A year ago there was Bravely Default on sale on the Eshop, and I thought "why not?", and so I bought it. I lost a semester at university cause I was so taken lol
That Antonio me too, I spent all of my time on bravely default at my last undergrad semster and I failed one class lol.... But I never feel regret about this
I finished my game a month ago for the first time. I also barely slept and was late to work a couple of times. I'm afraid of playing Octopath Traveler now because I'm taking classes rn.
It's worth noting that Revo is also the guy behind the Attack on Titan openings and he does the same thing where he'll reference bits from previous ops in the new one. The 3rd op has major parts near its climax basically lifted directly from the 1st and 2nd openings, and it feels so good and absolutely epic when you hear it.
He has actually been doing much of what you mentioned in the video for a long time; his original band, Sound Horizon, exclusively made concept albums with rich, complex, intertwined stories. So he has been working with using music to enhance a story right from the beginning. "Sound Horizon" is also the namesake for the "Horizon" in the track titles on the OST, with him referring to each new album, each new story as a "new horizon". (It's also the namesake for Linked Horizon, the name his band works under for non-narrative, commercial stuff, like the aforementioned themes for TV shows.)
God, yes ... I love Ringabel's theme so much. I actually cried when I heard it in Bravely Second when ... you know. Revo is so amazing, I much prefer the Bravely Default soundtrack over Bravely Second. Not to mention that ideas like having the themes in the final boss theme again were directly borrowed from the first game and not original anymore.
Der Slendy Ryo's music isn't near that great. Revo made a detailed and ingenius score, full with great themes and performed by a live orchestra, choir and his own band Linked Horizon... Ryo's music on the other hand is synth-garbage. It has some good tunes. But overall it doesn't fit in with the pre-established musical ideas from Revo. The two scores doesn't blend well together imo. It's a shame and also a reason I don't like Bravely Second that much.
Fun fact about the character themes: they all have lyrics that tell the characters story a little! For instance, Edea's theme is about how she wants to see both sides of the conflict, and Ringabel's is about how he wants to find the girl he's forgotten about. It's pretty cool!
LoraStormBelle wow, never knew that. That’s freakin cool, gives another reason to like bravely default. But bravely second I felt had a better soundtrack even tho half of the tracks from default made it over to end layer.
God the character themes coming back in the final boss fight made me simultaneously fist pump with excitement and get major chills with feelings for the characters I had spent the whole game growing fonder of. This is what music is capable of and I adore it!
Revo is a mastermind of creating character themes and slipping them in quietly into his music. His band Sound Horizon does this constantly. Each album they produce has different stories contained in the album, different musical influences (Spanish, Greek, German classical) but he still slips references from one album into another. He has his own theme for the Greek God of Death Thanatos that has popped up in separate albums in creative ways. In the French inspired album, it was slipped into the end of a choir segment that started the song, signaling this song would involve death. This theme is also used in the Greek album, Moira, where Thanatos is a full blown character and has some influence in particular scenes. He even remixes them and changes themes if a character change has occurred or he's signaling that another character is part of this song even if they aren't explicitly stated to be. And on the Greek album, he combined rock and TRADITIONAL GREEK FOLK MUSIC and if you've heard Greek folk music, that is not easy. I grew up with the Greek church, and hearing Moira for the first time blew me away. Sometimes it makes me cry just because the melodies sound so traditionally Greek it reminds me of my childhood. What the fuck Revo.
I've never actually played Default or Second, but damn, I cried listening to this music. That's not an exaggeration, either. No joke, I actually, physically, cried, with the familiar pain in the heart that comes with when you're emotional, and trembling facial muscles and everything. I don't know if it was because of the music itself, it's meaning and significance, or your presentation of it (most likely all three), but it made me _feel_ something. Out of nowhere. Good shit.
i had the same reaction to the music when i stumbled across it some years ago! (and bought the game because of it *cough*) it's cool to see someone who reacts in a similar way to this amazing OST!
Holy heck please play this game. It is absolutely beautiful, powerful, fun, and has an amazing story. Nothing I've played has ever made me feel quite the way Bravely Default has. And it has certain story moments in which I can remember exactly how I felt even now that I look back on them. It has a lot of silent emotional cues, silent things that make me feel a certain way. This game has a great story imo, the story writing is really good, and the combat is super fun. I don't think I ever tired of grinding because of all the combat options.
