Love it! TSA kicked me out of the airport when I tried to take my Chelegance MC-750 (ground spike) through the airport. So when I got to Hamvention I found the wolf river coil guys and grabbed their “SOTA” setup and a few of their longer whips. 73 de KI7QCF
That's hilarious!! the WRC is quickly becoming one of my favorite antennas...so fast to set up and great performer! For travel, I have a full kit that fits in my carryon bag that includes a collapsible fiberglass fishing rod, K6ARK EFHW and QCX Mini, and it travels VERY well. You can see it in action here th-cam.com/video/hmMV7DdZBss/w-d-xo.html. I'll probably replace it with the QMX and multi-band EFHW soon!
Could you write more about that metal plate under the key? With those tiny keys, there is always some issue because they are light, but not always something to grip on.
It's a jeweler's bench block. Amazon has tons of them, like this one www.amazon.com/OWDEN-Professional-Block%EF%BC%88No-Stamping-Diameter/dp/B07WNR8Y2L It's just a steel plate with a silicone sleeve on the bottom, so anything magnetic will stick to it. I just 3d printed a base for my key that holds some magnets and it works pretty well. It does slip around a small amount if you are a heavy keyer like I am. I have to try and make sure I key with a lighter touch to keep it from sliding. That being said, this one weighs around 1.5 pounds but there are other ones that weigh around 3 pounds which might be better if you are heavy handed when keying. Hope this helps!
Great video Jason. I'm new to the CW world and really enjoyed and learned a lot from the video. What kind of speaker are you using? Would love to get one for my 891. 73, Jim
Jim, thanks for the kind words! When I first started in CW, and Ham radio for that matter, the likes of KB9VBR, K4SWL and NJ7V really helped me have the confidence to get on the air. I started this channel to hopefully help others in the same way. I'm glad that you found it helpful!! The speaker is from WalMart, it's this one: www.walmart.com/ip/onn-Small-Rugged-Speaker-with-Bluetooth-Wireless-Technology-Blue/883044562?athbdg=L1100. Another great but slightly more expensive option is the Anker Soundcore Mini. 73 de KO4TFE dit dit
Looks like a nice setup. I like vertical setups because they seem faster to me than a wire antenna if there are no issues . “That new antenna smell. “ reminded me of I love the smell of napalm in the morning from Apocalypse Now.
Funny your video showed up in my feed. I was trying to get you from US-8638! I was mainly active on SSB but made a contact with CW on 20m….. I was shaking nervous as it was my first CW contact….. then the ticks got me!!! Indian Creek is full of them! Hope to work you this summer ❤😊
Congrats on your first CW contact!! We're pretty close, so I'll be sure to work to lower bands some this summer so we have a better chance. Stay safe out there! 72! KO4TFE
@@KYFriedHam so good to me! I am working on learning the NVIS antenna deal…. Sounds spooky cool to me and hope I can make it work for me. I really have to find a park that is not so infested with ticks…. The DEET has failed me! It was strange that no birds were around that park either….. thanks for the reply!!! I will hunt you down in a non-stalker kinda way lol 😝
DEET isn't very effective for ticks as it needs to stay wet to repel them. Another more effective option is to apply permethrin to your clothes. It will kill the ticks if they get on you and it lasts through several washes. I found a company that I've been wanting to try that has a process that is supposed to last through 70 washes. They sell pre-treated clothes or you can send in your own for them to treat. *This comment is not intended as legal or medical advice as I'm just a redneck from Kentucky. @@KYFriedHam oh!!! This is good info!!! Thanks for spillin that kinda tea my way! I thought DEET did it all…. I was wrong lol 😝 I’m gonna look into the permethrin for sure
36:42 I was listening to your video in the background and thought "that's a weird sounding pileup." I don't get many takers on anything lower freq than 20 meters out here. Did your key scooting around on the jewelers block annoy you at all? I can't stand when my key scoots around.
That's a shame. The lower bands are pretty reliable around here if propagation isn't good. Yeah, it's a bit annoying, but I try not to be too heavy handed when using this setup. I need to rough up the base with some sandpaper, that helps reduce the slippage.

Yeah, it's a super fast setup and fast to change bands too. The way the bands have been lately, it feels like Apocalypse Now!!
