EVENING QRP POTA | TR-35 #cw #parksontheair #hamradio
After having a stressful couple of weeks dealing with everything from no AC at home to issues with the HVAC contractor, I needed to get out to the park. I had to run some errands, so I decided to grab my kit in case I had time to activate. It was getting later in the evening, but I decided to stop off at the park anyway. I ended up staying there until way after sunset! Finally my hunger got the best of me and I had to pack it up to go home and eat some tasty Manwich.
It took quite a while to get the activation completed due to the UTC switchover, I ended up with 28 contacts in the log (across both UTC days) on multiple bands. Man I love this little TR-35!
I hope you enjoy coming along with me for this activation.

QMX LIVES TO POTA ON! #cw #hamradio #parksontheair

If you saw my last video, you'll know that my QMX died during a Parks on the Air activation at US-1940, Caesar Creek State Park. Or so I thought. Once I arrived home, I plugged in the QMX to a power meter and lo and behold 3.6 Watts!! This is what I typically get with this radio. So I figured my antenna must have been damaged when it fell. I set it up and ran a full sweep and everything looked ...

      Yeah, I was blown away, BC on 2.5 watts! I'm a huge fan of the Long Island CW Club. There you can get real world practice with other people of your skill level. And the classes and comradery are a blast! But they have a saying "Get on the air to get good, don't get good to get on the air" and I believe that whole heartedly. Being on the air is the single best way to improve. Listening to perfectly generated computer code isn't realistic as everyone has a unique fist. It really helps to listen to all the different styles and key types in real world scenarios because you have to be uncomfortable to improve!

    Yes, the QMX does not like more than 12V. It also does not like USB-C PD. Instead, I use a LiFePo4 battery and a low-drop step-down converter (Pololu item #: 4874) adjusted to 11.5V, which gives me 4 to 5 watts (depends on the chosen band). Pololu products are quite expensive (compared to Chinese stuff on Ebay or Amazon), but for your money you get top quality from USA.

    • @KYFriedHam
      @KYFriedHam 8 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I'm familiar with Pololu, the do make great stuff. I usually use my Talentcell 3Ah LiPo battery which outputs just below 12V when fully charged and it works great but this was an exception as I was out of town and unprepared...I knew I was probably playing with fire, but I knew I had a stock of BS170's at home!

  • @bryan94591
    @bryan94591 10 วันที่ผ่านมา

    Ah rats. That LiFePo might have been putting out more than 12V if fully charged. If the SWR jumped up when the antenna fell, you may have had a voltage spike at the final transistors and burned on or more of them out. I did that to mine. I got 10 on Amazon for a few dollars and did the replacement in an hour or so, and the rig is back running. Wish this rig were a bit more robust.

    • @KYFriedHam
      @KYFriedHam 10 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Yeah, that's what I suspected. I usually use a 12V Talentcell, but I couldn't find the charger. The LiFePO4 was not fully charged and was running around 13V so I knew I was pushing it. I guess that's what happens when you play with fire. I have 100 of the output FETs from a QCX Mini failure a while back. You're right, it isn't very robust, but at least it's cheap and easy to fix.

      @@Andrew-dg7qm The 891 is a great receiver with great filtering and noise reduction, and 100W. Some CW decoders are better than others. @@KYFriedHam I only have the ultra portable paddle from AME, it’s Okay, but I have to use a 3d printed shroud to cover the screws until I can find the right sized set screws. He doesn’t use metric on his keys, and all I have is metric screws.

    I’m learning CW and that was the first POTA that I picked up code from while driving. Im guessing BK is a thing, and wow. That 5.

    • @KYFriedHam
      @KYFriedHam หลายเดือนก่อน

      I'm glad you were able to copy me! Yes BK is a quick way of saying "over" or "back to you". The normal exchange would end with something like <their call> DE <your call> K to hand the conversation back to them. But since POTA is such a quick exchange people end their "sentence" with BK. Then it's customary for the other station to begin with BK, for "back to me" instead of the long form again. You will hear it in other contexts as well and it's appropriate to use in any QSO, but many ragchews, SKCC QSOs and the like, people are a bit more formal and use the full hand off.

    1:21:00 … I KNOW FOR SURE I have heard Lieutenant Uhura make this EXACT sound on the Star Ship Enterprise communications system, circa 1967-1969 (Star Trek Original Series)! 😉😉😉 … And the CW that immediately follows; now that’s more my speed for copying… Well, IF it had longer Farnsworth spacing … LOL! 😂😂😂 … And what is the metal clanking sound every couple of minutes? YES, I am actually watching the ENTIRE 2 hrs to see if I can copy anything. Mostly WAY too fast for me, and I now know for sure that even though I know all my letters, numbers, punctuation, and even a few abbreviations, I’m still NOWHERE NEAR ready to get on the air. The one thing I’ve gotten really good at through this though, is tapping out YOUR exact CQ call, right in time with you: CQ CQ POTA de KO4TFE K … I’ve got that DOWN now! LOL! 😂😂😂

      LOl, that's awesome! I love the OG Star Trek...really all of them up to TNG The metal clanking sound is me taking a drink of water from my metal water bottle. Thanks for watching the whole thing, that's dedication! haha, I do the same thing with the CW TH-camr's that I watch. I think I can send some of their CQ's better than mine!!

    Beginner CW question (not good enough to get on the air yet, and I’m super slow still): I thought it was good operating procedure to slow down to match the speed of the contact. Am I wrong about that? So when those contacts came through that were so much slower, it wouldn’t have been more polite to match their speed? Thanks in advance for the info…

    • @KYFriedHam
      @KYFriedHam หลายเดือนก่อน

      First of all, I'd say if you know all your characters, get on the air! The best way to improve is to be on the air and groups like the SKCC have ops who focus on working people down to 5 WPM. Second, yes it is ideal to match the calling stations speed which I always try to do. However on some radios it isn't fast or easy to change the keyer speed, so you can just add more spacing between characters. If I didn't do that it's likely because I'm a relatively new CW op myself and it takes all my brain power to make a contact lol. Also if you don't understand what was sent and the operator doesn't slow down, you can always send QRS which means send slower. Hope to catch you on the air someday soon!