Ther music is one of the main reasons why I played it. However I’ve only played Default (starting several months back) and never finished it due to my 3DS breaking near the end of the game.
I knew the heroes themes already from another video, but then here that climax medley got me honestly teary eyed too. Thanks for sharing your emotions.
It happened to me aswell even without having played it. I cried. But, oh, man. I finished the game a couple of days afo and I can assure you I cried even harder, as everything had this huge emotional background. I didn't want to finish the game because all the affection that grew on me to them. But, I also wanted to help them finish this and let them live happy. I know it may sound stupid, but that was how I felt as I was overflowed with feelings.
There's even more to this. One thing you can do from nearly the very beginning of the game is send a copy of an attack you just used over the internet to someone else's game for their use, and download their attacks to help yourself in a pinch. Obviously the best attacks to send and receive are the Special Attacks that trigger the hero themes, since it allows you to sneak a fifth timer reset onto the buffs. This seems like a cute mechanic at first, useful but not all that relevant... until Chapter 5, when you start realizing that you're travelling across parallel universes, which (if you're smart) will cause you to think again about what the Send/Receive Attack mechanic actually is in-universe. Come the final boss, where he starts holding other worlds hostage to force you to stop fighting him. THE darkest moment in the game, the battle theme even stops for a while. And that's when that medley of the character's themes suddenly kicks in for the first time, when the heroes of the other worlds, explicitly identified now as the very ones you've been sharing (hopefully) special attacks with all along, send you their power one last time right when you need it most!
This moment of the game was so freaking memorable. The BD soundtrack is just incredible, even the most forgettable areas had great music. I really love it any time a final boss theme uses a theme (usually a leitmotif) that appeared elsewhere in the game. It builds a connection between the events of the game, and that climactic final battle.
>Ringabel as Dark Knight hey wait a second All jokes aside, this is a really great video! I've always loved the soundtrack of Bravely Default (my personal favourite piece being "Wicked Flight") but I feel like this video put my feelings into words more accurately than I could ever have. Nice job!
On a brief note about Bravely Second: my favorite track from that game is "Bravely Second Main Theme." The best part is the very end, which is a snippet of "Overture to Hope," the main theme from Default. It's very telling, since while pretty good, Second's OST pales in comparison to Default's.
One of my favorite things they do with the music in Second is that Battle of Oblivion/It Will Issue Seriously is the last part of Battle of Providence. I love it because it signifies that Yew(and, to an extent, you the player) is going to deny Providence his victory. This series does some incredible stuff with its music
I so wish the character themes stayed as Unique in Bravely Second. I for the life of me can't remember any of them. If nothing else they should have kept you are my hope and baby bird.
@@Dairunt1 I think what they should've done is keep the electric guitar for Yew (since i feel like it fits his character better) and give Magnolia another insturment, maybe something like a Cetara, since that's an instrument that is apparently commonly used in traditional french music (i don't listen to a lot of traditional music except a few japanese ones, so i can't say for sure if it is or not) and since she speaks in French, and has a French accent while speaking in English, it fits her well.
You guys should check out the Linked Horizon Live Concert Blu-ray. The themes for the 4 main characters sound even better vocalised, and the lyrics are very meaningful to the characters' backstories.
Great video! Bravely Default (and its OST) has a special place in my heart. I never thought about the empowerment theme, but the emotional association with the characters and their themes really hit me when I first fought the last battle years ago.
Bravely Default probably has one of the most incredible sountracks i've ever heard. It's one of a very few soundtracks that actually bring a tear to my eyes whenever I listen to it.
Whoa. I've never played Bravely Default. I know of its lineage, but had never played it or listened to the soundtrack. This is WAY better than I expected! And, of course, great video, as always.
+Jay Dietrich If you're into Final Fantasy games, it's really worth playing. It's like a modern old-school FF game. It has so many things that help overcome some of the 21st century JRPG problems.
