    Without sync it would drift, and phase would almost never be correct. Easy test: slow the blades slightly. You can add something to the tips. Even if freq is correct, it still needs a phase reference. Accelerometer near the pivot might work to detect gravity. Another easy test: whilst on, rotate the base. If the reference is gravity the image should remain upright. If referenced to the base, the image will follow the orientation of the base. 😁

      Is the blade visible or was this a result of the cameras refresh rate?

  • @H3wastooshort
    @H3wastooshort 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Couldnt it be using the offset IR led in the base to always know where the rotor is and how fast it is spinning? Just measure how long the gap between pulses takes, then measure how many % of that time elapsed since the last pulse. There would have to be insane precision otherwise because even the tiniest mismatch would result in a slowly turning image

    • @atomic14
      @atomic14  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It just be doing something like that. Maybe just restarting the image every time and slowly adjusting the timings to match.

    I wonder why they don't use APA102 leds and dispense with the driver ic's. Perhaps it's cheaper this way.

    • @atomic14
      @atomic14  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I must admit, initially, I thought the same, but I think it's down to the refresh rate. I don't think with addressable LEDs you'd be able to clock out the pixels quickly enough and have the LEDs latch the results fast enough to get a high enough resolution. Might be fine for a small display - maybe the one I have would work, but think for larger displays it might not.

      I would assume that that LED is just on (or on with a particular frequency) and every time the top goes around, it's syncronized by the receiver of that LED from the bottom. That's way too good sync to be open loop

    Wow quite an expensive way of removing finger tips, I could recommend a pair of garden shears as a cheaper alternative :-) . At least it can give a bit more colour to the spurt of blood as it leaves the fingers via the fan, i might also add an improvement at the point where the shite hits the fan could be had.

  • @piconano

    They must have some way to calibrate the resonant frequency after assembly in software. They set it and forget it.
    What happens -if- when one of the blades breaks and takes off? I think one will need more than safety glasses.
    More like bomb disposal suit!
    A cool video and idea nevertheless.
