This is brilliant, Olga. I love this whole series of crochet concepts you are doing but I especially love this one because it has taken me years of "hit and miss" to learn this about colour-changing yarn - how to use it and where it works or doesn't work. I haven't found anyone else on YT talking about this aspect of crochet. Thank you!

Thank you Olga. I definitely share the same sentiments as your other fans below. I have struggled for years trying to understand how to use variegated yarns. I envy those who can just pick up a cake and whip something out and it was the right stitch combo. We all look forward to future lessons in the use of these techniques. 💖

Very helpful explanation of using variegated yarns, Olga. It's very disappointing to find a beautiful variegated yarn and end up with a project you're not satisfied with as a result of not choosing a suitable pattern. :)

Good video.. I like using variegated yarn but have a dilemma finding the right project for it. You gave very good insight. I'm making a ripple afghan with combination varigated and solid color yarn.

Agree with you. I found these different intricate stitch patterns are better with solids. Can see the definition much better. Have had to really color control on the multiple color yarns. Thank you for the informative information 👍🏼

THANK YOU SOOO MUCH!!! I had so much trouble finding this answer, because I wasn't phrasing my question correctly. I'm so appreciative of your explanations of the differences of stitch choices depending on the frequency of which the color changes occur. That's a detail I hadn't considered much. You saved me from a huge catastrophe! I am forever grateful - sincerely, I am! I never leave myself adequate time for ANY project😖, so I certainly don't have time to mess up! 🤪

Hi Christine. I feel the same way. If you haven’t done so, watch her big crochet commission videos posted a year ago. Every scarf she made was with some type of variegated yarn and she nailed it with each one. I especially love the third video where she started the scarf only to see that the effect was not good. She added one more row segment and voila! I am always amazed when I rewatch those videos.

All four of these yarns work well with Tunisian mosaic for either the pattern background, or the pattern itself, bcause the color changes are quick enough. They would also work well with mosaic overlay crochet. Multi color yarns like Red Heart Favorite stripes have long runs of color and don't look nearly as nice.

The Tangier yarn would be gorgeous in a kimono of triple crochet stitches. Not a fancy pattern, but big. I can’t respond to the texture as I’ve never felt it.

Dear Olga i love your Videos very much and have croched many Projekts from you thank you for All. I have a question: Do you make a stitch test before you Start a New Projekt? Do you think it is Important? Sorry for my writing, iam from germany, its little bit diffucult for me🤗many greats 🙋‍♀️🧶

    • @OlgaPoltava
      @OlgaPoltava  ปีที่แล้ว +1

Hi Gudrun, thank you so much! To answer your question, most of the time I don't. I only make a sample/swatch before starting a new project if it's going to be a piece of fitted clothes. For projects such as scarves, shawls, blankets, etc I don't make samples. But I do make samples when I'm trying to come up with a new stitch.

@@OlgaPoltava Well what I know on the subject is if you're using about it J or a K (most of the time), and you can get 2 double crochet out of it before it before it changes color again until you get to a long stretch of white or blue or some wonderful color , you can end up having a wonderful Argyle type plaid.
A lot of working it out is trial-and-error and probably a lot of frogging. Usually I'm happy enough knowing that 1 or 2 stitches of colors that you get betwixt the white or otherwise main color that has larger stretches of it, you're gonna end up with a wonderful Argyle type plaid.
Sometimes Emmy says size stitch it's gonna have to go in the place depending on how much of that color or how much of a stretch of that color you have. By that I mean you may have a slip stitch and a single stitch together in the same hole you may have a double crochet and a single crochet in one hole before it changes color because that is just an oddity of that particular skein of yarn - maybe the Dyer had an off day. If you're obsessed with all of your stitches being the same and you don't like randomness because that's chaos if you'd just have to cut and retire it or do a Russian join or some such then feel free but controlling the color is what gets you the plaid pattern if you're fortunate enough to figure out which skein of yarn to use.
Who knows some yarn maker may have that information for you they may plan for it and die it that way I don't know there may be a website or some TH-cam channel that has that information I'm gonna start looking it up cause I wanna try it.
I sort of tried it with a black coffee color and a coffee with too much cream in it color and a color that had both of those colors in it plus an aqua turquoise type color that was pretty vivid and I think it also had white. Well I did great expanses of the deep Cocoa brown-black coffee color I did a row of the cafe LA 10 tan coffee with too much Creamer in it color and then the turquoise plus color in Swain and then repeated the color before that and then repeated great expanses of the dark Brown color.
I had just meant to blend some colors and throw in an odd ball that kind of matched pretty good with it but then I noticed that that multicolored wood was looking like it was undulating as though I had woven some intricate pattern in between those 2 rows of the mocha latte tan color.
Well the colors weren't meeting quite right so I pulled it out and started using more tension less tension in various places until it met it perfectly so that it would look even better and people remarked and wondered if it was some sort of a Native American indian pattern that they didn't know about yet and I'm like, "no it's just sandwiched".
The best, I recall the red heart super saver yarn that I used was called
      1. Coffee (or Cocoa)
      2. The tan color was cafe latte or mocha latte.. Or just "latte".
      3. I think the 4 color variated yarn was called turquoise sky, however I don't know why something called such would have black coffee brown, and tan and white colors in it - well, I kinda see why it has the white cause... ya know, sky has clouds, and the light turquoise/aqua/sky blue but... It didn't make sense to me.

I’ve never found any use for variegated yarn. Not one that works or doesn’t look a mess. It looks sloppy and messy even in plain knit top there’s just no excuse for this mess. I’ve even tried making a plain scarf with that red heart yarn you recommend for lace scarf. Nope. Hot freaking mess of color. It’s just yuck b

I got lucky. The first time I used variegated yarn was on an entrelac (Tunisian) pattern and it is beautiful. I alternated solid and variegated. I bought a bunch of variegated after that and have hated everything else I tried lol I realized it was the patterns not the yarn. I think a couple of the Tunisian stitches would work well with it.