That's what I've heard. I jumped off the Nintendo Handheld bandwagon with the DS though. I was hoping one of the features of the switch was going to (somehow) be 3DS backwards compatibility. Now that I know it's not, I'm planning to pick up a 2DS. This will definitely be on my list of games to get!
its one of my favorite final fantasys. it has sooo many quality of life options. like turning off battles reducing them, increasing them going in fast forward so on and so on
'favorite track is Ringabel' Obviously, you are a person of refined taste and judgement. Also, I don't know if your were doing it on purpose, but my heart was in my throat watching your boss fight. I was so scared you were gonna get a TKO
Great video! I missed Revo so much during Second. I hope that if Revo comes back for Third, Nintendo will allow him to be apart of a Bravely panel (Nintendo of America has a Bravely Second panel video on their TH-cam channel) I think it would mean a lot to his fans if he came to a panel. You used footage from the concert!!!!! I love that concert! Bravely Default's concert was the very first game concert I ever saw... I have a lot of good memories with Default mostly because of Revo. If only Nintendo could have a concert at e3 to promote Third and live stream it on their channel for those who couldn't be there in person. That won't happen though.... Revo for Bravely Third! I sometimes wonder if Revo is aware of how much fans missed him in Second.
I wish so much they could have got Revo to just do Yew and Magnolia's theme at least for Second and then reused "You Are My Hope" and "Baby Bird". I want Revo back for Third as well.
I've still gotta get around to playing Bravely default but I literally had chills when the final boss music wove in the character themes. How do you keep getting me with these damn videos! I still hum the Bastion music everyday!
Editing on this series is fantastic, really loving these. If you've not already tried it i would say definitely check out Nier Automata. The game is somewhat mixed for me but the OST is one of the best for me, period. Anyways, great work!
+matt sweatgast thanks Matt! I haven't played Nier Automata yet, but want to. All my time at the moment is being sucked into making these! Think I will make time for it though, I've heard it's a great soundtrack and I wanna experience it in-game.
Ever since I played this game I've used the bravely default soundtrack to get me home on a long drive. I'll always go through the whole soundtrack at least once on the trip, and then I'll time the last 30 minute run home and put on Evil Fight, into Evil Flight, and then repeating The Snake that Devours the Horizon as long as it takes. Such an energy boost, I absolutely adore this game. Bring On Bravely Default 2!!!
6:33 when this part came while playing the game. I was so close to the end and only Edea was alive. And this smile forms as I plan my moves. Then I waited until the part with the character themes was over and absolutely murdered the boss.
Haven't played the game yet and only heard a tiny portion of the soundtrack, but I still started smiling like a madman during the parts of the character's themes.
One thing you didn't mention that I love is that the world map has a day/night cycle. The time this cycle takes is synched to the length of the map theme _Horizon of Light and Shadow._ One day cycle takes up half of the song, and then since it's night-time, the second half of the song switches to minor key.
Amazing video. Absolutely cannot wait to hear what Revo is gonna pull off in Bravely Default 2. A big reason I never played bravely second and octopath was because revo wasnt involved in the music
Never played Bravely Default, but i still threw my fist in excitement and I kid you not... shed a tear over the characters mean theme in the final boss. If only life had soundtracks that played whenever i feel defated
Oh my god. I never noticed any of this ! (Well, of course I did for the character themes when using special moves, but even though I have some pride in my same-theme detection abilities I never heard the main theme playing in the boss or field musics...Let alone character themes being played as part of the boss music !) Anyways, this is amazing, makes me give another bunch of props to all the people behind the game ! It take talent, hard work and dedication to create such a game and I could never thank them enough.
I've watched this video like six times now, always coming back to it because it perfectly encapsulates my love for this game and its music. So well done, hope you're doing well man!
Nothing makes me happier than when this absolute masterpiece of a game actually gets the recognition it deserves. I honestly don't think a single aspect of the game falls flat and the music doesn't just bring it above the surface, it makes it truly soar like nothing else. Few games I remember with such fondness.
I'm glad you covered the final boss music for this game. Extremely underrated moment. Your videos are very well-produced, and I'm excited to see more of them in the future!
Your videos are great! Very well put together. I'd love to see you tackle the Persona franchise in terms of soundtrack(P3, P4, P5) because they're always really interesting in the context of the game. If you haven't heard them, just look up the vocal tracks of any persona game(my favourite being Rivers in the desert/Last surprise from P5). Just the way each game melds the soundtrack into the general tone of each scene is fantastic. Hope to see more of your content in the future! Keep up the good work!
