Very well said about the process of learning to fly. I had those same feelings and at one point, almost quit. Thankfully my flight instructor gave me the space then encouragement to continue. It is very sad that more positive videos don't rise to the top over the disaster/crash views. It is human nature to be drawn to those things. To date one of my most popular videos is on the stall recovery I made, ironically on my first long solo cross country. The upside to that near miss was all the comments thanking me for putting that out so others could learn from it. So good on you Kim, you will have a long and wonderful flight career.
Kim - your confidence is so impressive. I remember a couple years ago, you struggling to make calls in the Baron on the radio. Now you sound like a PIC and taking command of the aircraft. For what it's worth, I'm so proud of you! RE: your traffic debrief, I agree with you - it's situational. To me it depends on how close the traffic is according to the ATC or ADS reporting. If it's in close proximity, you aviate if you have the room - clear yourself of immediate conflict, then get a sighting. Always err on the side of safety - that's way easier to explain and justify than taking risks!
totally get that "cotton mouth" feeling. I got it in training and in the hours after it- my subconscious brain was obviously feeling threatened, even though I wasn't feeling anxiety or surprise.

Kim, your vulnerability in publicly sharing your challenges has been instrumental to helping me reach the successes in my own aviation journey. So many people don’t reveal the mental challenges that are real for many. The feelings, doubt and anxiety that I’ve experienced many times since wanting to be a pilot in my 20s have delayed me getting into GA aviation, but now at 38, finally the last 6 months I’ve been able to clock up 50 hours, push through the fears and are now genuinely excited to go flying twice a week.

This. This is exactly why we did what we did. It’s not about “fame” or another video to put out, it’s about showing the rawness of how training can truly make people feel, even though society has tried to act like it’s all unicorns and rainbows.

Kim Great job, I have done both, but I am a sailor for 55+ years, very similar in theory with the exception of one being vertical and one horizontal. Your planning, your thinking, your actions and your execution of all things are spot on. You should be extremely proud of yourself and your community. You are 100% correct that people need to stop living on sound bits. It is not real. Many, many groups, clubs, NGO's and others are still working hard to make this world a better place and support the ones that want to make it happen. It is NOT about one F up, in the news and dwelling on it, it is about learning about that issue and continuing on. (news clip, FAA report month later, much different). Understanding that; Yes so much love and support does happen in the world, and yes the negative is front page way to often.
Point is: real support is happening everyday, not BS.
I can't wait to see you back in the Baron LOL. Thanks for letting us into your life, many support you and learn form you! Always keep moving forward.

Well Done and I love how you are promoting general aviation. Solo cross country was, for me, the moment I truly felt being a pilot in command and watching your trip...man the memories. That I could fly again...I miss being up there.
Great job Kim. In the 70’s, I had 4 hours in a 150. The only thing I remember is “keep your hand on the throttle, save the hand on your knee for your girlfriend “.
Brings back memories of my cross country in 1968, flying a Cessna 150 from Liverpool in the UK. No GPS or autopilot in those days. Loved watching your ups and downs through your training. You're nearly there. Next is your instrument, then twin ratings. I know you can do it. You'll be flying jets before long. ❤

Good Question on traffic spotting. It is situational. Most of the time, I would leave the autopilot on, so I can concentrate on scanning for traffic. One exception is entering the traffic pattern. I want to be hand flying. Great to see your progress.

I agree that it is situational. If the other traffic is at the same altitude I’m very vigilant but leave the autopilot on as it is easy to over power it if I need to take quick evasive action, as it is one less thing to deal with when the autopilot is maintaining my course and altitude. It is easy to creep up or down, left or right, searching for traffic.

Right on about the aviation community. I have been SO fortunate to meet great people in this space. I have had the pleasure of working with several absolutely awesome instructors at my home field and other vacation fields for checkouts. As to dry mouth, well I get the jitters a little before every solo trip. Still a low time PPL working on IR. Say "Hi" to Baron Pilot for me.

I maintain autopilot because it's going to keep me straight and level. I have a habit of making small inputs while I am eyes out turning slightly etc. If I need to make a big correction the AP will click off

I hear you about focusing on the negatives. It’s human nature that negative news gets our attention. That won’t change, but those with a serious interest in aviation will place those negative reports in context with the big picture.
Fwiw I’ve found your PIC series fascinating. You seem to be progressing very well. My interest in flying came a bit too late in life to make it a reasonable goal, however I can still learn from watching you and others like you enjoying the experience.

Another great video. Thank you so much for sharing your journey - mine was 23 years ago, but many of the things you're saying transport me back to my own training. Since then I've gained an Instructor's licence to pass the joy onto the next generation. You're doing great, and seeing a wonderful example for others to follow.
Well done Kim. You're lucky to have autopilot on a longer flight. I didn't have it back in the 80's and 3 hours flying manually was knackering, but exhilarating. Looking forward to the pie tasting and results.

But hearing about your ups and downs has really given me a boost, knowing I'm not the only one feeling this way. It was nice landing! I have wanted to see the pie. I fly and have it by myself sometime.
That was a real good flight, stayed ahead of the airplane all of the time, nice control and on it coms, the landings were fab too, especially with the wind being off 40 degrees and blustering 14 knots, not usually easy to master but you had a greaser on the second one!.

Great job Kim! For the autopilot question, it depends on your planes capabilities and how stable the traffic has been. The plane I fly, when I give it a higher altitude, pitches and climbs quickly by using indicated airspeed climb versus foot-per-minute. Keep in mind, that may also obscure my view which is bad. A normal 500 FPM climb may not be enough oomph in a short time to warrant the change. If the traffic has been stable, sometimes it is best to leave everything alone, or climb on IAS (no stall) autopilot and focus on watching for traffic. If the traffic has been unstable or inconsistent, disconnect, do a notable course and/or speed change to generate a good bit of distance preferably behind the target, then once clear you can realign to destination/altitude and resume normal flying.
This plane’s AP only has ALT, VS and APR vertical modes, no IAS (or VNAV).
Personally, I’m not changing altitudes unless the target is maneuvering, which is rare at cruise altitudes. I’d rather turn behind them and stay level. But either way, I’m staying on AP so I can keep my eyes outside.
I honestly didn't realize you were not in Florida. Looks like you were near my old home of Indiana. I finished my private certificate at Bloomington, IN airport and my long country was a 3 leg affair going to Illinois, then Evansville, IN and I forget where else before back to B-town. It was in February, CAVU and cold! The heat in the old 152 was marginal and I froze my butt off. It was a great feeling of independence and amazing I could go places in a few hours what would take me all day in a car.
