence instead of multiple tries. Music was perfect there

    I actually like that it doesn't start over it keeps the intensity going and it would be a little annoying to hear the same beginning part. Everything else though I pretty much agree

    A lot of people have mentioned how the music not resetting upon death in the escape sequence actually makes sense... but I have a bit of additional perspective to add to that.
    Consider if you enjoyed the game so much that you replay it, possibly several times - the feeling of knowing what's coming when you get to the ginso tree escape, and getting to hear the very start of that music sequence as the water begins to rise up the first time all over again adds another layer to not restarting the track - hearing the very beginning of the track is unique to the first attempt of each story playthrough. To add one more element, consider someone playing definitive edition on one life mode... pausing for a moment before beginning the escape sequence knowing how likely it is to mean death and restarting from the beginning... hearing those vocals as the light is restored, followed by the rumble of the water and the feeling of 'oh shit, oh shit, oh shit', then the rush of that amazing music pushing you to climb faster... and then if you actually make it, it's such an amazing feeling (and then you get the purdy calm after the storm type music for a few moments that mimics you and ori chilling for a sec before the Kuro scene).
    My only disappointment with Ori is that there isn't a 'super easy' mode for people that find the challenge too hard and give up rather than getting to experience the entirety of this masterpiece.

    While you have a point about resetting the music doing so would also break the player's rhythm/flow and the frantic "The world is coming apart! Run, Ori, run!" dynamic at play in these escape sections.

    I think having the music continue when you die is important to maintaining the flow of the sequence. If it restarted it would probably get tedious. I think the music in general fits the scenario very well. Panic from the strings and drums, excitement from the piano and a sense of pride for saving the forest with the brass instruments. Best moment of the game.