+David Shtern I've not played a Persona game, but really want to. It would be a big project to make a video about it, but it's definitely one I want to do!
Oh man it's big. I'm with Oly, It goes a step further than P3/4 by enthusing the style of the game so closely with the soundtrack. You can listen to the OST on it's own and see exactly the kind of style the game is going for. The game is accessible to new-comers, And I'm sure you'll have lots of fun both playing it, and making videos about it! Best of luck!
If you like Bravely Default's music, you should look up Linked Horizon, especially Sound Horizon. Both are his band, but Sound Horizon is especially unique because each album is a story.
God I literally got shivers when you transitioned into the character theme medley because it's just SO good, and you're right that the final boss theme is all the more impactful for using that along with the game's main theme, making the ending just Incredibly satisfying and emotionally loaded
Revo is a god among men. My second favorite videogame music composer after nobuo uematsu, my favorite japanese musician, and my second favorite overall musician just after dave grohl. What an absolute legend.
another thing to point out about the final boss theme with the characters' fanfare section is how they each lead each other on. WhatI mean by this is the previous instrument stay for a measure longer while the next one plays, acting as a role of encouragement for the next character and instrument. This, to me, really ties in with the battle and team altogether as it symbolizes the everyone give each other the boost they need as team to take down the boss- they handle it separately, but at the end, join together to deal the final blow and reign victorious! This is so something that I will forever appreciate and enjoy from the Revo, and I'm really glad watched this video of yours! ❤
Bravely default's OST is one of my favorites in recent memory. It also blew my mind that I didn't catch the main theme's little motif cropping up until it was pointed out, given you hear it so often! Gosh dang, I got emotional hearing the final battle music again! Great work!
These videos get me so giddy and excited. I love how these soundtracks are put together and getting a full understanding of what the artists are trying to convey. I wish I had someone to share it with though..no one I know is into music in this way..
Hey! This was uploaded on my birthday! :) Excellent video. I knew from the moment I heard the menu theme I was going to adore this game. It's so cool to hear how much others love and appreciate the soundtrack as much as I did (and do!)
Please keep making these videos! I get incredibly pumped up finding connections and interpretations listening to video game music but haven't really found anyone that appreciates it as much (and why I'm currently a music major). Your videos help fuel imagination and add more importance to the musical pieces as they deserve.
Fantastic video! Very well said. This game quite possibly has my favorite soundtrack of all time, and the more I listen to it the stronger that feeling becomes. Revo did an AMAZING job here. The amount of detail and thought that went into this OST, with all the references tying things together and the main characters having theme instruments, is just insane - it's basically perfect. It's a shame he didn't work on the sequel...
No matter how many times I hear the final boss theme it still makes me tear up with the breakdown into the themes and it's just simply the most wonderful thing I have ever heard.
The Bravely Default music has Revo’s paws all over it. If people like it, I really suggest listen his other main projects Sound Horizon and Linked Horizon. He also also has live versions that are sung with great singers (that’s how I got to hear Bravely Default’s soundtrack for the first time)
I just want to say thank you for so eloquently explaining the way that I felt when I played this game for the first time. I couldn't put it to words why I liked Serpent Eating the Horizon so much beyond, "The music tells a story", and you did it very well.
The final boss and the way the music just explodes back into the character themes and the main theme was honestly one of the greatest moments in my life. Masterful.
I'd never noticed that the main theme was in _His name is_ ! Always sounded like its own, to me. I definitely felt the empowerment by the final boss theme, and this explains why it felt so good! Thank you for that.
I actually got it and its not that hard. I used the spiritmaster broken combo (stillness + AGI manipulation) because I didnt find any other option to win :/
Hey have you considered doing a video on the Music in Kingdom Hearts? The orchestral pieces are some of the best I've seen in videogames, and they really know how to set a mood within their games using the music.
I just discovered your channel (first though your BotW video which is so accurate and I'm shocked even needed to be said). The first one I clicked on after that is this, which I'm so glad to see, on one of my favorite games with a plain amazing soundtrack.
