Can't wait to see the inside of an intact example, the ones I've been around were used as farm machinery postwar or are awaiting restoration so a lot of the interior fixtures were stripped out.

It is too bad that in WoT the Matilda to often is fighting way outside of its historical context. But on the once in a blue moon it does fight within it it is real fun.
All the tanks fight outside their historical context. It's an arcade game.
There must be a Chieftain's Hatch for every vehicle that is:
1. in the game, and
2. physically exists in some form.
You need to jump into the old, rested M6 that still exists!
Personally, i'd love if he took a look at the amx 50B in Saumur. A french tank would be cool, especially considering its an auto-loader that actually was gonna be France's heavy tank before NATO basically standardised weaponry for many nations.

Years ago, I used to play a tabletop war game centered around tanks. I usually took the British side in African campaigns. I used to kick ass with that massive cast iron turret and hull. The survivability due to small size and strong armor more than made up for its lack of speed. Loved that beast!

A full-view shot actually showing what the tank looks like would be helpful. All you show are close views of various parts. Of course, that is what most of us come for, but at least a quick overall shot to start out would be nice, maybe one from each quarter as you start to discuss it.

Hey, thanks for opening the maintenance-hatches on the running gear. That's indeed something you rarely, if ever, see (o.-)b
The slider-system always stroke me as odd. Sure, it's cheaper to build, but maintenance does look increased, as it should wear down both the sliders and the tracks, metal rubbing on metal and all, as well as reducing the already low engine power even further.
You have to view it through the ideas and ideals of the time however. Back in WW2, tanks had, if they were lucky, a 200 km range, but most were in the 140 - 160 km range, such as the Matilda II. Also, the tracks themselves weren't expected to have a long service life either, a lot of tanks casted the link and the track shoe as one unit, because it was cheaper, faster, and used less material. Long term serviceability generally wasn't a large factor in WW2 tank design, tanks, even when the Matilda II was being built, were pretty much hoped to last 1 or 2 years, before being replaced entirely, by a new tank. Such was the attrition of combat, and the rapid evolution of technology.

Kind of curious if the armor encased running gear had any significant effect on the tanks reputation for being hard to kill. On most tanks the suspension and tracks are relatively weak, the tracks on the strongest tanks isn't any less vulnerable than that on weaker tanks, not significantly. And your King Tiger isn't in good shape with a track shot off and unable to move. So having your armor outside the tracks seems like it would materially effect your vulnerability. I can only assume that most people decided against it because it makes maintenance much harder and it does get fouled with mud and ice easily. It's also heavier, since you have to armor a larger package overall.

Not sure about World of tanks too grind heavy for me but in Men at War which has crazy realistic stats/ balistics. The Matilda 2 was a perfect infantry tank plus could "hold" larger tanks until infantry dealt with them. Kinda like the Churchill maybe couldnt knock out a heavy German tank but could hold them until some else could. Kv1's did the same thing heavy tank low velocity gun tanks could still be effective vs dedicated tank killers as long as they had support. Which I am sure the British used to full effect during the war naturally...

I heard Matilda II was slow and not very well armed BUT extremely tough (for her day) and that she could outlive a German Tank 20x over in therms of reliability
So, in the FV214, the camera man is drunk. IN this, he's unable to actually follow along when Chieftain points something out. Oy.

Didn't the Germans first learn about the Matilda II at the Battle of Arras?. Where Rommel used 88mm AA guns against the Matildas.
They did, but since everyone else is such an expert its probably best to let them dig the holes!
Mentions that you needed a 8.8 cm Flak 18/36/37/41 gun for penetrating the Matilda II. Could'nt the Tungsten/wolfram APCR rounds on the 5 cm Pak 38 and/or the 7.5 cm Pak 40 easily do the job (know that the 5cm/7,5cm was "rather" to late for some part of the Africa campaign, but still ?)
Matilda ll fought the Germans in The Battle of France before the North African campaign started. At the particular battle he is referring to in France, the German forces only had 37 mm AT guns and their tanks were mostly armed with small caliber repeating cannons. It wasn't until the Matilda's were about to overrun the German positions that they improvised and used the only other guns they had, which were the 88 mm Flack AA guns which proved to be effective.
The 7.5 cm gun on the Panther had, at least in 143/44 , the same penetration as the 8.8cm kwk L/56 that was used on the tiger. Since the Tiger was able to destroy Matilda II's, the "long" barreled 7.5 cm was also capable of destroying it.
Pretty sure Chieftain is referring to the time when this thing rolled onto the battlefield, not WW2 in general.

But there were no Panthers in Afrika or in the German invasion of France in 1940.
Germans didnt have 7,5cm PAKs in 1940-41 and hardly had any 5cm guns. A destroyed T-34 with by 5cm gun (PAK or KwK) was rare and T-34 had 45mm armor. The IIIrd Reich heavy tank project started because non of their tanks could damage Matilda.
Matilda II is the only British tank that was used thruout the whole war from 1939 to 1945 but in 1942 few that survived on the western front were used mostly by the sappers as a Mine flail (Matilda Scorpion). The tank was far more expensive to build than Valentine and production stopped in autumn 1941. Matildas served the Red Army, few as late as 1944. Pacific Theatre is where they served until the wars end (alongside M3 Grants).

What would Matilda have to do with a duck? The only Matildas I am familiar with are Matilda from the childrens book, and the would-be Queen who fought a civil war in England in the 1100s. I would assume the queen was the logical choice and the namesake for the other.
The story is that someone thought the Matilda I looked kind of like a duck and named it after Donald Duck's aunt, Matilda McDuck.