I absolutely love how you explain the game OST's ability to invigorate the player, far better than I ever could! Bravely Default has become my most favorite video game OST ever, and that use of character and main theme is just one reason.
I was referred to your channel by Dark Pixel. Have to say this is a great video and can't wait to see more. I do know this isn't your latest but it is the one that popped out to me because I am currently playing Bravely Default and I am floored by the sound track.
I finished Bravely default yesterday and it was a great experience. For 6 years the final boss theme was recommended to me and i didn't give a single time into temptation. It was all worth it.
Man, I love the music from this game. I'm sad I haven't been able to play it. Have you considered looking into the music from Lightning Returns? Particularly Almighty Bhunivelze? Man, that thing is a stockpile of leitmotifs and callbacks throughout the entire series. Saber's Edge, Heart of Chaos, The Ark, Fighting Fate... I'd definitely love to see an examination done on it. You've earned yourself a new subscriber, btw! I love watching people dissect game scores!
Is it safe to say that Bravely Default is the only game to ever use fucking Accordion in it's Final Boss Theme?
It’s been a few years but it’s still a yes!

+Chase McKenzie makes every walk feel like a journey!
i get literal chills when i listen to the soundtrack! bought this game on its release day and its definitely one of my favorites of the 3DS!
This will definitely be on my list of games to get!
make sure to get the second game once you beat default
its one of my favorite final fantasys. it has sooo many quality of life options. like turning off battles reducing them, increasing them going in fast forward so on and so on
Favorite JRPG since the day it came out. There's so many things I adore about this game and the OST is unparalleled in how perfect it is.
'favorite track is Ringabel'
Obviously, you are a person of refined taste and judgement.
Wish come true
@@ajtriforcegamerofhyrule8538 YAY!
I've still gotta get around to playing Bravely default but I literally had chills when the final boss music wove in the character themes. How do you keep getting me with these damn videos! I still hum the Bastion music everyday!
This videos design as far as direction was sublime. This is the type of editing and direction I strive for.
Well if that's the case than it's definitely time well spent. Good luck on Nier... hopefully you'll have a better time than i did lol.
Finally! I don't see enough talk about how brilliant Serpent Devouring the Horizon is
HOW I was just thinking all day about this video and it suddenly appears in my reccomendations.
I've loved the bravely soundtracks since the games came out, but having this analysis only makes me love it and gives me pride in the series.
Meh, second Is not bad as a game, even on ost level, there are a lot of good themes.
Revo is king. ´Nuff said.
Never played Bravely Default, but i still threw my fist in excitement and I kid you not... shed a tear over the characters mean theme in the final boss.
If only life had soundtracks that played whenever i feel defated
Oh my god. I never noticed any of this ! (Well, of course I did for the character themes when using special moves, but even though I have some pride in my same-theme detection abilities I never heard the main theme playing in the boss or field musics...Let alone character themes being played as part of the boss music !)
Anyways, this is amazing, makes me give another bunch of props to all the people behind the game ! It take talent, hard work and dedication to create such a game and I could never thank them enough.
Jeez man, the OST gives me chills. It's so damn good! Well put together video, too.
The most I've chained for special buffs was 8 special attacks, leading to a massive buff stack, and insane amounts of damage.
Few games I remember with such fondness.
the final boss theme in bravely default is easily one of my favorite songs in any game
I'm glad you covered the final boss music for this game. Extremely underrated moment. Your videos are very well-produced, and I'm excited to see more of them in the future!
+Mustard D Thank you! I feel like it's underrated because it's so hard to get to, haha.
Nicely done, that's a great explanation of why great boss battle music has such an impact.
That is such glorious hair!!
One of the best final boss themes too.
Keep up the good work!
you should absolutely do persona. their music is second to none.
+David Shtern I've not played a Persona game, but really want to. It would be a big project to make a video about it, but it's definitely one I want to do!
you should definitely go for persona 5 then, it has the best (and largest, i believe) soundtrack
+olyolers Yeah I think that will have to be my starting point, considering its the new one and it seems like a really accessible point.
Excellent video. There were still little details that I hadn't noticed such as the little nod to the victory fanfare!
Bravely default's OST is one of my favorites in recent memory. It also blew my mind that I didn't catch the main theme's little motif cropping up until it was pointed out, given you hear it so often! Gosh dang, I got emotional hearing the final battle music again! Great work!
Cried when I was at the last boss and those themes jumped in! Such a great moment
Man, the OST literally did a speedrun on getting me goosebumps.
These videos get me so giddy and excited. I love how these soundtracks are put together and getting a full understanding of what the artists are trying to convey.
I wish I had someone to share it with though..no one I know is into music in this way..
This is how every character-driven game should be scored. Change my mind.
God this is one of the all time great vg soundtracks. The way everything comes together in the final boss theme is perfection!
The way each character's theme instrument appears for a few seconds in the crescendo of the main theme is just... 👌
that medley of the character themes literally gives me chills
i LOVE it i'm so glad you gave the breakdown on this, a definite sub from me
Your use of the sheet music is so lovely, excellent videos and super delightful as a music buff.
No matter how many times I hear the final boss theme it still makes me tear up with the breakdown into the themes and it's just simply the most wonderful thing I have ever heard.
Great content and well-edited and researched. Keep it up! Hope your channel blows up soon.
+Indigo Gaming ahh I appreciate it! I hope so too! Hahaha.
The Bravely Default music has Revo’s paws all over it. If people like it, I really suggest listen his other main projects Sound Horizon and Linked Horizon. He also also has live versions that are sung with great singers (that’s how I got to hear Bravely Default’s soundtrack for the first time)
Revo done it again.
The absolute freakin' madman
This video gave me a rush accompanied with a wave of goosebumps, since you reminded me just how much I love this game!
Is not showtime until ringabell theme DROPS!!!
I cried while you were putting words to my feelings as I remembered every step of the journey. Not even ashamed of admitting it
I just want to say thank you for so eloquently explaining the way that I felt when I played this game for the first time. I couldn't put it to words why I liked Serpent Eating the Horizon so much beyond, "The music tells a story", and you did it very well.
This is easily one of my favorite games in recent years. Thanks for the great video on one of it's shining aspects
8:12 HUH? UNSCATHED IN OUROBORO'S FIGHT??
*HUUUUHH?*
The bravely default soundtrack was brilliant and a half. It still hits me in the feels after all the time that's passed
I keep coming to this video every time you upload a new one. It's so good!
I just discovered your channel (first though your BotW video which is so accurate and I'm shocked even needed to be said). The first one I clicked on after that is this, which I'm so glad to see, on one of my favorite games with a plain amazing soundtrack.
This is my favorite video and I keep coming once in a while. You should make more music comparisons like in this one
I absolutely love how you explain the game OST's ability to invigorate the player, far better than I ever could! Bravely Default has become my most favorite video game OST ever, and that use of character and main theme is just one reason.
+StrawberryEggs thank you for your kind words. :)
This is amazing editing and you showcased how truly awesome this ost is! Keep it up the great videos!
I was referred to your channel by Dark Pixel. Have to say this is a great video and can't wait to see more. I do know this isn't your latest but it is the one that popped out to me because I am currently playing Bravely Default and I am floored by the sound track.
+Bryce 'Killor318' Parker I really enjoyed the conversation we had on the Dark Pixel Podcast, can't wait for you to hear it!
Wow! Thanks for taking the time to make this video! This just inspired me so much!
Awesome video! Great job explaining just how hype that last theme is. Looking forward to your next one!
+Michelle Malaski thank you!
Thank you showing love to my favorite game soundtrack of all time.
I finished Bravely default yesterday and it was a great experience. For 6 years the final boss theme was recommended to me and i didn't give a single time into temptation. It was all worth it.
Great job Matt! You made an in-joke of my name in the Spawn Point team and now you're making these great videos. Looking forward to your next one! :)
Thank you Sanita! Really means a lot. I'm surprised you realised that was me!
35°C and im trembling, just this game and his music
Carlos Prieto brah same
Man, I love the music from this game.
Nice timing of the Mario jump noise with Ringabel's jump at 4:55, lol
This video has singlehandedly reinvigorated my love for Bravely Default. It's time to start over and actually finish the game this time.
this straight up brought a tear to my eye. Thank you very much.
I've never even played this and that final medley gave me major chills. I love this sort of thing!
You should give it a go, it's the best game you've never played!
